Physical Properties Chemical Properties Physical Changes Chemical Changes
Physical Properties • Characteristics that can be observed
without changing the substance • You use your senses to measure or tell it • Examples:
• Color, size, shape, texture, odor, taste, weight, luster (shiny), melting pt., boiling pt., freezing pt., density, solubility
Chemical Properties • Characteristics that tell you how
something reacts • Examples:
• Flammability • Sensitivity to light • Ability to rust
Physical Change • A change in a substance’s size, shape, or
phase of matter • Nothing new is created * Can go back • Examples:
• Ice cream melting • Tearing paper • Water boiling into steam • Rain evaporating
Chemical Changes
• Occurs when one substance changes into a new substance * Can’t go back • Examples:
• Burning paper • Something decomposing/ rotting • Iron rusting
