The profession of Pharmacy is the most trusted one in many
countr ies l ike USA. The development of the Profession in India
dates back to 1930's when the pre- independent Govt of India
appointed a committee to look into the requirements in the
educat ional, manufactur ing and qual i ty control of drugs marketed
in our country. The lack of qual i f ied Pharmacists and Test ing
Laboratories were the reasons why quality drugs were not available
in India. With the framing of the PharmacyAct 1948 and The Drugs
and Cosmetics Act 1940 by Government, the situation started
improving, The f i rst Col lege of Pharmacy was formed in '1945
in the
Banaras Hindu Universi ty. Later reputed inst i tut ions l ike Bir la
Inst i tute of Technology started conduct ing B' Pharm course.
Today there are adequate number of Col leges conduct ing
Pharmacy Courses, regulated by the Al l India Counci l of Technical
Educat ion, Pharmacy Counci l of India and State Pharmacy
Counci ls. The coming up of several Pharmacy col leges in our
country i tsel f is a pointer to the opportunit ies that are await ing for
the successful students studying for the var ious courses in
Pharmacy.
Pharmacists are technologists in the manufacture, qual i ty control
of drugs and post graduate students and PhD holders f ind a
placement in reputed research laboratories' The content of
B,Pharm covers subjects of varied nature like Anatomy, Physiology
and Pharmaceut ical Engineering and even Hospital Management.
I t is worth mentioning that a Pharmacist is an expert on drugs,
whether i t i s manufac ture or ana lys is o r eva lua t ing the
prescr ipt ions.; i' l
