WelcomeAt Ormiston Maritime Academy, we are passionate about learning. Our highest priority is to provide an environment that excites, inspires, motivates and challenges students and prepares them for the world around them.

We want your child to be happy at the academy and to realize their full potential whatever their talents. We believe in ‘success through effort’. Respect, diligence, self-discipline, good manners and a concern for all within and beyond our community are the values that underpin our work. We have high aspirations and expectations of our staff and our students and are proud of our achievements.

Our state-of-the-art building offers unrivalled learning opportunities within North East Lincolnshire – enabling our young people and community to take advantage of our cutting edge technologies and facilities.

This prospectus aims to inform you about our curriculum, facilities, how we work and the philosophy of education; which is the foundation of all we do. Entrusting your child to the care of our academy is one of the most important decisions that you will ever make. I would therefore encourage you to come and see the academy at work and find out more about us.

Ofsted 2014 agreed that Ormiston Maritime Academy is a good school. They praised the commitment of staff to our students. Our next stop will be outstanding!

I look forward to welcoming you and your child to Ormiston Maritime Academy.

A broad and balanced curriculumAs an academy we have far more freedom than many schools to provide a varied, innovative and stimulating curriculum that offers all students the chance to develop according to their talents, interests and ambitions.

Year 7, 8 and 9 students are assigned to a pathway according to their ability, allowing for the teachers to personalise the learning according to the needs of the group to ensure students are equipped for success throughout Key Stage 4.

Year 10 and 11 students continue to study the core subjects of English, maths, science, PHSHE and PE as well as choosing option subjects specific to their learning needs be they academic, vocational or a mixture of both. Every student has the opportunity to select up to 4 options from a wide range of exciting courses. This more personalised approach enables our students to achieve high levels of success and engage in courses that provide an opportunity to truly flourish. Our curriculum has enabled every student to experience success and provides the platform for our students to realise their potential.

Wider world outside the classroomStudents are encouraged to make the most of their time here by taking full advantage of the wide range of opportunities to make their lives enjoyable and fulfilling. Field trips, visits to theatres, museums, art galleries, sports trips and foreign visits all play a key role in broadening students’ experiences.

We also have many visitors to the academy including artists, dance and theatre companies, and business and community leaders. We encourage all students to attend extended school activities: including homework and study support clubs, a vast array of sporting activities, drama, music and art groups, as well as e-learning, technology and science clubs. Many of these activities are also open to the wider community.

We promote involvement with the wider community, with many of our students taking part in local community events and initiatives.

Ormiston Maritime Academy – our communityOur academy lies at the heart of its community. Learning does not end as the academy day finishes. We offer a wide range of community learning and leisure activities on our academy campus in partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council and Franklin College.

We wish our academy to be a vibrant and thriving community – working with you to meet your needs.

Field trips, visits to theatres, museums and art galleries, as well as our annual football trip and foreign visits, play a key role in broadening our students’ experiences and education.‘‘ ’’

Working together to be our bestPastoral care at the academy plays a vital role in helping our students to achieve their full potential. Each student is assigned to one of five houses when they join, which becomes their ‘family’ within the academy. A wide range of sporting, arts and recreational activities are organized throughout the year to help develop students’ social, personal and interpersonal skills.

Within each house, there are vertical tutor groups comprised of a mix of students from Years 7 to 11. Students benefit from being able to form strong friendships with others at all stages of development. This creates a family feel and makes them feel at home from day one. Each house has its own house manager who is a non-teaching expert with the

time and skills to respond to students’ needs without the confines of a timetable. A member of the academy’s Senior Leadership Team also takes responsibility for a house. The role of the form tutor is equally important and we are proud of the positive relationships that exist between our students and our tutors. Students meet with their form tutor on a daily basis.

We also encourage parents to keep us informed of anything in a student’s life outside of the academy that may affect them. In addition, our Young Student Leaders provide our young people with a forum to voice their feelings about life at the academy and to shape the future of the academy’s development.
