February Living Green Tips:

Recycling at Home

Recycling at home or school is easy and a great way to make a difference, both locally and

globally. By recycling you can decrease the amount of energy and oil used each year to produce new products. According to the EPA, the national recycling rate is just 34%. Increasing materials recycling in the US to 60% could save the equivalent of 315 million barrels of oil per year. Check out the facts and tips below about recycling and what you can do to make a difference! Recycling Facts: A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the shelf as a new can, in as little as 60

days. To produce each week’s Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down. We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum soda cans each year. Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! More of them are thrown away! Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000

sea creatures every year! A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose and even longer if

it’s in the landfill. On average, it costs $30 per ton to recycle trash, $50 to send it to the landfill and $65 to

incinerate it. Recycling Tips: Plastic goods are assigned different numbers to grade them for recycling: #1 (PET) and

#2 (HDPE) usually used for containers, # 4 (LDPE) for bags and #7 for mixed plastics. Numbers 1 and 2 are recyclable and most recycling centers will accept them. Number 7 plastics like baby bottles, are not recyclable.

Plastic grocery bags should not be put in you recycling bins. Drop them off at your local grocery store– most stores have bins outside for drop off.

Rinse aluminum, steel & copper cans before putting them in the recycle bins. Leftover food can grow in the container and makes them unrecyclable.

Yes, you can recycle pizza boxes! Just remove the greasy parts and throw them away, recycle the rest.

Save newspapers in their own bin, the materials go directly back into newsprint recycling.

1. Write a love message on the mirror. Use lipstick or if that’s too messy – write little love notes post-it notes and hang them around…by the coffee pot, on the mirror, lunch box, on the steering wheel and on their pillow.

2. Put a note on the napkin in the lunchbox.

3. Use sidewalk chalk and write a love message on the driveway.

4. Use large paper (poster board size) to make a heart stencil and use flour to make hearts on the grass or sidewalk.

5. Write a list of ten things you admire about someone and give it to them in letter form. 6. Make a toast to him/her at dinner with friends. Or raise your glass at dinner and list the things you admire about your husband/wife for your children to hear! 7. Write a poem to your spouse – even if you can’t write – it can be goofy. Include in it references to your favorite movies, restaurants, places to go and memories. He/she will enjoy the trip down memory lane and the laugh! 8. Blow up balloons and put a loving message in each one. Fill your kids bedroom with balloons as a surprise. 9. Start a journal with kids, write notes back and forth and leave for each other in a designated space. 10. Make up love coupons to give to kids for Valentines Day (Coupon examples: Stay up one hour past bed time, dinner of your choice, game night, movie date with dad, extra scoop of ice cream night off chores, etc.) there are tons of free pintables online.

Preventing falls out of windows is as important as learning how to use one in an emergency. Unattended children run the greatest risk of falls and injuries, so the best first step is to watch your children as they play. Nothing can substitute for careful supervision.
