A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear PHS Parents:

Please make sure you have marked your calendar for the upcoming presentation regarding mental health. “A Night of Hope” will be presented on Thursday, March 22 at 6:30pm in the PHS Auditorium. Everyone has mental health. It's a part of each of us just like our physical health but often times we don't know how to get help if there's a problem. Please join us in learning about mental health and suicide prevention and how we as a community can support one another. We will discuss warning signs of suicide, ways to get support, and healthy coping strategies. Dr. Amanda McGough (a North Carolina board member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) and Jennifer Fights, NCC., LPC, from Southeast Psychology will both be presenting on March 22. We’d love to have a full auditorium to learn from these experts. “A Night of Hope” is the first in a series of mental health workshops for students and

parents. In May, we will host the 2nd part of the series and throughout the 2018-19

school year, we have planned to continue the series. Topics will include: anxiety,

depression, social media impacts on anxiety and depression, as well as teen suicide

and prevention. For each session, an expert in the mental health field will be our guest

presenter. Stay tuned for more information.

Also, I want to share with you how proud I am of our students and the way in which they

participated in the Student Council sponsored activities on Wednesday. As you recall,

these activities were organized to recognize the 17 victims of the recent Florida school

shooting. Students did a wonderful job of leading the activities and there were no

issues of disruption or disturbance at Providence. I am very honored to be able to work

with such wonderful students.

Here are some other bits of news and reminders:

Mid-Term exams for 4x4 classes begin on Friday, March 23. Mid-Term exams

are provided in the regular class during the regular bell schedule. For 4x4

classes, they count as 20% of the student’s 3rd quarter (or semester) grade. We

have a schedule to prevent students from having more than 1 mid-term exam per

day. The schedule is as follows:

Day Exam

March 23 (A) 1, 1A, 4A

March 26 (B) 2, 2B, 3B

March 27 (A) 3, 2A, 3A

March 28 (B) 4, 1B, 4B

Page 3: PROVIDENCE HIGH SCHOOL MEWS · April 9 Classes Resume on Regular Bell Schedule April 18 Early Release, 11:15 AM for Teacher Professional Development April 19 Senior Project Board

Parents who participate in morning /afternoon car pool, please be reminded that

after driving through the front driveway (the one closest to the school), there is a

stop sign with a no left turn sign. We ask that you please adhere to the no left

turn sign so that you do not get back into the car pool line and add additional

traffic to that of the parents who haven’t yet dropped off their child. We know that

it might be inconvenient, but we ask you to follow the posted traffic signs and turn

right, exit the campus of Providence to the right on Hwy 51 and then if you need

to go toward Matthews on Hwy 51, you can make a U turn at the light at Beverly

Crest. Thank you for your help .

Recently, our Student Council has organized some fun activities for our student

body. Last week, they sponsored an exciting Dodgeball tournament which raised

$3000 for the Student Hunger Drive. It was a lot of fun for the students who

participated and for those of us who laughed with (and at) the students and staff

who participated.

Today, our Student Council is sponsoring a Pep Rally to recognize all the spring

sports athletes. Tonight, they will host Reverse Homecoming festivities during

the women’s soccer game. Our Homecoming King will be crowned at half-time

of the soccer game. The weather should be nice so I encouraged our students to

come out and support our softball, baseball, and soccer athletes and coaches at

tonight’s games.

Finally, this week, we want to congratulate our PHS Executive Board on their “Canz”

video to promote the Student Hunger drive. The video has gone viral and some of our

students were featured in the Charlotte Observer, on WBTV, and on NBC Charlotte

morning shows this week. Kudos to them for great work. If you have not seen the

video, here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_hdbA2CyDY.

We would love to take credit for their rapping, singing, and music-mixing abilities, but

our students did this on their own!! Fingers are crossed that the donations of money

and canned food to support the Second Harvest Food bank result in another

championship for the PHS Student Council. We love those bragging rights! We will let

you know as soon as a winner is announced.

Best wishes for a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Harrill

SENIORS: It is Time to Start Sharing Your Great News!

The Graduating Class of 2018 has some impressive grades and skills. Colleges have been seeking you out and offering you scholarships. If you have been promised money from a school, please let us know about it. (Even if you do not plan to attend the college or even apply to that particular university, we still really want to know!) Please tell us about any email or mailing that offers you a scholarship of any dollar amount. WHY? Annually, CMS keeps the listing of which students and which high schools receive scholarship offers. PHS has led the district for many years. Please bring any letters or notifications from colleges or organizations that have offered you a scholarship (accepted or not) to the Counseling Office to Mrs. Boland. If you have any questions about this process, please come see us in the Counseling Office before school, during lunches, or after school. (Submitted 03/07/18 by Missy Reinhard, [email protected])
