March 2014

For years people have been trying to catch a Leprechaun. But unless you are extremely lucky and brighter than the average man, you will likely never catch one for yourself. Sources say that if you do get lucky and manage to catch one, don’t take your eye off of him for even a second or he’ll vanish. They are very fast little fellows.

Legend has it that a captured leprechaun will grant you three wishes or lead you to his pot of gold coins to bribe his way to freedom.

It’s been told many times that an Irish man thought he could out smart an Irish leprechaun and selected

How To Catch a Leprechaun

the three wishes. He would either go insane trying to think of what to wish for or his wishes would back fire with something bad happening.

Still, people all over the world try to catch a Leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day. Trying without succeeding can lead you to fall victim to some

leprechaun-related mischief.

Irish leprechauns are devious little creatures and will do anything to escape from man so they should never be trusted. Some say angry leprechauns are more common than a friendly one, but this is very untrue as Irish leprechauns are very friendly but tend to dislike humans who always seem to chase them for wishes and pots of gold.

It’s been said that a mischievous leprechaun has turned kid’s milk green, left green footprints scattered about, turned the toilet water green or even left

Mrs. Farley moved to St. Elizabeth Place February from her home in Waco.

Carla was born and raised in Galveston, Texas and attended the University of

New Friends at Providence Park

Wisconsin-Whitewater with plans to become a teacher. She had completed three years towards her degree, but then fell in love and decided to marry and become a full time housewife. Carla said “I do” to Mr. Leonard Farley in 1948. They were married 59 years, and had four beautiful children; Susie, Dick, Kathy, Laura. She also has 8 grandchildren.

Leonard and Carla moved to

Welcome Carla Farley Apt. 2207Waco in 1953, to raise their family. Mr. Farley worked at State Farm Insurance Company, for more than 58 years. I’m sure a lot of you recognize the name.

Carla loved riding horses, swimming, water-skiing and the great outdoors while growing up.

She is excited to meet new friends and can’t wait to play BINGO.

James David Parker was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma October 31, 1961. David graduated 1979 from McArthur High School in Irving, Texas. His college education began at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, studying math and physics. He was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree in 1983. As a graduate student, he was invited to join the Mathematics faculty as a graduate assistant, teaching college Algebra to freshman students.

Unfortunately his teaching

career was cut short because of an automobile accident. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was not expected to survive beyond 24 hours. Nonetheless, he lived and was in a coma for 37 days. After a truly miraculous recovery, David spent the next 18 months enduring rehabilitation at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. His father, Dr. John C. Parker, has recounted the experience in a book entitled, “In His Favor Is Life!” The book is beautifully written and one of the most inspiring stories you’ll ever read.

Welcome David Parker Apt. 2204

Post rehabilitation, David worked five years for J.C. Penney’s and three years at Albertson’s. In 2009, he moved to Waco with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John C. Parker and is now a PROUD Texan.

We are proud to have you at St. Elizabeth’s Place, Mr. Parker!

Elvis Takes His Show to Providence ParkElvis was greeted by adoring fans when he stopped in at Providence Park. His rendition of Happy Birthday was greatly appreciate by all those in attendance! But as all good things must come to an end, Elvis has left the building!

Mrs. Terry moved to St. Elizabeth Place, from her home in Waco. She was born and raised in Leroy, Texas and graduated from West High School. Annie married Woodrow “Jack” Terry in 1945. He served in the army and then went on to work 30 years for United States Postal Service, here in Waco. They raised four boys and one daughter; Robert, John,

Paul, Mark and Patricia. She also has 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She loves the Holidays, when the entire family celebrates together.

Mrs. Terry kept busy raising children, volunteering at church, and participating in school activities. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, and canning. She also is

related to David McCauley by marriage but please don’t hold that against her.

Welcome!

The Amana Society

One morning in the latter part of January, I made my way to the laundry room to make use of the equipment there. I discovered that the washer I customarily used had been replaced with a sparkling new machine. I wasn’t sure of the operating procedure—it’s more complex than the one I had been using. Since I heard nothing after getting things started, I called maintenance, thinking someone there might be informed about the unit’s operation.

I kept an eye on the washer and noted that something really was happening, but I wasn’t sure what. Momentarily three residents from the other end of the hall came to look over the new machine. A bit later, three maintenance helpers appeared. Needless to say, with seven interested people in that small room, I had to chuckle as everyone had an opinion. The only comment I remember was William’s statement that the new washer is very quiet.

When I finished my chore and was about to close the washer cover, I noticed “Amana,” the unit’s manufacturer. From a class long ago, I recalled that the Amana ancestors were German Pietists who were persecuted by the Lutheran Church and the government. At times they were imprisoned, flogged and even stripped of their possessions. They refused to participate in the military; they avoided public schools; and they practiced communal economic activity.

Seeking a better life, 800 Pietists migrated to America in 1844. They pooled their resources to purchase 5,000 acres of farmland near Buffalo, New York. As their numbers grew, they decided to move in 1856 to eastern Iowa where they bought 26,000 acres. Seven villages were established on that acreage. Residents received a home, medical care, meals, household necessities and schooling for the children. Property and resources were shared.

Under Iowa laws, the community had to incorporate as a business, so the Amana Society was founded in 1859. The constitution provided for a governing body, informally known as trustees, to oversee the conduct of the Society, both internal affairs and external business interests. They were elected annually by popular vote of Elders from the communities. Villages were governed by those Elders, whose selection was based on their piety and spirituality.

For nearly eighty years, the Society maintained an almost completely self-sufficient local economy; however, in 1932, amidst the Great Depression, the people set aside their communal way of life. Rather than leave their land or watch their children leave, they changed. They voted to form the Amana Society, Inc., a profit-sharing corporation to manage the farmland, the mills, and the larger enterprises.

Happy Birthday!!!

The most widely known business enterprise that emerged from the Society was Amana Refrigeration, initially making beverage coolers. In 1947 the company made the first upright freezer. Raytheon Corporation purchased the company in 1965, with Amana continuing as an autonomous division. Two years later, Amana produced the first commercial microwave oven. The division was eventually sold to Maytag which today is a part of Whirlpool.

Leprechauns continued

green kiss marks on a sleeping trapper!

Even the best trappers tend to be out smarted when using the most powerful bait... (Lucky Charms cereal)! Instead of waking up to a new green

friend, instead the Leprechaun will leave taunting messages like, “good try,” or “can’t catch me!” It’s especially cruel when he leaves behind chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil!

It may end up being more trouble than its worth if you do decide to pursue a chase. With cities in Ireland expanding, the poor wee leprechauns are being driven further underground away from man, taking their rainbows and gold with them.

So, you have to ask yourself - Do you really want to catch a Leprechaun? Is it really worth bringing a mischievous little friend to yourself and the other residents at Providence Park. If your answer is yes, don’t be surprised if your St. Patrick’s Day Happy Hour take a turn and you end up with green drinks. Good luck and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
