Menus are discussed with our residents and staff, so that we can provide enjoyable choices.
Although we do have set meal times, residents are welcome to snacks and drinks when they wish.
We are also happy to provide tea and coffee for visiting family and friends.
We like to make birthdays and anniversaries extra special. Cakes are made and decorated and all
of the residents join in the celebrations. We are delighted when family and friends can also attend.
We also have on-site laundry facilities to take care of our Residents’ needs. Each resident has
their own laundry box to hold his or her clothes whilst being laundered and ironed.
Our friendly experienced team of care staff are on duty 24 hours a day and seven days a
week. An emergency call bell system is fitted in every bedroom, lounge, dining room and
bathrooms, and there is a fire alarm system fitted throughout the building. There is a strict
no smoking policy within the Home.
Our staff are trained to provide residential care for our residents based on their individual needs
together with respect and dignity. The Home aims to provide services meeting the whole range of
needs of our residents. The type of services provided demands high standards of care and social
care supported by other care professionals.
We believe it is important to meet the social and spiritual needs of our residents. In our
multicultural society, residents needs vary dramatically. We discuss all aspects with our residents
and their families to do our utmost to fulfil their needs.
We have an OPEN VISITING policy at Glenside Care Home. Family and friends are encouraged
to visit regularly. We do not believe in having visiting hours. This is our Residents’ home and we
want them to have visitors as they would have had prior to their arrival at Glenside Care Home.

At Glenside Care Home we offer accommodation on a single or shared basis. We understand that
some prefer the independence of a single room whilst others prefer companionship in shared
accommodation, but all are ensured privacy and discretion. We are happy to consider single
occupancy of shared rooms.
All of our rooms are tastefully decorated and furnished. We encourage our residents to make their
room as comfortable as possible by introducing their own items of furniture, ornaments etc and to
make their accommodation individual to them.
Glenside Care Home has been designed to give residents the level of care they need. This may be
from simple companionship to hands on care. The Home is friendly to those with mobility
difficulties using wheelchairs and walking aids and when needed, provides facilities such as
specialist bathing and showering rooms. Where necessary, we can organize, on a chargeable basis,
specialist transport or ambulance services to help in the relocation of your relative to Glenside
Care Home, from anywhere in the country.
Doctors, District Nurses, Dentists, Opticians, Chiropodists and, where possible, other outside care
agencies visit the Home to make it easier for our residents. We have a hairdresser visit weekly and
the local newsagent delivers daily papers and magazines to those who require them.
The directors and shareholders of Glenside Care Home Ltd are Trevor and Shirley Hutchinson.
Trevor is also the Responsible Person on our registration. They have been involved with Glenside
Care Home since December 2000. Previous experience has been involved in running care homes
for the elderly near Market Harborough and in Birmingham. Both of the directors have taken

many courses in care and awareness and Trevor has completed a course for registered owners and
managers recommended by the Inspection Unit. Shirley and Trevor have achieved the NVQ Level
4 Care Award and the NVQ Level 4 Registered Managers’ Award.
Sandra Gamble is the manager of Glenside Care Home and is the Registered Manager on our
registration. Sandra was a Residential Social Worker at Kings Heath Care Home until its closure
in July 2002. She has many years’ experience in working with the elderly and also those with
dementia and already holds an NVQ Level 3. Sandra has also taken many courses in Care and
Person Centred Approach Care and has achieved the NVQ 4 Management Award and the NVQ 4
Care Award.
Our shift leader care staff, Jane Radley, Celia Bowman, Karen Nutt and Samantha Faulkner, have
been with the Home for some time. Jane, Celia, Karen and Sam have all completed NVQ Level 3
in Care. All shift leaders have undertaken many other training sessions to assist our residents’
needs. Our care staff are also trained in basic first aid.
Our care staff have undertaken care and awareness courses along with lifting and handling and
food hygiene. A significant number have attained NVQ Level 2 in Care or higher. The Home
believes that training is necessary to ensure we can meet our residents’ changing needs. Each
member of staff has a formal supervision six times a year and, whilst all new staff go through an
induction and training process, a regular training review is held for all staff.
Staff will be confirmed in their post only after completion of a satisfactory police check and
satisfactory check of the Protection of Vulnerable Adults and UKCC registers.
If you wish to come and view Glenside Care Home please call our manager, Mrs Sandra
Gamble and arrange an appointment or if you wish you may call in at your convenience.

traumatic change in his or her lifestyle.
We aim to provide care, within our registration categories, for
people of both sexes over 40 years of age with dementia and
mental health issues, who can no longer care for themselves in
their own homes. We care for these individuals without
providing nursing care.
We adopt a Person Centred Care approach for each Resident at
Glenside to promote their independence and the care model
provided.
Glenside Care Home provides services at 179 – 181 Weedon

been involved with Glenside Care Home since December 2000. Previous experience
has been involved in running care homes for the elderly near Market Harborough and
in Birmingham. Both of the directors have taken various courses to reflect the needs
of Residents and Trevor has completed a course for registered owners and managers
recommended by the Inspection Unit. He has also completed NVQ 3 in Direct
Training and Support and the Registered Managers Award. Shirley & Trevor have
completed the NVQ Level 4 Care Award and NVQ Level 4 Registered Managers’

Sandra Gamble is the manager of Glenside Care Home and is the Registered Manager
on our registration. Sandra was a Residential Social Worker at Kings Heath Care
Home until its closure in July 2002. She has many years experience in working with
the elderly and also those with dementia and already holds an NVQ Level 3. Sandra
too has taken courses to reflect Residents’ needs and has achieved the Registered
Managers Award and the NVQ 4 in Care Award.
Our shift leader care staff have been with the Home for some time. They have all
completed NVQ 3 in Care. All shift leaders have undertaken many other training
sessions to assist our Residents’ needs. Our care staff are also trained in basic first aid.
Our care staff have undertaken core training such as lifting and handling and food
hygiene. Most of our care assistants have completed NVQ level 2 in care or higher but
we provide additional training to reflect the complex needs of our Residents.
We currently operate with four care assistants on duty in the day and two waking care
assistants at night. Our manager works in addition to this staffing ratio along with our
housekeeping staff.
In addition, we have 2 cooks, 4 housekeepers and a handyman/gardener. Cooks
receive basic food handling training and nutritional and presentational skills. Our
handyman has basic health and safety training and has many years experience in the
insurance maintenance industry. Housekeepers are given in-house training during
their induction as to the needs of our residents and the Home and to maintain high
standards at all times.
The Home believes that training is necessary to ensure we can meet our residents’
changing needs. Each member of staff has a formal supervision six times a year and,
whilst all new staff go through an induction and training process, a regular training
review is held for all staff. Staff will be confirmed in their post only after completion
of a satisfactory CRB check and satisfactory check of the Protection of Children and
Vulnerable Adults and UKCC registers.

to meet our aims and objectives in offering care to those unable to look after
themselves.

the individual to ensure we can care for their needs. Invite the resident and
their family to spend time in the home to discover suitability. Take account of

their physical, social and emotional activity or relationships bearing in mind,
particularly for younger adults, they may still have dependent children or
financial commitments and offer support and access to organisations who may
be able to help.
7. As residents’ requirements change consult with families and medical
practitioners for a review of residents’ needs and suitability of Glenside in

as normal a lifestyle as possible.
9. Enhance further developments to meet the health care and psychological needs

10. Ensure close communication between all services and agencies and not
allowing the individual to “get lost” in the system.
11. Regular evaluations of the service will take place. The directors already

19. Discuss with residents and their families ways in which we can maximise their
independence and dignity. For example, through self-care, self-medication,
spiritual needs, entertainment programmes and food choices.
20. To encourage the resident to maintain and improve upon their current levels of
functioning through communication and understanding of the present and
recalling events from the past of importance to them.
21. To provide as much as possible a “home from home” atmosphere and allow
the resident to enjoy quality of life in a friendly atmosphere. We provide
single or shared accommodation furnished and decorated to a high standard
but encourage the resident to bring items of furniture, ornaments etc to make
their accommodation individual to them.
22. We encourage family to be involved with us in the care of the resident and
provide an OPEN VISITING policy within the home. If necessary, residents
are able to use the Home’s phone for private calls. This can be used in the
privacy of their room or in the office.
23. We encourage our residents to mix with and enjoy the company of others but
also understand the need for privacy. Whilst activities are provided at the
Home by our staff or external entertainers, we encourage our residents to
continue their own hobbies and leisure interests and will do what we can to
assist. We also understand that some Residents will wish to attend religious
ceremonies depending on their faith and we will assist those residents in
making arrangements to attend them with their families. For those who do not
have families to assist them, we will endeavour to help them attend with staff
support and by using specialist transport services, where necessary, whilst
being mindful of costs the Resident will incur. The local Vicar holds a
monthly service at the Home for all denominations but where requested we
will do our utmost to have the relevant religious official visit the Home for
individuals.

THE HOME
Glenside Care Home is a large residence set in its own grounds with gardens to the
rear.
There are two large lounges at the front on the ground floor. There is also one large
dining room on the ground floor. A passenger lift operates between the two floors. A
stair lift is also available. There are numerous bathroom, toilets and shower facilities
on each floor, all with support aids.
There are 25 bedrooms in Glenside Care Home, 4 have ensuite toilet facilities and one
is for shared accommodation. All single rooms are greater than 10 square metres in
size and all double rooms are greater than 16 square metres in size. These are
requirements of the Care Standards Act 2000 and Health & Social Care Act 2008.
The Care Standards Act 2000, for all new registered Homes, calls for 80:20 ratio of
single rooms to shared rooms and 4.1 square metres of lounge and dining space per
Resident. Glenside Care Home currently has 80:20 ratio of single to shared
rooms and the lounge/dining space is in excess of the requirement.
LIAISON WITH RESIDENTS
We realise that moving to a care home will be a major change to their lifestyle and,
even though, we have to care for many different personalities and characters we strive
to understand each individual’s preferences.
We trust that our Residents will feel open to discuss any issues, no matter how trivial
they may seem at the time, with the manager or staff.
In addition, the manager and staff will regularly chat with Residents and their families
to try and ensure that issues are brought to our attention and resolved.
The Directors visit the Home on a regular basis and if any Resident, or member of
their family, wishes to meet with the Director during the visit, then an appointment
can be made via the manager. You may also contact the Directors by writing to the
Home address.
Where possible, Residents are encouraged to follow their own hobbies and interests.
Our staff organise group activities within the Home from music and dancing to film

afternoons and also individual activities such as a walk to the shops or drawing and
painting. We like to obtain a life history for our Residents. We do this by talking to
the Resident and to their families and completing questionnaires. Activities are
undertaken away from the Home to allow our Residents to mix and socialise in the
community.
Whilst Residents are encouraged to maintain their own lifestyle and mix with the
others in the Home, we understand their need for dignity and privacy. Where possible,
Residents (or their next of kin) are consulted over the compilation of their care plan.
Discussions take place over
such matters as self-administration of medication, what times they would like to go to
bed and get up at and whether or not they would like to be checked on through the
night. Residents are helped to handle their own affairs with access to family members
or independent advocates being sought where necessary. All rooms have door locks
and an assessment is made of each Resident’s capabilities prior to providing keys.
Whilst the overall needs and views of the Residents have to be taken into account to
maintain a smooth operation within the Home, the Directors and the Manager like to
seek views from individual Residents and their families. Views will be taken into
account when formulating the policies and procedures of the Home. We also send out
a Satisfaction Questionnaire which we encourage families to complete, anonymously
if they wish.
Admission Policy
The Manager will deal with all referrals for assessment. Potential residents and their
families are asked to provide as much information as possible during the admission
process to aid the manager make a judgement as to the suitability of the Home for the
resident. We also consult with medical professionals where applicable. We do not
accept emergency admissions.
Admission to the home is subject to assessment and, where necessary, requires the
approval of Care Managers.
For residential, respite or day care, normally referrals from various sources are
channelled through the Care Managers, except for private individuals.
A director will deal with all aspects of fees and associated costs for residents
admitted. The director will try to help and give information on financial matters and,
where necessary, help the Resident or their family access the support needed.
Residents will be admitted for an initial trial period of one month, which will then be
reviewed with the resident, their family and care managers and health advisers, if
applicable.
© Glenside Care Home Ltd
It will be necessary for the manager to ensure that, during the pre-admission
assessment, that the Home can meet the needs of the resident within our Aims and
Objectives and our registration.
Prior to admission, each resident or his or her family will be given a copy of:
1. Our Statement of Purpose.
2. Our Admission Policy.
3. The Home’s Brochure.
4. The Terms and Conditions of Residence, which details fees and charges.
5. The Home’s Complaint’s Procedure.
6. Any other information, which may be relevant to that individual resident.
The manager will ensure that residents and their families are kept fully informed
during the admission process.

service which is reasonably possible, we understand from time to time there may be
complaints in relation to any aspect of the home. Any complaints, no matter how

query and they will try to help. If they cannot help, then the staff member will pass on

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES IN THE EVENT OF FIRE
The safety of our Residents is paramount. It is, therefore, important that all Residents
help us to minimise the risk of fire. Naked flames must not be used and flammable
items must not be stored in your room. Residents’ personal electrical items must
undergo portable appliance testing when entering the Home or being brought in a later
date. Residents’ own furniture must meet the Furniture and Furnishings 1988 (Fire
Safety) Regulations. Doors to rooms must not be wedged open. Residents will be
shown the emergency exits on admission to the Home and regular fire alarm tests are
conducted.
1. STAY CALM
How you react in the first few minutes of the incident will determine the
outcome of the fire. On finding a fire, set off the alarm from any break
glass point or tell a
member of staff to raise the alarm. Do not attempt to fight the fire yourself
and ensure that you and any other Residents near you move away from the
fire.
2. SAFETY
As soon as the alarm has been sounded, all fire doors held open on
magnetic clips will automatically shut. On hearing the alarm wait for a
member of staff to give you assistance. As you make your way out of the
building please ensure that all doors are closed behind you. This will add
to your safety as you move through the building.
3. INSTRUCTIONS
It is important that you follow the instructions of staff members. They will
have already called the Fire Department and staff will direct you to follow
a particular route from the building or may ask you to move to a different
location within the building, which may be safer for you.
Please ensure that you:
Do not attempt to fight the fire yourself.
Move away from danger and do not stop to collect any belongings.
Do not use the lifts.
Do not re-enter the building.

Follow the instructions of staff or Fire Department Officers.
