Monthly Drawings Held for Social Media Brand AdvocatesWhat is a brand advocate? A brand advocate is someone who elevates your brand through word of mouth marketing.

Employee advocates (YOU!) know everything about our business. Your inside knowledge, combined with your relatable nature, makes you a powerful tool in advocacy!

Social media adds a completely new element to word-of-mouth marketing.

In January, we launched a drawing for employees who “like’’ and “share’’ social media posts on Facebook and Instagram. Each month an employee’s name is drawn from all of the employees participating in social media sharing for a quarter-zip RiverView pullover. Share RiverView’s posts on social media and you may be the next winner.

Not on social media? That’s okay. Old fashioned word of mouth is also effective! Thank you to everyone who shares the news of RiverView’s exceptional care!

Anderson Passes RN BoardsCongratulations to McKenzie Anderson, Inpatient Unit, on passing her recent RN boards!

Ashley Dufault Named ED CoordinatorAshley Default, a familiar face in both the Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit, is taking on a new role - Emergency Department coordinator.

“Ashley brings an outstanding level of skill to this position,’’ shared Annie Waldal, director of the Inpatient Unit and Emergency Department. “She is cross-trained to ICU, OB, MSP, and ED. She will continue working between the IPU and ED in addition to her management days. Welcome to your new role, Ashley.’’

Dufault, a graduate of Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks, began work-ing at RiverView as an LPN in 2016. She passed her boards and started as an RN in 2017. Ashley and her husband have three kids, Beckett, 7, Whitten, 5, and Violette, 1, two dogs and a cat. The family lives on a farm outside of Argyle.

“I am excited for my new position because it is a chance to increase consistency in the Emergency Department,’’ she shared. “It is also a great opportunity to increase teamwork between departments, specifically the Inpatient Unit. Since I have worked on both the Inpatient Unit, and the Emergency Department, I feel like I have a good understanding of both departments and can be a good liaison between the two units. The Emergency Department is an amazing group of doctors, nurses, and paramedics and I am so excited to have such a great role in the department!’’

Nurse Practice Council Impacts Sanford Policy, One Chart Did you know RiverView has a Nurse Practice Council? The Council was launched in the fall of 2019. One of the focuses of the Council is evidenced-based policy and practice review and revision, according to April Grunhovd, CNO.

Recently, as the Council reviewed RiverView’s policy and practices regardingperipheral IV care, it was noted that current evidence does not recommend replacement of peripheral IVs at 96 hours. As a result of the findings, RiverView’s policy was updated and a request sent to Sanford’s One Chart hospital operations contact to remove a reminder in the electronic medical record that prompts to replace IV at 96 hours. Grunhovd reported that the request was taken to Sanford’s Enterprise Policy Committee and the change in practice was acknowledged, their enterprise policy revised, and the One Chart Reminder will soon be removed from One Chart.

“Kudos to this amazing team for its use of research and evidence to impact care practices not only at RiverView, but regionally as well,’’ Grunhovd concluded.

Monthly, Public CPR Classes Resume July 9RiverView Health is once again offering CPR classes to the public. The next classes are scheduled for Thursday, July 9 from 6 to 10 pm.

RiverView’s HeartSaver CPR AED class is offered for those needing certification. The cost of the course is $45; this includes the HeartSaver CPR AED eCard and book. This class is 4 hours long with a test at the end of the session.

The other CPR class offered at RiverView monthly is the Friends and Family course for those that do not need certification. No test or card is issued for this course. Each participant receives a Friends and Family CPR book. This course is free of charge thanks to the generous support of the Crookston American Legion Post 20. The course contains basic information about what to do in life-threatening situations, and is designed for participants of all ages. This class is 4 hours long.

Other class dates in 2020 are Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10. All classes are held in the RiverView Home Care Building at 721 S. Minnesota Street, Crookston. Registration is required. To register or for more information, call 281-9405.

Due to COVID-19, class sizes are limited. No walk-ins will be accepted. Participants are required to provide/wear their own masks.

RiverView offers these classes as part of its American Heart Association (AHA) Community Training Center. Contracted Community Training Centers, like RiverView, are the only sites permitted to offer AHA courses to the public and professionals through their affiliated instructors and programs.

The American Heart Association is not responsible for any fees charged for these courses. The AHA strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in all AHA courses and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the AHA. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials, do not represent income to the AHA.

Hours of Operation to Return to Normal at North Clinic July 13RiverView's North Clinic will return to its regular hours of 7 am to 7 pm beginning July 13. The Clinic is also open from 9 am to 1 pm on weekends.

"As visits continue to pick up in the Clinic, we want our patients to have the convenience of same day appointments and our extended hours of 7 am to 7 pm allowing more options for our community," shared Amy Seaver, director of Clinics.

As always, RiverView continues to keep the well-being of its patients and staff its top priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. The following restrictions are in effect to assure the safety of everyone at RiverView facilities:

• Patients will continue to wait in their vehicles until their provider is ready to see them, rather than in the waiting room.

• For the comfort of patients, one companion/visitor is allowed with each patient in all outpatient areas, including Clinics, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory Services, Rehab Services, Emergency Department, and with anyone having outpatient surgery. One visitor is allowed with each patient staying in the hospital, except for any area designated a COVID-19 unit. Visitors must be over the age of 18.

• Visitors must wear a face mask (cloth or surgical) when in RiverView facilities at all times. Visitors are asked to bring their own masks.

• All visitors will continue to be screened according to current guidelines. If the visitor has a temperature or screens positive to any screening questions, he/she is not allowed to visit.

Do not visit if you are sick. As a reminder, if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, call RiverView's Coronavirus Nurse Screening Hotline at 218-470-7983 before visiting any of our locations.

Telehealth Visits Offered to Nursing Home Residents through EDWhile most patients are back to visiting their provider in person in the clinics, extra precautions are still in place for the vulnerable community living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Recent statistics by the Minnesota Department of Health show that residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities account for 79 percent of COVID-19 deaths in Minnesota. Therefore, RiverView Health has developed a special telehealth (video/telephone visits) service for that population, allowing them to consult with a provider from the safety of their residence to determine if an emergency room visit is necessary or if care can be provided through telehealth.

The emergent nursing home telehealth visits are done through RiverView's Emergency Department, allowing the availability of visits at all hours of the day or night.

"I think it is a great addition to our department," shared Riley Hermreck, RN in RiverView's Emergency Department. "The service was developed to help save transfers from the nursing home when it is a situation that can be completed over telehealth. It's a benefit when we can help patients in the comfort of their own home and possibly save them a trip to the Emergency Department."

For more information on this service, call the RiverView's Emergency Department at 281-9450.

Pedestrian Safety

According to Injury Facts, in 2017, more than 16 percent of all traffic deaths were pedestrians. Every age group is vulnerable, though 10- to 14-year-olds and 50- to 69 year-olds have 20 percent or more pedestrian deaths as a percentage of all traffic fatalities.

Follow these tips to stay safe as a pedestrian:• Whenever possible, walk on the sidewalk; if no sidewalk is

available, walk facing traffic• Follow the rules of the road, obeying all traffic signs and

signals• Cross streets at crosswalks• If no crosswalk is available and your view is blocked, move to

a place where you can see oncoming traffic (this applies to our NW Parking Lot)

• Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street, making eye contact with drivers of oncoming vehicles to make sure they see you

• Stay alert – avoid cell phone use and wearing earbuds• Avoid alcohol and drug impairment when walking• Wear bright and/or reflective clothing, and use a flashlight at night• Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways or backing up in parking lots• Children younger than 10 should cross the street with an adult

Head Up, Phone Down

Distracted walking incidents are on the rise, and everyone with a cell phone is at risk. We are losing focus on our surroundings and putting our safety at risk. The solution: Stop using phones while walking, and not just in crosswalks and intersections. Over half of distracted walking injuries occur in our own homes, proving that we need to stay aware of our surroundings whether indoors and out.

Pedestrian Safety Is a Shared Responsibility

When driving, help keep pedestrians of all ages safe:• Obey all traffic laws, especially posted speed limits in school zones• Watch for pedestrians at all times and be extra cautious when backing up• Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, making eye contact to indicate that you see them• Never pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks• Stay alert – avoid distracted driving• Do not drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
