Among our many highlights in 2011:
• 78 campershipswereawardedtochildrenfromallovertheUnitedStates.Thesechildrenattendedoneofourfiveassociatecampswho,asusual,providedexperiencesofthehighestqualityforourcampers.
• The Board of Trustees approved the use of a portion of our reserved funds to fully fund the Sis Cheley Endowment Fund, the Clay I. Colvig Memorial Campership Fund, and the Anna Belle Kritser Memorial Fund. Thisbringsthenumberofendowedcampershipstonine.
• TheBoardapprovedthehiringofourfirst-everpaidstaff member to assist in the increasing administrative load. Withthetremendousgrowthinthenumberofchildrenwesendtocampeachyear,ourdesiretomaintainthehighqualityofourselectionandacceptanceprocess,andvolunteersspreadoutacrosstheUnitedStates,ithasbecomeimpossibletocompleteallthatneedstobedoneinatimelyandwellorganizedmanner.Ournewadministrativeassistant,KarenSmith,liveswithherhusbandandtwochildreninLittleton,Colorado,attendedsummercampasachild,andworksparttimefortheFoundationfromherhome.Shehasmadeatremendousdifferenceintheefficiencyofourorganization,andherprofessionalismanddedicationareverymuchappreciated.
• We initiated a Fourth Summer programthatallowscamperswhohavecompletedthreeJACFsummerstoapplyforoneadditionalsummer.TheFourthSummerprograminvolvescampersdemonstratingleadershipwhilegivingbacktotheircommunity.Readmoreabouttheprogramonpage10.
• We completely overhauled our websitetoupdateitandmakeituserfriendly.Pleasetakealookifyouhaven’talready,toseewonderfulpicturesandvideos(www.cheleyfoundation.org).
In2011,theBoardelectedAlanAter,MarthaLivingstonandKirstinEddingsSullivanasnewtrustees.ThethreenewtrusteeshavealreadydonemuchworkfortheFoundation.Alancreatedthevideo,thelinktowhichmanyofyoureceivedviaemail(andifyoudidn’t,it’samust-seeonourwebsite).MarthaisourliaisonwithCampKawanheeaswellasanassistantwiththeleadershipcomponentoftheFourthSummerpilotprogram;andKirstinhasworkedtirelesslywithourcampershipcommitteetoupdateandfacilitatetheapplicationprocess.
RetiringfromtheboardthisyearareJohnEnlundandLoraStoppel.Johnhasbeenanoutstandingtreasurerandmadegreatimprovementsinourfinancialinfrastructure.John’sintegrityandethicalstandardsassuredallofusthatourmoneyisingoodhands.LoraservedtheFoundationwellasassistanttreasurerandeditoroftheannualreportfortwoyears.LorawascreativeandcommittedandwasatruebelieverintheFoundation’smission.WethankbothJohnandLorafortheirdedication.

1.TheJohnAustinCheleyFoundationlooksforyouth,ages10–15,whoexhibithighmoralcharacterandleadershippotential.Thisyoungpersonwouldbenefitfromasummercampexperiencebutsimplylacksthefinancialresourcestoaffordanextended-staycamp.
2.Thefamilyincomeneedstobelessthan$65,000.Theapplicationrequiresverificationoffamilyfinancesincludingacopyofthefirstpageoftheincometaxformorotherverificationoffinances.
3.Theunderstandingfromtheyouth/familythatthecamperwillbeawayfromhomefor3-4weeksduringthesummer.

A Partnership is Forged Between JACF, Local Schools, and Dick’s Sporting GoodsIn2011,theJohnAustinCheleyFoundationpartneredwithGoddardMiddleSchoolandEastElementarySchoolinLittleton,Colorado,tohelpidentifydeservingstudentswhowouldbenefitfromanextendedsummercampexperience.Afterpresentingtheopportunitytotheschooladministration,schoolstaffmembersjumpedatthechancetobeabletoprovidethistypeoflife-changingexperienceforsomeoftheirstudents.TheadministrativeandcounselingteamsdiscussedandnominatedstudentswhowouldmeettheeligibilityrequirementsforaJACFcampershipaward,presentedtheopportunitytothestudentsandtheirparents,andservedastheJACFrecruitersforthestudentswhowerenominated.FivestudentsfromGoddardandtwostudentsfromEastElementaryappliedandwereacceptedbyJACFtoattendcampinthesummerof2011.ThreeofthesevenstudentsattendedColvigSilverCamps,twoattendedCheleyCamps,oneattendedSanbornWesternCamps,andoneattendedCampKawanheeforBoys.
Oncethestudentswereaccepted,communitymembersandDick’sSportingGoodssteppedintohelpthestudentsandtheirfamiliesacquirealloftheclothingandgeartheywouldneedfortheirtimeatcamp.Manyindividualsdonatedgentlyusedtop-of-the-linegearandmadefinancialcontributions,andDick’sofferedustremendousdiscountsonthedaythatJACFtookallthekidsshopping.Dick’shadthreesalespeoplereadyforourgrouptohelpwithsizing,productselection,andtoanswerquestionsfromthestudents--formostofthem,thiswasthefirsttimetheyhadeverlookedatcamping,hiking,andoutdooradventuregear.JACFextendsoursincerethankstoDick’sSportingGoodsinCentennial,Colorado,foralloftheirhelpandsupport.

IhadthechancetodothingsthatIneverwouldhavegottentodoifIhadn’tgonetocamp,suchasfishing,backpacking,canoeing,andhorsebackriding.IgotthechancetotrymanynewthingsanddiscoveredthatIreallylikehikingandcanoeing!Ialsolearnedalotaboutmyselfatcampthissummer.ItbroughtoutsomepersonalitytraitsthatIneverreallyknewIhadandhelpeddevelopthemtoo.SometraitswerethatIamreallyoutgoing,funny,positive,andpersistent.IfoundoutthatpeoplelikemeforjustbeingmeandIfeltIcouldreallybemyselfatcampwithoutothersjudgingme.Ihavebeencarryingthosetraitswithmetoeighthgrade,andIhavefoundthatIhavebeenmakingfriendsmuchmoreeasilyandinmyclassesIhavebeenmuchmorepositiveandenthusiastic.IthasevenbeenaffectingmyschoolworkbecauseIhavebeenworkinghardandbeenpersistentintryingtounderstandallofthecriteriainallofmyclasses.

Sanbornreallychangesmeeachyear.Thisyeartaughtmemoreaboutmyselfthanever.IlearnedthatnomatterhowmuchIdon’tthinkIcandosomething,ifIconvincemyself,Icandoit.IalsolearnedthatwhenIconstantlyencourageothers,oftenitturnsintoself-motivationformebecauseitmakesmewanttobemoreofaleader.Sanbornalsogivesmetheopportunitytomeetmanydifferentkindsofpeoplewithmanydifferentpersonalities.Theyteachyoumanythingsaboutdifferentplaces.Withoutthecampership,Iwouldn’tgettheopportunitytolearnaboutmyselfandgetthiswonderfulexperiencewiththebestpeopleintheworld,whohappentobemyfamilynow.

ThebiggestchallengeIfacedwaswhenIwasonmySoleMountaintripandclimbing3fourteenersinoneweek.ThehardestoneformewasMountElbert.Theywantedtogetmeoffthemountain,butIwouldn’tletthembecauseIwassoclosetothesummit.SoIpushedmyselfandImadeit.Thisyearhaschangedmeandtaughtmenewthingsaboutmyself.ItshowedhowmentallystrongIam.Camptaughtmethatallthingsarenoteasyasyouthink,orastheyappeartoyou.

Ihiked6.5milescarryinga45-poundpackandcompletedthewholetrip,whichwasjustawesome.RidingahorsebarebackwassomethingI’dneverdonebeforeandthethrillwasbeyondbelief.IoutcampedwhichwasaprivilegeI’dneverhadbeforeandallthecampersandcounselorsmadeitanunforgettableexperience.IlearnedthatnomatterhowweakortiredIam,Icanovercomeanyobstaclethatcomesmyway.FromthatIalsolearnedthatpushingmyselfbeyondmylimitsshowshoweasyitistoaccomplishthegoalsthatseemimpossible.IalsolearnedthatthroughtheCodeofLivingIamneveraloneandthatthereisalwayssomeonetheretoencourageme.

Jonathanhasmoreconfidenceinhimselfandhisabilitiestobeonhisownandtakecareofhimself.He’slearnedtotravelindependently.Whiledevelopingastrongsenseofwhoheisincharacterandbeliefs,healsohaslearnedtoblend,andenjoypeoplewhoseethingsdifferentlythanhedoes.Eachsummerhereturnsmoremature,Iseeconfidencebuildinginhimandasuretyofwhoheisandwhathewantsoutoflife.
Isaacisprofoundlyskilledatremainingcalm.Ireallyseethisskillbecomestrongereachyearheattendscamp.Colvigreallyworksatkeepingcampersinarespectfulandkindwayofcommunicatingwithoneanother.Isaac’smuchlesslikelytobejudgmentalofhispeersbecauseofcamptimeworkingonthisskill.AlthoughIsaacisverybalanced,hecanstrugglewithleadershipandspeakinginpublic.However,whenheisatcamp,thenewpeersandenvironmenthelphimtobetterusethispartofhimself.Whenhereturnstoregularlife,hewalkstaller,leadsmoreandleavestheinsecuritybehind.

Delaneycouldn’tstoptalkingaboutcamppriortogoing.Onceshereturneditwasallshecouldstilltalkabout.Delaneyfilledusinoneverydetailofeveryadventure,allofwhichseemedequallyimportantandfuntoher.Sheisatrooperwhowilltryanythingonce.Shetriedcamp,awayfromfamilyandhomeandiseagertoreturn.Ofallherexperiences,Ibelieveshelearnedthemostbybeingawayfromhome,friendsandfamilyimmersedinnature,with“strangers.”Shetookthisopportunitytomakefriendsandtakechancesallowinghertogrowasaperson.
IbelieveAlizelearnedthatthereareresponsibilitiesforeveryoneregardlessofrace,finances,andage.Shecamebackmorewillingtocarryoutherresponsibilities.

ThecampingexperiencemeanttheworldtoLindsey.Shewassoworriedaboutgoingbutwhenshearrivedatcamp,shewasmadetofeelsowelcome.Everyonewassofriendly.WhenLindseyreturnedhomesheseemedmoregrownup,moreconfident,andmoreself-reliant.Herinterestinhorseshasgrownevenmore.YouhavegivenheranexperienceIcouldnotprovideherandshehasblossomedwithit.Youshowedherhowverycapableshereallyis!
Claireismuchmoreself-confidentnow.Shetakesinitiativenowinwaysshedidnotbefore(homework,housework,etc.)andshehasgrownsociallyaswell.
ThiscampingexperiencemadeAlanstrongerandmoresecurethanever.Itcouldn’tbebetter.Heisabouttostarthighschoolwithsomuchconfidence.Thiscampmeantsomuchtohimineverysense.Helearnedhowtobemoreresponsible,respectfulandtakecareofhimselfbetterthanever.Heisayoungadultaftercamp.HeLOVEDeverymomentofit.
Asanonlychildbeingraisedbyonlyhismother,thiswasanexcellenttimeforAlextobearoundotherboysandmenwhocouldbepositiveinfluencesonhim.Hehadsuchfantasticexperiencesridingandtraininghorses,hiking,andjustlearningtobecomfortablebeinghimselfonhisownawayfromhome.WhenIpickedhimup,hewassohappyandfulloflife—I’veneverseenhimthatway!Sincehisexperienceatcamp,therehavebeenmarkedpositiveeffectsinhisdemeanorandpersonality.Hetalksandsharesmoreabouthisdaysandhisthoughts.He’shadmoreinterestinphysicalactivityandevenjoinedcross-countryathisnewschool.IthinkAlexlearnedthathecanhavemeaningfulbondswithpeoplehemightnothavebeforeevenattemptedfriendshipswith.Ithasbeenaveryvaluableexperience.

John Austin Cheley Foundation Raises Over $86,000 on 2nd Annual Colorado Gives DayColoradoGivesDayisaninitiativeofCommunityFirstFoundationtoincreasephilanthropyinColoradothroughonlinegiving.Coloradoresidentswereaskedto“givewhereyoulive”onTuesday,December6,2011.
Toofferaneasy,efficientgivingexperience,CommunityFirstFoundationencouragedindividualstouseGivingFirst.org,itsonlineresourcetoColoradononprofits.Onthiswebsite,peoplecouldlearnaboutanddonatetoanyofthe928participatingcharities,includingtheJohnAustinCheleyFoundation.*
Tomotivatedonorstogive,FirstBankcontributed$300,000tocreateanIncentiveFundthatboostedthevalueofeachdonation.FirstBank,CommunityFirstFoundation,andtenotherColoradofoundationscoveredthecostoftheprocessingandcreditcardfeesassociatedwithonlinegivingsothateverydollardonatedwentdirectlytotheparticipatingnonprofitorganizations.
In2010,theinauguralColoradoGivesDaydistributed$8.7millionto529nonprofitsacrossthestateofColorado.Morethan52,000individualdonationsweremadeduringColoradoGivesDay2011—anincreaseof150percentoverlastyear’s20,000donations.Those52,000individualsdonated$12.4milliontoColoradononprofitorganizationsonColoradoGivesDay2011.Afteradding$300,000fromtheIncentiveFund,CommunityFirstFoundationdistributed$12.7milliontoColoradononprofitsforColoradoGivesDay2011.
TheJohnAustinCheleyFoundationreceivedover$86,000indonationsonColoradoGivesDay,includingover$2,000fromtheIncentiveFund.Thiswasahugeincreaseoverlastyear’sJACFColoradoGivesDaytotalof$46,000.

JACF Campership: Fourth Summer Pilot Program In2011,theFoundationinitiatedaFourthSummerprogramthatallowscamperswhohavecompletedthreeJACFsummerstoapplyforoneadditionalsummer.AcomponentoftheFourthSummercampershiprequiresthecampertocreateandimplementalong-termleadershipprojectthatdemonstratesthecharacteristicsofinitiative,responsibility,anddependability.FourthSummercampersarerequiredtokeepajournaltorecordallaspectsoftheexperience.Thejournalingallowsthecamperandmentorstobeawareofwhatthecamperhaslearnedfromhis/herserviceproject.
In2011,wehadthreeFourthSummercamperswhocompletedprojectsintheirlocalcommunities.AllisonRadcliffworkedwithaSpecialOlympicsbasketballteamatherlocalhighschool;SierraJohnsoncreatedawebsitetolistlocalvolunteeropportunitiesforfellowhighschoolstudents;andMeaghanKayvolunteeredwithSomeoneCarestoprovideassistancetothehomelesspopulationinhercommunity.

Despiteachallengingeconomicandinvestmentenvironment,theFoundationhadmuchtocelebratefinancially.Annualfundraisingincreased(3.2%)over2010,whichenabledustoincreasethenumberofcampershipsto78.TheBoardofTrusteestookseveralstepstoassurethelong-termsustainabilityofcampershipsbyfullyfundingtothetheCraigI.Colvig,SisCheleyandAnnaBelleKritserendowmentstothe$100,000“EndowedCampership”level.TheFoundationalsodesignated$1.0millionofassetstowardsendowment,thusmakingitarealitythatanadditional10campershipswillbeavailableannually.Allofthismeansthatasoftheendof2011,theFoundationisabletoprovide19campershipsintotalinperpetuity.
2011didprovetobeaverydifficultinvestmentenvironment,asglobalmarketscontinuedtoassesstherapidlychangingperceptionsoftheEuropeandebtcrisisandglobaleconomicgrowthrates.TheJACFInvestmentPortfoliodeclined(1.66%)andunderperformeditsbenchmarks,asitwaspositionedforacontinuedrecoveryofglobalequityvaluationsandnotforthesignificantgainsrealizedinfixedincomesecurities.Aswebegin2012,however,thispositioninghaspaidoffwellandtheportfoliohasappreciatednicelyandgainsexceedbenchmarks.Wecontinuetomonitorourinvestmentsforexcessiveriskandprojectthatourportfoliowillcontinuetoappreciatetogenerateincometoincreasethenumberofcampershipsavailableinfutureyears.
Coreoperationsfor2011showedamodestnetlossfortheyear,aswebothaddedstafftoassistwithdaytodayoperationsinourcomprehensivecampershipawardprocess,andcontractedwithadevelopmentconsultanttohelpusexpandourfundraisingplans.Asweheadclosertoourgoalofsending100deservingkidstoourfiveassociatecamps,wehavebeguntobuildtheinfrastructuretosupportandsustainourgrowth.It’shardtobelievethatoverthelasttwelveyearstheFoundationhasincreasedthenumberofcampershipsawardedbyover450%.
