INH/PC/125 Sep. – Oct., 2017

“In your light we see light, light leading to life”

- INH Vision

“The love of Christ impels us” says St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians. Members of our province and

the SVDs all over the world would have read and reflected this in their unit /district meetings by now as a

preparation for the forth coming chapter. But much before Paul could experience this (being impelled) and

propose this to us, we have a young village girl from an obscure village who was propelled by the wish and

will of God the Father to bear and give birth to His Son. Mary, who probably couldn’t understand the

intensity and implication of this wish by God, did the best thing possible-Just surrender with the words, “I

am the handmaid of the Lord, Let your will be done”.

Persons, who have a greater vision and goal, are willing to forego the immediate needs and comforts. They

do make the necessary sacrifices even to the extent of sacrificing their lives. A young woman after her

marriage is willing to sacrifice her time, health, and many other comforts in order to bring to this earth

another life which is the fruit and blessing of God. She is impelled and propelled by the goal she and her

husband set for themselves. A father of a family is willing to forego his comforts of being at home, eating

his home food, comfort of his wife and security, when he decides to go to a distant place or to a foreign

land. The welfare of his wife and children impel and propel him to make these sacrifices. Great scientists

like APJ Abdul Kalam had even sacrificed marriage to concentrate in their research and in their scientific

advancements. What impels them or what propels them? It is the love of the other more than anything else.

God in his great love was willing to sacrifice His own Son to us. Mary in her great love was willing to go

through the ordeal of bearing and bringing up the child of God. St. Arnold Janssen was willing to let go of

the comforts of a teacher and a diocesan priest to start a mission seminary. What impelled him? The same

love of God and neighbor. As we are gearing up to celebrate the 143rd birthday of our Society, we need to

reexamine ourselves as to what is impelling and propelling us. The love of God, the sacrifice of Christ, the

agony of Mother Mary, the struggle of Fr. Arnold should help us to reorient and reinvent ourselves more

to invest ourselves into the cause of the Kingdom. Let the lives and thoughts of our dear God and saints

help us to get more rooted in the Word and Committed to his Mission.

I wish you a very happy birthday of our Mother Mary and the Society of the Divine Word.

PARISH ACTIVITY

Sts. Peter and Paul feast at Jangaon

The feast of Sts. Peter and Paul which falls on the 29th June was

celebrated on the 8th of July this year as it was a second Saturday and

a convenient day for most of the people who are job-holders in

Jangaon. This year marks the silver jubilee of the Parish Church in

Jangaon. We had a solemn and meaningful celebration beginning

with nine days (novena) of spiritual preparation. Fr. Jerome, a priest

of the Warangal Diocese who presided over the Festival Holy Mass

stressed in his homily, on building a spiritual Christian community

that has to be passed on to next generations. The priests and religious of the neighboring parishes of Jangaon

joined the celebration. We express our appreciation to Fr. Bala Prasad, the Parish Priest.

St. Alphonsa’s Feast at MIG

On 23rd July, 2017 St.Alphonsa’s parish celebrated its annual feast. Most Rev. Chinnabathini Bhagaiah,

bishop of Guntur offered the Holy Mass. Fr.Antony Joseph, the provincial superior along with other priests

from near-by parishes joined the celebration. Four children received the

first Holy Communion and fourteen others received the Holy Sacrament

of Confirmation. Bishop, in his homily, preached about St.Alphonsa's life

and importance of receiving Holy Communion. He also instructed the

faithful about the catholic doctrines on confirmation and communion.

Later on the parishioners had a fellowship meal together. We appreciate

Fr. Satish Kumar and Fr. G. Prakash for their dedication in the pastoral

ministry.

JPIC ACTIVITIES OF THE PROVINCE

DWSSS DONATES EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL TO

HIV INFECTED & PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SCHOOL CHILDREN

24th June, 2017 was indeed a great day of celebration at the

campus of Asha Jyothi. As the academic year begins, DWSSS

thought of doing a simple and a good gesture to the HIV infected

children and the physically challenged ones by distributing ‘Note

books, Stationary items and School bags’. Fr. Felix Roche SVD

gathered all his handicapped children studying under his care and

Fr. Alwin Mascarenhas invited all his home-based care children

for the same. The HIV infected and the physically challenged

children were present in the campus from all over Siddipet, Medak

and Sangareddy districts. There were nearly 120 school-going children who participated in this function.

It all began around 10-30 am with a solemn prayer. Fr. Alwin Mascarenhas SVD, the JPIC Coordinator,

explained the purpose and the need of this get-together. It is to distribute the bundles of note books,

stationary items and the school bags to all the children. Fr. Felix Roche SVD, then, spoke about the

importance of education. There were two beautiful dances performed by Asha Jyothi Children. After the

distribution, Mr. K. Veerababu gave the vote of thanks. At the end of the celebrations, all the children were

invited to have a sumptuous meal which they enjoyed very much. Thanks to DWSSS for the initiative

taken during this academic year.

CONSOLIDATING A STEP FORWARD IN

“LOCAL CONTRIBUTION”

The practicing lawyers from various courts of Chennai, Andhra

Pradesh and Telangana, having studied in the batch of 1987 to 92,

at Sri C. R. Reddy Law College, Eluru have formed a voluntary

group of association to help Asha Jyothi children and have come to

Asha Jyothi for a first hand information. There were more than 27

lawyers from various places who visited Asha Jyothi on 8th July,

2017. The Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Giridhar, was the

brain behind this move and organized a meeting at Asha Jyothi to

meet all the children. Mr. Srinivas, the DIG, Stamps and

Registration of Telangana government was the chief guest and Mr.

Sridhar the Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Taxes was the guest of honour. The meeting began

around 2 ‘O clock in the afternoon. Several people spoke and expressed their views, appreciating the way

these HIV infected orphan children are growing like one excellent family under the leadership and guidance

of the Director and dedicated staff of Asha Jyothi.

They have presented a big refrigerator as well as a LED TV to the children. They have also promised a

washing machine within a few days. They are convinced and

determined to help our children at Asha Jyothi in the days to come.

During the meeting at different intervals Asha Jyothi children

performed five dances. Fr. Alwin thanked their good gesture and

appreciated the move. The chief guest and the guest of honour

spoke in appreciation of Asha Jyothi. The ACP, Mr. Giridhar, was

instrumental in organizing this meeting and many people were

honoured with shawls. We express our gratitude to ACP Giridhar

for his wonderful service.

MEDICAL CAMP FOR THE MIGRANTS

DWSSS organized a free medical health camp on 16th July, 2017 at Mallapur Parish in Hyderabad for the

migrants, in collaboration with the Migration Ministry of the Province and with the kind cooperation of the

JPIC Coordinator. The poor migrants who are mostly domestic servants, factory workers, unskilled

labourers and construction workers are deprived of their basic medical health-care facilities. The Director

of DWSSS said, “We were happy indeed to give medical care and support and through which we extent the

healing ministry of Christ.”

A General medical health camp on one side and an Eye Test wing on the other side of the campus were

held simultaneously. A little more than 250 migrants benefitted by

this camp. Free medicines were distributed for their ailments. 114

eye tests were conducted during the camp and out of which 44

received free spectacles. The others were treated freely for various

eye ailments with ointments and medications. People had shown

keen interest on free medical consultations and returned to their

homes happily with a sense of joy, satisfaction and gratitude. We

thank Fr. Alwin, the director of DWSSS for organising the medical

camp.

Arnold Association (Lay Collaborators or Ex Seminarians of

Andhra Pradesh & Telangana) made a maiden visit to Jyothi

Niketan, Narasaraopet their Alma Mater for the first time after

forming the Association. We could see very well the interest

and enthusiasm of the members as they came in good number,

about 47 altogether. The members from both Telugu States

reached Jyothi Niketan on July 8th, 2017. Some of them

travelled long distance as well, to make it possible. The

members were very warmly welcomed by our Confreres and

Seminarians. The gathering began with lunch and continued with personal sharing of some members as to

how the SVD formation helped them to come up in life and face the challenges in today’s society. After

sharing, the members planted various saplings in the campus as part of the green revolution and eco-friendly

movement. The Association members and Seminarians played friendly basketball and Volleyball matches

in the evening.

In the evening, a Guntur Diocesan priest Fr. Bala Swamy addressed the Arnold Association members. He

emphasized the importance of the lay Catholics and more specially exhorted the Association members to

participate actively in Church activities and more so in the SVD Missions. He emphasized to give

importance primarily to family life and at the same time be part of the Church with interest and deep faith.

After dinner, the seminarians presented a beautiful cultural and

entertainment program. Next day Fr. Ravi, the Rector of Jyothi

Niketan, celebrated Holy Mass for all and in his message,
