What do you do when the temperaturesheat up and the kids are out of school

for the summer? Options abound for ushere in the city by the sea.

Right here, North of Montana, just off the Pacific Coast Highway is a trueSanta Monica treasure, the AnnenbergCommunity Beach House. It’s a great placefor families to take a swim, engage in avariety of beach activities, just bask in thesun or even take in a theatricalmasterwork. With special events tailoredfor kids all season, the Beach House is Santa Monica's summer blockbuster.

The City of Santa Monica's range ofsummer activity offerings doesn't end withthe Beach House. The City's Parks andRecreation department is also keeping kidsbusy this summer with a full slate ofsummer camps to satisfy all interests.

Below is a closer look at what’s going onaround town this summer:

Summer at the Beach HouseSplash into summer as the Annenberg

Community Beach House presents“Summer’s Here.” From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,assemble and fly a kite, create chalk art,romp in a sand mound, go on a Beach House treasure hunt, visit with

Santa Monica Baykeepers and Heal the Bayor test your skills with disc golf, volleyball,beach tennis and ladder ball.

Through Labor Day the Beach Houseoffers daily pool hours, featuring DollarSplash Monday and Monday Fun Dayactivities. This year the “Beach = Culture”series doth not protest too much to presentthe Salty Shakespeare Company in residencythrough July 20, developing and performinga new, shortened version of “Hamlet.”

Surely nothing is rotten in the state ofSanta Monica where there will be dailyopportunities for beach games and a chanceto dodge the sun in the new Sand and Sea recroom from 11 a.m. — 2 p.m. New thissummer, for ages 18 and up, it's Sunset Swimat the pool, every Tuesday evening from 6:30 p.m. — 9:30 p.m.

Summer inspired classes include stand-up paddle-boarding, open ocean swimming,S.E.A. skin diving, semi-private swimlessons (ages 4-11) along with the ever-popular yoga for youth and adults, beachvolleyball and synchronized swimming withthe Aqualillies, the most fun you can havewearing a nose clip.

Beach House grounds will be open dailyfrom 8:30 a.m. — 8:30 p.m. including thecourtyards, view deck, splash pad, play areaand special hours for the Gallery and Guest House.

Camp it upThe City of Santa Monica's summer camps

are enrolling now, until all spaces are filled.The summer 2012 camp sessions will continuethrough Aug. 15. There are 28 full and half-day camps for youth 2-14.

“Each summer Santa Monica’s summercamps open up new doors for our youth,helping them build the foundation for brightfutures. These programs are an importantcomponent of Santa Monica’s Cradle to Career initiative — a holistic, communitybased approach to guiding the successfuldevelopment of our children,” said Julie Rusk,Assistant Director of Community & CulturalServices for the City of Santa Monica.

Santa Monica City Camps offer creativeways for children to explore a variety ofinterests, including music, sports, arts andmore. Want to know what it takes to be in aband? Try the new Rock Santa Monica camp!

Find the fun side of learning throughCamp Santa Monica Discovery, a hands-on,project based experience in engineering,math, mixed media art and water adventureclinics — just to name a few.

There’s also the Santa Monica SportsExperience where participants go beyondgames and tournaments to find the vital linkbetween sports, nutrition, health andsportsmanship.

The benefits of summer camps extend farbeyond just being fun. Recent studies showthat young people who attend day or residentsummer camps for at least one weekdemonstrate significant positive changes inareas including self-esteem and social skills.Camps also help youth meet therecommended levels of physical activity.
