Psalm 119:1-8 Devotions Monday - Blessed are Those Who are Blameless. Psalm 119:1a Psalm 119 begins, “How blessed are those whose way is blameless ” (Psa, 119:1). Remember, “blameless” does not mean “sinless,” for Scripture declares that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). This side of glory, Christian, you will never live a sinlessly perfect day. But you can be blameless by keeping short accounts with the Lord; that is, by confessing your sins as soon as you are aware of them, and not justifying, relabeling, or excusing them (1 John 1:9-2:1). To this you were called, Christian, to “be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life” (Phil. 2:15). Read Jude 1:24 Tuesday - Walk in His Ways. Psalm 119:1, 3 “How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord ... They walk in His ways” (Psa. 119:1, 3). Sound doctrine is absolutely essential to the Christian life, but if our theology does not affect the way that we live, at best we are just good pharisees. Christian, “ walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called” (Eph. 4:1); “you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of Light” (Eph. 5:8). Therefore, “prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (Jam. 1:22). Read Psalm 1 Wednesday - Seek The Lord With All Your Heart. Psalm 119:2 Christian, before God caused you to be born-again (1 Pet. 1:3), “you were dead in your trespasses and sins” (Eph. 2:1), and dead men cannot seek for God (Rom. 3:11). But as surely as Christ shouted, “Lazarus, come forth,” and raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:43-44), in the same way, even when you were dead in transgression, He made you alive, raised you up (Eph. 2:5-6), gave you faith to believe (Eph. 2:8-9), and drew you to Himself by His irresistible grace (John 6:37, 44). Now, in Christ, you are a kingdom-seeker (Mt. 6:33). As it says here in Psalm 119, “How blessed are those ... who seek [the Lord] with all their heart,” for “He is the Rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Heb. 11:6). Read Jeremiah 29:13; Matthew 7:7-8 Thursday - Blessed by Perfect Obedience. Psalm 119:2-3 The psalmist writes, “How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart. They also do no unrighteousness; they walk in His ways” (Psa. 119:2-3). But you say, “If this is the requirement, then I am not blessed, but cursed!” Just as it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them” (Gal. 3:10). Do not despair, Christian, for Christ has not only borne the curse of your imperfect obedience (Gal. 3:13), but He has also secured every spiritual blessing by His sinlessly perfect life. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ ” (Eph. 1:3). Remember, it is only “in Christ” that we experience the blessedness that the psalmist speaks of here. Read Galatians 3:24 Friday - Lord, Help Me to Keep Your Statutes. Psalm 119:5-6 “Oh that my ways may be established to keep Your statutes! Then I shall not be ashamed when I look upon all Your commandments” (Psa. 119:5-6). Here the psalmist prays for divine assistance to keep God’s commandments. Why? Because he knows he is weak! Jesus said, “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5); that is, nothing that will glorify God. Christian, your spirit might be willing to obey God, but your flesh is weak (Mt. 26:41). Do you recognize that about yourself? The frequency with which you pray for God’s help, and keep praying, will be directly proportional to your success in the Christian life. This is one reason why The Bible tells us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:16-18). Read Psalm 50:15; 1 Corinthians 10:12
