Stage Funding On Saturday 25 November Pauline Sangers and Barbara Vernon went to the Co-op’s new Store at Chiswell Green where we were presented with a cheque for £2124 towards renovation of the Village Hall, in addition to chocolates and flowers on the very day we were having a fund-raising quiz which provided us with two more raffle prizes! Although a considerable amount of work has been carried out already the next phase is to build a new stage (as the existing one is nearly 100 years old. .The generous cheque from the Co-op makes a good start to the £27,000 it is estimated we need to raise. It will be a wonderful addition to the Hall and will be available for productions by the ballet, drama and singing groups hiring the Hall.

Julie Stevens was on the PTA at Park Street School and had asked her husband Mike to perform the role of Father Christmas at the school Christmas Fair. He had agreed and bought himself the outfit. On the afternoon of December 24th. Mike had climbed on the roof of his house to adjust the TV aerial as his picture was fuzzy. He suddenly had a brainwave-he would dress as Father Christmas to surprise his two children. He asked Julie to take them out in the car for half an hour, and when they all returned there he was on the roof waving to them, a big sack thrown over his shoulder. The children were absolutely thrilled.

The next year Mike again climbed on his roof and friends brought their children round and of course it became an annual event with word spreading amongst Park Street children. Mike had to keep climbing on the roof as various families arrived. Mike then said he would appear just once at an allocated time and this has happened every year since then.

He had the idea of a rocket representing Father Christmas dashing off on his sleigh. A friend now helps with a full - blown firework display.

Two “snow machines” were also added over the years, one on the roof of the house, the other on the garage.

Mulled wine is served to visitors.

Mike said it costs him about £1000 every year.

Visitors come from far and wide-some of the children from 20 years ago now bringing their own families. This year there were even visitors from Colombia!

Mike’s neighbours have always held a party on Christmas Eve with Father Christmas’s appearance the highlight of the evening, and they would like to reward Mike’s efforts by arranging a just giving page to raise money for Keech Hospice.

Memories of Park Street in World War Two by Joan Scivyer

Prior to the War, gravel extraction had begun

alongside the River Ver in Frogmore. The

excavations were a rectangular shape and

they were then filled with water. On clear

nights the moonlight reflected in the water,

which led German bombers to bomb them

mistaking them for nearby Handley Page

aircraft factory roof lights. Further oil bombs

were dropped in the field where How Wood

estate is now located. There was an anti-

aircraft gun battery and searchlight in the

fields between Park Street Lane and Smug

Oak Lane. This was manned by soldiers

billeted in the Village. Further batteries were

located on the eastern side of the Midland

Railway line adjacent to the aircraft factory

at Colney Street.

Children evacuated from London were

billeted around the village. Some came

from Parliament Hill School and shared St.

Albans Girls Grammar School. The school

was modern at the time and was built to

accommodate 300 pupils. When it came to

School Certificate Exams the local pupils sat

Cambridge University exam papers and the

Parliament Hill pupils took London exam

papers.

When it became obvious that Czechoslovakia

was about to be invaded, many Czech

citizens made their way to England. One

family found lodging with a family in Mount

Drive. The owner of the house asked Mrs

Rudd, who lived in Watling Street near to

Park Street and Frogmore Station if she

would take in a family of a mother, father

and young boy. The family had left their

factory business in Prague.

During the week the parents lived in London

where they had jobs. The son, Charles, stayed

in Park Street and went to school in St Albans

(now known as Verulam School). Mrs Rudd

looked after him and said that Charles did not

like school! However, he must have worked

hard, as after the War Charles Lagus became

an internationally renowned photographer

working with Richard Attenborough. Early

books published by Richard include images

of Charles and his photographs. Charles was

the first cameraman engaged by the BBC to

shoot natural history footage, and he worked

with David Attenborough on his early Zoo

Quest series in 1954.

Charles Lagus (born 1927 in Prague) now lives in Mauritius.

What Have We Done?

We, your Residents Association, the PSRA have:

1. Raised money for local projects through a Boot Fayre in May 2017, and the Well-Being

Day in October 2017 (in 2018 this will be on 14th Oct)

2. Replaced the Christmas lights at How Wood shops, celebrating the event with our annual

switch on which in 2017 was carried out by Hayden Stringer, a Saracens team member.

We had carols performed by the How Wood School Choir and live music from Badje Big

Band.

3. Had the gates to the village repainted in bright white with support from our St Albans

Councillor, Sue Featherstone.

4. Laid a wreath on behalf of the PSRA at the Remembrance Day service.

5. Made our views known on the local and neighbourhood plans and are an active member

of the London Green Belt.

6. Committee members have provided input in the consultations on bus services, The

Abbey Line, traffic and parking in St Albans.

Members are constantly chasing various road issues such as:

8. Litter picking in our local area, with the Park Street Pickers (in association with

Neighbourhood Watch) ridding our area of unsightly rubbish.

We also offer free articles and press to local charities, groups and associations.

As we go to press, two streets are going ahead with the PLAY STREETS INITIATIVE where

residents have agreed to close their road to traffic for a day so there is safe play for everyone. This

is after liaising with local schools.

In 2005 Dave Pooley set up a computer repair shop in his garage, originally called Blue Line. A London furniture

company contacted him to say they already had that name so Blue Light was chosen.

One of the main functions of the shop is computer repairs and there is a no fix-no fee policy. Free home visits can be arranged. Reversing out of driveways and How Wood shops parking bays.

Dear Editor,More people reverse out of their driveways and parking bays than drive out forward. Should an accident occur when backing out due to poor visibility, the driver could be charged with driving without due care, and an accident would have a large impact on the driver’s insurance. It is safer and easier to reverse into a driveway or parking bay and always much safer driving out forward.Peter Bourne

Please Preserve Our Verges!!

Dear Editor,As a long -term resident of Park Street I am really concerned about the state of our grass verges. They are often planted with daffodils and are an attractive sight around the village and lift the spirit. However muddy deep tyre tracks are an eyesore. Should these ‘eyesores’ be tarmacked over and surrendered to our beloved cars? Or should wooden posts or bollards be positioned to prevent parking?. Car ownership has increased since most of our roads were built and more homes added as a result of infill and back garden develop-ment.DCBV

Dear Editor,

Having helped with the litter pick around

the village last weekend. (www.litteraction.

org.uk/park-street-pickers) I am surprised

at how little responsibility some residents

take for picking up litter on the pavement

and area immediately outside their own

homes. If everyone took responsibility for

this area there would be much less litter in

the village. Some people are so inconsider-

ate. Would you empty out your ashtray at

the side

of the road or throw drink cans and bottles

into the street? What is wrong with our cul-

ture that to some people this is quite accept-

able?

Spring Term 2018

It is amazing to reflect that I have been at Park

Street School now for almost a year. It is such

an exciting and vibrant place to be that I’d like

to share some of the things we have been doing

this term.

The year started with a visit from an alien;

Beegu to be precise! The whole school studied

this great book; and from the youngest 3

year old child in Nursery to the oldest child

in year 6, everyone had an enjoyable week of

learning. From drama and role play areas, to

descriptions and creative stories, Beegu fired

the imagination of all learners. We celebrated

our week by opening the school and inviting

our school community in to view the wonderful

work we had been doing.

As a whole school community, we have also

considered our School Values and from

the children crowd sorting, to a parent and

governor survey, to staff Inset and Twilight

sessions everyone has had input into choosing

our new School Values. We shall be launching

our Values in Feel Good Week on the 19th

February and we have asked the children to

suggest ways in which we can celebrate Love,

Joy, Courage and Truth. The ideas have been

creative and range from climbing walls and fire

lighting, to painting and discos. Look at our

website next half term, to see what we decided

to do to at our launch.

We celebrated our success this term and the

highlight for us was finally receiving our PE

and Sport Gold Award. To achieve this we

have had to demonstrate that we are carrying

out high quality PE, offering a wide and varied

range of sports, engaging in school and cross

school competitions and publicising all we do.

The school offers a wealth of experiences and

this term we are lucky enough to have Saracens

working with Y3 and Y4 teaching them to play

Tag Rugby. We continue to encourage daily

fitness and have joined the Daily Mile initiative

which has been running now for almost a year.

We have successful football and netball clubs,

and also enter various school events such as

Sportshall Athletics and Cup Stacking! I know,

it’s true – it really is a sporting event.

Not only are we a sporty school. This week our

school choir performed at the O2 with Young

Voices. The school staff and choir teacher were

so proud of the way the children behaved

and represented the school, and the children

thoroughly enjoyed the chance to perform at

such an amazing venue. They are a real credit

to Park Street C of E Primary School.

I hope you have enjoyed reading about our

half term, as much as I have enjoyed reflecting

upon everything we have done in 2018 already!

many Irish citizens, emigrated to America which is where his cousin Archibald Leech-who we know as Cary Grant-was born.Owen moved to London in May,1986 to work as an accountant, eventually rising to establish his own business.

He bought his house in July 2014 and Owen’s hobby of gardening took root! He hired a digger to completely level the back garden and laid a new lawn and borders, planting hundreds of bulbs and over 1,000 plants every year.

Owen completely redesigned the plot as you can see from the before and after photos below.

Owen very kindly donated his prize to Park Street School for their gardening club as he is very keen to encourage youngsters to share his passion.

Burston’s Gardening TipsMarchMarch is the time of year to start sowing and

growing your own produce. Many edible crops

can be grown in containers so space does not

have to restrict you. Strawberry plants work

very well in hanging baskets as long as they are

fed and watered and lettuce, peas, beans and

brassica can all be started now too. Try growing

Sweet Pea through runner beans to maximise

pollinator attraction.

AprilAs the temperatures rise now is the perfect time

to start feeding those hungry plants. Roses ben-

efit well from an application of top rose and all

beds and borders would respond well to and

slow release granular fertiliser too. Any tall per-

ennials that will need support should have this

in place now to allow the plants to grow through

it. Grow Hoops and Obelisks are ideal for this.

MayBe mindful that late frosts can still occur in ear-

ly May and waiting until the back end of the

month would be advisable for planting out sum-

mer bedding. Keep a close eye on the watering

too as those shrubs and perennials will be start-

ing to put on some significant growth now and

may need some extra water to ensure healthy

blooms. Also make sure you have stock of gas/

charcoal ready for the BBQ season ahead.

JuneAs the day length starts to get to its maximum

so do the weeds! Regular hoeing on dry days

will help keep them at bay. Side shoots on your

tomato plants will need to be pinched out too so

as to ensure a bumper crop. Also spring flowering

shrubs will be ready to be pruned now too.

Removing any spent flowers and thinning out

old and dead wood too to help create an open

framework.

JulyAs summer is now well under way regular dead-

heading of bedding plants and repeat flowering

perennials will ensure your blooms right

through. This is also enhanced by regular

applications of a liquid potash based fertiliser

such as a tomato food. You will need to apply a

nitrogen based lawn fertiliser to your grass now

too, especially if you missed a spring feed.

AugustCheck to see which of your neighbours are

about to water your plants while you may be on

holiday. That is of course if you haven’t installed

a watering system. This is very much the month

for kicking back and relaxing and enjoying your

garden with friends and family with maybe a bit

of watering


St Albans Marquetry Group

The Marquetry Groups in north London hold a bi-annual group competition. Mainly it is a social event to discuss our marquetry techniques .Last year (2017) it was held at Redbridge, and the project was to embellish a photo frame with

marquetry. We were all given identical plain frames to work on and over 40 were exhibited and no two were alike.

The winner was David Gardiner from St Albans with ‘Lest We Forget’, depicting WW1 war emblems.

A clever choice of subject being that most present were of a certain age and the judging was made by those attending!

Marquetry as a hobby uses many talents and skills – some you already have and some we teach you at our classes.

Our work is displayed in various competitions and for demonstration purposes which prompts me to advertise the International Marquetry exhibition to be held at Markyate from 26th May to 2nd June 2018.

Art Group – Park Street Village Hall


BEST RESULT YET IN CAMERA CLUB OF THE YEAR CONTEST 2018.

Each year the highly respected Photography News publication runs a National competition to decide which, in their opinion, is the Camera Club of the Year. This attracts the very highest standard of images from the best clubs around the UK. Park Street Camera Club have always entered and this Winter they had their best result yet. Our selection of six scenic landscape images placed us 12th from 42 clubs with a score only 5 points off the lead.

Thankfully many of our club members are quite well travelled and the most successful of our pictures was of the Grand Canyon by Jeremy Frazer-Mitchell, called “Desert Storm.” This received 19 out of 20 points. This is a very high score indeed bearing in mind it is an event where perhaps only two pictures from an entry of over two hundred receive the maximum score.

In contrast to this dramatic image another successful entry of ours was Terry Day’s. He chose to show his tranquil “Mist and Frost” a photo taken last winter in Shenley.

Your neighbour may need your help but probably won’t want to askThe St Albans Good Neighbour Scheme has been solving this problem for over 35

years. Many of our neighbours live on their own and have nobody to call upon when they need extra help. We provide a phone line which they can ring. We then link

When we last wrote about the Neighbour-hood Plan (NP) we were at that stage where the Sites from the ‘Call for Sites’ exercise had been carried out. The sites were sent off to a professional organisation for as-sessment against the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group’s (NPSG) criteria. The Steering group had some queries over the result and it was sent back for reassessment. We have now had their report back cover-ing all the question we asked.

As a result the NPSG met on 2 November and drew up a list of possible sites for devel-opment. The owners/developers of those sites were invited to meet with the NPSG to add to any information already submit-ted by way of a presentation. All the sites had to conform to the strict criteria and most if not all are within the Green Belt and therefore the prospective developers must show ‘special reasons’ before the sites can be taken out of the Green Belt – that pro-cess is in the hands of the District Council.

We are also in the process of revisiting all the evidence in preparation for writ-ing up the draft plan, ready for examina-tion. It is important to say that any de-velopment that takes place will have had to meet very stringent measures before it is even considered, this is not an exercise in filling any open space with housing. The members of the NPSG are all resi-dents of the Parish and therefore have the best interest of the Parish at heart. They would prefer to see development that the

residents want and need rather than development being imposed upon us by others.

All residents will have the opportunity to have their say when the Plan is sent out at the referendum stage, but we would hope that it is such that you share our views.
