Assembly Instructions

This unit is designed to help you organize the loose leaf

units of this workshop in a 3-ring view-binder. This uni tconsists of front and back covers for your first binder, a

welcome page, a table of contents for the binder, andtables of contents for each of the 5 sections within the

binder. There is another similar unit for a second binderfor when the number of pages that you have outgrows

this first binder.

These instruct ions assume that you are print ing this uniton both sides of the page, just as you should do for all ofthe pages in this workshop. You will need a 3-ring viewinder and a 3-hole punch so that you can insert the pages

into the binder. Also, you wi ll need a set of numbered5-tab dividers to set up the 5 sections of your binder. Thebinder covers provided in this unit look very good when

you use a white binder.

You can assemble this uni t along with the tab dividers bykeeping the pages in their original order and by inserting

he tab dividers in front of the table of contents for each ofthe 5 sections. Then you place your musical uni ts into thebinder as you get them, placing them according to the

contents pages of this unit.

When your f irst binder fills up, you can begin using theBook 2 binder organizer pages in a second binder. You

begin using that binder by moving the pages from Tab 5

section of this binder into the new binder.

Welcome to the MIW Piano Student's Workshop

The workshop includes three series of preparatory lessons designed to help you get startedplaying the piano (or other keyboard) quickly and with a minimum of stress. These lessonswill provide you with enough inst ructional material for several years of study. You will do

your best if you have a good teacher or coach - but if you're on your own, these lessons willstill prov ide enough information to help you get off to a reasonably good s tart.

The first series of lessons, PK Series, (PK for Prep-Keyboard) focuses on the keyboard, asopposed to traditional lessons that focus on learning to read notes. The lessons use

keyboard diagrams and maps literally to show you where to put your fingers on the keyboardto play the music. You will be pleased at how qu ickly you will be able to learn to play songsand other melodies.

The second series of lessons, PC Series, (PC for Prep-Chords), will help you get off to a goodstart playing chords along with the melodies that you play. Finally, the third series of lessons,

PG Series, (PG for Prep-Grand Staff) wil in troduce you to reading standard music notationon the Grand Staff. By the time you reach this point, you will already be playing the piano

with some ease and skil l. This ability wil l greatly help you with the major task of learning toread standard notation.

You probably wonder why we don't start by us ing the standard notation in our fir st series.The answer is very s imple. As it turns out, learning to play the keyboard with a reasonableamount of sk ill is a good bit easier than learning to play from the standard notation. This

notation, wonderful as it is, is an abstract code that bears no visual relationship to what youdo with your fingers on the keyboard. This code takes a great deal of effort and an

agonizingly long time to learn. If you want to become a skilled pianist, you will want to l earnthis notation. BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO START WITH IT!

Several parallels to th is approach come to mind. The first is the way that children learn to readtheir own language. Parents don 't begin a young child's education with books to read. First, the

child must begin learning his spoken languge - both listening and talking. Then, early in thisprocess parents give the child PICTURE books to read. After some sk ill has been gained ininterpreting the pictures, he or she can then begin learning to read the abstract code that we use

for the written language. Clearly, the language skill must come before the reading skil l. You canlearn to play the piano BEFORE you need to learn to read the notation.

Another parallel that comes to mind is in the realm of computers. Not many years ago, i f onewanted to use a computer, he or she had to learn a very complicated computer code. The codesstill exist because they are necessary when talking to a computer. But only a few people need to

know the codes. The rest of us use something called a "Graphical User Interface (GUI)," -generally known as " windows." It has also been known as "point and click." Our key diagrams

and maps are point and cli ck images for the keyboard. Notes are placed on an image of thekeyboard (diagram or map). On the image, you see which key the note is on , you poin t a finger

to that key on the keyboard, and cli ck (play) the matching key.

Assembly Instructions

This unit is designed to provide you with pages for anorderly expansion of your workshop music into a second

3-ring v iew-binder. The unit consists of f ront and backcovers for your second binder, a table of contents for thebinder, and tables of contents for each of the 5 sectionswithin the new binder. The purpose and design of this

binder is just like those of your Book 1 binder except for

the intended contents. If you have used the Book 1binder you may not need these instructions but simplygo about assembling the Book 2 binder as you did the

Book 1 binder.

These instructions assume that you are printing this uniton both sides of the page, just as you should do for all of

the pages in this workshop. You wil l need a 3-ring v iewbinder and a 3-hole punch so that you can insert the

pages into the binder. Also, you will need a set ofnumbered 5-tab dividers to set up the 5 sections of your

new binder.

You can assemble this new unit in the binder along with

the tab dividers by keeping the pages in their or iginalorder and by inserting the tab dividers in front of thetable of contents for each of the 5 sections. Then you put

your musical units into an appropriate binder as you getthem, placing them in an appropriate section the Book 1

or Book 2 binder, based on the unit 's contents.

When your two binders are full, you can get largerbinders or begin more binders using the Book 3, 4, and 5

binder covers found in Unit PSW-30. You could beginusing the Book 3 binder by moving several sections from

Books 1 or 2 into that binder.
