Getting Started using Psychologye-journals

(Powerpoint tutorial)

Logging in

All our electronic library resources need to be accessed through the University of Derby Library pages. Login through UDo or UDOL & then go to the Library site.

This is because we pay for our online resources and you need to show that you are eligible to use them.

Finding a specific journal

• To find a specific electronic journal use the Electronic Journals A-Z.

• Do not use the A-Z to find articles from a range of journals.

• You may also use Library Plus to find a specific journal but the A-Z is more complete

To go to the Electronic Journals A-Z click on Finding Subject Information

Then Electronic Journals A-Z.

(For information – the main links are also under Digital Library and in the Subject Guide for Psychology – select Science then Psychology).

Example of locating a particlular e-journal article:Lidor, R., Ziv, G. & Gershin,T. (2012) Psychological preparation of goalkeepers for the 11m penalty kick in soccer - a review. Sport Psychologist , 26(3), 375-389

Type in the journal title or part of the journal title (not the journal article title) i.e. sport psychologist

The Electronic Journals A-Z is a full list with links to all the Library’s e-journals. Don’t use it as a search for journal articles on a topic

Then click on the link below the title. Sometimes there may be more than 1 link.

Take note of the dates we have available in the A-Z list & note that we will not have access to all years of a journal, especially older years.

Keep on going through the links to get to 2012 vol 26 no. 3

You may need a lot of clicks but you get there in the end

The whole article is usually viewed by a link such as Read Article, Full Text, PDF.

Note you may also search the journal by author / keyword etc. in the search box at the top

Where to look for electronic journal articles on a topic?

There is no one single correct way of searching for journal articles on a topic but for Psychology it is recommended you use either:

•Library Plus (which includes PsycINFO)

Or

•PsycINFO (the largest journal index for Psychology)

Library Plus Includes

•Many of our electronic journals subscriptions

•Full text journals from databases (including PsycARTICLES - the American Psychological Association journals database, Cinahl Plus, Science Full Text select, Expanded Academic)

Library Plus also includes

Lists of journal articles we don’t have immediate access to.

e.g.Journals we don’t subscribe to but listed in e.g. PsycINFO, Web of Science

There are various ways of searching Library Plus. You can search Library Plus directly from the Library page. This is a basic search, but you are then able to refine your search.

e.g. type psychology penalty kicks goalkeepers into the Library Plus search box to do a basic search on the psychology of goalkeepers saving penalties.

You can refine your search by adding more keywords or by doing an Advanced Search. To just see journal articles we have full access to select Limit to Full Text.

A Full Text link will give you the complete journal article

You can also go to the Library Plus search page by selecting Finding Subject Information, then Library Plus.

Click on Library Plus under Quick Links.

There is also a link in the Subject Guide for Psychology (link Finding Subject Information, then Science, then Psychology) or under Digital Library.

If you use Basic Search you can click on Search Options

“Available in Library Collection”limits the search to the Library catalogue & Full Text e-journals.

Full Text: limits search to e-journal articles we have access to. For a journals search, this is the best option to avoid finding publications we don’t have access to. But later on you may need to do a wider literature search.

Advanced Search can give more flexibility & allows you to do a more sophisticated search

You can combine search terms by using the different search boxes.

AND combines the search terms & narrows the search.

Or will search for either term.looks for alternatives e.g. penalt* looks for penalty or penalties

“” searches an exact phrase e.g “penalty kicks”

Think of keywords and be prepared to change them and use alternatives. Do not put in long phrases or essay titles.

Tick this box & you will only see articles we have full access to. If you leave it unticked you will also see journal articles we do not have full access to.

The full text (i.e. whole) of these journal articles will be available to see.

The PDF full text link has displayed the complete journal article

The “Check our e-journals A-Z” is not as direct but should also give access to the full-text of the article. It may require several clicks & links to reach the article

Now click on a full text link

And the journal article is displayed

Saving references in Library Plus

You can save results into a folder in Library Plus.

If you want to save references for future use you can create your own personal account and then Sign In to your personal account.

You can give folders names.

You still need to login through the Library page to start with.

You can save results into a folder. Click on the “+” icon to the right of the article.

You can create your own personal account by Signing in with a personal username & password & this will save any folders for future use. You can give folders names.

Using Library Plus to look for a specific journal article

You can look for a specific journal article when you know the details either using:

•Electronic Journals A-Z (as earlier example)

•Library Plus (but doesn’t include absolutely every journal which is in our A-Z list)

Using Library Plus to find the journal article

Lidor, R., Ziv,G. & Gershin, T. (2012) Psychological preparation of goalkeepers for the 11m penalty kick in soccer – a review. Sport Psychologist, 26 (3), 375-389.

No one correct way but use Advanced Search then:e.g. change 1st field to title & type in a couple of words from the title of the article.

Change 2nd field to Author & type in author’s surname

You could also change a field to SO Journal Title & put in the journal title or words from it

PsycINFOPsycINFO is the largest worldwide journals database. Note that it includes journal articles we do not subscribe to, though you can exclude these by ticking the Full Text box.

You can search PsycINFO separately or as part of Library Plus.

It is searched in a similar way to Library Plus though it does have some additional features such as using psychology terminology for limiting searching and has a thesaurus. You can create folders with references for future use, as with Library Plus.

Access PsycINFO from Finding Subject Information

Then Indexes & Databases

You can also access PsycINFO from the Library guide for Psychology or the Digital Library link.

The Psychology Library Information Guide has quick links & help on finding information. You can bookmark it for quicker access

As in Library Plus, tick the Linked Full Text box to find journal articles we have online access to

PsycINFO is searched in a similar way to Library Plus, but it does have more features. This tutorial does not intend to go into detail.

There are many more options available to help you with your search in PsycINFO. You can select any or none of these

Information on journals databases and other library resources is available from the Psychology Library guide
