CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY Greetings from Chapman University. I trust you’ve started your academic year refreshed and are now ready to refer many wonderful students to check out Chapman! We’ve just completed yet another record-breaking recruitment year by all qualitative and quantitative measures. Our fall 2008 class of 1,260 (960 freshman and 300 transfers) is our strongest ever and was drawn from over 6,300 applications which was our largest applicant pool ever. Admission was offered to 48% of the applicant pool, producing a freshman class featuring a class SAT average of 1830 and class GPA of 3.72. Although our primary mandate is, of course, to attract the best and the brightest, we continue to attempt to hold onto one of Chapman’s historical legacies which is to provide opportunities for students who show promise that may not have fully manifested itself as yet. As such, our staff will continue searching for what our vice chancellor, Mike Pelly, refers to as “well- angled” young people, or those who have more to bring to Chapman’s table than simply high grades and test scores. We’ve added a couple of new (and familiar) faces to the Admission team this year in Shannon Crogan, Janine Forster, and Dena Barker who you’ll meet inside this publication. We’ve also had a significant promotion with Marcela Martinez replacing Mike Pelly as director of admission. Mike, as I alluded to above, is now our boss and oversees the enrollment services division of the University, while Marcela will manage the undergraduate recruitment and admission committee activities for which she has been well-groomed over the past decade. Our faculty and programs continue to gain prominence with the addition of an entire team of scholars doing cutting-edge research in the area of computational physics, and also with the establishment of our new Economic Science Institute, headed by Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Vernon Smith and his team of internationally-known scholars also doing new-age research in the area of experimental economics. Our beautiful residential campus in bucolic Orange continues to evolve with the opening this month of the Lastinger Athletics Complex featuring a new football/soccer/lacrosse stadium, as well as a 50- meter Olympic pool and stadium; athletic department offices; training rooms and smart-technology classrooms. This fantastic complex is truly more than any of us could have ever dreamed we’d have on our campus. Finally, we are extremely excited about the prospect of hosting both the 2009 WACAC and OACAC conferences this coming June and July, so we’ll look forward with great anticipation to the prospect of having you and many of your counterparts here to enjoy yourselves on our campus. So, although I hope to see many of you “on the road” this fall; if not…see you at Chapman in spring or summer 2009! Sincerely, Michael O. CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY

Greetings from Chapman University. I trust you’ve started your academic year refreshed and are now

ready to refer many wonderful students to check out Chapman!

We’ve just completed yet another record-breaking recruitment year by all qualitative and quantitative

measures. Our fall 2008 class of 1,260 (960 freshman and 300 transfers) is our strongest ever and was

drawn from over 6,300 applications which was our largest applicant pool ever. Admission was offered

to 48% of the applicant pool, producing a freshman class featuring a class SAT average of 1830 and

class GPA of 3.72. Although our primary mandate is, of course, to attract the best and the brightest,

we continue to attempt to hold onto one of Chapman’s historical legacies which is to provide

opportunities for students who show promise that may not have fully manifested itself as yet. As

such, our staff will continue searching for what our vice chancellor, Mike Pelly, refers to as “well-

angled” young people, or those who have more to bring to Chapman’s table than simply high grades

and test scores.

We’ve added a couple of new (and familiar) faces to the Admission team this year in Shannon Crogan,

Janine Forster, and Dena Barker who you’ll meet inside this publication. We’ve also had a significant

promotion with Marcela Martinez replacing Mike Pelly as director of admission. Mike, as I alluded to

above, is now our boss and oversees the enrollment services division of the University, while Marcela

will manage the undergraduate recruitment and admission committee activities for which she has been

well-groomed over the past decade.

Our faculty and programs continue to gain prominence with the addition of an entire team of scholars

doing cutting-edge research in the area of computational physics, and also with the establishment of

our new Economic Science Institute, headed by Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Vernon Smith and his team of

internationally-known scholars also doing new-age research in the area of experimental economics.

Our beautiful residential campus in bucolic Orange continues to evolve with the opening this month

of the Lastinger Athletics Complex featuring a new football/soccer/lacrosse stadium, as well as a 50-

meter Olympic pool and stadium; athletic department offices; training rooms and smart-technology

classrooms. This fantastic complex is truly more than any of us could have ever dreamed we’d have

on our campus.

Finally, we are extremely excited about the prospect of hosting both the 2009 WACAC and OACAC

conferences this coming June and July, so we’ll look forward with great anticipation to the prospect of

having you and many of your counterparts here to enjoy yourselves on our campus.

So, although I hope to see many of you “on the road” this fall; if not…see you at Chapman in spring

or summer 2009!

Sincerely,

Michael O. DrummyAssistant Vice Chancellor andChief Admission Officer
