    SOCIAL MEDIA

KIK MESSENGERThis alternative texting servicelet your children chat and swappictures while bypassing your

wireless provider's SMS service. So if you are checking your

    childs normal texting history

for signs of misbehavior, youwill not find any evidence.

    SNAPCHATEvery day, 400 million photos

are shared and then theydisappear, as Snapchat has them

automatically self-destruct inten seconds or less. The

    problem? Apps that let others

capture those supposedlytemporary images and postthem online are now widelyavailable. Snapchat recentlybegan offering a Stories

feature that lets photos survivefor up to 24 hours.

TINDERDating apps like this let you

    scroll through images of other

members and flag the ones youlike. If they also like you, you'reboth notified, and then you can

contact each other. Theproblem? While some servicesrequire users to be 18 or older(Tinder's minimum age is 13),

they never actually verifiesanyone's age. It doesn't get any

    scarier than that.

Civilitycontinues to be our focus this month. You have heard me say numerous

times that how you act is often how your children act. You either model civility

and being kind and courteous, or you do not. If someone cuts you off while you

are hurrying to the grocery store and you start yelling, chances are that when

someone bumps into your student here at school they, too, will start yelling. If

you extend grace, your children will learn to extend grace as well.

This month, Mr. Radcliffe, our PE teacher, is spending time talking with your

students about heart disease. Stress and heart disease are closely linked, and

according towww.medincenet.com,doctors are not sure what the relationship is

between these two. But they have concluded that stress often causes high blood

pressure, more eating and/or eating in an unhealthy manner, less exercise, and

often increased tobacco or alcohol usage. Stress, obviously, is a huge factor in

our health. I mention this today because being civil in our dealings with others

often creates an environment with much less stress. Less stress means better

health. Remember, you set the tone in your household for civility, being kind andconsiderate to one another. As you respond, so will your children. Make it a

week of civility. Below are some things that you can try to bring peace and civility

    to your household:

When things are getting heated due to a disagreement, give a quick

time out. This is not a punishment, but just a time for everyone to take

a deep breath and rethink the situation. It is easy to get frustrated with

our kids. When your frustration is getting out of control, remove

yourself and take some time out to refocus and think things clearly. It is

possible to be firm and remain civil.

When your children are arguing with one another, (and in the continued

days of being snowed in and unable to get out much, this seems to be a

common problem now), provide a new activity for them. They may not

like you for taking the game system away that they are arguing over,

but if you provide them with an alternative, such as playing a game

together, cooking together, reading a book together, or even going

sledding together, temperaments may change. Remember, model

    courteous and kindness.

Have a discussion about civility and what that means. Be INTENTIONAL

about recognizing when your children are being civil to one another.Praise them when they are being kind, polite, and extend grace and

    courtesy to one another.

Read one of the books together that is being listed in the PTSA

newsletter this week. The Norfolk, Virginia public library put together a

list of books that are recommended for tweens and teens. These books

are great discussion starters about the topic of civility.

Feel free to call me if you have any concerns or questions. Ms. Willen

Once again, we are asking for parents to help us emphasize theimportance of good school attendance for academic benefits toyour student. Raymond Park Intermediate Academy is belowthe required percentage needed to be an A School. Ouraverage attendance rate is 95.53%. We must be at 97% orhigher. To help you assess your childs attendance, pleaselook at the questions below:

    1. Has your child missed more than days of school already this year? If

so, they have already exceeded the number that is considered to be

acceptable by the State of Indiana.

    2. Has your child been tardy more than one time this year? School starts at

7:20am. Students who are car riders should arrive by 7:15amfor

    dismissal to classrooms.

    3. Is your child struggling academically at school? If so, attendance every

day at school makes the difference. Research shows that children who

miss school miss tons of learning.

    4. Is your child ready for ISTEP? Teachers are working hard to get

your child ready. Help us help them by ensuring that they are in school

    every day.

    5. Has your child been ill? If your child has had a fever and/or vomiting and

had to miss school, help them stay healthy by emphasizing frequent hand-

washing and good eating habits. Put their cell phones and electronic

games away and emphasize early bed times. These habits will help

    them stay well.

Indiana Statue Law Code #IC 20-33-2-27It is unlawful for a parent to fail to ensure that his/her

child attends school as required under our compulsory

attendance statutes. The State of Indiana has

determined that absences of 5days or more are

    considered to be excessive.

Your child is required to attend school until the date

they reach the age of 18. You are responsible for your

child if they are under 18, and if ever convicted of IC

20-33-2-27, it could result in imprisonment for a term

of 6 months to 4 years and fine of $1,000.00 to $10,000.

The penalty would depend on the offense charged
