The Parish Pump was started in 1979 to pro-vide a free community magazine in the parish. It began as, and still is, a joint venture, com-
bining the church magazine and village magazine. TheParish Pump is sponsored by the Parochial Church Council and Debden ParishCouncil. Both bodies contribute financially to the cost of running the magazine bymeans of a donation, received annually. It is intended that the magazine reflects allaspects of village life within the parish and provides an opportunity for communitymatters to be raised. In addition to the information recorded in the magazine, oursister publication, the Debden Directory provides a host of useful contact numbersfor services ranging from bus times, local plumbers, doctors and restaurants. If youdo not have a copy, please contact a member of the committee.
The magazine has editors but no official reporters. Consequently, an interestingmagazine depends on articles, news, etc. coming from people in the village. The
closing date for submitting material is: the 5th of each month.
The editors job is to edit. This means fitting the material into the space availableand trying to ensure there is a reasonable balance of views on controversialsubjects etc. Consequently, it is not always possible to publish everythingsubmitted and sometimes changes have to be made to the length of a contribution.Non topical articles cannot always be published in the next issue but will appearlater unless you are told otherwise. Contributions of up to 400 words have a betterchance of being published in full than longer ones.
Please note that the present and past editions of the Parish Pump are nowavailable on line on the new website www.debden.org and that any materialsubmitted will be automatically featured on the website. If you wish to have yourname and/or contact details (which must normally accompany any contributions)withheld from the printed edition and/or not to appear on the website, this must bestated at the time of submission. Copy for inclusion in the next edition should beemailed by the 5th of the month to;
[email protected] is also a folder in the shop for submission of written or typed copy.The current editors of the Parish Pump, who have the sole prerogative of theeditorial policy (so dont blame anyone else) are;
Mike Fairchild [email protected] Lyons [email protected]
Advertising rates per issue are; full page 10.00; half page 8.00; quarter page or
less 6.00. Full payment in advance and an electronic copy of the ad should besent to the Editors or Treasurer by email. Cheques should be made payable toThe Parish Pump

EDITORIAL
I recently visited the Fitzwilliam Museum to see an exhibition aboutthe ancient Chinese Han Dynasty. The focus was on the spectaculartombs of the emperors, these tombs consisted of chambers whereeverything that was needed in daily life could be found in thebedroom, dining room, stable and kitchen. Protected by clayguardians and filled with jade and gold, the tombs were symbols ofpower and majesty so much so that unsuspecting living slaves wereoften buried with their dead masters to ensure they were looked after.Security was important and those tradesmen who made the locks for
the tombs were also buried alive just in case they divulged their tradesecrets! The emperors were often buried in suits made of jade; inChinese tradition, jade symbolised the five virtues of humanity:modesty, wisdom, compassion, justice and courage. It was anexhibition about the past yet within its remit allowed people to glimpsesomething of the present.
Christmas is always a time when we look back as well as forward. The past year in Debden has been full of activities the officialopening of the playground, the 30th birthday of the Village Shop, theQueens Jubilee celebrations, the Village fete, our own DebdenOlympics. At the same time we are also looking forward to the
Progressive Supper as well as the opportunity to view a pantomimethat took place 22 years ago. Behind all these special events, are thepeople of Debden who go about the ordinary everyday life of thevillage. To name a few of the many activities: theres the Mums andTots and The Church Mice giving opportunities for mothers andyoung children to socialise; the Village Shop opening for longer andbringing in new and interesting crafts and gifts as well as the basics;the farmers battling against the elements to ensure their crops grow;the weekly coffee morning at the Pentecostal Church creating moreopportunities to meet; the members of the Parish Council working onbehalf of the village; the Friends of Debden School and the Pre-School Committee who raise funds There are also all the people who
give so generously to calls to contribute to fetes and fairs. All thisinvolves people who are unassuming, knowledgeable, showunderstanding, fairness and have the courage of their convictions the five virtues of humanity. I think its something to be proud of.
I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

DEBDEN REMEMBERS
Debden commemorated Remembrance Sunday with
three different ceremonies involving a range of
generations. On the Fridaythe 9th Novemberthe
children in Class 5 of Debden Primary placed named
crosses under the War Memorial by the Village Hall. On Sunday
morning the Eleventh of the Eleventh the traditional
Remembrance Service was held at St Marys Church while in the
afternoon a parade took place led by the band of Woolwich Squadron
Air Training Corps marching from Rook End Lane to the memorial Hall.(Pictures, pages 40, 41.)
Following in the familys footsteps.
As a relatively new member of the BritishLegion, I was pleased and proud to beasked to carry the British Legion Standardat the parade organised by Stewart Luckon Remembrance Sunday. This was avillage first, in my memory at least, with afull Remembrance parade from Rook End
Lane to the Village hall.I was given the leather shoulder strap, thewhite gloves, a beret and, of course, thestandard itself. The beret is very old andmuch worn and, on looking at it closely, Iwas reminded that my grandfather, SidBoatman, was also a standard bearer andprobably wore the very same beret. I amalso told that my uncle, Bill Bentley (my
mothers brother in law) was a standard bearer as was my granddadsbrother, Will Boatman. Quite a family tradition.
It was a moving experience and, as we processed through the village,I could not help but be transported back through the years to the dayswhen the first and second world wars were more recent memories forthose carrying the standard. The fact that so many villagers turned outto see the parade was testament to the fact that we will rememberthose very many brave young men who did not return from war.

Fallen Local Heroes
Those who came to the Remembrance Dayservice in the Church on November 11 will havereceived a booklet containing details of the 32fallen soldiers (WW1 & WW2) listed on the WarMemorial as well as the history of the Memorialitself. This is the result of research carried outby myself and Michael Barton using my Debdendatabase, various websites and the 1914-1919
editions of the Saffron Walden Weekly Newswhich are available at the Archive Point in theLibrary. If you want a copy of the booklet, please contact me at 01799 541806 [email protected].
The booklet is work in progress and we wouldlike to improve it in future years especially bythe centenary of the start of WW1 in 2014.Firstly, we have managed to find photographsof nine of those in the Memorial but we wouldlike more. So, if you have photographs of any ofthem, please let us know so we can includethem in future editions.
Secondly, we do not have full details of all ofthe soldiers. For example:
Which Henry Francis is the Harry Francison the Memorial?
What was John Saunders (Sanders)connection with the village?
How did Douglas Brookes lose his life on7 February 1944?
Answers to these and other questions wouldadd useful information to the booklet. If youhave any information on any of the men on theMemorial please get in touch.

NEWS FROMTHE PARISH CHURCH OF STMARY
Dear Friends,
On the windowsill in front of my desk is a lighted Christmascandelabra a gift from Sweden, which I treasure and enjoy. Thewinter nights are so long and days so short and dark in Sweden, thatlight has a great significance; most windows will sport a Christmascandelabra, or a lamp, from early December until the second part ofJanuary. The lights make homes look warm and cheerful, even if thetemperature is well below freezing, as well as illuminating the paths
and revealing the beauty of the landscape under the night sky. Thelights are both practical and decorative.
Light has a great significance in the Christmas story, too. Shepherdswere dazzled by the bright light of angels in the night sky, wise menwere led to their destination by the bright light of a star and in the darkof a stable Jesus, the one who would call himself the light of theworld, was born. The one who shows us how to live; the one whopromises always to be alongside us no matter how dark or difficult lifegets; the one who wipes the slate clean if we will only ask; the onewho offers us new and eternal life beyond death, the one who bringsus a deep peace and joy. Come and celebrate his birth at one of our
Christmas Services you will find the Church filled with light and youwill find a warm welcome.
This year, may our Christmas lights, whether inside or outside our homes, remind us of the infinitely brighter and morelasting light that is Jesus, the light of theWorld.
Wishing you a very happy and peacefulChristmas and very many blessings in theNew Year,
God bless you all,Hilary

DEBDENLOCALHISTORYRECORDERS
Nearly forty people attended an informative and fascinating talk given byGerald Lucy on the formation, over the last 100 million years, of rocks andfossils in our local area. He described the geology focusing especially on thechalk, London Clay and Red Crag, reminding us of the many working chalkand lime pits that were in the area Saffron Walden, Newport andElsenham. We learnt that Essex was once covered by an ice sheet and thatthe Thames flowed through Harlow and Chelmsford. A young boy in theaudience was delighted and very surprised to find that a couple of stoneshe had found in Debden Green and brought along for identification were infact fossilised whale bones a most unusual find in this area.
To celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee the village organised a number ofevents that proved very popular and a resounding success. Recently VicGunn and I have been scanning and photocopying the archive Minutes of theParish Council going back to 1929. You may be interested in the followingextract from the Minutes of 17th February 1953:
In opening the meeting the Chairman explained that the meeting hadbeen called to consider arrangements to be made for celebrating theforthcoming coronation of H M Queen Elizabeth II... Afterdiscussion the Rev A W Laws proposed, seconded by Mrs Frith thatthe matter be dealt with in three parts i.e.: 1. What the Village requirein the way of Celebrations. 2. How are the celebrations to be paid for.3. Formation of Committee. The Meeting felt that the celebrations wereprimary (sic) for the Children and Old Age Pensioners. Among the
suggestions put forward were the following: that children up to schoolleaving age be presented with cup, mug or other memento.- Sports forchildren and grownups.Fireworks in the evening.- Side shows andFancy Dress Parade That a television set be hired to enablevillagers to view the Celebrations in London on the day. Tea for all.
Mrs Bland hoped that the Committee appointed would concentrate ona few things and do them well.
Some of those children came to our Seniors Tea Party on June 4th. Weknow that there was a Fancy dress Parade as we have been given a numberof photographs, but do you remember being given a commemorative mugand do you still have it? And did you watch the Coronation on the hiredtelevision? Please share your memories of the day with us
I hope to see as many of you as possible at the Social Evening in January.
Best wishes for a Happy Christmas and New Year . Elisabeth Blackie
On the subject of mugs, we still have a small number of unclaimed com-memorative mugs to be given away to village children up to the age of 11in 2012 and to babies born this year. Please get in touch with me as soonas possible. At the end of the year any left over mugs will be sold from theVillage Shop.

Dear Friends,
All of us at the Pentecostal Church take this opportunity to wishyou a very happy Christmas and Gods blessing throughout thecoming new year.
The Christmas events we read about in the Bible are muchconcerned with seeking and finding. The shepherds look for a
baby in a manger as told them by the angels and, led by a star, the wise men seek a King. The Bible speaks clearly that thosewho seek will find and we know that the shepherds and the wisemen found and then worshipped the child they sought. So thisChristmas may we also seek and find that same Jesus who wasborn in a manger 2000 years ago, who died on a cross but wasraised from the dead to live for ever!
We welcome you all to come and enjoy the Christmas seasonwith us, firstly at our carol service, which will be followed byfestive refreshments, and then at our
Christmas morning service.
God bless and Happy Christmas!Simon Gale

DEBDEN CLUBSAND SOCIETIESUPDATE
(This is the first in a series of articles profiling the various sportsand other clubs in the village. Steph Watson and David Rose wonthe final of the Debden Tennis Clubs Mixed Doubles inSeptember)
The tennis club is quite an unusual club. In fact it isntreally a club in the recognised sense of the word. We
have a small committee for administration purposesbut we dont have members. We just have people whomeet regularly in the summer on a Tuesday eveningto play tennis. You do not have to pay a membershipfee but everyone who plays, pays an agreed sum, currently 2 each Tuesday.
The club, such as it is, started in about 1970 when players agreed tomeet on a Tuesday evening to play doubles. The courts had beenbuilt at the instigation of Mr Carter (Thaxted Road) but it was atypically Debden village effort to put in the work to build them. Thecourts are maintained using fees paid by those hiring the courts (thecourts can be hired by anyone for 3 per hour per court for adults;children free) and we should thank Roger Forster for keeping thecourts in good working order. He is a one man band marking lines, sweeping leaves, cutting hedges, replacing and tightening thesurrounding netting etc. Richard and Christine Simmonds have been, for many years, the keepers of the tennis court key. It hangs in theirfront garden at Halcyon, High Street, with a self service booking sheetand honesty box if you want to book a court.
So, in about 1970 we saw the start of what we now refer to as theTuesday evening club night, starting as soon as the evenings werelight enough, usually early May, and going on until the light faded tooearly to make evening tennis worthwhile, which is around the middle
of September. As the club only had male players at the time, the endof season tournament was for mens doubles only.
The Tuesday night tradition continues today except that now ladiesjoin in as well. Although we are not quite at a stage where there areequal numbers of ladies and men, we are getting there. As a result,on a Tuesday night we play a format which allows mixed or men only

or ladies only doubles matches depending on who turns up to play. Each match is four games only in order to keep things moving, givingeveryone who turns up a chance to play as many times as they want.We have two courts in play from 6pm till nightfall with a queue ofresting players chatting on the benches, trying to pick up a few tips(or recognising where they are going wrong) from those on court.
The tennis season is quite short and we have often talked about howmuch better it would be if we had flood lights. If we are lucky, during agood summer we can sometimes play from 6pm until well after 9pmbut this year we found it hard to see, even at the height of summer, much beyond 8:30pm.
The standard of tennis is quite high because the regular players getquite a lot of practice, playing whenever they can during the summermonths and, in some cases, all through the year. If you would like tojoin us, you are most welcome but on a Tuesday club night it is notreally appropriate for absolute beginners to come along. We alsostipulate that only those over the age of 16 join in on a Tuesdayevening from 6pm onwards. If you feel like joining us you will be mostwelcome.

A good readMy background is in English Literature and just over a year ago I gave in torequests by a few friends to set up a book group. It was to be informal and achance for friends to meet for a chat, as well as to discuss novels. I hadheard horror stories of groups where potential new members had been askedto submit a CV or application and a vetting process took place. We are agroup of friends, all mothers of young children, who meet about six times ayear to chat about a given book over a cup of tea or (more likely) a glass ofwine. No vetting process and no disparaging looks or tuts if members turnup to a meeting guiltily clutching a book with the book mark still only a third of
the way through.Ursula has asked me to produce a pre-Christmas list of our favourite andmost enjoyed books. We are a versatile group of people and our reading listhas been eclectic. I am only speaking for myself but the books below arethose I judge to have been the most enjoyed, if not the most literary, we havestudied. They are in no particular order.
The Hand that First Held Mineby Maggie O Farrell: A beautifully written
dual narrative which traces the lives of two young mothers living in
very different times. Inevitably their stories become inextricable
linked. If you liked this youll love The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox
also by Maggie OFarrell.
Me Before Youby Jo Jo Moyes: Chosen for its links with Saffron Walden
where its novelist is a resident, this is a moving story of an unlikely
friendship. A poignant book filled with warmth and humour.
Rules of Civilityby Amor Towles: Katey and Evey decide to spend the
last night of 1937 in a nearly deserted jazz club. When they
encounter the handsome Tinker Grey, with his tailored suit and
sparkling blue eyes, their lives are changed forever.
The Killing FloorLee Child: These copies were given to us as part of the
World Book Night great book give away. We were sceptical but most
of us really enjoyed this action thriller which is the first in the Jack
Reacher series. Quite different from anything else weve read and
soon to be made into a film. This is great to encourage reluctant
boys in their late teens back into reading. The Knowledge of AngelsJill Paton Walsh: A complex historical novel
set on a mysterious island at the time of the Spanish Inquisition.
Three strangers arrive on the island disrupting its peaceful
equilibrium forever. This is the story of Palinor, the attractive,
enchanting atheist and his humanist views. A really thought
provoking novel.

LETTERS
The Helpby Kathryn Stockett: One of the best books of this decade,
inspired by Gone with the Wind, this is the story of the black women
employed to raise the privileged white children in the deep Southern
states and their fight to tell the truth. Unanimously enjoyed by us and
prompted a few to read Gone with the Wind.
The Colour PurpleAlice Walker: The ground breaking epistolary novel
about the hardships of being black and growing up in America at the
beginning of the twentieth Century. We read the novel and then
watched and compared it to the film adaptation.
Never Let Me Goby Kazuo Ishiguro: Thisis a dystopian science fiction
novel . It is a quietly sinister, thought-provoking novel of childhood
experience and the importance of friendship. If you like this then
consider reading Orwells 1984, Huxleys Brave New Worldor Alex
Garlands The Beach.

Dear Editors
It was great to read Davids creative ideas for the Village Pond (Octoberissue). Hes right about children loving fish which got me thinking
How about we fill the pond with fish, sell child size fishing rods in the VillageShop and then charge a nominal fee for fishing in the pond. This would helpthe village in several ways: the men would enjoy stocking the pond; the shopwould have increased profits from the sale of rods; the mums would enjoycooking fresh fish for supper and the fishing fee could be shared between thenew Village Hall Fund and the stocking up of the pond.
Any other ideas?
Yvonne Sauzier
Dear Editors,
We would like to thank the new occupants of Fox Cottage for the considerateway in which they are parking and storing their vehicles, following a recentrequest made at a Parish Council meeting. It really does make such adifference to the safety of crossing what is quite a hazard dog-leg junction. So not only is it welcome to our community but a big thank you.
Thanks too to Gill Lee who volunteered to visit them on behalf of us all.

Since inception in 2008, the Trust has made 23 grants totalling 56,149. Thewide variety of these grants illustrates the value of the Trust to the village.
In spite of this, there is 12,190 left over from the 2011-12 year and, with theallocation of 21,559 for 2012-13, we have 33,749 now available for grants. So, if you are planning a project or have children with educational travelplans, bear in mind this ability of the Searle Trust to provide financial support.
To make the process easier, the Essex Community Foundation, whichadministers the Trust, is now happy to consider applications at any time ofyear rather than only in September and January as before.
Finally, Tom Duncan, having moved from the village, has resigned from theAdvisory Panel. We thank him for his enthusiastic support since thebeginning and welcome, as his replacement, Amelia Armour of Howe Farm.
If you want to discuss an application, please contact a member of the Panelwhose contact details are:

SSE calendars on sale in the Village Shop
Stop Stansted Expansions community calendar is on sale in the villageshop. The calendar, now in its eleventh year and still priced at 6, featuresvillages and beautiful countryside across a region that would be seriouslyharmed if Stansted Airport was allowed to expand beyond current limits. With the debate hotting up about the need for a new UK hub airport, SSEhas restated its commitment to oppose unsustainable airport development.
Proceeds from the calendar continue to be a key source of revenue for itsfighting fund.

Scary night at The Plough
Regular customers at The Plough found themselves rubbing shoulders withDracula, assorted ghosts and ghouls, a zombie, a skeleton and Harry Pottercomplete with scar. The grown-ups were pretty spooky too, sporting masks,scissor-hands, fangs and a clowns outfit. In one corner an eerie orange lightglowed from a panoply of pumpkins. After a busy night of trick and treatingour local pub was the only place to celebrate Halloween Night, hosted byMargaret and Stuart.
Considerable artistry was displayed inthe best pumpkin contest - where wesuspect dads may have lent a hand!

LETTERS
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to you to offer my sincere congratulations to the delightful couplewho run the Plough public house in Debden. My wife and I have lived inThaxted for many years and occasionally stop by and have a drink in thePlough.
We last visited a couple of Thursdays ago around 9.30pm. We werewelcomed by the very kind and friendly publican Stuart. The pub was niceand cosy with a lovely open fire in the beautiful Inglenook area. Despite itbeing quite late in the evening we were able to dine there and chose from avery inventive and creative menu. The food was completely homemade andwonderfully cooked by the landlady Margaret and very reasonably priced.
After our meal we sat at the bar and chatted to them both and werethoroughly entertained of stories when they ran a nightclub in Bradfordrubbing shoulder with the stars or the 50s and 60s Cilla Black, Tom Jonesand Engelbert Humperdinck to name a few.
You are so lucky to have this lovely pub and such charming landlords. You Villagers of Debden should really try and support it more once itsgone, its gone.
Terry and Teresa TibbsThaxted
Dear Editors
Thank you for your encouragement of the Parish Council in the lastmagazine.
There are many issues to be addressed with some urgency so if you areconcerned about dogs fouling the meadow, people engaging in anti socialbehaviour or motor bikes being ridden at speed on green lanes etc., comealong on Wednesday 5th Dec and make your views known.
You may have already said something before but was anything done?Persistence pays when all else fails!
