The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) thanks the farmers and forest landowners who have worked hard with the Watershed Agricultural Council to protect and enhance water quality in the Catskill and Delaware watersheds. This effort has justifiably become a national model that advances the interests of watershed landowners and water consumers alike, while maintaining the highest standards of environmental policy and public health. Through projects like the Pure Catskills Guide, we are hopeful that the partnership to protect water quality can extend to improving the economic viability of the region’s farms, forests, and communities. We congratulate the Watershed Agricultural Council on a successful 20-year watershed protection partnership with DEP.

BUY FRESH. BUY LOCAL.About usPure Catskills is a buy local campaign that promotes farm and food businesses in the Catskills Region. Our goal is to increase support of the local food system. This guide is created in collaboration with farmers and purveyors of fresh food across Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster Counties. When farms thrive, our communities benefit in many ways.

Why buy local food?

IT TASTES BETTER.Food that is grown closer to home is fresher and tastes better.

IT IS BETTER FOR YOU.Fresher food has more nutritional value.

IT CREATES ACCOUNTABILITY.Farmers take responsibility for food that they sell directly to consumers who in turn know and trust the source of their food.

IT SUPPORTS THE LOCAL ECONOMY.Buying from local farmers ensures that rural farming communities survive.

IT PROTECTS THE ENVIRONMENT.Well-managed farms must maintain ecosystems that plants, animals and humans inhabit.

IT PRESERVES THE WORKING LANDSCAPE.The sustainability of farming prevents unwanted and excessive development.

IT IS PART OF OUR CULTURE.Losing our farmers would compromise an essential part of our cultural heritage.

IT IS AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE.This year, our agricultural imports exceeded the value of our exports. A safe food system supports local farmers so that we can feed ourselves for generations to come.

About our logoDeveloped from the 1940s era label of the Walton-Hamden Cauliflower Grower’s Cooperative, the Pure Catskills logo is a celebration of our regional heritage. From the 1920s to the 1940s, local cauliflower was shipped in huge quantities via rail and highway to ready metropolitan markets, making the Catskills synonymous with fine quality produce. The image of the logo exemplifies the long tradition of quality products from a working landscape here in the Catskills Region.

• Pure Catskills is an economic initiative of the Watershed Agricultural Council. The Council is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the economic viability of agriculture and forestry, the protection of water quality, and the conservation of working landscapes through strong local leadership and sustainable public-private partnerships. The Council is funded by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other public, foundation and private sources.

Pure Catskills is a Buy Fresh Buy Local®

Chapter through Food Routes, our national partner

On the cover: Stony Creek FarmsteadPhoto by Tania Barricklo

Welcome to the 2013–2014 Pure Catskills Guide to Farm Fresh Products!

Celebrating its tenth publication, the Guide continues to serve as a reliable source for connecting with the region’s local farm and food producers. Pure Catskills has grown significantly as the interest among our neighbors to buy local foods has continued to rise.

Our community is at the heart of a shift to maintain the working landscape that creates better tasting and healthier foods, supports the local economy, retains an essential aspect of the local culture, and protects the environment. When farms thrive, our communities benefit in many ways.

Throughout the Guide, you will find reference icons for the member products you are seeking. Sidebars highlight food trends and groups of producers including community supported agriculture, pastured livestock and pick-your own operations. If you’re a visitor to the area, flip to the back of the Guide for a calendar for events and a list of tourism activities.

This year, the Guide features eight small farm and food businesses. Each is a vendor in a new pilot project, the Pure Catskills Marketplace, set to launch this summer. Pure Catskills members can use this new tool, an online portal for the sale of products, to connect to consumers beyond the farmstand, retail store and the region’s borders. From beef and pork to fiber, fudge and gelato, The Marketplace allows Pure Catskills fans to indulge in Catskills products, even from afar.

For the most current information on local farms and food, visit www.purecatskills.com for the latest events, extended member listings, additional resources and member profiles.

Please contact me with any questions regarding Pure Catskills at [email protected] or (607) 865-7090.

Thank you for your support of Catskills agriculture!

Our farm is your farm; whether you want organic vegetables, pasture raised meats and eggs, a day camp for your children, or to get away from a hectic life.

Together three families work on the Farmstead to raise two acres of certified organic vegetables, a herd of beef cattle, a flock of Clun Forrest Sheep, heritage breed pigs, laying hens, broilerchickens and a dairy cow or two. We began in 2005 with the intention of raising food for our children - now we grow enough for your children too!

We began hosting overnight guests five years ago - and families love it! We want to share the beautiful landscape of the Western Catskills and delicious food grown with love and intention.

Thirty years ago, we settled our young family on what is now Fieldstone Farm. Today, we spend long summer evenings with the Delaware River rambling in the distance and a growing herd of Black Angus roaming the pastures.

There simply is nowhere more beautiful than Delaware County in the summer. That beauty is in every bite of food from this valley. Raised “the natural way,” Fieldstone Farms Black Angus are happy, healthy, pasture-raised and hormone-free.

30 Pure Catskills Guide 2013-2014

We are a family farm producing wholesome, natural and safe food for our family and our customers. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, in-laws and the children, all play a part at the farm.

We left our international jobs and moved to these beautiful mountains 10 years ago to raise a family, and sustainably and humanely, produce Angus cattle and quickly learned that the first step in sustainable agriculture is to be profitable enough to continue doing it again next year.

To do so, we have diversified into organic poultry, vegetable crops, a strawberry, raspberry and blackberry orchard, a garden center and a farm store.  It’s a lot of work, but the results are good for our family and our customers.

If you smile when you taste one of our sauces, we’ve succeeded. We use old-fashioned ingredients and techniques, so the Slickepott experience is often very nostalgic for people.

Similarly, this region - with the rolling hills, small villages, and tight-knit communities - is kind of like Tolkien’s Shire: you just know that it’s home. We are very blessed to be living and doing business here.

Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is an increasingly popular way to strengthen your connection with a farm in your community. Members of a CSA receive a regular, often weekly, box of vegetables after purchasing a share in the farm each spring. Many farms offer optional add-on shares of local products including fruit, flowers and eggs. Find additional contact information and farm details under their complete farm listing found throughout the Guide.

Ideuma Creek AlpacasIdeuma Creek Alpacas

Living on the land we love, raising gentle, earth-friendly creatures and producing some of the warmest and softest garments known to man is realizing our life-long dream.

We harvest nearly 1,000 pounds of elite, fine alpaca fleece each year and go to great measures creating cherished yarn and garments from our farm. The best quality product is made from the best quality fleece which can only be raised on healthy, well-cared for alpacas.

We love each part of the process of turning our luxurious fleece into soft, warm garments.
