Dear alumni and friends of Iowa Wesleyan College:

Over the last year, several members of the faculty, staff and student body have discussed how to promote Iowa Wesleyan more broadly, particularly in terms of those areas where the College excels. In a variety of discussions and focus groups, one theme emerged as a unique and defining feature of our College. More particularly, the idea of “connections” proved an enduring strand in Iowa Wesleyan’s history. As I have reflected on this idea, I have become increasingly convinced

that our working groups have provided us with an incisive way to think about and to describe the College. Permit me to offer a few examples.

• The most important work we undertake concerns educating our students in the liberal arts and sciences. Indeed, we argue that our majors are stronger because our curriculum program educates students to see the connections among the various fields of knowledge. Their understanding of these connections makes them better problem-solvers, communicators and leaders.

• Iowa Wesleyan College seeks to prepare each student to become a whole person. Thus, our students’ experience of the College is enhanced when we think of our academic, athletic, artistic and residence life programs as connected and mutually supportive of one another. For that reason, we are making significant investments to renovate our residence halls. Similarly, the College’s move to the NCAA’s Division III will tie our academic and athletics programs more closely together. Each of these areas must be connected to advance our students’ educations.

• This sense of connections describes the life and work of our alumni in their communities. In this issue of The Purple and White, you will read about Dr. Thomas Eyler, ’65 and Rep. Kurt Swaim, ’72, both of whom received the Distinguished Alumni Award in May. Both of these individuals have given extraordinary service to their respective communities, greatly improving the lives of those they serve. Both attributed their efforts to their experiences at Iowa Wesleyan, thereby connecting the College to individuals far beyond the immediate boundaries of the campus.

I could recount numerous other examples and know that each of you can do the same.  Nonetheless, with this issue of The Purple and White, I trust that you will find an opportunity to connect with Iowa Wesleyan. As always, if you plan to be near Mount Pleasant, please allow yourself time to visit the campus. I look forward to seeing many of you in the months ahead while travelling around the country to visit alumni and friends. Thank you for your continuing support for Iowa Wesleyan College.

Sincerely,

Jay K. Simmons, Ph.D. President

Message from Iowa Wesleyan College’s President

The Psychiatric-Mental Health nursing class co-hosted a Choices in Recovery program for mental health as a service-learning project. Participants used a virtual hallucination machine which gave a 10-minute DVD simulation of psychotic symptoms/hallucinations, both auditory and visual. “It helps us appreciate our mental well-being and empathize with what people diagnosed with psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia, have to cope with every day of their lives,” said Lisa Garlock Kongable ‘86, assistant professor of nursing.

Iowa Wesleyan College and Muscatine Community College celebrated a 25-year academic partnership this spring with a reception in the MCC Student Center Lounge.

Iowa Wesleyan College initiated specific baccalaureate-completion programs in cooperation with MCC in the fall of 1987, according to Iowa Wesleyan College Associate Vice President of Extended Learning David File. These agreements allowed nontraditional MCC students the opportunity to transfer to Iowa Wesleyan College and complete bachelor’s degrees without leaving the Muscatine area.

These programs were the result of a comprehensive set of cooperative agreements including use of classrooms and instructional support materials, coordinated course scheduling (including shared courses on occasion), transfer course equivalencies and articulation and, more recently, reciprocal course credit agreements.

“Our long and cooperative relationship with Muscatine Community College remains a model of cooperation between public and private institutions,” said File. “Iowa Wesleyan College’s presence on our campus provides a great opportunity for students,” said MCC President Bob Allbee. “For many students, the distance to a four-year college makes it very

difficult for them to continue their education once they graduate from MCC. The ability for them to earn their bachelor’s degree here on our campus breaks down that big barrier to a bachelor’s degree.” In addition to Allbee, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges Chancellor Dr. Don Doucette was also present during a reception noting the silver anniversary of the colleges’ partnership. Iowa Wesleyan College President Dr. Jay Simmons and representatives of the College were also at the college reception.

“Our partnership has provided a mutual benefit for residents of greater southeastern and eastern Iowa in that these programs have achieved successful outcomes for Muscatine Community College, Iowa Wesleyan College and, most importantly, the students whom we have served,” said Dr. Simmons.

Iowa Wesleyan also partners with Southeastern Community College in Burlington, Iowa, to provide degree-completion options.

Iowa Wesleyan College Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Kelly Danaher took students Monica Bowlyow and Brittany Townsend to the state capitol to speak with their representatives about a bill on domestic violence.

As part of the Iowa Coalition against Domestic Violence’s Student Day at the Capitol, students learned about how bills are passed, how to speak to representatives and why the proposed domestic violence bill is important. Bowlyow spoke with Sen. Thomas Courtney and Townsend spoke with Rep. Jerry Kearns.

The bill is intended to make domestic assault laws more inclusive. The law currently applies only to those who are married, were married, lived together in the last year or have children. The bill would make domestic assault, including the protections that come with this distinction, applicable to dating relationships.

Taylor Mali, one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement, was on campus for two days this spring. Mali worked with several English classes, gave a public performance and judged the open mic poetry competition for Word Up, Wesleyan.

Mali studied drama in Oxford with members of The Royal Shakespeare Company. He was one of the original poets to appear on the HBO series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry and was the “Armani-clad villain” of Paul Devlin’s 1997 documentaryfilmSlamNation. His poem “What Teachers Make” has

been viewed over 4 million times on YouTube.

Mali is a vocal advocate of teachers and the nobility of teaching, having spent nine years in the classroom teaching everything from English and history to math and S.A.T. test preparation. He has performed and lectured for teachers all over the world and has recently reached his goal of creating 1,000 new teachers through “poetry, persuasion, and perseverance.”

His performance was supported by the Haselmayer Endowment for the Arts at Iowa Wesleyan College.

Alumna support helps make residence halls “home”

7

campus news |

Joan Gerling x64 never lived in a dorm room at Iowa Wesleyan.

Gerling was married and teaching in the Mediapolis, Iowa, school system when she enrolled in summer sessions at Iowa Wesleyan to complete a bachelor’s degree. She had earned a two-year teaching certificate at Drake University.

It was her experience as a traditional student at Drake that showed her the impact of residence hall life on the student experience.

Now Gerling is stepping up to help current and future Iowa Wesleyan students have a more comfortable and positive residence experience. She has initiated a series of generous donations to be used to make improvements to the Iowa Wesleyan residence halls. And she is encouraging other alumni to join her in the effort.

“Dorm life is so important to the students,” she said. “Students are used to so many of the comforts of home that our residence halls can’t offer right now. There are many things that need to be done and I want to encourage others to also help make these improvements happen.”

As part of a five-year capital improvement project, Sheaffer-Trieschmann and McKibbin Halls both have recently had entrances updated with new paint, new lighting installed in the stairwells and new window coverings installed. S-T also had new tile installed on the side stairwells and upgrades to the public restroom. In McKibbin there is new carpet in the lounge and the hallways. In addition, the carpet in residence hall rooms has been removed and replaced with tile.

Projected costs for the five-year plan top $825,000 per building with the biggest ticket item being the replacement of windows throughout both dorms with energy efficient thermal windows. Other items in the

facilities plan include upgraded emergency lighting, security systems and fire panels. The roofs of both buildings are nearing the end of their life expectancy and replacements will be necessary within the next few years.

S-T Hall was built in 1953, with additional wings added in 1960. It houses approximately 250 students. McKibbin was built in 1966, with space for approximately 200 students.

“Students are going to see and feel very positive changes in the residence halls this year due to Mrs. Gerling’s gift,” said Dr. Linda Buchanan, vice president and dean of student life. “These improvements support our efforts to develop a sense of ownership and community within our two large residence halls.  When students feel pride in where they live, they develop more positive relationships with their fellow floor-mates and have a greater sense of belonging; that leads to a better college experience overall. These generous gifts are improving the life of every single Iowa Wesleyan residential student.”

Joan Gerling x64 with President Jay Simmons

Through his estate plans, Albert Schmidt x38 made an impact that will benefit the College for years to come. Schmidt, who passed away in August 2009, provided for more than $600,000 to be used for the Chapel renovation project. His name is listed as one of the top three donors to the capital campaign that included the extensive renovation to the campus landmark.

Schmidt’s generous bequest is managed by his long-time friend and attorney, John Carty of Winfield, Iowa. Carty served as executor of the estate and as the trustee of the Schmidt Trust. He and his wife, Doris, recently toured the Chapel to see the renovations firsthand.

The bequest also established the endowed Schmidt Chair in Business at Iowa Wesleyan.

Iowa Wesleyan College has been named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutionsthatreflectthevaluesofexemplarycommunity service and achieve meaningful

outcomes in their communities. The selection to the Honor Roll is recognition from the highest levels of the federal government of Iowa Wesleyan’s commitment to service and civic engagement on its campus and in our nation.

I was in the group who fed the pediatric children. They got three pieces of bread, one egg, one glass of porridge. We started to run out so decreased our rations then we ran out with about 10 people who went without food for the day. I felt this was one of the hardest services we have done so far —turning away people without anything to eat.Thatwasveryemotional.Ilearned,firsthand,that not all hands get fed.

—Pam Warner

Today was a really good day working at Kayonza with our health education projects. The children and teachers were well organized and

structured. Also the children were very polite and really cute to work with. I enjoyed playing games and listening to their songs. I’ve been so shocked how happy you can make a child with a song, smile or friendly wave. That has been one of my favorite aspects of Rwandan culture —the children are always happy even though the conditions they live are poor. I will always remember this when I am stressed or having a tough day.

—Christopher Earnest

After a visit to an orphanage: Today at Home of Hope made me realize just how valuable family is. I have always considered family to be the most important thing in my life and today I considered what life would be like without them. I can’t imagine what the children in the orphanage go through and it breaks my heart knowing they don’t have a loving, caring family to go home to.

—Allison Adcock

Part of me is ready to go home but the other half is not ready to leave. I feel like Rwanda is teaching me so many new things and I really enjoy the culture here. There is a sense of community and friendliness here that we don’t have in America and I wish we did. That would be so amazing… to be more helpful and conscious of what others are feeling or doing and take the time to help out instead of being so busy.

—Kayla Hesseltine

Anna Jones ’12 was the first recipient of the Lori M. Wright Senior Women’s Basketball Player Award this spring. The award, established by the Iowa Wesleyan Board of Trustees, will be presented annually to a senior on the College’s women’s basketball team who has exhibited athletic ability, effective leadership skills and academic excellence over the course of her career at Iowa Wesleyan.

Lori Williams Wright ’64, LL.D. ’91 presented the award to Jones with head women’s basketball coach Steve Williamson ’00.

Jones was one of 10 players nationally nominated to the 2012 NAIA All-American Team. Her Iowa Wesleyan basketball jersey will hang in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, TN., as part of its Ring of Honor recognizing All-Americans at all levels, from NCAA Division I to high school All-Americans.

Jones has been named 1st Team All-Conference the last three years. She was Honorable Mention All-American last year. She has also been a member of the Midwest Collegiate Conference All-Academic Team the last three years and has been a member of the

NAIA Academic All-American the last two years. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in exercise science and wellness in May.

Jones concluded one of the most decorated careers in IWC women’s basketball history as the school’s all-time leader in assists (529) and steals (351). She also ranks fourth all-time in scoring (1,518 points) and fifth in school history in rebounds (804). Jones was a four-year letter winner and three-year starter, who posted an 86-38 record in her four years with two MCC regular season and tournament titles and three trips to the NAIA Division II National Tournament.

Jones is only the second player in the history of IWC women’s basketball to be named 1st team NAIA All-American. Jessie Beachey ’10 was named to the elite squad two years ago.

The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) league invited Iowa Wesleyan College to join the conference as an associate member for the sport of football, conditional upon the institution’s successful completion of the NCAA Division III exploratory year in 2012-2013 and acceptance as a provisional member of the NCAA Division III beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year. Iowa Wesleyan accepted the invitation, and will begin playing in the UMAC in 2013.

Iowa Wesleyan is currently a member of the NAIA’s Midwest Collegiate Conference and Mid-States Football Conference. The Tigers will begin competition as a provisional member of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC), an NCAA Division III league, during the 2013-14 academic year, while joining four other SLIAC member schools — Eureka College, Greenville College, MacMurray College and Westminster College (Mo.) — as UMAC associate members for football. Iowa Wesleyan announced its application for membership to the NCAA Division III in October of 2011. “The UMAC is pleased to have Iowa Wesleyan join our league for football,” said Corey Borchardt,

UMAC Commissioner. He continued, “Iowa Wesleyan shares a similar mission and vision and exhibits values that concur with the rest of our league members. We feel the Iowa Wesleyan football program aligns well with our current football members and will be a great fit as our conference continues to develop.” “Iowa Wesleyan is very pleased to be approved for associate membership in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference,” Iowa Wesleyan College President Dr. Jay Simmons said. “We believe that the schools in this conference are the right partners for our institution and our football program. This is an important next step in our commitment to the future of Iowa Wesleyan Tiger athletics.” Following its exploratory year with the NCAA in 2012-2013, Iowa Wesleyan must complete a four-year provisional process before becoming a full NCAA member. As a UMAC associate member during the NCAA provisional phase, the Tigers will be eligible for conference regular season competition and awards, but will not be eligible to compete in the NCAA postseason. Iowa Wesleyan will assume Presentation College’s position as the 10th team on the UMAC schedule beginning in 2013.

Derek Zander ’11 has been named head Tiger baseball coach.

Zander will take over the head post from Steve Less, who served as the team’s interim coach for the 2012 season. Less is leaving the program to be with his parents in Georgia due to a family medical situation. Zander was an assistant coach for the Tigers this past season when IWC finished with a 24-31 overall record, placed fourth in the Midwest Collegiate Conference with a 14-10 record, and advanced to the finals of the MCC Tournament. He assisted with the pitching staff and also was actively involved in recruiting for the program. A native of Colorado Springs, CO, and a 2011 graduate of IWC with a degree in Exercise Science, Zander played for the Tiger baseball team in 2010-11 after transferring to the school from Indian Hills Community College in Centerville. As a starting pitcher he appeared in 28 games, starting 20, and posted an 8-8 career record with a 5.47 earned run average and 64 strikeouts in 110 1/3 innings pitched.

Zander ranks tied for ninth on Iowa Wesleyan’s current all-time list for appearances by a pitcher, and in his two years was a member of a pair of Midwest Collegiate Conference champion teams, including the 2011 team which made it to the NAIA National Tournament.

remember when?in honor of the 40-year reunion class, we’ve pulled photos from the 1972 croaker. now, without running to the bookshelf to pull out your copy of the iowa wesleyan yearbook, can you name any of these classmates from that year? Send us your memories of these people – and those years – at [email protected].

We received four responses to the Remember When photo in the April issue of The Purple and White. Dan wormhoudt x71 provided a complete ID of the photo from the 1969 Croaker.

The photo is of the iwc courier Staff. Seated from right to left: karly byington x72, patt fisher ’72, roberta enger ’69, frank hart ’69, Judy hendrickson x72, Qualey mccutcheon ’72, Sandy massman x72.

Standing right to left: calvin crane ’71, Susan feightner x72, Dave westley ’71, and carol campbell ’71.

Also responding was ed ricci ’69, who wrote, “I was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and my fraternity brother, frank hart ’69, is on the back page with brother David westley ’71. Thanks for the pix, brings back great memories.” harry childs x70 wrote, “The gentleman seated at the head of the table is frank hart ’69.” nancy lively kucera ’70 called to say she recognized the group as the staff of the Courier.
