In August 2013, a wonderful 53-years-young woman and neversmoker named Valerie was diagnosed
with Stage IV NSCLC. She has been living a healthy lifestyle and exploring the world with her loving
husband of 25 years, Ralph. Valerie, her husband, friends, family and medical team were all shocked by
the diagnosis.
Bonnie and the Foundation fast-tracked Valerie’s care to Dr. David Gandara at U.C. Davis where she
began treatment in October.
To keep Valerie’s spirits up at a pedicure one day, Ralph painted his toenails with Valerie’s favorite color:
PURPLE. Since then, the concept and campaign has been embraced by good friends, complete strang-
ers, women, men, kids, entire families and pets including dogs, cats and even a couple of horses! After
contacting OPI, a viral campaign has evolved and a new way to raise money for much-needed lung
cancer research has launched! Who is your Valerie? There’s a new meaning to “being on your toes.” Our
goal is to put OPI’s Purple with a Purpose on the toes of everyone who cares about lung cancer.
