PYP 2015
What is PYP Day?
Pursue Your Passion Day is a day for students and
teachers to be involved in areas that invoke passion
within them.
It is an opportunity to showcase meaningful and au-
thentic learning that we may not always have an op-
portunity to do within the constraints of the regular
timetable and course of the year.
Students have the opportunity to select the tasks, activities and
experiences in which they wish to participate instead of following
their regular timetable.
It is our hope that this day inspires students and helps make
learning at school relevant to your lives. As well, we hope it high-
lights that learning is an on-going process as you see your teach-
ers engaged in activities that drive their passion to learn and we
hope that students see that learning does not always have to look
a certain way to be effective.
The goal is that you not only learn something on this day that you
may not otherwise have experienced, but that you also enjoy the
journey.

How to use this booklet:
This booklet outlines all sessions available to students. Some ses-
sions run full day, some Block 1 & 2 or Block 3 & 4, others are
single block offerings and a few are 45 minute sessions offered
only in the morning. Many sessions are offered more than once.
Each session has a description, how many students may partici-
pate at once, session location and which teacher is offering the
session. As well you will also see that there are sessions offered
by guest speakers and keynote speakers. These individuals are
experts in their field and are excited to share their knowledge
and experiences with students at Central Memorial High School.
Some sessions are very detailed and you will be required to go to
our school website for full details.
CMHS Website: http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b823/
Go through this booklet and select your choices for each block.
Registration will take place on Tuesday, February 17th. Please
ensure that you have alternative sessions in mind for each block,
in case you do not receive your first choice for all sessions.
Feel free to approach teachers about their session offerings and
ask questions in order to determine how best to use your time
on this particular day. Updates will be provided for you as we get
closer to the event.

Keynote Speakers
Central Memorial High School would like to thank our guest
speakers who have graciously volunteered their time to
come and share their personal stories that highlight what it
means to pursue your passion. It is easy enough for us to
tell young people to follow your dreams and pursue your
passion, but in reality, what does this look like? What does
it mean?
Traditionally a keynote speaker would address the entire
school, but because of space constraints and the format of
the day, this is not possible. So instead, Central is fortunate
to have fiour highly successful individuals come and speak
with us throughout the day in the different periods.

Find Your Passion
Carla MacLeod’s career with the Canadian National Women’s Hockey
Team began in 2004 with gold at the Four Nations Cup. In 2005 she
played at her first World Championship, where the Canadian team won
silver. She was part of the Canadian team at the 2006 Winter Olympics
that won gold. After earning a second Olympic title in 2010 she retired
from international hockey. Refusing to lay idle, MacLeod accepted jobs
in public relations with the Royal Bank of Canada and assisting coaching
with Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. Not only is Carla a
pillar of the Canadian National Team’s award-winning history, she is also
a pillar of the community and is passionately involved with many
charities and community organizations.
“I'm no different than anyone else, I didn't eat special Olympian cereal when I
was a kid, I just ate regular cereal like the rest of them. The reality is that if
you find your passion and you're willing to work towards achieving your
passion, you will. And you might not get to the pinnacle, you may not, but the
things you gain along the way are exceptional and that's what the experience
is all about. If I look just at my team, the Olympics are once every 4 years and
you have to be one of 21 players in Canada, as a defenseman, 6 girls make
the team every 4 years as a defenseman so is it hard to make? Absolutely it is,
but in the same breathe somebody's got to do it so why couldn't it be YOU!”

Train Your Mind to Pursue Your Passion
Do you ever find that you have so much on your plate, your mind is racing so
fast, and it feels like you can't focus or accomplish anything? Well, that tells me
you are a normal high school student trying to do their best in a fast-paced
world, getting ready for the work force or post-secondary schooling. If there
was one thing that you could change about yourself to become more productive
and effective in all you do - what one thing would that be? Whatever your
answer is to this question, the place to start is the mind. All of our actions and
habits start as thoughts. If we want to change anything in our life, we need to
start with managing our mind. This workshop will share basic information on
how our mind works and offer some simple tools to get you started on
managing your mind.
