Railee came to the Methuen YMCA as a toddler a two and a half years ago. She loved to zoom on the toddler cars, paint pictures and play jumping games in the gym. When she began the preschool program, she was so excited to do all the writing activities, use the classroom computer and storytelling! Railee loves and learned to read Eric Carle books too! We are so lucky to be are part of the YMCA family. Thank you!

The Merrimack Valley YMCA is proud to partner with our neighbors to work together to strengthen our community. We do this by focusing our efforts on developing youth, improving healthy living for all and fostering social responsibility to create positive and lasting personal and social change – the kind of change that can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. Thank you to the following donors for their support of the Merrimack Valley YMCA’s 2016 Annual Campaign.
My name is Amy and I am an 8th grader at the Parthum School. I was in Cabin 14 at Camp Nokomis this past summer. In this picture I am standing on the left hand side on the top row. While I was nervous about camp at first, I quickly learned to love it. My favorite part was eating in the Dining Hall. I learned how to eat sophisticated by putting my napkin in my lap and keeping my elbows off the table. The food was so good, and I loved the salad bar. At home I eat by myself and at camp I was able to eat with campers from all over the place. I loved free time in the cabin. We had dance parties and nail painting parties. During free time girls from other cabins would come hang out in our cabin. I learned what a Bat Mitzvah is. I had never heard of that before. I taught my cabin mates what a Quinceanera is. My favorite activities were archery and windsurfing. At camp I made many new friends, and I miss it a lot.

In October, as part of the USA Synchro International Club Exchange Program, the Andover/North Andover (ANA) Synchro Team hosted Nautil Club Boucain (NCB), a youth Synchro club from Southern France. The participating members of NCB were matched with an ANA swimmer of the same age and were hosted in their homes. The French swimmers had the opportunity to experience local culture and historical sites around Boston, while practicing with the ANA Synchro Team.
In November, members of the ANA Synchro team visited France, just north of Marseille, in the Provence region. They too, stayed with host families, went to school and Synchro practice with their NCB sisters and explored the local sights and culture.
Brenda Bryan, an ANA Synchro volunteer whose daughter, Gates Bryan, won the USA Synchro “Swimmer of the Month” award for September, was integral in bringing this exchange program to fruition. The young women from France and our girls share a common bond with their love of synchronized swimming, and they learn that despite their cultural differences, they all face the same teen issues as each other. Any ANA swimmer or volunteer student coach who was at least 12 years old could participate.
This program embodies the mission of the YMCA’s Diversity, Inclusion and Global Strategies committee. The group, led by Claudia Soo Hoo, executive director of Camping Services, works to bring various cultural experience from across the globe to our members.
This program also highlights the other side of sport – not the competition, but the building of relationships and community across the world. What an amazing experience!
The Merrimack Valley YMCA is honored to have been chosen as a host site of the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program. We are one of more than 195 Ys across the nation that delivers this health and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals.
This evidence-based program is a free 12-week small group program for adult cancer survivors, family members and caregivers. LIVESTRONG® offers those living with, through and beyond cancer a safe, empowering environment to participate in activities focused on strengthening the whole person.
Participation in LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is often a cancer survivor’s first step in the journey toward recovery.
Participants work with specially trained Y staff to achieve goals such as: • Building muscle mass and strength • Increasing flexibility and endurance • Improving confidence and self-esteem
In addition to physical benefits, the program also focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

The Merrimack Valley YMCA, The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, Andover Youth Services & North Andover Youth and Recreation Services came together to offer a joint youth leadership development program called CORE 4. In June, the CORE 4 participants returned to Camp Nokomis on Bear Island for another great weekend of leadership development activities. It was an amazing opportunity for the teens and the staff that brought them together to discuss issues that are important to kids from all the communities.
The CORE 4 program consists of a three-day program where young leaders from different communities come together for a shared outdoor leadership experience. Each agency selected 15 students from grades 8-10 for a total of 60 teens including an equal number of boys and girls.
During the weekend, the students participated in a number of activities including team building and problem solving, self discovery, leadership workshops and group discussions about issues facing teens, as well as an opportunity to enjoy the full camp experience. Activities also included key-note addresses from Socrates Delacruz, Bert Hammel, and Marilyn Fitzgerald.
The group also developed plans for how they will continue to work together throughout their high school years, utilizing skills learned and continuing dialogue and discussion so that they can have an impact in their agencies and within the Merrimack Valley community.
Despite the obstacles youth and teens face, many retain their idealism, hope, energy and resilience; and are responsive when they recognize an opportunity. Young people in the Merrimack Valley community have the potential to succeed, especially when they associate themselves with trusted youth organizations.

Every day the Y’s impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for a common good. As a 501(3) (c) volunteer-founded, volunteer-led organization the intent is to foster social connectedness, strengthen support networks, and encourage investment in our communities which in turn serves to strengthen the foundations of our community. This is all done at no cost to the neighboring cities and towns thereby lessening the burdens of government.
Membership dues support everyday operations. However, the Merrimack Valley YMCA endeavors to secure grants and conduct annual fundraising campaigns and events necessary to sustain all the financial assistance, charitable services and provide access to people of all income levels. The Merrimack Valley YMCA provides millions of dollars each year in essential services and financial assistance initiatives focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, aligned to the unique and diverse needs of the communities it engages. The Y’s activities have significantly enhanced public access to fitness, health, educational enrichment and numerous other services; especially among children, the disabled, the homeless and the needs associated with an aging community and other at-risk populations.
The Y is and always will be dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities.
“I went to the cancer center for treatment; I came to the
YMCA to heal.”
