FROM THE EDITOR: Roze Kliese is a bundle of energy and she channels that energy by doing many great works for the church community. One of her main passions is her tireless work with the annual San Lorenzo Ruiz celebration at Christ the King Catholic Community. Each year the Filipino community at CTK comes together to celebrate the canonization of their patron saint and they do it in grand style. This year the main celebration (referred to by some as the San Lorenzo Ruiz Festival), will be held on Satur- day, September 28 at CTK. The celebration begins with a nine-day, daily devotion to the saint with a short prayer after morn- ing mass called a “Novena”, then culminates at 4:00 pm mass on Saturday. Before mass, the community gathers at the Community Center for a procession following the image of San Lorenzo Ruiz to the church chapel with everyone dressed in native Filipino costume while singing songs of praise about the life of the saint. After mass everyone moves back to the Comm Ctr at 5:00 for cocktails followed by a Dinner/Dance at 6:00 pm that features native Filipino dancers and music. Oh yeah, and did I mention the FOOD!!! This year’s celebration is already shaping up to be another grand success. The Filipinos at CTK responded quick- ly by having the first celebration in September 2006, donating the proceeds totaling $5,057! The response of the community, including those from other parishes, has been phenome- nal, resulting in consistent substantial dona- tions. Q. How does this celebration benefit CTK both spiri- tually and financially? A. Spiritually, the Filipinos are so proud to have a saint we can call our own to pray to who will listen to the needs and problems in our lives. Financially, by celebrating his anniversary, we are able to fund-raise needed money for our Parish to the tune of $5000 or more each year! Q. What are some of the most enjoyable things we can look forward to? A. The Filipinos at CTK are very pleased that Fr. Ray has allowed us to continue this tradition of showing the community our devotion to San Lorenzo Ruiz. And of course there will be Filipi- no cuisine such as roast pig or “Lechon” (cour- tesy Fr. Ray and other patrons), plus ballroom and line dancing, so be sure to bring your danc- ing shoes! August 2014

SAN LORENZO RUIZ HISTORY:(ca. 1600 – 29 September 1637), also known as Laurentius Ruiz de Manila or San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila, is the first Filipino saint venerated in the Roman Catholic Church; he is thus the protomartyr of the Philippines. He was killed for refusing to leave Japan and renounce his Roman Catholic beliefs during the persecution of Japanese Chris-tians under the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 17th century.

A TIRELESS SPIRITRoze wears many hats: Co-Chair for the San

Lorenzo Ruis celebration, daily Sacristan, monthly breakfast coordinator, Manna Cupboard, Funeral Ministry, Comm Ctr Decorator for Funerals, Wed-dings and Birthdays, plus she volunteers for the CTK annual Auction, Pumpkin Patch, and Simbang Gabi.

I recently managed to catch up to her in between all of this activity and talked with her for a few minutes.

Q. How did this celebration get started at CTK?

A. Years ago when the 20th Anniversary of his canonization was coming up, several religious groups in the Philippines were planning some-thing memorable. Manila Cardinal Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales encouraged all Filipinos, wherever they are, to be loyal to their faith and show to the world their respect to the first Filipi-no saint. How does this celebration benefit CTK both spiri-tually and financially?

A. Spiritually, the Filipinos are so proud to have a saint we can call our own to pray to who will listen to the needs and problems in our lives. Financially, by celebrating his anniversary, we are able to fund-raise needed money for our Parish to the tune of $5000 or more each year!Q. What are some of the most enjoyable things we can look forward to?

A. The Filipinos at CTK are very pleased that Fr. Ray has allowed us to continue this tradition of showing the community our devotion to San Lorenzo Ruiz. And of course there will be Filipi-no cuisine such as roast pig or “Lechon” (cour-tesy Fr. Ray and other patrons), plus ballroom and line dancing, so be sure to bring your danc-ing shoes!

Q. Will you need any volunteers?

A. Eucharistic and Table-Setting Coordinators will be asking parishioners to participate but they will have to attend a practice session that will be held sometime in September before the celebration (date to be scheduled). We will also need help with clean-up at the Comm Ctr after the Dinner/Dance.Q. What do you think the future holds for this cele-bration?

A. As long as I’m alive everyone knows my dedi-cation to this and everyone who works hard to make this fund-raising event a huge success for CTK for years to come!ANECDOTE: A short time after this interview Roze was involved in a serious auto accident and was admitted to hospital. She suffered some broken ribs but is expected to make a full recovery. Friends say the first thing she said when she came out of anes-thesia was that she needed to get back to work on her pet projects at CTK. You just can’t keep a strong spirit down. Please keep Roze in your prayers

We must not forget that true power, at whatever level, is service, which has its luminous summit on the Cross.

With great wisdom Benedict XVI reminded the Church many times that for man, authority is often synonymous

with possession, dominion, success.

For God authority is always synonymous with service, humility, love. It means to enter into Jesus’ logic, who

bends down to wash the feet of the Apostles (cf. Angelus, January 29, 2012), and who says to his disciples: “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them …. it shall not be so among you; in fact, the motto of your assembly, no? ‘it shall not be so among you’; but

whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be rst among you must be

your slave” (Matthew 20:25-27).

BOOK REVIEW BY Jim Guynup

THE ILLUSTRATED A to Z GUIDE TO BIBLE PEOPLE BY CHRISTOPHER D. HUDSONHave you ever when reading the Bible wished you could really get to know some of the bible figures inside and out? Like a 20/20 show would? Avail-able to you now is an easy read handbook that has 180 easy-reading Entries from Aaron to Zipporah... The format is fun and extremely informative, the handbook is very affordable and a bargain at $11.95! In regards to the format you have beauti-fully done illustrations of 180 biblical heroes then the following page has the name of the person and it’s distinction in the bible along with a connecting biblical verse that tells you why we are reading about them. That page progresses on to the “inside story” of each person and then my favorite section either a boxed section labeled Information or Insight which answers what we can learn from that figure or information surrounding the subject that gives you a whole new light that you most likely never have seen.

Now you may be thinking “I don’t need this, I have heard it all”. If that is your feeling than let me ask you some questions that are answered in the book: Who was the world’s first victim to a violent crime? How did Abigail (David’s wife) through discretion and grace keep David from doing something he would regret? What did Abraham learn from telling half truths about his wife? How did Abraham learn the beauty of having Faith in God? Finally: What much disliked biblical figure bones were found in 1990 two miles south of Jerusalem? Hint (he led the movement to kill Jesus). Yes all these questions are answered in the first 52 pages of the 283 pages. So you can surmise how blessed you will be in bibli-cal knowledge when you complete the book

For me it is going to be the ultimate Christmas gift to give to those who thirst to get closer to God and his Son and create a closer bond than you could ever imagine. Readers, these pages contain more drama and enlightenment than any TV show or Twitter entry could ever come close to. There is only one problem with this book: I want more! Hopefully another will be written.
