On Wednesday, September 24th, the Newbury Park, CA local HYPE team hosted a networking event for it’s members. They also invited fellow WellPoint ARG, WOW, to join them for the occasion.
The event included two guest speakers that presented on key developmental topics:
Ann Savanh, Leadership Recruiting Manager Tricks of the trade: Interviewing Do’s and Don’ts
Rodrick McGrew II, Director Database and CRM Managing your professional brand
Both topics were well received and greatly appreciated. The HYPE Newbury Park site leads want to thank guest speakers Ann and Rod for joining them and sharing their vast knowledge with the group. In the future, Newbury Park hopes to have events
with additional speakers to add value for their HYPE team. As with most things, “you get out of it what you put into it” and they want to thank all the members who attended, making it a great success.

What Every Young Professional Should Know... By Lisa Ledford-Crissey, RN | Staff VP, Business Solutions | Clinical Systems & Reporting | Government Business Division
1. Identify a mentor, someone who’s achieved success in your field of interest and network. Put yourself out there, introduce yourself, stand-out from the rest.
2. Be positive. As a young professional, you have a lot to learn and haven’t yet achieved credibility. So don’t complain, instead offer positive, creative feedback.
3. Extend yourself for new challenges, and don’t be afraid to admit you have a lot to learn – but that you have a desire to contribute and learn.
4. Listen, listen, listen – to seasoned leaders and learn something from each. Whether it’s new subject matter or just the tone & inflection of a good speaker – there’s always something to learn!
5. Polish your PowerPoint & SharePoint skills. These are frequently used tools that come in really handy in leading projects.
6. Focus on your work – when at work. Young professionals typically have a lot going on in life, so it’s important to be focused at work.
7. Be on time, every time and come prepared. Don’t walk into meetings late or dial into conference calls late.
8. Follow up when something is assigned to you, and complete your tasks on time.

Career Corn Are You Under-Qualified for That Job? By Richard Hom, OD, MPA
Each year, hundreds of newly-minted graduates flood the country side of
America like so many monarch butterflies in San Juan Capistrano; each one earnestly
looking for a job. For many applicants the task will be easy. For others, the task is less
certain and potentially more frustrating.
Beleaguering every applicant is the job description. It is replete with
responsibilities, duties, skills and desired or required experience. Customarily, the
description is either a human resources exercise in due diligence or a misguided or
even misperceived notion by the hiring manager. It is an obstacle to applicants
because few actually match completely with each and every single requirement.
Job experts agree that the resume and curriculum vitae capture on a fragment
of an applicant. It doesn't tell how the applicant can relate their own skill and
experience to synthesize results in the new job. It doesn't tell how much they can be a
team player. And finally, it doesn't tell how the applicant can solve the hiring doctor or
manager's considerable uneasiness of the business problem or task to be solved. If
these are questions that are not evident in the usual resume, might these be the
strategies for job applicants to pursue with any new employer?
Clearly, yes, It is the objective of any job seeker to create a concise story of how
they can create the solution to the business problem or object of the hiring doctor or
manager. Absent these key strategies, an applicant's background and skill are
insufficient by itself to distinguish their application from another.
The resume or curriculum vitae is just a starting point. It should not be written
perfunctorily. It should not be done hastily. Rather, it should be handcrafted for each
job description. It should reflect the relative importance of skill and experience. They
are not equally weighted with skill often more valued than experience. Lastly, the
resume/curriculum vitae should emphasize how to fit in, culturally within the
organization.
In summary, a lack of experience or even skill should not deter any applicant, For
