The Grass Valley Charter School in northern California teaches 500 studentsfrom kindergarten to eighth grade using principles from Outward Bound andother“active learning”methods.Recently theschoolhasbeen in thenewsnotbecause of its pedagogy, but due to the effects of an unusual eruption ofunreality.

OnMay 11, 2019, the school was scheduled to hold its BlueMarble Jubileeannual fundraiser. Howisthisconspiracytheorydifferentfromotherconspiracytheories?

QAnon is a big tent conspiracy theory, a meta narrative that knits togethercontemporary politics and hoary racist tropeswith centuries of history behindthem. At its core is the idea that all American presidents between John F.KennedyandDonaldTrumphavebeenworkingwithacabalofglobalistelitescalled “TheCabal” to undermineAmerican democracy and forward their ownnefariousagenda.(Predictably,thecabalincludesinvestor/philanthropistGeorgeSorosandtheRothschildfamily,butthetheoryismoreanti-elitethanexplicitlyanti-Semitic.)Inallversionsofthemythos,theCabalseekstodestroyAmericanfreedomandsubjugate thenation to thewillsofaworldgovernment. In someversions of the mythos, the agenda also includes pedophilia, blood sacrifice,Satanismandotherattention-gettingtransgressions.

Ultimately, QAnon is a hopeful conspiracy theory. “The Storm” is coming.Donald Trump is secretly working in league with Robert Mueller to arrestHillaryClinton,BarackObama, andothermembersof theDeepStatewhoareworkingtodestroyournation.Sealedindictmentshavealreadybeenfiled, andarrests—followed bymilitary trials, and possibly executions—are coming anydaynow.

Inmanyways,QAnon behaves thewaymost conspiracy theories do. Its coreappealisitssenseofamasternarrative,anexplanationforotherwisedisturbingandconfusingeventsthatassuresbelieversthattheyunderstandthebigpictureinwaysnon-believers donot.Thismaster narrativegives believers a senseofcontrol over uncontrollable events. QAnon followers continually remind eachotherto“trusttheplan,”thatTrumpandhisteamhavereasonsforthestepstheyare taking, including their decision to reveal their plans only through theInternet’sshadiestmessageboards.

¶ QAnon is just a part of a broader “Great Awakening.” From theGreatAwakeningMap(greatawakeningmap.co).

Likeallsuccessfulconspiracytheories,QAnonisself-sealing.Anyobjectionordisproof can be turned into support for the theory, usually by explaining thatinformation is being withheld to prevent the panic of an unprepared andpotentiallyhystericalpublic.Thusevents thatwouldseem todoom the theory, like the end of theMueller investigation, are turned into evidence that thosebehindtheconspiracy—Trumpandhisallies, includingtheauthoroftheQdrops—arecleverbeyondourunderstanding.

Cass Sunstein understands conspiracies as the product of “crippledepistemologies,” which accept only a limited set of sources as authoritative. Here,DonaldTrump’s relentlessattackson themainstreammediahavehelpedconstrain the range of sources QAnon supporters are willing to believe, dismissing virtually any conventional journalistic authorities as part of theglobalisteliteresponsibleforallsocietalills.TheauthoritativevoicesinQAnonarethosemostdedicatedtounderstandingQ’smissives.

ButQAnondepartsfromthepatternofconventionalconspiracytheoriesinsomenovel ways. Traditionally, the audience for conspiracy theories are those whofeel marginalized from ordinary politics and are disengaged. Now the most

Sincetaking office he has relentlessly attacked mainstream media, which is a coreactorinQAnon’sunreality, andhisvolubleconflictswithgovernmentagencieslike theFBI gives apparent support to the idea that he is atwarwith a “deepstate”determinedtounseathim.

Furthermore, Trump frequently amplifies conspiracy theorists, includingprominent QAnon believers, especially through his Twitter feed. A generousreading of this behavior is that Trump is amplifying anyone who vocallysupportshispolicies, someofwhomhappentobeconspiracytheorists.Anotherinterpretation, offered by Dr. Joseph Uscinski, is that Trump saw conspiracytheoristsasan“underservedmarket”duringtheprimariesforthe2016electionandthatTrumpcontinues“dancingwiththeonewhobroughthimtotheprom.”MoredisturbingisthepossibilitythatTrumpgenuinelyseeshimselfasavictimofforcesbeyondhiscontrolandthechiefactorinabattleforthesoulandfutureof a nation. Trump’s apparent alignment with some of QAnon’s ideas isn’t the onlydistinguishingfeatureofthisconspiracy.QAnonmaybethefirstconspiracytohavefullyembracedtheparticipatorynatureofthecontemporaryinternet.

The core texts of the QAnon movement are a set of more than 3,000 briefmessagespostedon Internetmessageboards4chanand8chan.Thesemessageboards are anonymous, chaotic and ephemeral, all characteristics that wouldseem tomitigateagainst thebroad transmissionof thesemissives.Whywould“QClearancePatriot”(thepersonorpersonswhoclaimproximitytoTrumpandwho have detailed understanding of the conspiracy) share valuable insights insuchanunlikelyvenue?Anonymity,ofcourse,aswellasabeliefthattheopen-minded denizens of those fora would be readers capable of assembling the“crumbs”droppedbyQ.(Q:#6)

Theother reason, ofcourse, is that theprocessofdecipheringand interpretingthesevaguecluesisahellofalotmoreinterestingthanreadingtherantingsofaparanoid mind. Author Walter Kirn identifies Q as a storyteller who hasmastered a fundamental truth of narrative on the internet: “The audience forinternet narratives doesn’t want to read, it wants to write. It doesn’t wantanswersprovided, itwants to search for them.”Membersof theQAnonaren’tjust readers of Q’s “drops”—they are the “bakers,” assembling crumbs intocoherentnarrativesandpredictions.Andwhileassemblingandre-bakingcrumbsis unlikely to yield anything culinarily appealing, participation in constructingtheQnarrativeisclearlyafascinatingpursuitforthousandsofco-creators.

The “baking” of Q’s crumbs has led to a complex ecosystem that almostresembles Talmudic commentary, with some “researchers” competing tointerpretQ’spronouncementsandtiethemtobreakingeventsinthenews.Otherresearchers are numerologists, linking the “tripcodes” used in Q’s posts(tripcodes are a weak form of cryptographic signature designed to allowanonymousposters to linkauthorshipofmultipleposts) to thousandsofbooksindexedbyGoogleBooks.Q’sdevoteesare incrediblyprolific. The leadingQpodcasts have published thousands of episodes, and the thousands of videosexplaining QAnon routinely register hundreds of thousands of views onYouTube.

Most commentary on the QAnon phenomenon is so quick to denounce theabsurdity of the community’s obsessions that it fails to consider what’sinteresting and novel about themovement.A laudable exception are the threeauthorsbehindQAnonAnonymous,aPatreon-supportedpodcastthat“chops&screws thebest conspiracy theories of thepost-truth era.”QAnonAnonymous

What is perhaps mostremarkable about QAnon is how resilient it has been to obvious setbacks, includingtheinconvenienttruththatneitherHillaryClintonnorBarackObamahavebeenarrested.

The QAnon Anonymous team considers QAnon to be “an improvisationalgame” where the players compete, “looking for an interpretation that will goviralwithintheQAnoncommunity.”Asaresult,QAnonbakersarenotonlyco-authors of the narrative, they’re proselytisers, both for the broader conspiracyand their particular interpretive frame. We see the same dynamics in antivax,anotherconspiracythat’shavingamomentinthesunwiththereturnofmeaslesoutbreaksintheUS.ItisinsufficienttobepersuadedbytheantivaxorQAnonmovements—thosewho’vejoinedthemovementfeelanobligationtosharethetruthwiththosewho’veyettobeenlightened.Thosewhoaremostsuccessfulinconverting others are rewarded with attention, a commodity that is easilyconvertible intoother currencies.Mostof thepopularQAnonpodcasts featuresponsoredadvertising, notablyproducts like emergency flashlightsdesigned tohelp listeners survive the social upheavals destined to come about duringTheStorm.(Thereis,ofcourse,theinevitablebacklashtothecommercializationofQAnon,withdisaffectedmovementparticipantscomplainingthattheconspiracyhasbeenhijackedandisnowbeingexploitedforfinancialgains.)

ThefieldofCivicMediaunderstandsparticipationinthisprocessasakeyformof civic participation. Much of this participation is laudable, and a positivedevelopment for making marginalized issues more visible. The use ofparticipatory civicmediawashow reports of sexual harassment inHollywoodturned into the #metoo movement, with tens of thousands of women joiningAlyssaMilano in portraying the sheer volume of womenwho had personallybeen harassed or abused. In the Black Lives Matter movement, participatorymedia was critical in documenting police violence against protesters, indemandingattentiontoprotestsandthereasonsbehindthem, andinframingtheissue of police violence against people of color as narrative of civil rightsviolationthatlinkstogetherindividualactsofviolence.Theemergenceofspaceswhere non-professional individuals can report what’s happening in theircommunities, amplify stories that might have otherwise been missed, anddemand attention towards subaltern narratives is, in the main, an enormouslypositivedevelopmentforopensocieties.

¶TheUnreal:Whatdoesyourrealitylooklike?(LEGO’s“TheUpsideDown”fromtheNetflixshow“StrangerThings.”)

Throughout QAnon is the idea of discovering that our consensus reality isfraudulent, that a darker but truer reality lurks beneath the surface for thosebrave enough to look for it. QAnons talk about “red pills” and “blue pills,”adopting the terms from everyone’s favorite mashup of Keanu Reeves andPlato’sCave,the1999filmTheMatrix.Inthefilm,Reeves’scharacterisofferedaredpill,whichwillrevealtohimthetrueandhorrifyingnatureofreality,orabluepill,whichwillallowhimtoremaininhappydelusion.ForQAnonswho’vetakentheredpill,theworldofMSMisunreal,designedtodeceiveandpreventusfromseeingthetruth.Forthosewhodon’ttakethepill,thoseinQAnonaresimplydelusional, incapableofbeing reached, and residing in anunrealitywehavenowayofinfluencingoraffecting.

Political consensus becomes more elusive, becausefindingacommonsolutionrequiresacceptingacommon—oratleastcompatible—analysisof the situation.Reporting thenews is increasingly complicated, asreporters trained to act as neutral conduits are obliged to advocate for theirperspective above competing perspectives, a process that may further erode
