Born in 1900, Samuel Cohen's home town was NewYork, where as a young man he rose to the position ofAssistant Director of the Beth Israel Hospital. In 1933,he accepted an offer to become the Superintendent of theyet unopened Jewish General Hospital. He took a leadingrole in the hospital's formative period, when he directedthe first hirings and ensured the establishment of theJewish General on a firm, scientific foundation. SamuelCohen continued as Superintendent of the hospitalthrough the tribulations of the Depression and theSecond World War, and then through the period of thehospital's greatest growth, all the while insisting on thedevelopment and maintenance of high standards andpromoting the hospital's rapidly improving reputation.Mr. Cohen retired from his position of administrativeleadership on December 31, 1967, but since then he hascontinued his close ties with the Jewish General Hospital,both as a friend and source of advice.

Dr. Slatkoff, a native Montrealer, received hiseducation at the Montreal High School and McGillUniversity. He obtained degrees in Arts and Medicine,and then in 1934 began to practise at the MontrealGeneral Hospital. During the Second World War, he roseto the important administrative post of AssistantSuperintendent (Medical), and held that position until1950, when he accepted an invitation to serve in theMaimonides Hospital of New York. Three years later,Allan Bronfman, eager to improve the stature of theJewish General Hospital, arranged the creation of theposition of Medical Director and convinced Dr. Slatkoffto assume the post. In his new capacity as MedicalDirector, Dr. Slatkoff held responsibility for coordinatingthe hospital's medical activities, including mattersconcerned with the interns and residents, appointmentdetails and the continuing education of attending staff,and the general supervision of the hospital's medicaldepartments. Shortly after his arrival, he played asignificant role in the establishment of full-timegeographic medicine at the Jewish General Hospital,which involved the appointment of Dr. Martin Hoffmanas Head of the Department of Medicine. On January 1,1968, Dr. Slatkoff succeeded Mr. Cohen as ExecutiveDirector. He continued at the helm of the Jewish Generaluntil September 1, 1975, since which time he has servedthe hospital in an advisory capacity. He is now a leadingfigure in the Canadian Human Rights Foundation andthe Senior Citizens' Forum, and is active in otherorganizations of public interest.

Archie Deskin was born in Montreal in 1926 and at-tended Baron Byng High School, from which hematriculated in 1944. After gaining some practical ex-perience, he resumed his formal education in 1953, whenhe began studies in the evening division of Sir GeorgeWilliams University. After receiving his B.A. in 1957, heenrolled in the Institut Superieur d' AdministrationHospitaliere of the Universite de Montreal, whichgranted him his Master's Degree in Hospital Ad-ministration in 1960. In 1953, Mr. Deskin was appointedAssistant Executive Director of the Montreal HebrewOld Peoples Home. Two years later he was promoted toAssociate Director and in 1957 became the ExecutiveDirector of that institution. In 1959, in order to completehis university field placement, part of his Master'sprogram, he became Administrative Resident at theJewish General Hospital. His residency over, he receivedan appointment as Assistant Director of the JewishGeneral and in 1971 was named Associate ExecutiveDirector. He has held the position of Executive Directorsince 1975.

Alexander Wright, who was born at Calgary in 1958, attended Shawnigan Lake Boys'School near Duncan, B.C., and then studied at McGill University in Montreal. He thereobtained his B.A. (Honours) and M.A. in Canadian history. Mr. Wright is now living inMontreal and pursuing research for his doctoral thesis which deals with economic andpolitical activities of seigneurs in the District of Montreal during the first decades of thenineteenth century. For two summers, he operated the Sandon Historical Museum atSandon, B.C. Alexander Wright has also worked as a teaching assistant at McGillUniversity.
