Headteacher’s Update

QE NEWS July 2018

Delivering Academic Excellence

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Queen Elizabeth’s School

Once again our newsletter which marks the end of the school year is full of amazing stories of both

current and former students. One of the joys of working at QE is that our students never fail to amaze

and surprise us with their incredible enthusiasm, love of life, love of learning and deep commitment to

their school.

This edition is full of stories of character, effort, determination, resilience and endeavour in a whole

range of activities which captures the very essence of Queen Elizabeth’ School. It is why we started the

year with a Good judgement from OFSTED and ended it with an Outstanding judgement from the

Church Inspectors who said, “Staff, students and parents talk about QE School being an inclusive,

happy and safe school where everyone is friendly and accepting of difference. Pupils place high value

on the friendships they have formed at QE School. The student leadership team appreciate the

opportunities they have and they, themselves, reflect back the values of the staff leadership team. One

student said that it was a pleasure to represent her school. The clear vision based on hope drives the

school community.”

The newsletter sums up everything that the QE Family hold in high regard; Leadership, participation,

effort, life beyond lessons, success, overcoming barriers and a life that is student-centred with a whole

array of opportunities if young people decide to engage.

I am already looing forward to another tremendous year in September when we welcome another 400

students to our family. We can’t wait to see them surprise and amaze us with their talents and we will

do our best to enable them to flourish.

In the meantime all of us at QE wish you and happy and safe summer break and see you on results

day!

Best wishes

Rock Challenge Success

On Friday 27th April the QE Rock Challenge ‘Play Dead’ company headed off to Portsmouth Guildhall to take part in the Rock Challenge Southern Final.

We arrived at Portsmouth Guildhall at 9am in time to watch other finalists rehearse. We were all amazed at the quality and high standard that was shown, every cast had upped their game since the regional events and some of our students nervously said ‘they’re so good’ or ‘look at their set, we don’t have that’. However...

During our 30 minute rehearsal slot our students showed just why they had made it to the final. They were professional, energised and confident. The other schools in the auditorium watched open mouthed and as the piece ended there was silence followed by a huge cheer.

The evening competition was tense. With costumes and lighting all the pieces looked even more impressive. We were hoping we could at least get placed in the top 5 of the 11 schools but knew it would be tough.

The results came through. Of the 15 categories of awards we were given 11 including:-

Excellence in Choreography

Excellence in concept originality

Excellence in entertainment

Excellence in lighting design

Excellence in video performance

Excellence in performance skills

Excellence in stage use

Excellence in drama skills

Excellence in sound track

Student leadership

And the all important Performers Choice award.

Then came the top five places... we already felt like winners with 11 awards and the fact we had made it to the final, so when we heard ‘Queen Elizabeth’s’ called out for Second place every one of our performers and crew (and staff!) erupted into screams and the song of ‘Who are, who are we, we are team QE’!

The first place school was impressive but after looking at our judging sheets we could only have been a couple of points behind them.

Our Year 13 Dancers played a huge part in the whole process and were thrilled with the result.

It’s the highest QE have every made it in Rock Challenge and the 54 students involved as performers and crew were a real asset to QE. They were confidently led by Year 13 dancers Will Burry, Emily Pitcher and Elly Willingham.

Many thanks to the parents that travelled over to support the performers and a huge congratulations to the whole team involved. We’re already starting to make plans for next year’s piece!

High Performance Summer Event

On June 21st we held our High Performance Summer Celebration. We were fortunate to have wonderful weather

and some refreshments and biscuits provided by the catering team to celebrate the achievements of our Year 9, 10

and 12 students. Our Team QE led the guests to their seats and helped them collect their drinks and biscuits. Our

new Deputy Head Girl, Asha Ambasna led her team admirably to ensure that all guests were adequately seated and

refreshed in the sunny weather.

For this event the Faculty Representatives for High Performance gathered names from their Faculties for students in

these year groups who had achieved highly, worked hard and produced great results this Academic Year. Faculties

were advised to choose a boy and a girl for each subject from each year group, and there was hot competition for

the top spots! The representatives also attended the event to help celebrate with their students.

The students that were chosen were not all from the High Performance Register, as other students have worked

equally hard and deserve recognition for their achievements also. Some students were nominated by multiple

Faculties, including: Alison Gould in Year 9 for History, Science, Maths and English, Matthew Parslow (second year in

a row as a multiple award winner) in Year 10 for Music, RE, Chemistry, Maths and French, Martha Tribe (second year

in a row as a multiple award winner) in Year 10 for RE, Geography, Triple Science, Maths, French and English. Many

of our Year 12 students collected awards for two of their three curriculum subjects, including: Helena Gifford for Art

and English, Tom Sinkinson for History and Film Studies, Zoe Gautshy for History and French and Ben Weeks for

Psychology and Biology. There were many more multiple award winners, as well as those winning in individual sub-

ject areas.

Students, staff and parents enjoyed a wonderful afternoon celebrating the success of our students in the sunshine.

Awards were handed out by our Vice Chair of Governors, Jane Mursell.

Paris Trip

Paris trip 2018 by Tristan Webster

Last week, Mrs Mason took 40 Year 10 students to Paris

for a week. On the Monday we began our journey to

Paris on the coach. It took about 10 hours but we got

there eventually! Once we sorted our rooms and

unpacked, we headed to the restaurant of the hotel

where we had our meals. After the meal we had a choice

of relaxing in our rooms or to take a walk to the Notre-

Dame to get some exercise.

Tuesday began with a hotel breakfast. We then loaded

back onto the coach and went on a tour of Paris. We

stopped at the Musée de l'Armée which had a parade

going on for the new leader of the fire brigade. In the

afternoon, we explored Montmartre and the basilique

Sacré Coeur. We also had our river cruise in the evening,

which was amazing!

On Wednesday we got up early to go up the Eiffel Tower.

We went up to the second floor and admired the view.

We then unfortunately had to go down! But we then went shopping at a huge shopping centre

called Forum des Halles. After dinner, we were back out to the Arc de Triomphe. There we went up

to the top and looked out across the city at the amazing views!

On Thursday we went to Disneyland Paris where we spent the whole day on rides such as; Big thun-

der, Hyperspace mountain, Indiana jones, It’s a small world and buzz lightyear. I had a great day and

I honestly haven’t stopped talking about the trip as I have loved every minute of it! Thank you so

much to Mrs Mason, Mrs Harrison, Miss Parker and Mr Williams for giving me this opportunity to

visit Paris.

New York Trip

See the following link for a video of the trip:

On the 10th April 2018, Miss Chester, Miss Elsden, Miss Nation and Mr Jose took 28 of us from all years off on a Performing Arts Tour to New York City for 5 days. We had an incredibly packed schedule with so many different activities including Improvisation and Stage Combat work-shops, two Broadway shows, a visit to the 9/11 Memorial, Staten Island, ‘Top of the Rock’ and lots of shopping!

During our workshops we also had question and answer sessions with cast members from both ‘Aladdin’ and ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’, both shows we were seeing whilst we were there, which allowed us to gain insight into what it’s like working as a performer in New York. We also took a trip to ‘Juniors’ for a slice of their world famous cheesecake which was incredible, as well as Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and Ellen’s Stardust Diner, which is the most amazing experience for anyone who loves a musical! A highlight for me was spending our final day in Central Park where we had the whole day to explore.

This trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I cannot stress enough how amazing it was, I would definitely recommend going!

Il y a une mouche dans ma soupe !

(There is a fly in my soup!)

St Michael’s Middle School French linguists visit

the 58 Tour Eiffel Restaurant at QE School

On the 11th of July, a group of Year 8 talented high performing linguists from St Michael’s Middle School had the opportunity to visit QE for a French workshop led by a group of Year 10 GCSE French students and hosted by Madame de Saram. It was fantastic to see Matthew Parslow, Remi Dewhirst, Jacob Trigger and Martha Tribe deliver the workshop with huge enthusiasm and an impressive level of French.

The workshop aimed to give students the chance to be creative and show-off their excellent language skills. It also showed them the benefits as well as the value of taking a language for their GCSEs and A-Level.

During the two hour workshop, Madame de Saram’s classroom was converted into the 58 Tour Eiffel restaurant (a famous restaurant located on the second floor of the Eiffel tower) where students took part in various activities such as learning how to order food from a menu and learning how to make complaints about their food for example “il y a une mouche dans ma soupe ! = there is a fly in my soup!”

Students watched the promotional video for the 58 Tour Eiffel restaurant plus a scene from the Mr. Bean on holiday movie. Acting out the role of Monsieur Trump and Monsieur Macron was just one of the role-play scenarios to practise French and be creative.

At the end of the activities, St Michael’s School linguists put their newly learnt knowledge and vocabu-lary to the test by ordering drinks, croissants and snacks in French from Year 10 students who acted as waiters.

The workshop was a great success with all of the Year 8 students showing immense interest in taking French as one of their GCSEs, describing the event as a ‘wonderful time’ and a ‘memorable experience’ for both the students and teachers Madame Paton and Madame Der who attended.

Remi Dewhirst 10B French

Feedback form St Michael’s Middle School:

“We really enjoyed the French experience we were offered and we can’t thank the QE French department enough!”

“The students presented their lesson amazingly!”

“It was really engaging and we can’t wait to be at that level when we’re at QE!”

“On entering the classroom, the tables were presented like a French café and there was music playing. It felt very welcoming. C’était fantastique!”

“MERCI BEAUCOUP!”

GCSE French Conference

GCSE French Conference

On the 27th March, a group of year 10 and year 11 GCSE French students had the

fascinating opportunity to visit Reading University for a conference regarding the

new exam. This experience allowed us to receive detailed advice from language

professionals and practise exam strategies in a supportive environment.

We explored Theme 2, especially the new component involving charity work, as a

gateway to understanding the different facets of the exam and how best to approach

them. We were each presented with a comprehensive workbook containing

important vocabulary, practice questions and information about the different ways

examiners could test our knowledge.

Overall, the day provided reassurance and additional help for year 11 students close

to exams, and a taste of what lies ahead for year 10 students, allowing extra time to

prepare for their own exams next May.

Fundraising for Peru

In the summer, along with 17 other students from QE I will be travelling to Peru to build classrooms and com-munity buildings and teach English to the children living in poverty. We will also be assisting with wildlife con-servation programmes, to protect biodiversity as well as learning about the culture and lifestyles of different tribes.

I have arranged many fundraising events to cover the costs of this expedition including two successful quiz nights – one raising over £1200 - bag-packs, raffles and group walks – practising for hikes out in Peru and getting to know one another. I have ran stalls at local events, however to raise significant funds, I needed a re-ally big challenge. I decided to cycle 125 miles from Poole to Pontypool, Wales on Saturday 12th May.

I left at 6am on Saturday and rode to the top end of Dorset, having my first break at Stourhead. The first 40km was really hilly however I enjoyed cycling down country roads in the morning and gained some speed. I com-pleted 1/3 of my journey in just over 2½ hours - well ahead of schedule. After cycling up hill after hill, I reached my next stop which was just outside Bath. I rode through the two tunnels under the city of Bath and along the railway path to Bristol, and made my way to the Severn Bridge crossing to Wales.

My journey was extended by 25 miles due to a detour through the welsh countryside towards Newport, just before my destination, Pontypool. I was welcomed by family and friends – after 10½ hours of riding I felt elated but ex-tremely tired.

This experience was challenging but one I’ll never forget. I have decided to give the remainder of my donations to a charity in Cusco, supporting disabled children. I raised £1200 for this chal-lenge and hope to reach £1500 with ad-ditional sponsorship.

Donations can be made on my fundraising page https://www.gofundme.com/mollys-peru-volunteering-expedition. I would like to thank everyone who has donated so far and my sponsors - the Electric Bike Centre and Pedal Cycles.

Many congratulations to Oliver Fairman on his amazing achievements in the

swimming world. We wish him every success in the future.

I have been swimming competitively since the age of 9 and recently made the move to Poole SC where I am

coached by Barry Alldrick. My achievements this season have been to qualify for Long Course Winter

Regionals, Long Course Winter Nationals, followed by British Champs.

I am currently working towards qualifying for nationals where you need to obtain a ranking of the top 24 in

the country for British or the next 20 for English, I am currently on target to go to British nationals ranked in

the top 4 for my 50, 100 and 200 Backstroke, 200 I.M. (4th) and 400 I.M. (6th) and English top 3 for my 1500m

Freestyle. My previous two seasons at nationals I won a gold medal in my 200 Backstroke (2016), a bronze

medal in 200 Backstroke and a gold medal in my 1500m Freestyle (2017)

My most recent achievement was to attend the South West Regionals where I achieved 5 gold medals and

claimed 2 Dorset records, one in the 100 Backstroke and the other in the 200 I.M. Due to my achievements

from January-May I have been selected to represent a South West team going to Bulgaria at the end of June

at an international competition.

My aim for 2019 is to make the selection for the European Juniors and World Juniors.

International Success

We are very proud of ex student Anna Jesty who is having enormous success in the show jumping field. Last

year she was long listed for the Europeans and this year Anna and her horse were selected to represent Great

Britain at the FEI Dressage European Championships as a Young Rider. This was held in Fontainbleau in

France recently and her father said:

“it was an amazing experience , one I’m sure I will never forget. The team spirit of the GB riders was something

else - made us all very proud to be British!!. Anna did exceptionally well, she and Aquiro obtained 70.3% in the

Team test which was an International personal best for that test- what a Champion debut that was! The Young

Rider team secured a very credible 6th place . Although a small mistake in the Individual Test knocked her score

a bit she still qualified for the elusive freestyle on the last day - only the top 18 riders go through out of 61 run-

ners so a massive achievement there

too! Only one other GB member

qualified for this. All in all Anna did

amazingly well producing good tests

on all days even though It was very

testing conditions with temperatures

up to 35 deg most days!!

She even drove us and her horse

over there in a massive 18ton horse-

box - not a mean feat by itself!”

Congratulations Anna and very

best wishes for future success.

Buddhist Workshop

Year 12 and Year 9 students ventured into Wimborne recently to participate in a Tibetan Buddhist workshop. The monks made us feel extremely welcome and we soon got stuck in with the different activities. Students took part in prayer flag printing, learning Tibetan, making dukka squares and learning the pain staking art of sand mandalas.

Students got a real flavour of the beauty and skill involved in some of the Buddhist practic-es and were able to ask the monks really interesting questions about their lives and work at their monastery. We also had the privilege of watching the monks creating a sand man-dala that was to completed and displayed as part of the Wimborne Folk festival at the weekend. These mandalas are all made from memory and can take up to 20 years to mas-ter as a skill. A key teaching in Buddhism is about impermanence and nothing lasts forever. On Sunday this stunning creation, in keeping with Buddhist beliefs was then destroyed.

English Year 9 Challenge

This summer a group of our most able students in Year 9 English undertook a challenging project.

They were challenged to independently plan and deliver their own English lesson. Students worked

in groups of 3-4 and spent time together planning out their perfect English lesson of English the way

they like to be taught it, coming up with lots of exciting ideas including an analysis ‘snowball fight’

and some engaging dingbats! They showed incredible maturity and were highly inspirational for the

students they taught – classes of top set Year 8 students at Allenbourn, Cranborne and St Michael’s

Middle School. This allowed the Year 8 students a unique preparation for studying English with us

here at Queen Elizabeth’s. The students gave great explanations and the exercise really helped

them to consolidate their learning and understanding of GCSE requirements also, as they able to

communicate these very clearly. It is a real challenge for a student to stand up in front of a class

even for ten minutes, so to teach a full hour lesson is an incredible achievement.

Snow Woman

They say she’s a traitor. A beautiful demon who integrates herself with human life. She enjoys the simplicity of the monotonous, rep-etitious cycle.

One snowy night, she visits an old couple, seeking shelter, to warm her cold hands by the fire. When the witching hour comes, she leaves to continue her adventure; but she is stopped by a hand on her wrist.

The old man attempts to prevent her unseasonal departure and notices the chill on her skin. Before his eyes, the beautiful woman melts into a drift of snow, which is swept by a breeze out of the chimney.

A Spark If we can all achieve why don’t we? A failure once said If you never stop learning Never stop moving forward You can and will achieve So why didn’t he? Through life we experience and fear And yet still we get no where near We step forward and step back And the problem is just that We step back We hesitate We tell others do that while we just wait Procrastinate and say not today The first time you fail shouldn’t be the last You shouldn’t be content if its half arsed Every time we jump off that cliff We want to reach the other side Yet too often we fall below Happy to show we have given up But that isn’t right You have to jump again and again Until you reach that light Every time you try every time you jump your testing that flint To reach that spark We’re not afraid of being inadequate We’re afraid we’ll shine beyond measure Leaving ourselves and friends behind Losing our minds No That isn’t the truth Our lights lift the doubts and shadows off others Our lights subconsciously encourage others So go jump again Try again Find that spark Dylan Watton

Furthermore, we are thrilled to announce that five of our Year 9 and 10 pupils are prize winners in Wimborne History Festi-val’s Wimborne in World War One Competition. Pupils wrote a 750 word story based on this theme. Their achievement is incredibly impressive, as indicated by the judges’ feedback:

Victoria King has won First Prize in the senior teenage class. The use of emotions and phrases relating to the Minster were remarked on by the judges.

Matthew Parslow has won Second Prize in the same class. His story was written with pathos with good use of the senses. The emphasis on irrational behaviour during conflicts was very original.

Gillen Minchin has won Third Prize in the same class. It was very well researched.

Oliver Demanuele has been awarded a Highly Commended. Good use of dialogue and plenty of atmosphere.

Martha Tribe has been awarded a Highly Commended. The description of clashing instruments to represent warring sides was very unusual.

Individual prize winners will be presented with their awards during Wimborne History Festival, on Saturday 21st July at Allen-bourn School. Here are the first paragraphs of the pupils’ stories:

Throughout the term Miss Halford and I have

been very busy running tennis club. This year has

probably been one of the best for weather and

attendance from mid-April to mid-July, without a

break for rain! During this time boys and girls

teams have played a total of 10 matches with

varying degrees of success against schools across

Dorset.

Well done to the boys for reaching the division 2

final which was won by Thomas Hardye School in

a thrilling match this week. The boys involved

throughout the series of matches played were

Will Sherlock, Ned Simmonds, and both year 10,

Logan Blandford and Oliver Rawles, both year 9.

Both boys and girls teams were made up of a combination of year 9 and 10 students so many will have gained

valuable experience as they move on to next year or to their clubs outside school.

The girls’ team comprised of Alice Watson, Sophie Madden, Sophie Duffy, Jess Davies, Rebecca Cousins and Lily

Heywood. All of them are in year 9 and many of them competing with little match experience. All of the girls gained

a valuable insight into their own skills and tactics which will take them forward in the future.

The highlight for many was a fantastic day spent at

Wimbledon on men`s quarter -finals day. We were

lucky enough to watch two excellent and memora-

ble matches. The first between Federer and Ander-

son. Followed by Isner versus Raonic.

This will be my last contribution to tennis at QE as I

am leaving this summer. I have always been im-

pressed by the students’ enthusiasm for tennis and

I am sure this will continue as we promote and

support a vibrant sport through the QE community

and beyond.

The year 10 football team have had a very competitive year. They were entered in to 3 cups this year; the Dorset

County Cup, The ESFA National Cup and the PEDSSA Cup. The National Cup started first and the boys reached round

6 and were among the last 62 clubs left in the whole country. We managed to beat LeAF Studio School, Poole High,

Glenmoor and Winton, Crispin School and Lytchett Minster Upper School before eventually succumbing to

St Peter’s CE High School from Exeter. This was a great achievement for the team and I am sure the experience will

stand them in good stead for year 11.

The County Cup saw them start with great confidence before Lytchett Minster were able to enact a bit of revenge

as we lost in the semi-final in a very well contested affair.

The PEDSSA campaign proved to be the most successful of all and the team did exceptionally well to beat Poole

Grammar School in the final. Oliver Wilson and Luke Kelly deserve a special mention as both scored a hat-trick as

the summer weather finally started to show!

This has been a tremendous effort by the whole squad this year and things are looking right for year 11. Special

mention must go to all the parents who have supported us along the way and have been kind enough to supply

oranges at half-time (Mrs Willcox). The support on the sidelines really does matter to us all and we are very

grateful.

Congratulations to the following students:

Mr S Green - Head of Physical Education Faculty

Each year QE students go down to help at Wimborne First School Sports day.

This year due to our ACE festival being on at the same time some amazing year 11 students volunteered to go and help in their own time. They were:

Katie Jenkins, Ellie Hunwick, Iona Berriem, Katie Moody, Jack Ayton and Lili Howard

They were absolutely amazing in helping the staff and students at Wimborne First School and were a credit to QE, themselves and their parents. Thank you so much it really does make a difference to the running of the sports day. What fantastic role models for the younger students to aspire to.

Athletics—Year 9 and 10 Girls and Boys

Track and Field Cup Regional Finals 2018

QE are proud to announce that our students represented the school fantastically well in the Track and Field Cup Round 1. For those new to the Cup, it consists of area rounds, which progress to regional and then national. Athletes run, jump and throw as an individual but their results equate to points which go towards a team combination. Top teams progress through to the next round. Both the boys and girls teams travelled to Kings Park, Bournemouth in May for the first round and despite cold windy conditions they produced some excellent performances. The girls came 3rd and the boys came 3rd, meaning both teams progressed to the regional ‘B’ finals which was an outstanding achievement. In June we all travelled to Basingstoke for the regional finals, where the weather was kinder to us this time, with sunny calm weather! Runs, jumps and throws were fantastic and there was a real team spirit in the air. Competition started aptly with 2 boys stepping up to the hammer and gaining good points for a new event. Stand out performances came from Abbie Lovering in the 300m and shot put, Erin Thickett in the 100m and LJ, Kane Aubrey in the 200m and shot put and as well as this, 6 students got individual PB’s. Lastly the relays which always make an exciting end to the day, saw faster times being run by both teams from the previous round, so we couldn’t have asked for more! Behavior and attitude throughout the day was outstanding from all students and it was a real pleasure to be representing QE at this prestigious event. It gives us even more pleasure to say that the girls ranked 7th place and the boys ranked 8th place in the whole of the South West— these are exceptional results. Well done to all involved! Mrs Adams

Town Sports Competition in July In July there will be the annual Town Sports event, which enables x2 athletes per year group to compete for QE and the annual local schools competition. For more information please see Mrs Adams, Mr Rusling or Miss Halford.

Athletics

Having been selected to represent Poole & East Dorset at the county Championships, 14 students from QE had an exceptional day securing 8 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals. Notable performances from Abbie Lovering and Pippa Hine who both won 2 gold medals and wins also for Erin Thickett, Charlotte Piper, Joe Goodwin and Akiva Bassford. Following their results at Kings Park, 8 of the group were then selected to represent Dorset at the South West Championships in Exeter the following week. The culmination of the season for schools athletics is the English Schools and two students from QE were part of Dorset's team of 27 that travelled to the Alexandra Stadium last weekend. Along with Grace Copeland, Abbie Lovering was selected to compete at her second National Finals. Having finished 5th in the 800m last year at Junior Girl level, Abbie has worked hard and become a 300m Hurdler. Competing against girls a year older than her, Abbie ran a superb race in her semi final taking nearly half a second of her Personal Best. Across the 3 races that contained 23 athletes, Abbie finished an agonising 9th and missed out on a place in the final by 6/100ths of a second. This should not take anything away from her superb performance and I hope for even better things a year from now. Grace Copeland 2018 has been a truly memorable year for Grace in terms of her athletic achievements. The 2017 season finished in disappointing fashion at the English Schools in Birmingham and as an upset Grace left the track that day, no one could envisage what would occur in the following 12 months. Following that race in 2017, Grace took some time away from racing and got herself healthy and ready to run again. She returned to racing in October in Cardiff for the first race of the National Cross Country series. An excellent performance there continued the recovery process and that was followed by another strong finish at Milton Keynes in Race 2. Another top 6 finish at the South of England Championships in January, had started to get her noticed by the International Selectors. Fol-lowing her 8th place finish at the Inter County Championships in February, at Loughborough, Grace received the phone call that she had been working towards since she first pulled on her running shoes as an 8 year old. It was the call to inform her that she had been selected to run as member of team of 6 for England Schools in Paris at the World Championships. The trip to Paris was everything and more than Grace could have expected and a 52nd place finish and Team Silver was the icing on the cake. Returning from Paris and as the track campaign was getting started, Grace was then se-lected to run again for England in an International 5km road race in Italy in early May. Her time of 17.34 minutes was good enough to secure her a fantastic 11th position. All eyes moved to the track and creating new personal bests at 800m, 1500m and 3km. And so to Birmingham last weekend, one year on at the venue of her 'darkest hour' and English Schools 2018. Ignoring a fast early pace on a hot day, Grace stuck to her game plan and ran a 3.15 minute first kilometre, and sat in midfield. As the pace of others dropped, Grace picked them off one by one, whilst continuing an even pace, 6.30 minutes for 2km. With 500m to and sitting in 4th place, Grace wound up her pace and moved into 3rd. The two leaders and pre race favourites were a good distance ahead and it left 3 girls to battle for bronze. As the bell sounded, Grace continued to kick and even-tually broke the resistance of the girls from Essex and Cornwall with 100m to go. As she cruised through the line in a new personal best of 9 minutes 44 seconds, she had won Dorset's first medal at the Nationals since 2016 and the cheers of her teammates reverberated around the stadium. What a difference a year makes! To round off the weekend, Grace marched in the parade with her England Team mates was given the honour of car-rying the flag at the head of the parade. Ed Phillips was awarded the Dorset County Football U16's Player of the Season Award at the annual Dor-

set Football Awards recently hosted at Blandford School.

Ed has been in consistent form throughout the season representing his County. He has played with maturity in

goal and an unwavering commitment to the squad, and Ed had a 100 per cent attendance at both games

and training, this dedication was recognised and commended.

to his development and the way

Ed has progressed. He is fully

Golf 2018

The renaissance of Dorset Schools Golf continued in 2018 after it's return last year. The Team and Individual Strokeplay tournament was set to happen in late April at Came Down. However, acting on the forecast for an impending storm, it was postponed until May11th. As a school we were represented by 4 Boys, Harvey Randall, Tom Kollberg, Tom Cartwright-Terry and George Thompson. The postponement had led to a clash with the Dorset Ladies Championships and meant that our two 6 handicap girls, Megan Thompson and Louise Burke would be playing at Dudsbury. On a breezy day at Came Down, near Dorchester, Harvey put on a masterclass of ball striking, re-sulting in a one over par round of 70. This gave him a five stroke victory and he became the Dorset Schools Boys Champion. The nominated team of three in Tom, Harvey and Tom had an aggregate score of net 139. This was good enough for second place and sadly meant that they just missed out on qualification for the National School Team Finals which took place last week in Lincolnshire. With their performances, Harvey and Tom Kollberg were selected to represent Dorset Schools at the South West Championships at Wells Golf club at Half Term. Along with two boys from Budmouth and Thomas Hardye's, Harvey and Tom played superb golf on a tricky, narrow course in damp and windy conditions and secured the South West Team Championship title. The photo below shows the boys receiving the trophy. Moving on from that event, Tom with his top ten finish qualified for the English Schools Finals in July at The Shire Golf Club, North London. On a baking hot day, on a tough course, with rounds of 81 and 78 (15 over par), he managed to come a very respectable 27th against some of the best young play-ers in the country. We are very much hoping to see golf at QE grow over the next year as the county schools association looks to introduce at least one more event into the calendar. Any boys or girls with handicaps, who are interested in playing golf for the school should see Mr Rusling.

Dorset School Games 2018

Queen Elizabeth’s School year 9 Indoor Rowers qualified for the Dorset School Games that was held on the 20th June 2018 at Bryanston school. The day started with an opening ceremony which included a band from St Michael’s Middle school. Olympic Athlete, Montell Marcelle Douglas, who is a British sprinter and former British record holder for the 100 metres at 11.05 seconds spoke at the opening. She inspired all the students with her speech before they went to compete for their respective districts in Dorset.

Indoor Rowing Competition

Our year 9 students had to compete in an individual race which was to row as far as they could for 4 minutes and a relay where thay had to work as a team and row 2,000 metres.

The teams were:-

Year 9 boys Matthew Kellaway Danny Nightingale Joe Goodwin

Year 9 Girls Adele Traverse Ella Cooper Emily Naish Bethan Stephens

They all performed with outstanding commitment. Lewis Collins came 3rd overall and was awarded a bronze medal. The boys relay team also came 3rd and again were presented with a bronze medal each.

We also entered a year 9 ‘Can do’ Rowing competition

Our team included:-

Harley Richardson Zoe Cluley James Ketchely Chloe Legg Ryan Laine-Turner Amelia Godfrey Samantha Samways

All students had to compete in a one minute Row; Race either a 2 ½ minute row or 3 ½ minutes. Harley Richardson came 3rd overall in the 3 minute row and revceived a Bronze medal. James Ketchley came 1st gaining a Gold medal in the 2 ½ minute row and Chloe legg came 3rd winning a Bronze medal in the 2 ½ minute row. All students participated with determination and 100% com-mitment and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Zoe Cluley rowed her race down in the boat house. She was absolutely amazing and rowed 440 me-tres in 2 ½ minutes.

The students also had another opportunity to row in the relay race. Only Sammy; James and Ryan volunteered to compete. They had to row a 4 minute race and came 2nd overall winning a Silver medal.

It was an absolute pleasure to be a part of a very special day and watch our QE students do so well. They were a credit to themselves; their parents and the school.

Well done to all.
