Welcome back!
I hope everyone had a great summer! As usual, my summer flew by and I can’t believe
it is already September! While I will miss all of the wonderful things that summer brings,
I am looking forward to all of the activities that start back up again and all the fun events
that autumn brings.
Over the summer, the ASHRAE Board was working hard on planning seminars and
events for this 2015-2016 ASHRAE year. Our first dinner seminar is on September 9th at
Dave and Buster’s and will be our Membership Promotion/YEA Night featuring a
presentation on “High Performance Energy Recovery Units”. Once again, we will be
offering Certificates of Attendance for all of our educational seminars this year.
In October, our Basic HVAC System Design Course will be starting up again. This one-
year course is great for anyone who is new to our industry or wants to learn more about
HVAC design. I highly recommend it and found it very informative when I took it a year
out of college.
As we enter the 2015-2016 year, I would like to thank Mike Witkowski for all his hard
work as President for the 2014-2015 year. For the past 10 years, Mike has been serving
various ASHRAE leadership positions both at the local and regional level. I would also
like to thank the Board Members and Chapter Chairs who supported Mike to make 2014
-2015 another successful year. Our Chapter received several awards at the Chapter
Regional Conference (CRC) for its service to the Philadelphia region the past year.
I look forward to working with all of you this upcoming year and will do my best to
ensure another successful year for the Philadelphia Chapter of ASHRAE. Please let me
know if you have any questions or ideas to improve our Chapter.

ASHRAE Philadelphia Corporate Sponsorships Available
The Philadelphia Chapter invites your company to join as a Corporate Sponsor for the 2015-2016 year. Your firm’s
participation in this program would enable us to make a wonderful donation to ASHRAE Research Promotion which
includes over $ 1.5 million in local research funding.
Corporate Sponsors are listed on our web site, in our newsletter, and in our annual directory. They receive free copies
of our directory and recognition at all of our events. With the ease of one payment, you may get all this, as well as free
dinner tickets good for our monthly meetings, and make a valuable contribution to ASHRAE Research at the same time.
Since not all companies have the same financial capabilities or quantity of employees, we offer a few different levels of
corporate sponsorship. Each level will receive the same types of benefits, with some differences in quantities and
discounting.
We hope you will decide to join us as a Corporate Sponsor. If you are interested, please email us at
[email protected]. The Board of Governors thanks you for your continued support of ASHRAE. We hope
that this year is successful for your firm.
YEA Update
The ASHRAE Region III CRC brought together YEA Committee Chairs from various chapters to discuss their roles and
responsibilities at its YEA workshop. We had valuable discussion that covered the challenges and successes that each
chapter has experienced. Several ASHRAE members with senior level positions attended the workshop and offered
their input and experiences, too. We look to take away increased knowledge from this session and put it into practice as
we move into the upcoming year.
Canstruction® Update
The Philadelphia Chapter is looking to
build on last year’s success and is
looking for volunteers to help with the
design and planning.
Please contact Chris Gale
or Mike Witkowski if you are
interested.
This year’s theme is Redemption.

September Speaker Bio & Presentation Summary
Rudolf Zaengerle President
Konvekta
Rudolf Zaengerle is the President of Konvekta’s North American operation, a subsidiary of the Swiss based
Konvekta AG.
He holds a Master of Mechanical Engineering degree and a PhD in Business Administration both from the Swiss
Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. He has also studied at Harvard Business School.
He was an Assistant Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology’s Energy Sustainability & Urban
Planning Institute before he relocated to the USA more than 20 years ago to manage Swiss technology businesses in
North America.
“High-Performance Energy Recovery Systems”
HVAC systems are among the greatest energy consumers of large buildings, especially buildings with 100 percent
outside air. High-performance run-around energy recovery systems (RAERS) with advanced control software are
operating at efficiencies of net 70 to 90 percent (based on annual energy consumption for heating and cooling), taking
into account the additional electricity needed for glycol pumps and added fan power to compensate for air pressure drop
in the coils. Advanced control software provides recovery and efficiency verification, as well as continuously reporting
the reduction in carbon and energy consumption.
While the thermodynamics of an energy recovery system are relatively simple, it is critical that high-performance
systems operate at optimum performance under varying operating parameters. With several variable input parameters,
including outside air, supply air, and return air temperatures; air volumes; and glycol volumes and temperatures,
controlling and optimizing a system requires a numerical-simulation-based controller that allows variable amounts of
heat transfer fluid to be circulated throughout the system.
In multi-functional systems, additional heat and/or cold is introduced into the glycol circuit, either to boost the heating/
cooling capability of the energy recovery system from waste heat/cold sources, or to control the supply air temperature
to the building to eliminate the need of separate heating/cooling coils in the supply air handlers. These features add yet
another level of complexity to the controller function.
Verification and proof of energy saved and the reduction of the carbon footprint are essential elements of a sustainable
building. An energy recovery system controller with advanced control software can provide this information to the
building owner on a continuous basis.

Choosing a Fluid Balancing Design Strategy
By Rod Brandon, S.A. Armstrong Limited
Reprinted from Mechanical Business
Www.mechanicalbusiness.com
Presently, there are a number of approaches to hydronic fluid flow balancing. These include:
Pipe Stretching - the practice of choosing pipe lengths/diameters and components of various sizes to appear (to the
pump) to be of equal resistance for all parallel circuits, regardless of actual length.
Reverse Return - the practice of running equal physical pipe lengths for all parallel circuits, regardless of proximity to the
mechanical room.
One Pipe Load Pumps - using a small variable -speed circulator per terminal unit to deliver the diverted flow required
from a none pipe circuit.
Circuit Balancing - the practice of adjusting flow regulating valves to balance the pressure drop of all circuits within the
system, to ensure design flow is available to each terminal unit.
Auto Flow Limiting - the practice of using valves in each circuit, capable of self-regulating flow over a range of
differential pressure conditions.
As discussed in “Yes, Balancing Is Important,” (Mechanical Business, December 2007) every hydronic system, whether
for heating or cooling, must be properly balanced to achieve maximum system performance, optimum operating
efficiency, and to ensure building occupant comfort.
Without hydronic fluid flow balancing, most favored circuits (typically on the lowest floor and closest to the mechanical
room) will receive the majority of flow and least favored will receive less. The heating or cooling capabilities of the HVAC
system terminal units are dependent on the hydronic fluid flow through them. The fluid balancing process assures that at
least design flow is available to every terminal unit in the building, under any normal operating conditions.
A common misconception is that design conditions are rarely encountered as “design days’ are few and far between. In
reality, design conditions are commonly encountered every time a night setback resets, and the system immediately calls
for heating or cooling through the building.
