a day in the life of...Rodelito Larga AuditI joined KPMG in the Channel Islands as an Assistant Manager in December 2014. Prior to joining KPMG I worked for another Big 4 firm in the Philippines for more than six years, including a ten-month secondment to Tokyo, Japan, specializing in financial services audit.

I moved here to expand my knowledge of financial services and alternative investments, attracted by KPMG’s reputation for developing its people, and experience a different culture. As an added bonus, I now enjoy a better work-life balance.

The Channel Islands is the change of environment I was seeking. It is a break from the hassle of city life. Everything is near and convenient with hardly any traffic and no long commutes to work.

As someone who loves photography and travelling, being on this side of the world has proved to be one of the best decisions I could have made. The island’s location makes it convenient to travel around Europe and at the same time, experience four seasons without the harsh cold of winter or the heat and humidity of a city summer.

a day in the life of...Chantal KuijpersAdvisoryI joined the Jersey advisory team in September 2014 after spending two years gaining industry experience with a bank in South Africa.

Adjusting to life in the Channel Islands has been easy. Everyone has been friendly and welcoming and I had a lot of support from HR whilst relocating to the island.

My aim is to develop my skills and build a strong career in advisory. I am delighted that I was promoted to Manager in April 2015, six months after joining the firm.

Moving to the Channel Islands from South Africa was a big step but I am glad I made it for the career and personal benefits. The island lifestyle is cosmopolitan and there is so much going on throughout the year in terms of the events organised by KPMG and the wider island community.

a day in the life of...Chris Lowe Tax ManagerI joined the Guernsey tax team in January 2011 having qualified as a chartered accountant in the UK.

I chose the Channel Islands to further my career due to the strong financial services sector on the islands and the proximity to the UK. The transition to island life was a lot easier than expected and the numerous social events KPMG organise is a great way to meet the international work force and develop strong friendships.

The tax department in the Channel Islands enabled me to gain experience working with major clients in the financial sector and high net worth individuals as well as locally owned companies which help develop a much broader view of the tax environment. I have been impressed by the variety of tax work covered in the Channel Islands and the level of responsibility I have been encouraged to take on.

I was promoted to Manager in 2014 and have recently moved to Jersey. The strong team spirit and the work life balance on the islands is a real positive which has encouraged me to stay here. The islands have so much to offer, both professionally and personally. There are a number of opportunities within the department to help carve out the career you want and the islands offer lots of sporting and recreational activities to keep you busy after work. Moving to the Channel Islands has enhanced my career and personal life.

KPMG in the Channel Islands is part of a truly worldwide network of KPMG member firms and our clients are also operating in increasingly globalised markets. That means we can offer the opportunity to develop a career with an international perspective.

International opportunities range from short-term assignments of just three months to long-term assignments of two or three years. And, if you decide to move across service areas, you’ll probably move on a permanent basis.

We'll give you all the help you need to adjust to your new role, from assistance with relocation costs to mentoring support. This allows you to get the most out of your new experience, whether that’s working with different types of clients, learning about a new industry or simply settling into a new culture and way of life.

Change extends your horizons. It gives you a fresh perspective and the opportunity to learn from others. That's why we make it easy for you to move around at KPMG, both between member firms and different functions. There may also be opportunities for you to go on secondment to a client or another organisation.

Simon Guilbert, Audit ManagerSpeaks about his secondment experience in San Francisco

I joined the Guernsey office as an audit assistant in 2007 and qualified in 2009. Several promotions followed and I achieved a manager role in 2012.

I have worked primarily in financial services with some engagements that are utilityproviders and other trading/government entities. Within financial services, I have worked on large banks, investment funds, private equity, captive insurance and have exposure to audits of entities that are listed on various exchanges. I was heavily involved in the transition to a fully electronic audit file in 2010-11 and have acted as a trainer to assistants and in-charges amongst other non-core audit tasks.

I felt that after seven years I needed to experience something new and to test myself in a larger office environment. There was clearly opportunity for further promotion when I embarked on my secondment and the chance to work on larger-scale audits and gain exposure to the US style of doing things really appealed. In terms of location, I don’t think California ever needed much selling as the weather is beautiful. There is a large and growing Asset Management/Alternative Investments sub-practice, which together with the recent acquisition of hedge fund audit specialists, Rothstein Kass, has presented a lot of opportunities.

Working in a large city office as part of the largest practice in the KPMG global network has exposed me to the scale of the brand and the resources that the office here can draw on. In terms of client work I am lucky enough to be a manager on the audit of TPG which is a global premium top 50 client and the US’ largest private equity client. I work with a large team comprised of highly motivated, intelligent and willing associates and senior associates who also happen to be extremely nice people.

I am really enjoying being part of a prestigious team in a key position with some of the brightest and best that the San Francisco office has to offer. It’s a real challenge but immensely rewarding.

The hours are longer than I’m used to but somehow that is less of an issue than I thought it would be. Personally, I absolutely love the San Francisco vibe –it’s a crazy city with a lot of crazy people! There are so many distinct neighbourhoods and districts, the choice of cuisine is fantastic and the weather is just right. Plus there are so many things to see and do both in and out of the city that the real problem is finding the time to do them all.

In most organisations, I would neverget the opportunity to go on a secondment to the US. The processwas far easier than I thought it wouldbe and I got great support everystep of the way. In terms of my career,it is the opportunity to work for an organisation that invests in peoplewho care about what they do both professionally and outside of work.I get to work with young,like-minded, driven yet personablepeople who are always willingto go the extra mile if need be.If and when I ever leave KPMG,the name on the CV will bothopen doors and instantly givemy candidacy legitimacy.

Reading for schools

Each week during term time, a group of employees from KPMG's Jersey and Guernsey offices attend a lunchtime session at Springfield Primary School and Amherst Primary School to assist the children in developing their reading skills. A number of children take part, from all years in the school. This is a great opportunity to work with our local community. Helping others can have a positive effect on an individual’s wellbeing.

Make a Difference Day has now become a weeklong event, where staff members have the opportunity to go to various charities and organisations throughout the Islands to give some practical help or perform some manual labour! In Jersey, this has included painting at Jersey Cheshire Homes, landscaping at Maison des Landes, building at Little Oaks Nursery and many others. In Guernsey, employees also enjoyed helping out at various charities such as Société Guernesiaise conservation projects, Guernsey Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, The North Show, and Les Bourgs Hospice. It is a great day out of the office, and makes a real impact to those in need of some extra hands.

Sports and social

Our goal at KPMG is that everyone should achieve a personal and professional balance in their life. We have always had a reputation as an enjoyable place to work, and we try to live up to it. Sporting and social events happen throughout the year, providing the opportunity to interact and socialise with colleagues across the firm.

Our social activities include team away days, summer and Christmas balls, table quizzes, concerts, theatre and sporting events.

We have a strong sporting culture at KPMG. We participate in intra corporate touch rugby, football, swimming, athletic competitions, netball and golf events. We also compete in cross island tournaments between Jersey and Guernsey. All these events are really great fun and are a good way to meet colleagues from both of our offices in the Channel Islands.

How do you measure one firm against another? How do you determine which one will value you the most?

Salary and bonuses are a starting point, however, money can only be half the story and it is not everyone’s motivating factor for choosing a career. KPMG offers a generous and competitive remuneration package but what truly sets KPMG apart is less quantifiable. We’re talking about our culture of individual support and constant desire to make your professional life here as stimulating as possible.

At KPMG, we are committed to continual and life-long learning across the organisation, and this does not stop once you are qualified or if you have reached director level.Training is seen as an integral part of the overall performance development process, whether it is in the form of coaching, on-the-job mentoring or more formal courses. We believe in offering employees all the support and encouragement they needto reach their full potential. An annual discussion with your performance managershould help set out your development plans for the year ahead – identifying goalsand the kind of training that will help you meet them. This could cover anything fromtechnical skills to leadership development, and in many cases training will befunded by the firm.

Development opportunities don’t end with training. Industry secondments andinternational assignments to KPMG member firms in other countries can not onlygive you varying professional experiences but quite often life-changing ones aswell. Whatever your ambitions and whatever your areas of interest, we’ll aim toensure you’re always challenged, stretched and, most importantly, fulfilled.

We place great emphasis on our people as we believe them to be our main and most integral resource.

Our reputation is created by the way the people within our network of member firms act with clients, colleagues and their communities.

The KPMG culture is rooted in our values. Our integrity and policy of open and honest communication builds trust and collaboration, while our flexibility and diversity create a culture in which people share knowledge freely, bringing out the very best in each other. Asked why they choose to work with KPMG member firms, many clients talk about our high level of professional ethics, our expertise, our loyalty and our approachability.

Our culture extends beyond good business practice. We are also recognised for the efforts we make towards corporate social responsibility.

Our employees benefit from this forward-thinking approach. A critical element of KPMG’s global vision is to be recognised as an ‘employer of choice’ – to recruit, retain and develop the very best people. In 2013, KPMG in the Channel Islands was awarded the ‘Investor in People Gold Standard’ for supporting, evaluating and promoting the continual development of its employees.

Our people are able to flourish both as professionals and as individuals. They do so knowing that they are part of a responsible and positive organisational culture.

The Channel Islands are self governing British Crown Dependencies located in the Bay of St Malo. The group of islands are 19 miles from the French coast and 70 miles from the south of England. Whilst a possession of the Crown, the islands have their own fiscal and legal system and court of law and have more beneficial tax rates than the United Kingdom.

The currency of both islands is an equivalent to the UK Pound in terms of foreign exchange.

The Channel Islands are a group of five islands and KPMG have offices in the two largest islands, Guernsey and Jersey. Guernsey is 25 square miles in size and Jersey is 45 square miles.

The islands have regular flight connections to a range of UK and European destinations as well as regular ferry links. The flight time to Gatwick is 45 minutes and a ferry takes as little as three hours.

The climate is tempered by the maritime position of the islands and doesn’t suffer extreme temperatures. It is generally warm, dry and sunny in the summer and mild, damp and cloudy in winter.

Both islands boast a diverse population with strong Portuguese, Latvian, South African, Scottish and Irish communities.

Before you arriveOur experienced HR team are well versed in the challenges that people experience when relocating from around the world. They are on hand to provide guidance as to service-providers you may need and to answer the multitude of questions you will have.

Any necessary immigration or housing applications will be arranged for you by the HR team. Once an offer of employment is accepted we advise the candidate on the next steps and provide an estimate of timescales allowing them to manage their expectations.

Travelling to the islandsYour travel to your new home is covered by KPMG. You can either pay for your flights in advance and reclaim the cost or we can book your flights for you.

Once your travel has been finalised we will arrange temporary self-catering accommodation for you. This is to provide you with a base whilst you search for permanent accommodation. We have employees of all levels relocating to both islands and they do not have problems finding somewhere to live.

Your buddyDepending upon your arrival time, your buddy will collect you from the airport and take you to your temporary accommodation. You will be put into contact with your buddy before you arrive and they will also be available to answer questions as they have the recent first-hand experience of relocating and can provide valuable insight.

Settling inYour first three weeks with KPMG will be focused on the culture of the Channel Islands practice, the industries we work in and the clients you will be working with.

We strive to have the majority of our new Assistant Managers starting together as it facilitates the scheduling of training and allows them to enjoy our annual away day. For the away day the offices in Guernsey and Jersey are closed and we organise a fun event for everyone to attend together.

Approximately six weeks after you’ve joined you will have an informal chat with a member of the HR team. This is an opportunity to highlight any needs you may have (for example more industry specific training) and discuss how you are settling in to life with KPMG and the Channel Islands.
