A STEP BACK IN TIME

continued from page 3, Feb. 1987, AVAILABLE BACHELORS ...in 1891 ...

Alexander BOGNAIRD, of the First NationalBank, is perfectly entitled to be classedamong the rest here. He feels best when incompany with the female sex, who are alwayseager to converse with him.

Cliff DUCOMB is always the subject of muchcomplimentary talk among the girls, who oftengo to the drug store just to see him on thepretense of buying. Cliff is one of the "boys"and is cognizant of his best interests.

Frank HORNE, the junior member of the pop-ular drug firm of Brant & Horne, is an attrac-tion for the ladies. Some young lady ought totake advantage of leap year.

Ed REASER, although young yet, possesses afaculty of being admired by the girls. It isdoubtful if Ed's name will appear in this listin four more years.

Will DEVOR, who just recently entered thebar, is destined to become a prominent lawyer. He is eligible to the matrimonial car too. Hisbride will be a lucky one; keep your eye onhim.

Harry MYKRANTZ is prosecuting attorney ofAshland county and more than one lady would beglad to capture him. Harry knows his own bus-iness and generally decides for himself on allquestions.

"Andy" THOMAS, the popular clerk at M. A.Bowman's dry goods store, is a favorite withladies in all instances, and it can't be longuntil one of them gets his promise, if not al-ready given.

Frank KUNKEL has not yet entered the hymen-ial alter. He thinks there is lots of time &doesn't bother about the question. Some beau-tiful smile coming from some beautiful maidwill be successful some of these times.

Will BOCKLEY can't say that he ought not tobe counted here, for he is just the one thatwill suit the girls and they will catch himsome of these times. Will has good tastes andwill give up bachelorship.

Victor LUCE likes the jewelry business, notso much because it is the jewelry businessbut because the ladies always make frequenttrips to the jewelry stores. Girls, don't al-low him to escape this leap year.

Peter BRUBAKER has a situation which wouldenable him to provide for two and he ought todo it. Girls, do you catch on?

Lorin MILLER has battled with theceful attractions of the fair sexyears and is still unmarried; ifmight study over it.

we know Ase GRINDLE wants us to class himin the list of '96. It is doubtful if he willnot make a selection before that time. Hey?

And then there is will WEYGANDT, of thePRESS, who is fighting life's battle single-

handed. Now the girl thata nice big write-up on thecertainly large enough torels - too.

I. W. THOMAS loves to be with the girls forthat matter. Some one of you should pop thequestion to the 'Squire.

Harley HOMAN says Mart BOFFENMYER will getthere when the robins next again. Mart likesto dance and the ladies all like to dance withhim; and one knows whether he is engaged ornot.

George GILBERT sells pianos and organs andthat shows he is waiting for leap year withits reverse of things.

We almost forgot William MISH. He ought tohave been married long, long ago.

Dr. Ed LOUCKS is waiting for CUpid's arrowto strike. He is a good mark, girls!

Jeff Hamilton was engaged once, but it isallover now, and he is doubtless open for en-gagements.

Frank SCHILLING is a good candidate forthis subject. His wife will have music allday long.

will CORDELL sells many a shoe to many alady in Ashland. Girls, he will not get madif you should pop the question to him.

W. I. ILGER is another newspaper man trudg-ing along as though there were no girls tomarry. Newspaper men are unfortunate anyway.

Howard SWARTZ is one of Ashland's young menwhom all the fair class would like to know. The one that gets him can burn gas all night &it won't cost anything.

Ed. MILLER, not the photographer, is alwaysaround when there are any pretty ladies near. His frequent visits out of town are not mys-terious. Don't forget him.

Tully KIPLINGER wants his name to be leftout, but we can't do it; that would not befair for the opposite gender.

Allen MOWREY likes to photograph prettygirls rather than eat or do anything else. Thus another good chance for '92 is open.Just pop the question, he will do the rest.

Dr. David Sampsel, Jr., enjoys himselfbout as well as anybody could who is not mar-ried. If he would try double blessednesswould be much happier we think.

Harry VANOSDALL has his eye set in a parti-cular direction.

Horace McNULTY has been on the bachelorlist before, but he is not too old even now byany means.

Ed. MOORE has been skirmishing around, buthas made no decision as yet. will some girlaid him?

Ohio MOORE will jump with delight if somegirl will only say the word.

Frank FRITZINGER. Why he don't marry wedo not know. Now that leap year is near wethink the time will soon be.

David SHEARER, although hardly a bachelor, ought to begin considering the question of ma-trimony. If he don't soon ask some lass, shewill ask him.

Sherman HULL is open for engagement atleast we take it that way.

Milt EDWARDS, John McDOWELL, Frank HELTMAN,"Biddy" SEARS, and Harry MOORE will come inour list four years hence.

John GOODMAN is the possessor of a finehorse and buggy. "What does he own them for?""Just to get on the good side of the girls."John is looking around for a better half now.

We almost forgot Charles CAMPBELL; it ispeculiar he has gone along thus far wi thou ma-king a choice. How much longer he will remainsingle is an enigma.

Rolla SHARICK is in the race with brightprospects of soon reaching the goal.

Charles GOARD, it is difficult to make onebelieve he isn't a candidate. If the factsare in any way problematical or dubious just

many working toward the same end or hehave stopped before this article wasBut we dare not omit Benjamin MARTIEN,still on the deck with the rest.

Willard MOWREY should not complain; it hasbeen his own fault.

Geo. VESPER is one of the many. The gripof old bachelorship has had a firm hold uponhim.

The writer of the above article has leftthe town for a month, or so, that he may es-cape the shot-gun in the hands of some frenzi-ed party who may take offense real easilyNeither the editor nor reporter is responsiblefor the above.

The Ohio Historical Society has recently microfilmed THE ASHLAND UNION newspaper. Our Chapterhas purchased these six rolls, June 1852-1860 and 1863-1871. This addition to the Ashland Pub-lic Library's microfilmed newspapers will greatly aid us in our family research. As you knowwe completed Shirley Boyd's death notice abstracts from THE ASHLAND TIMES in volume 6 issue 1of THE PASTFINDER. Shirley had abstracted 2 Jan 1861-31 Dec 1862 of THE ASHLAND UNION - asthat was the only issues available on microfilm. Now that we will have more years coveredon microfilm - WE NEED HELP! Won't one of you volunteer to abstract genealogical items fromthese new microfilms? After that is completed we can then compare them with the ASHLAND TIMESand print any items that had not appeared previously. This does not have to be a local person -you can obtain these rolls of microfilm, for 2 weeks useage, on inter-library loan from theHistorical Society - See your local librarian for further information. DO YOUR PART - VOLUNTEER!Address: The Ohio Historical Society, I 71 & 17th Ave., Columbus OH 43211.

"LONG LIFE OF HONOR AND USEFULNESS, Philip Shearer, Prominent Pioneer CiLizen, peacefully PassedAway Friday Morning. (no date or name of paper)

There are men whose lives have been so useful, helpful and cheering that they never seem togrow old, and a time never comes when home and community feel that they can be spared. Such alife was that lived by Philip Shearer, who passed away Friday morning at the home of his son, DavidShearer, Jr., on Highland avenue.

More than fourscore years had been lived in honor and usefulness in this community, and manyand varied have been the changes witnessed in this long life of upright citienship and many havebeen the enterprises to which he had always been ready to contribute his full share. With thestrictest business integrity he combined a genial personality that won for him the same heartyfriendship that he felt towards others.

The Shearer Brothers, Philip and David, have had a prominent part in the upbuilding of thiscity beautiful and progressive. Honest, reli~ble and skilled contracting carpenters, they had alarge share in the growth of the city. With Martin V. KAGEY, another man of the same upright

character, they established the firm of Shearer, Kagey & Co. and built up a great business thathas made their name a guarantee of good faith and honest dealing.

In his home-life Mr. Shearer was the same genial, kindly gentleman that marked him in hisother associations in life. He was a charter member of the Congregational church and gave itloyal support. Outside of home in no place will he be more missed than in the Colonial Club, where he spent many happy hours in the years of his retirement from active business, which tookplace some years ago.

philip Shearer was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, Oct. 7, 1829, where he resided un-til 1837, when his parents removed to this state, and located in Montgomery township, where hehas since lived, with the exception of two years he spent in Iowa. Mr. Shearer was the eighthchild of Solomon and Susannah Shearer, who raised a family of thirteen children, and all marriedbut one. Mr. Shearer was married March 26, 1857, to Martha L. McCulley, who was born near Hayes-ville April 21, 1825, and passed away some years ago. Only two children survive, Mrs. FrederickJ. BOCKLEY and David Shearer, Jr., both of this city. They also had one child by adoption, Eliza-beth H., wife of J.B. AMES of Columbus.

Funeral services at the David Shearer, Jr., home, No. 110 Highland avenue, Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. William SMITH, pastor of the Congregational church. Interment in AshlandCemetery. "

Also in the Bible were announcement cards (which were kept and placed with the photocopies & obit.):

Dr. and Mrs. J.A. HISEY announce the marriage of their daughter Rhea Regine to Mr. Leon C. MASONon Thursday, the thirtieth of March, Nineteen hundred sixteen, Ashland, Ohio. - Mr. and Mrs. JohnShearer announce the marriage of their daughter Evelyn to Mr. Floyd Emerson LOGEE on Friday, Sep-tember the eighth, Nineteen hundred and sixteen, Ashland, Ohio. Per many requests on a history of our Chapter perhaps the following will help:

OH! THAT FIRST YEAR

The 26th of January 1970 marked what hoped to be the beginning of an Ashland County Chapterof The Ohio Genealogical Society (O.G.S.). A social was held at Mrs. Bruce (Anne) Budd's homefor those persons interested in forming a genealogy group.

plans moved swiftly - locating other interested persons, a meeting place, programs, etc.and by February the 24th a program on HOW TO was held at the Ashland College Historical & Educa-tional Center (now the Aphland County Historical Society).

By March the 16th (perhaps before) announcements appeared in the local newspaper of a geneal-ogy group being formed. Elections were held on the 17th of March during a meeting at the AshlandPublic Library. Officers elected were: President, Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Hall; Vice-President, Mrs.Paul (Diana) Weaver; Recording Secretary, Mrs. Shelby (Olive) Edwards; Corresponding Secretary,Mrs. James (Marlene) DeRan (now Mrs. Larry Brewer); and Treasurer - undetermined due to incompleterecords.

In just three short months, but seemingly longer to those 'workers', a dream of being aChapter of O.G.S came true. The Ashland group received their Charter at the State Society'sConvention held in Columbus the 10th and 11th of April. Immediately Ashland's Chapter became astrong supporter of the State Society by local member Anne Budd being elected an O.G.S. Treasurer.

Those persons who were Charter members of the Ashland County Chapter of the Ohio GenealogicalSociety were: Mrs. Anna Becker, Mrs. Bruce Budd, Mrs. Merle Conrad, Mr. & Mrs. Shelby Edwards, Mrs.Elrie Evel, Miss Margaret Forbes, Miss Frances Freer, Miss Shirley Gebhart (now Mrs. James Slater),Mrs. Nedra Keener, Mrs. Ralph~kes, Mrs. Elizabeth S. McCorkle, Mrs. Pearl S. Myer, Mrs. DorseySatterfield, Miss Jeanne Sharick, Mrs. Pauline E. Sharick, Mr. & Mrs. Fred E. Woode, Mrs. David P.Enck, Miss Maybelle Wise, Mrs. Robert C. Hall, Mrs. Paul R. Weaver, Mrs. James DeRan. Perhapsthere were others, but if so their names are now lost to history.

The Chapter moved forward by holding 'learning sessions' for members and guests. A libraryexchange was held in April, research at headquarters in Mansfield in May, a research trip to theWestern Reserve Historical Society in June, September saw O.G.S. President Lida Flint Harshmanas a guest speaker, in November members attended an O.G.S. meeting in Mansfield, October a lessonon how to find that ancestor through the mail and December a session on how to keep records.

The first surviving recorded Motion by the Chapter was to index the Will Duff collumns that(cont. on pg. 21)

ASHLAND, NEBRASKA

Leatrice Behnk, Rt. 1 Box 136, Greeley, Nebraska, 68842 has sent more information on the historyof Ashland, Saunders County, Nebraska. From THE FIRST 10.0 YEARS, ASHLAND NEBRASKA 1857-1957 bythe Chamber of Commerce & Centennial Committee: The name Ashland is credited to an ardent admirerof Henry Clay who was charmed by the natural beauty of the scenery and it's seeming advantages ofbecoming a future city. Clays home, Ashland, Kentucky was honored. Though Ashland was not or-ganized until 1857, it is mentioned in a notation in 1856, 'Scouts were sent out in April 1856 asfar as Salt Basin (Lincoln) and Ashland'. The town of Ashland was known as Saline Ford on SaltRiver where the only rock bottomed ford lay to furnish a safe crossing for freight caravans.Ashland, Nebraska is in Saunders County, but was known as Calhoun County until 1862.

we also hear from Lavonne Blankenbiller Tombaugh, 600 East 23rd #302, Kearney, Nebraska, 68847.Lavonne sent us a nice packet of information on Ashland, Nebraska. In this packet are maps anda history of the area. The name of Ashland was given to the town by Mr. Argyle, the man creditedwith organizing it. perhaps this will answer Leatrice's question "I often wonder if those friendsnames (ones who induced Christopher Keetle to settle in Nebraska) could have been men with thesurnames of Reigle & Alkire, for both of Christopher's daughters married men born in Ohio withthese surnames, but married in Nebraska." Alkire and Argyle are very close sounding.

THANKS Leatrice and Lavonne - its members like you two who make our Chapter great.

We've heard from WI, NE, & MI - Now how about Alabama, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana,Mississippi and Oklahoma?

The following is from an unknown donor and an unknown newspaper - although marked in pencil atthe top is "AM. VOL., Carlisle PA": "Melancholy Death. We have been favored by a gentleman ofthis place with an extract of a letter, received in town, bringing the sad tidings, that Dr.James W. PEEBLES, at Ashland, Ohio, formerly a resident, and a native of this borough, was ac-cidentally shot on the 30th of November, while in the company of a number of gentlemen, whowere trying their rifles. The ball of one of the guns entered his brain and caused instantdeath. He was in his 22d year. - Shippensburg Herald." Also marked in pencil was the date -4 Jan 1838. Thanks to whomever left this item at the Ashland Public Library!

From Mrs. Jerry Ann stout, 1739 N. Kessler, Wichita KS 67203: WAYNESBURG REPUBLICAN (newspaper),Waynesburg, Greene Co PA, Friday, 23 May 1969: "Goldie B. Rayl - Goldie Bowers Rayl, 72, ofAshland, Ohio, and formerly of Rock Lick WV, died at 7p.m. Monday May 19, 1969 at Ashland. Shewas born September 6, 1896 in Marshall Co WV; a daughter of the late John and Anna Davis Bowers. Her husband, Charles Rayl, died in 1930. She had lived for several years in the WV area, whereshe was a member of the Rock Lick United Presbyterian Church. Surviving, are two sons: HowardRayl of Steubenville OH and Glenn Rayl of Mississippi; one brother, Herman R. Bowers of RockLick, and eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursdaywith burial in Rock Lick Cemetery."

THANKS Jerry - you too make our Chapter 'click'.

A Mrs. Marjorie Kahl Lawrence of Mulberry IN has sent us six copies of a history of her fatherentitled A STAR IN HIS RIGHT HAND. One copy has been placed in our Chapter's library & anotherin The Ohio Genealogical Society's library. Mrs. Lawrence has requested another copy be givento the Myers Pump Company and "to any of his relatives you know of - I do not know how else tomake the distribution". Mrs. Lawrence's father was Rev. Elmer Kahl, 1868-1948. Elmer was theson of Jonathan and Sarah Garn Kahl. This Kahl family lived in the Jeromesville area. Wewould very much like to see relatives get the last three copies - do you know of any - or areyou one? Let us know and we will mail them out. Mrs. Lawrence has done a fine job on thisbooklet and it will be enjoyed by any of this Kahl family. Jonathan and Sarah were the parentsof seven children before Elmer's birth: infant girl, infant boy (both died young), Miranda,Jane, Catherine/Katie, Ella (other not named).
