Grimaldi expands in Sardinia as tourists seek safer destinations closer to home
Like all carriers, and indeed all conscientious Europeans, we are distressed by the never-ending reports of the many thousands of migrants who continue to at-
tempt the dangerous Mediterranean crossing every week in search of asylum and a better life. Merchant shipping, despite inadequately equipped vessels and untrained crews, is often called upon to rescue men, women and children who would other-wise perish under the unforgiving waves.
Governments, rather than commercial vessels, should bear the brunt of this emer-gency effort, and for this reason we welcome the announcement that coastguard services backed by the European Union are set to be strengthened, hopefully as soon as this summer.
The instability, both economic and political, that has ravaged countries to the south and east of the Mediterranean has led holiday-makers to seek safer destinations closer to home. We have noticed this effect in Italy, where the tourist industry looks set to benefit this year – albeit for unfortunate reasons.
Responding both to this increased demand and also a desire for high quality, reliable services, the Grimaldi Group in April inaugurated a new link between Civitavecchia, near Rome, and the Sardinian port of Olbia. With the Cruise Olbia, a vessel capable of carrying 1,600 passengers and 2,400 linear metres of rolling cargo, we have substantially increased capacity on routes to the sun-kissed island. It was after all only three months previously that we kicked off the Olbia-Livorno line (where the frequency has been doubled to two daily departures since June). In additional to the Zeus Palace we have placed the ro-pax unit Cruise Smeralda on the Livorno route, which boasts two restaurants, two bars, a swimming pool and a children’s playroom.
This is welcome news not only for tourists but also for the island’s economy. Trucking companies and local residents are already benefiting from cut-price tickets as well from a wider product selection.
In a sign that our investment is for the long term, we have founded, in partnership with agents, our own Cagliari-based subsidiary: Grimaldi Sardegna s.r.l., with a staff of around 30. We also plan to give local officer students valuable experience on board our fleet. You can read more about our Sardinia expansion inside this edition of Grimaldi News.
Elsewhere, we have taken delivery of the Atlantic Sail, the second of a series of five ‘G4’ vessels for Atlantic Container Line. The vessel’s innovative design increases ca-pacity for both rolling and containerized cargo while rendering loading and unloading easier thanks to wider and shallower ro/ro ramps and higher accommodation for oversize loads. She is also much more fuel-efficient than the ‘G3’ ACL ships – emis-sions per TEU will fall by around 65%. Her sistership, the Atlantic Star, was feted with an award in April at the annual Shippax ferry shipping conference. Other innovations include a transom stern, high efficiency rudder and single-screw fixed pitch propeller driven by a slow speed diesel engine.
ACL’s market share has started to grow thanks to the introduction of the ‘G4’ ves-sels. Customer acceptance has been excellent. At the end of June, the Atlantic Star loaded 2,800 TEU of containers, compared to 1,850 TEU on the fully utilized ‘G3’ vessel just the week before. With the ACL move to Grimaldi’s Antwerp terminal in July there will be new transshipment opportunities, enhancing market coverage with lower costs and faster transit times.
Further south, our expansion plans continue. In Greece, Grimaldi-controlled Minoan Lines has now acquired more than 47% of coastal operator Hellenic Seaways. It is our intention to take full control of the company, and we are therefore actively seek-ing out shareholders that are willing to sell. As with previous acquisitions, bringing Hellenic into the Grimaldi fold would be beneficial to both the local market, in that they would be plugged into one of the world’s most efficient ro/ro networks, and to Grimaldi’s existing customers, who would profit from an expanded port rotation.

atlantic Sail joins aCl fleet
On the March 31, 2016 the of-
ficial delivery ceremony of
the m/vessel “Atlantic Sail”
took place at the Hudong-Zhonghua
Shipbuilding in Shanghai (China). The
newbuilding, the second in a series of
five vessels in the “G4” f leet ordered
by ACL to replace their “G3” genera-
tion ships, has a length of 296 metres, a
beam of 37,60 metres and a gross ton-
nage of 100,430 tonnes.
The “Atlantic Sail” has an innovative
design, with an increased capacity both
for rolling and container freight, without
significant changes in terms of vessel
dimensions: she can load 3,800 TEUs,
28,900 square meters of rolling freight
as well as 1,300 cars. Its ro/ro ramps are
wider and shallower while the decks for
the accommodation of rolling freight
are higher (up to 7.4 metres) with fewer
columns, enabling much easier loading
and discharging operations of over-
sized cargo.
The “G4” vessels are more environmen-
tally friendly with emissions per TEU re-
duced by 65%. With a speed increase
of 10%, fuel consumption per TEU has
been reduced by no less than 50%. With
a 105% increased container capacity,
31% increased car capacity and 45%
increased ro/ro capacity the ACL G4s
- are faster, greener and more efficient
than their predecessors.
On April 5, 2016, the “Atlantic Sail” left
the Chinese shipyards and joined the
ACL f leet in early May and took its place
in the company’s transatlantic service,
between North Europe, the US and Can-
ada. The third and fourth G4 vessels will
be delivered by 2016 while the fifth one
in early 2017.

The Grimaldi Group was once again
named Supplier of the Year by Gen-
eral Motors (GM) during the 24th
annual Supplier of the Year awards cer-
emony held on the 10th of March 2016 at
Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan. Mary
T. Barra, Chairman & CEO of General
Motors Company, participated in the
event.
GM recognised 110 of its best suppliers
from 17 countries who have consistently
exceeded GM’s expectations, created
outstanding value, or brought new inno-
vations to the company. This year’s cer-
emony represented the most suppliers
GM has recognised since debuting the
Supplier of the Year event in 1992.
“We are focused on building positive sup-
plier relationships, bringing new, custom-
er-centric innovations to GM, and being
the OEM of choice among suppliers”, said
Steve Kiefer, GM Vice-President, Global
Purchasing and Supply Chain. “The com-
panies we recognise tonight not only have
brought innovation, they delivered it with
the quality our customers deserve”, Steve
Kiefer concluded.
GM’s 2015 supplier recognition repre-
sents a nearly 40% increase in the num-
ber of suppliers honored compared to 79
recipients in 2014. More than half of the
suppliers are repeat winners from 2014.
For the Grimaldi Group, this is the 15th
time it receives this prestigious award.
Winning suppliers were chosen by a
global team of GM purchasing, engineer-
ing, quality, manufacturing, and logistics
executives they selected based on per-
formance criteria in Product Purchasing,
Indirect Purchasing, Customer Care and
Aftersales, and Logistics.
“We take great pride in being one of the
major suppliers of General Motors, and
we are very pleased to be recognized
by GM for our performances”, said Ema-
nuele Grimaldi, President of Grimaldi
Euromed S.p.A. “This award recognizes
the hard work of our Group in providing
quality transportation services and we will
continue providing the highest level of ser-
vices”, concluded Emanuele Grimaldi.

During the 14th Annual Ship-pax Ferry Shipping Confer-ence, held from the 13th to the
15th of April onboard the m/vessel Silja Symphony, the new multipurpose ro/ro-Containership Atlantic Star was awarded for her innovative design that increases capacity without significantly changing the dimensions of the vessel. The Shippax award was handed over to the Danish Naval Architects Knud E. Hansen and to Guido Grimaldi, Corpo-rate Short Sea Shipping Commercial Di-rector of the Grimaldi Group. The Atlantic Star is of the G4 generation whose design incorporates ro/ro cargo amidships with containers being stowed in cells fore and aft of the central ro/ro section. The G4s are bigger, greener and more efficient than their predecessors. Their container capacity is more than doubled at 3,800 TEUs, with 28,900 square me-ters for rolling freight space and a car capacity of 1,300 units. The ro/ro ramps are wider and shallower than those in the G3 vessels and the ro/ro decks are
higher (up to 7.4 meters) with fewer col-umns, enabling much easier loading and discharge of oversized cargo. Emissions per TEU are reduced by 65%. The fleet continues to employ cell-guides on deck, a feature that will allow ACL to extend its enviable record: ACL ships have never lost a container over the side during the last 30 years. Moreover, the ACL G4 vessels feature a transom stern and high efficiency rud-der, as well as a single screw fixed pitch propeller which is directly driven by a
slow speed diesel engine.“This award is an important recognition for the innovative project of the G4 ves-sels, built to be bigger, greener and more efficient than their predecessors” stated Guido Grimaldi.
“The Atlantic Star is an extremely efficient vessel in terms of carrying capacity and fuel savings”, said Finn Wollesen Peters-en, Kund E. Hansen’s Managing Director.
“We are very proud to have been involved in this project. Winning this Shippax Award makes it even better”.

Grimaldi Lines appears as a Top-50 Com-pany according to Reputation Institute,
the world’s leading reputation-based research and advisory firm, in its Rep Trak Italy survey for 2016.The Group ranks 16th in the survey that Repu-tation Institute publishes every year after con-ducting assessments and studies on how the public views Italy’s best known companies. The Group, relying on its long and prestigious past, has also improved its score compared to last year.In a difficult and complicated economic envi-
ronment as the current one, the Group’s cor-porate reputation appears to be a higher value even when subject to different influences and volatility or, as quoted by experts, it is a “fluid” value to be cultivated with care and constant assiduity. In this sense, the Grimaldi Group follows ex-actly that philosophy, by providing efficient, reliable, innovative and high quality maritime services for the transport of freight and pas-sengers, by following a continuous process of identifying its customers’ needs and expecta-tions.

On the March 21, 2016 a cooperation
agreement protocol was signed
between the Technical Institute “Fon-
dazione Mo.So.S - Mobilità Sostenibile
(Sustainable Mobility) Sardegna” and
the Grimaldi Group, to promote mari-
time jobs among high school graduates.
The protocol was signed by Giovanni
De Pretis, President of ITS-Mo.So.S.,
and Guido Grimaldi, Corporate Short
Sea Shipping Commercial Director of
the Grimaldi Group, at the headquar-
ters of the Education Department of the
Sardinia Region.
The agreement foresees the embarka-
tion of six maritime officer students and
four engine officer students, chosen for
their academic merits, on-board ves-
sels of the Grimaldi f leet. The students
will be embarked for 12 months, in
order for them to complete the Course
and then get the Officer Certification.
The onboard training will consist of
three internships of four months each,
alternated with activity ashore, carried
out by ITS Mo.So.S, according to the
training programme for a total period
of two years.
“The signing of this protocol is a first and
important positive answer for young stu-
dents who are entering the labour mar-
ket and can do it through a qualifying
path, thanks to a recognised shipping
company”, stated Claudia Firino, Head
of the Public Education Dept of the Sar-
dinia Region.
“This is for us the beginning of a new and
exciting path in which we are further in-
creasing our presence in the training
sector. The Grimaldi Group is commit-
ted to promoting the relationship be-
tween schools and the industry”, stated
Guido Grimaldi.
Grimaldi SardeGna founded
In the framework of its strategy of strengthening its pres-ence in Sardinia, the Grimaldi Group has recently founded, in partnership with its historical agents Mec Shipping and Carimar, its own subsidiary called Grimaldi Sardegna srl. The new company is headquartered in Cagliari with operating offices, apart from the Sardinian capital, in the ports of Porto Torres and Olbia. With a staff of 30, the subsidiary will provide commercial and operational service management for the Group in Sardinia.
GRIMALDI SARDEGNA
agreement between itS-Mo.So.S. and the Group
Grimaldi. “Through this connection, the
Grimaldi Group aims at further supporting
the Sardinian economy, in particular the
tourist industry, thanks to the stipulation
of agreements with the local hotel indus-
try, as well as agreements to promote the
employment of young Sardinians like the
one recently signed with the ITS-Mo.So.S
technical institute”, he concluded.
Following its great success among cus-
tomers, the Livorno-Olbia service will
be doubled in June and its frequency,
already daily, will be increased to two
daily departures from both ports, with
a transit time of just eight hours. Flank-
ing the vessel Zeus Palace is the ro/pax
Cruise Smeralda, a unit capable of carry-
ing 1,500 passengers, accommodation
in 209 cabins and 181 reclining seats, in
addition to 2,100 linear metres of rolling
cargo and 110 accompanying cars (or
alternatively 570 accompanying cars.)
The vessel is fitted with a self-service
and an à la carte restaurant, two bars, a
swimming pool and solarium, a boutique,
a children’s playroom and slot machine
area.
Furthermore, on the Livorno-Olbia line,
in June the Grimaldi Group will deploy
a ro/ro unit of the “Eurocargo” class to
meet the needs of cargo customers. This
last generation vessel has a loading ca-
pacity of 4,000 linear meters of rolling
cargo, equivalent to about 300 trucks
and trailers, and will perform regular
departures both directions, thus ensur-
ing a continuity of service for transport
operators, even during summertime.

On the 21st of January a ceremo-
ny was held on board the m/
vessel “Grande Tema” during
its call at the port of Cotonou, in occa-
sion of the shipping from Antwerp of 12
new Terberg tugmasters destined to
Sobemap (Société Béninoise des Ma-
nutentions Portuaires of the port of Co-
tonou), for their stevedoring activities.
Attending the ceremony, among many
other authorities and media represen-
titives, were the Minister of Maritime
Economy Daumon Saka Patrick Yerima
Pierre, the Managing Director of the
Port of Cotonou, Naomie Azaria Houn-
houi, Managing Director of Sobemap,
Antoine Kouthon and Managing Direc-
tor of the Grlmaldi Benin, Giuliano Pet-
rellese.
The Minister of Maritime Economy ap-
preciated the great service provided
by Grimaldi, enhancing the Group’s
leading position in maritime transport
in the Port of Cotonou. Furthermore, the
Grimaldi Group has been chosen for the
shipment also for the second and third
lots of tugmasters which will be trans-
ported to Cotonou in next three months.
During the stay of the Grande Tema in
Cotonou, authorities were welcomed on
board by the Master Giuseppe Di Gen-
naro and had a tour of the vessel, from
which they were positively impressed.
The Grimaldi Group is a leader in ro/ro
maritime activities in Benin, with over
130 ship calls per year and approxi-
mately 150,000 vehicles discharged in
Cotonou.
Despite competitors on ground for the
ro-ro handling in the Port of Cotonou,
Grimaldi (through Ro-ro Terminal Benin,
the Grimaldi Group controlled ro/ro ste-
vedoring company), and Sobemap, the
Beninese public stevedoring company,
keep cooperating, exchanging views
and maintaining a great relationship.
This shows and strengthens once again
the reciprocal respect and friendship
between the Grimaldi Group and Au-
thorities in Benin, standing at the highest
level for over twenty years.

Grimaldi Group, a regular sponsor to Malta Red Cross
During the past four years, the Grimaldi Group has been a firm sponsor to the Malta Red Cross through the shipment of 12 units between ambu-
lances, patrol vehicles and trucks from the United Kingdom to Malta. Sullivan Maritime, the Malta general agent for the Group, support these initiatives by sponsoring the local charges. The Malta Red Cross was established on the 24th October 1991, and by Act of Parliament it was recognised as an autonomous voluntary Relief Society auxiliary to the Public Authorities and allowed to carry out its activities in the Maltese islands in accordance with the rules and principles of the International Red Cross movement.
On the 2nd of March an agreement was signed between the Head-master of the “Duca degli Abruzzi” Nautical Institute of Catania
(Sicily), Brigida Morsellino, the President of I.T.S -Mobilità Sostenibile Trasporti di Catania- Domenico Nicotra and Guido Grimaldi, Com-mercial Director of Short Sea Lines of the Grimaldi Group. The aim of the MoU is to create a strong agreement between the world of job and the school: in fact the agreement signed provides for the mutual cooperation activities in the field of training related to the shipping industry, port, logistics and industrial sectors. At the end of the ceremony a plate was uncovered entitling the navi-gation and simulation laboratory of the school to late Guido Grimaldi, founder of the Group.
Ceremony on board “Grande tema”
On April 4th 2016, the Group’s Portuguese Branch moved its headquarters to new premises located in the Santos
neighbourhood, one of the most fashionable and fastly grow-ing areas in central Lisbon. Grimaldi Portugal has purchased the entire second floor of a building located side by side with prestigious new constructions and historical ones. The 520 m2 premises were thoroughly refurbished after the pur-chase and represent another proof of the Group’s long standing commitment to the Portuguese trades to West Africa, South America and the Mediterranean, in addition to providing the 16-people Lisbon team with a state of the art working space.Grimaldi Portugal also own the Leixões sub-branch premises. The Grimaldi Group currently serves the Portuguese market with weekly calls to Deep Sea destinations from Lisbon and Leixões, and bi-weekly calls to Euro-Med ports through Setúbal.
