When I was installed as International President at Inter-national Convention in 2008, LaVerne Taylor Flanagan, Past Grand President, was the installing officer. I mourn her passing today because not only was she a kind-hearted and passionate sister, she was also one of the biggest influences on my Alpha Gamma Delta involvement after graduation.
It all started after my Senior Rededication service at Gamma Delta-Auburn University. LaVerne pulled me aside to talk and mentioned to me that she had heard I was moving to the Florence area in North Alabama. A new chapter had recently colonized at the Uni-versity of North Alabama. She asked me if I would be willing to help with this new chapter. And when LaVerne asked you to do something, you always answered ‘yes.’ Besides, I would be new to the area and thought this would be a good way to meet other Alpha Gams. The rest is history. I've been volun-teering for Alpha Gamma Delta ever since.
To express my gratitude for the world that LaVerne helped open for me would be difficult.
But what I can do is work to continue her vision for a better Fraternity. She always believed that living our Ritual was the best way to ensure Alpha Gam-ma Delta’s success and asked for each sister and chapter to be the best she could be.
She also knew an important component to the Fraternity’s success would be continual growth. More than 20 chapters were installed in her tenure, during a challenging time for all Greek life organizations. Today, extension is once again a primary focus for us. I am so excited to announce these upcoming colonizations: St. Joseph’s College in New York this spring, University of South Carolina in fall 2012 and Uni-versity of Southern California in fall 2013. Thank you to all of the sisters who are giving support to these extension ef-forts! The colonization of new chapters is always an exciting time in the life of the Fraternity.
A couple of weeks ago, Interna-tional Council met for the first time in the new building. We enjoyed touring our new home and spending time with staff. We were especially excited to have lunch with sisters from
Beta Delta-Indiana Univer-sity as they utilized the new training area for their chapter officer training. I personally sat quietly in the new boardroom just thinking of all the past presidents who had given many hours leading our organization. Their leadership brought direc-tion and vision to this Fraterni-ty we hold dear. Upon return-ing home, I once again opened the Christmas card LaVerne had sent me only days before her illness. She bragged about her family, as all grandmothers do, and she mentioned the con-tinued success of Gamma Delta Chapter with a couple of recent news items. Lastly, she spoke of her excitement about the direction Alpha Gamma Delta is moving. I will miss LaVerne’s straightforward manner of ad-dressing situations and her nod of approval she occasionally sent to me. LaVerne was a true sister who lived with Purpose.

Alpha Gamma Delta welcomed 65 women into the Theta Psi Chapter at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, on December 4, 2011. Theta Psi Chapter is the 186th installed chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta.
Liz Harriss York, International Vice President-Extension, served as the Install-ing Officer and Toastmistress for the Instal-lation Banquet.
“I enjoyed getting to know the exemplary young women of our chapter at Austin Peay State University,” Liz said. “Their commitment to values and high personal expectations instills confidence that this chapter will be successful.”

it will be providing the College Panhellenic with a complementary program presented by The Leadership Institute-Women with Purpose, Inc. Julie Waitman Cretin, Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation Executive Direc-tor, also announced that the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation would be giving a $1,000 scholarship to a member of the chapter next fall.
Collegians from Gamma Xi-Murray State University and Theta Tau-Belmont Uni-versity served as members of the initiating team. One special sister traveled all the way from Wisconsin to Clarksville to pin her Pearl Sister at the Initiation Service. Lauren Carlson, Leadership Consultant, has been working with the chapter since its inception. “Each one of the women pos-sesses different skills that as a whole will greatly benefit the membership of Alpha
Gamma Delta,” Lauren said. “They desire to spread the positive image of Alpha Gam, not only in their community, but also across the country through service, com-munity involvement and scholastic achieve-ment. Watching [the chapter’s] growth has been an amazing experience.”

Guided by the theme “Advancing Sorority Together,” delegates, inter/national presi-dents, executive directors and editors of the 26 member organizations of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) gathered in late October for the 2011 annual meeting in Austin, Texas. At the event, attendees discussed the evolving higher education stu-dent population, learned about the impor-tance of an organization’s brand promise and reviewed overall NPC statistics in the areas of initiation, retention, scholarship and philanthropy.
Alpha Gamma Delta was represented at the conference by our NPC delega-tion including Rie Gerah Hoehner, Cinda Zehner O’Connor and Tricia Barber. Jackie Brannon Stutts, International President, and Stephannie Sack Bailey, Executive Director, also attended this event.
Important accomplishments during this biennium include a total review of NPC bylaws, a partial review of the Unanimous Agreements and a report on the results of the Measurable Outcomes Committee.
National Panhellenic Conference Update The following legislation was passed at the meeting:
• UA Calendar Rule: Clarification that the MRABA (binding agreement) rule applies from one Formal Recruitment period to the next, not exactly 365 days. It's roughly one year. • UA GPA Minimum: College Panhel- lenics cannot set a minimum GPA stan- dard for Potential New Members (PNMs) that is lower than the lowest GPA minimum required by any member group on the campus. • UA Hazing Policy: Changed from Resolution to a Unanimous Agreement, and adds to the definition of hazing that you can't make anyone ingest food, beverage, drugs and alcohol. • UA Polling: College Panhellenics can- not require chapters to submit inter- nal, private or confidential documents.
• UA Women in Men’s Recruitment: Agreement that members refrain from participation in men’s fraternity recruitment and encourages College Panhellenics to adopt a policy that restricts Panhellenic women from participating in any men’s fraternity recruitment events, pursuant to the provisions of Title IX of the
Education Amendment of 1972 confirming the single sex designation of women’s sororities. • UA Sovereign Rights Protection: Agreement that any College Panhellenic policy that infringes upon member groups' rights is null and void.

LaVerne Taylor FlanaganGamma Delta-Auburn University
Grand President 1983-1991Entered Chapter Grand on January 2, 2012
A natural leader, LaVerne Taylor Fla-nagan, Gamma Delta-Auburn University, served on Grand Council (now called Inter-national Council) for 15 years, including seven years as Grand Vice President-Alum-nae and eight years as Grand President. In addition to serving on Grand Council from 1976-1991, LaVerne previously volun-teered as a National Panhellenic Confer-ence (NPC) delegate, Foundation Trustee, International Panhellenic Committee member and Gamma Delta Alumnae Chap-ter President. LaVerne wore the Crescent of Epsilon Pi with Diamonds.
Although more than 20 collegiate chapters were installed during her tenure as Grand President, LaVerne’s presidency was a chal-lenging time for fraternities and sororities, as public opinion focused on social issues and student abuses. In her keynote address
at the 1991 International Convention, LaVerne challenged every member and chapter to focus on academic standards, true sisterhood, values and ethics. She believed focusing on the Fraternity’s Ritual was important for Alpha Gamma Delta to be successful.
“Our Ritual is the glue of continuity which binds us together through generations,” she said. “By living closer to our Ritual and our Purpose, by adhering to the vows we took
at the time of our Initiation, by living up to the ideals and values given to us by our Founders, our lives would be enriched, our goals more easily reached, the negativism of the media and many universities and college faculty and administrators would be dispelled.”
LaVerne was also an active volunteer in her local community where she was an officer in the Women’s Club of Auburn, Medical Auxiliary, Gardeners Club and Auburn United Way Board. In addition to serving on several church committees, she taught Sunday school for many years.
We will deeply miss and always appreciate LaVerne’s heartfelt commitment to the Fraternity.

What does Live with Purpose mean to you? Sure, you know it’s a part of Alpha Gamma Delta’s new brand (at least, we hope you knew that…if
not, well, now you do!). But how does it relate to your everyday life? Does living a life of Purpose feel obtainable? It’s easier than you probably think. We bet you are already living with Purpose, just like the Alpha Gams you
will read about on the following pages. Living with Purpose can be as simple as being there for a sister during a difficult time to taking on a new venture
that makes an impact. Even in the smallest of ways, you can make a dif-ference, and that’s truly what living with Purpose is all about. So what will
your impact be? How will you pursue your own purpose?

It began with a dare, if you can believe it, on Halloween night in 2006. Kathy Gronowick Johanson, Iota-University of Wash-ington, and her best friend Stacy Lill sat down for a few glasses of wine at a local restaurant with their husbands. Stacy’s hus-band, Greg, owns a winery in Seattle, and Kathy’s husband, Bob, had also previously worked in the wine industry, so naturally, the conversation quickly turned to the difficulties of starting and running a winery. It was nonchalantly called a “man’s business,” which perked up the ears of the two successful wives at the table.
“We both looked at each other like, ‘Are you seriously saying that to us?’” Kathy said. “We said, ‘You know what, we’re go-ing to start our own winery, and it’s going to be for women, by women and, by the way, we’re going to donate all profits to charity.’”
To which the husbands replied, “Yeah. Sure. Like that is going to work.” The dare was on the table, and Kathy and Stacy couldn’t help but accept.
O Wines delivered its first bottle to the shelf in March of 2008. And they were very serious about donating 100 percent of their net profits to charity, even if that made things more complicated. Combining their love of education, Kathy and Stacy decided all of the net profit would be put into scholarship funds for each state O Wines was sold in. Starting in their home state in Wash-ington, they partnered with the College Success Foundation, which was originally founded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The two women provided their criteria to the organization (low in-come, high potential youth) who then collected all applications, ana-lyzed each essay and eventually, selected O Wines’ first scholarship recipient, Angel Paullin. She, like all Washington recipients of an O Wines scholarship, received $20,000 up front for her college tuition. Kathy and Stacy, along with the College Success Founda-tion, then worked to secure additional institutional and Pell Grants for Angel, providing her with a full ride to Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington. Today, Angel is a senior, majoring in pre-medical. It’s her goal to become a doctor and open a free clinic for children in Rwanda some day.
Now, O Wines is sold in seven states: Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Arizona and Hawaii. Each state has its respective foundation that manages and awards the O Wines scholarships, which range in amount. Since March of 2008, O Wines has pro-vided 40 scholarships to low income students.
“For me, and for Stacy, it is incredibly rewarding to know that you have the potential to change lives. And it’s through a bottle of wine!” Kathy said.
They hope to continue to expand, with an ultimate goal of offering O Wines in every U.S. state. For now though, Kathy and Stacy are busy promoting the brand, building their scholarship funds, mentor-ing young students and inspiring other women to start their own charities.
How fitting it is that the “O” stands for opportunity!

Each year, Indiana University’s business students have the opportunity to compete in the PricewaterhouseCoopers xACT Case Competition, one of the nation’s leading case competitions for accounting and business students. It’s a pretty big deal, both at Indiana University, and at other campuses around the United States. For one, members of the winning team receive a significant amount of money and could be selected to present at the national competition in New York. Secondly, it’s a perfect addition to a business student’s résumé.
However, it’s an even bigger deal when you are a part of the first all-female team to win the Indiana University competition. It’s especially a big deal when four of the five winning team members are Alpha Gams!
Rachel Grossfeld, along with Beta Delta Chapter sisters Chandlar Smith, Ivana Huang and Bridget Bechtel (pictured below), had less than two weeks this fall to research an assigned accounting issue and develop a 12-minute presentation. Rachel took the lead for the team, spending over 60 hours preparing for the presentation, while still completing her normal coursework and fulfilling her Alpha Gam responsibilities.
Being busy is nothing new to Rachel, who is triple majoring in accounting, finance and technology management.
“I spend a lot of time researching the strategy we were going to use and meeting with professors to get their thoughts to be sure that our strategy wasn’t too risky,” Rachel said. “It was hectic to say the least!”
The team’s hard work and dedication paid off with their first place finish. Unfortu-nately, Rachel’s team wasn’t among the top five chosen to present in New York City for the national competition. But if they are all eligible to compete in next year’s competition, you better believe this team of Alpha Gams will be the one to beat.

It was always her dream to one day become an archeologist. Now, as a staff archaeologist sta-tioned at the Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, Susan White, Gamma Beta-Florida State Uni-versity, has certainly exceeded her goal. Though she’s thrilled with the end result of her many years of hard work, she credits her unusual jour-ney with the many defining moments that have made her who she is today. It was a journey, she says, that began with Alpha Gamma Delta.
“Alpha Gam gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams of becoming an archaeologist,” Susan said. “It started with possessing the poise and confidence after graduation to become a flight attendant for two years to save money to partici-pate in an early Roman dig in Italy.”
Returning back to the United States, Susan spent the next few years digging in the dirt during the week to reach her credentials as an archaeology technician. On the weekends, she’d brush off the dirt and set her shovel aside to work as a model and freelance makeup artist with the beauty company, Lancôme.
The generosity of the Alpha Gamma Delta Foun-dation and its Foundation Graduate Scholarship took her to graduate school at the University of Florida to obtain her master’s degree in anthropology. Since then, Susan has had many titles, including Assistant State Archaeologist and Sarasota County Archaeologist, that have taken her across the country and even overseas. Even within the field of archaeology, her duties have varied from preserving historical sites to educating youth about the importance of archae-ological resources. Combined, these collective experiences have shaped Susan into an extremely well-rounded, multi-talented and inspirational woman.
“I want to show women that you can be creative in your job choices, and that every choice can become an opportunity for growth,” she said. “And I feel both excitement and awe at how much my life’s purpose has echoed that of Alpha Gam’s Purpose.”

The Beauty in Service
Last winter, the small campus of High Point University in North Carolina was rocked by the sudden death of Alpha Gamma Delta senior Cassie Hill as a result of a brain aneurysm.
“She was so full of life,” said Lauren Ignozzi, Cassie’s close friend and Alpha Gam sister. “She was always there for any of her sisters.”
Stunned, the members of Gamma Eta Chapter pulled together to help one another through their pain and grief. It was important to them to find a way to honor Cassie’s memory. When students from Cassie’s project management class approached the chapter about organizing a two-mile memorial run for Cassie, members eagerly jumped at the opportunity.
“She was so full of life.
She was always there for any of her sisters."
The turnout for the event was extraordinary, and all proceeds from the run went to the Cassie Hill Memorial Fund, which was started by a few alumnae from Gamma Eta Chapter to raise money for a scholarship in Cassie’s honor.
“We were all there, wearing our red brain aneurysm ribbons to support her. She impacted us so much, and it was encouraging that people just dropped what they were doing to be there,” Lauren said.
This April (the month of Cassie’s birthday), the chapter will once again gather with members of the High Point commu-nity to celebrate Cassie’s life. It’s the perfect opportunity for Gamma Eta Chapter members to be there for one another, and in a way, a special time for Cassie to be there for them, too.

If it wasn’t for Alpha Gamma Delta, Erin Hatley, Gamma Zeta-University of Memphis, might not have ever made it to the Miss America stage to represent her home state of Tennessee.
“It was actually an alumna who encouraged me to compete in a local pageant, the Miss Collierville Scholarship Pageant,” Erin said. “They needed more contestants, and she knew I had a background in singing.” When Erin was crowned Miss Tennessee in June 2011, a whole new set of doors opened for her and her passion for volunteerism. Since she began volunteering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as a teen, it has been Erin’s goal to inspire others to service their communities, and so, it made perfect sense to choose volunteerism as her personal platform.
Though her duties of Miss Tennessee kept her very busy, Erin still made time to travel over 70,000 miles to speak to over 40,000 schoolchildren about citizenship and making your community a good place to live. Additionally, Erin coordinated a Teen Volunteer Fair for more than 300 teens in the Memphis area.
Erin’s personal platform, talent and charisma landed her among the top 10 finalists for the Miss America pageant in January. After crowning the next Miss Tennessee this sum-mer, Erin will be heading back to the University of Memphis to finish up her bachelor’s degree in marketing management.
“For me, my championship for volunteerism doesn’t stop here with my reign," Erin said. "I really wanted to share with others, that yes, you can actually make a difference. You can be a catalyst for change and for helping others."

Beta Delta–Indiana University Beta Delta Chapter uses the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose to live out our daily values. We continue to hold truth inviolable, sincerity essential and kindness invaluable daily by collaborating with the Panhellenic and Greek community at Indiana University. Throughout the past year, the chapter has invited members of new fraternities and sororities on campus to meet our women and get to know the other members better. As a part of the larger Panhellenic community, Alpha Gamma Delta is a collaborative chapter that is known for being sincere and kind.-Katherine Reed
Gamma Omicron–Eastern Kentucky UniversityGamma Omicron Chapter holds truth inviolable because the love and care that each sister has for one another is an unbreakable bond. We help each other grow every day by providing support for one another. Sincerity essential is one of the biggest aspects each woman shares with one another. We believe honesty is one of the best characteristics a person can have because it builds relation-ships with others. We show kindness not only to our sisters but to our peers as well. We believe a smile or a simple hello can impact a person’s day. Alpha Upsilon–Central Michigan UniversitySisters are always willing to support one another in their events whether it is Greek related or not. This past year, we have had sisters compete in beauty pageants, play intramural sports on campus and even give presentations to our city council to better the Greek community. We strive to attend our sisters’ functions to show that we care for one another and all the activities in which sisters take part. Not only do our sisters try to support and respect one another, but we reach out to other organiza-tions on campus as well. We attend other Greek organization's philanthropy events and always try to reach out to other groups when they are in a time of need. This year our chapter was even recognized as Central Michigan University’s number one sorority on campus.-Kirsten Grzegorczyk Gamma Beta–Florida State University Our chapter is able “to hold truth inviolable, sincerity essential, kindness invaluable” through the week long process of Formal Recruitment. We were able to build relationships with these new women based on these principles. At the end of the process, our chapter initiated 69 new sisters. Gamma Iota–Mercer University The women of Gamma Iota Chapter are some of the kindest and most sincere students on our university’s campus. Within our chapter, we have made it a point to create an honest, respect-ful and friendly environment for all of our sisters. Our attitude of respect extends to those outside the chapter as well. Many of our sisters are members of the Panhellenic Council, and our sisters make it a point to be kind and friendly to all students, both Greek and non-Greek. Our chapter’s annual Hug Day is just one example of spreading kindness to our fellow classmates. -Mallory Dyal

Gamma Psi–University of North AlabamaGamma Psi Chapter is a very tight knit group of women, and we strive to be as close as possible. In our chapter, women find sup-port in the fact that they can always let their true personality shine around their sisters. There is a bond of trust in our sisterhood that cannot be broken. We realize that everything we say or do is reflected back on the Fraternity, so we are always certain to be truthful and kind with our words. Zeta Upsilon–Northern Michigan University The sisters of Zeta Upsilon Chapter hold these values so dear to our hearts that they are easily recognized by potential new members going through recruitment. This fall, we had eight new members join our chapter after Formal Recruitment. We were the only chapter on campus to meet quota, and then five more women joined our chapter through Continuous Open Recruitment. We believe this is because during recruitment we are sincere, kind and gave potential new members the honest truth about the experience that Alpha Gam has given us. Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter (GRAC) was once again recognized as bronze level do-nors for the local Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk. We also continued with our annual holiday party, gift swap and donations to Interact of Wake County, a local women’s shelter. In March, we had a special guest, North Carolina Secretary of State, Elaine Folk Marshall, Alpha Xi-University of Maryland, with whom we were able to celebrate her Distinguished Citizen Award. GRAC celebrated our “Seasons of Sisterhood” with a luncheon and pre-sentation on the houses of Gamma Epsilon-University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an emphasis on the chapter’s first house, “The Little Brown House.” “The Little Brown House” was condemned but has been rescued and is undergoing restoration as a historical landmark. We finished our year with officer installa-tions and a potluck supper.-Charity-Anne Metz Schuller
Columbia, SC Alumnae ClubIn July, the Columbia, SC Alumnae Club held an interest meeting to get the club active again. Numerous members attended and dis-cussed plans for the coming year. Greater Portland Area Alumnae ClubMarch found us at the height of fashion, American Girl style! Together with Gales Creek Camp we hosted an American Girl Fashion Show raising funds for not only the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation but also Gales Creek, a camp especially for children with diabetes. International Reunion Day (IRD) in April was hosted at the Tualatin Country Club, and with over 100 alumnae and Phi-Oregon State University collegians, it was a wonderful cel-ebration of our sisterhood! The new year kicked off with a brunch at the home of Bev Swanson as we prepared for this fantastic year ahead of us.-Ellen Wenzel
Old Dominion Alumnae ClubOld Dominion Alumnae Club had an amazing start to the year in September with an Alpha Gam Always event. We had a great turn-out with over 20 sisters, with quite a few sisters who were new to
the area or coming to their first event in a while. We played sister bingo and learned about new sisters or learned something new about someone we already knew! In October, we celebrated Foundation Month and raised over $400 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation through a Pampered Chef fundraiser and had a great time! Also in October, we helped “Defeat Diabetes: One Step at a Time” at the Na-tional Capital Area Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes at National’s Stadium in Washington, D.C. with our team of walkers and event volunteers. In November, we spread out from Springfield to Sterling to Arling-ton, Fairfax and D.C. at Alpha Gam in the Neigh-borhood events, enjoying each other’s company at dinners. We’re looking forward to all of the great events planned for 2012!

Meet Sue
sister spotlight
For the past 22 years, Sue Stevens Kocienski, Xi-Illinois Wesleyan University, has dedicated countless hours to lead and mentor the women of Delta Pi-San Francisco State University.
Sue has served Delta Pi Chapter in several capacities over the years but spent the most time as the chapter’s New Member/Alpha Experience Advisor. “An alumna interviewed me back in 1990, and I told her that I would advise for a year and then see how it went. Then I found that working with the collegians was really great,” Sue said. “It is the students themselves that inspired me to keep advising!”
During Sue’s first year as the New Member/Alpha Experience Advisor, the new member class presented her with a wooden squirrel figurine, complete with all of their signatures on the back, to express their appreciation for her time, wisdom and compassion. Since then, it has been a tradition for the new member class to present her with a squirrel trinket of some kind after completing their new member programming.
Although Sue’s squirrel collection has grown over the years, those given to her by past new member classes hold a special place in her heart.
Sue is also an active member of her local Smocking Arts Guild of America chapter, a nonprofit organization for sewing enthu-siasts. When she is not advising the newest members of Delta Pi Chapter, she is busy knitting caps for babies at the neonatal unit at her local hospital.
It’s no surprise, with her commitment to service, that her favorite line of the Purpose is, “To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world's work in the community where I am placed.”

Exercise: Exercising isn’t just about maintaining your weight. It’s a perfect way to relieve stress, and that’s an extremely important part of being healthy. A bonus: exercise releases “feel good chemicals” that improve your mood. It can be as simple as bundling up and taking a walk around your neighborhood.
Catch some zzz’s: When we’re busy, sleep can be the first thing to go. With a little time management and self-discipline, you can get yourself those seven to eight recommended hours of shut-eye. And those gray winter days can be perfect for a nap! A short (10-30 minute) afternoon nap can help you re-energize.

Relax: With work, class, family, appointments and meetings, you’re busy! Even if you enjoy it, everyone benefits from some time off. Read a book or a magazine, sleep in on the weekend or take a yoga class. Relaxation allevi-ates stress and will leave you with calm energy.
Redecorate: When it’s gray outside, make it bright inside! Add new splashes of color to your room or home with recovered lamp shades (learn how!) or fun pillows. As the excitement of the holidays wears down and the snow continues to pile up (for most of us anyway!), even the best of us can get a little down. Here are a few steps to beat the winter blues while you wait for spring to arrive:
1 Treat yourself: Winter often seems endless. Having something to look forward to can keep you motivated and help the chilly weeks fly by. Plan something that is exciting to you—a weekend trip, a day at the spa, a girls’ night out or a sporting event.
3 Get some sun (but not without wearing sunscreen!): Sunlight pro-vides you with Vitamin D, which helps to improve your mood, maintain healthy and strong bones and strengthen your immune system. So put on some sunscreen and take that walk!
