Principal’s Message

The one true constant in schools, life, and indeed the universe, is change. As the new principal of Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, I bid you warm winter greetings and I wish all Royal families success as we begin the journey through second semester. I would be remiss, if I did not take this opportunity to say thank you to Mr. Mike Jellema, for his many years of service, support, and leadership in our school, as principal. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly, to build great capacity in Queen Elizabeth’s most vital resource, it’s students and staff. His impact will be felt for years to come, and we are in his debt.

During Mr. Jellema’s last week, our semester ended with exams and final assessments. Royals worked hard, and the fruits of their labour were visible on report cards that were distributed on February 2nd in Homeroom. Please ensure you have reviewed the report card with your child. Results from semester one courses were encouraging and we look forward to continued success for our students. Results from the Ministry English 12 exam, will be accessible to students on the Ministry web site at www.bced.gov.ca/exams early in March. If you have any questions regarding your child’s achievement, please contact the subject teacher.

Much has already happened this semester, and you should be inquiring with your child or children daily about what they’ve been learning. As a teacher, a school leader, and fellow parent, I know how challenging it can be to get much more than “fine” from our sons and daughters when they come home and we ask how school was. But, overwhelming research shows that students whose parents are engaged in their learning, achieve more.

Principal’s Message continued:

You should also know that our counsellors have begun meeting with students to discuss require-ments and courses for next year. It is vital to have parental involvement in this process. Each year of secondary school brings different options and opportunities for students. The information that we gather from the course selection process enables us to build the timetable for the next school year. There are very limited chances to make changes later, so students are advised to choose courses carefully now. If you have specific questions about programs and options for your child, feel free to contact your son or daughter’s counsellor here at the school.

Our Grade 12 students have begun making their plans for their lives after graduation. Many are applying to universities, colleges, and other programs. Please contact our Counselling and Careers departments to seek further information about options and particular programs. Many of our grade 12s are also applying for scholarships at this time. Please have your son/daughter check with the Careers department for assistance in this regard.

Also, we welcome several new staff members to our school. Ms. Karen Friesen, Ms. Rupinder Grewal, Ms. Jennifer Hodgson, Ms. Varinder Maur, Ms. Sarah Munro, Ms Tamara Robson, and Ms. Rupinder Saini have all joined the Royal Team for second semester. If they are working with your child, please do offer them welcome.

Lastly, I mentioned change as the only true constant in my introduction. New staff (and a new prin-cipal) are far from the only changes that our school will see in the months and years to come. On the horizon are new grad requirements for our future grade 12 students, new Ministry literacy and numeracy assessments for all royals before they graduate, and new technological tools coming soon to our school. Queen Elizabeth will also change the way we communicate your child’s achievement and course schedules to you shortly. Please do inquire with us at the school for more details.

I look forward to learning more about the Queen Elizabeth school community, and your sons and daughters in the days and weeks to come. Please do contact me at the school if you have any questions or concerns.

Graham Magnusson

Parent Parking, Drop Off and Pick Up

Parents are asked NOT to drop off or pick up students directly in front of the school’s main en-

trance/corridor or along King George Boulevard. For safety, we ask you that you move along to the

west side of the parking lot (past the Portable) or park your vehicle in the parking lot to ensure

steady flow of traffic coming off King George Boulevard.

Please do not line up on King George Boulevard, in either the slow lane and/or the

curb lane, as this is obstructing traffic flow on King George Boulevard.

We thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation!

The School Act gives parents the right, through a PAC (Parent Advisory Council), to assume an advisory role in every school. The

PAC is the officially recognized collective voice of parents and guardians of the school. PACs are forums within each school

community to discuss matters affecting their children's school and the education of these children. Parents’ voices are a

tremendous value to the school. They offer a wealth of ideas and support in the challenges that face all public schools. PACs

strive to represent the diversity within their communities and contribute to the benefit of all students by providing

opportunities to educate and inform parents about the school and openly discussing parents' concerns and aspirations for the

school.

Who Can Become a Member of PAC? — All parents and guardians of students registered in the school are able to

participate as a member of the PAC.

How Does a PAC Work? — Through the parents in the school, PACs communicate with their parent community gathering

and discussing issues of importance regarding their school in order to adequately advise those that influence their school. In

addition to monthly PAC meetings, communication may also be done through newsletters, telephone, email and websites so

that all parents have the opportunity for input. PACs, with strong participation from parents, have an important influence on

life at the school and the feelings the community has toward the school and education. There is strong evidence that increased

parent involvement in the school results in increased student achievement, accomplishment, satisfaction, and bonding all of

which result in decreased dropout rates and better citizen.

The Purpose of a PAC can be:

to provide parents with the opportunity to gain greater understanding of the school;

to assist the SPC in carrying out its function;

to give input into school- based decisions;

to participate in goal setting;

to unify efforts of the school community towards the goal of quality education;

to monitor and review school rules and conduct, the safety programs, the educational programs; learning

materials, equipment and the school building;

to educate parents;

to advocate equal educational opportunities for all students;

to liaise with other education partners and organizations; and

to provide methods to resolve problems between the school and community by directing parents and students to

the Advocacy project.

Your Involvement! — Parents are encouraged and invited to bring forth issues, suggestions, or concerns relating to the

meeting and enhancement of the needs of your school community.

These issues can be brought forth by contacting a PAC executive member, sending a letter to the school addressed to a

member of the PAC executive, or attending a PAC meeting.

*The PAC is NOT a forum to discuss individual students and/or staff problems or conflicts*

Next PAC meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 16, 2018

If you would like to help with the DRY GRAD, please come to our next meeting on Monday, March 5th at 6 pm

In QE Library or contact Edna by phone 604-617-4278 or by email at [email protected]. Parents are welcome to come

and help organize fundraising opportunities to help lower the cost of the Dry Grad Boat Cruise tickets.

The QE Dry Grad event will once again be a fabulous boat cruise. This year’s cruise will take place aboard the beautiful Queen of Diamonds, sailing

out of False Creek into the Inner Harbour and out past the West Vancouver shoreline.

On June 22nd, immediately following the Dinner/Dance at Newlands, grads will be shuttled by bus to the dock at 750 Pacific Boulevard where they

will board the boat for a four hour cruise. While on board, students will enjoy dancing, a photo booth and much more. There will also be a mock

casino featuring Texas Hold’em Poker and Blackjack. Each student will be given “play money” to use. Grads will be served food, soft drinks and hot

chocolate. Safe School Liaison staff will act as chaperones as well as boat security.

At 5:00 am, the boat will return to the harbor and students and chaperones will be boarded onto the buses and driven to QE school parking lot,

where their parents will pick them up (buses are expected to arrive at the school at approximately 6:00 am).

PLEASE NOTE: school premises will not be open for students!

School rules will apply on the boat cruise.

Students must attend the Dinner/Dance if they wish to go on the boat cruise.

If bringing a guest, students must show their approval form before they purchase a guest ticket.

No smoking, alcohol or drugs allowed. Students will be searched and any alcohol or drugs found will be confiscated and the student will be

refused entrance to the boat.

Backpacks or large bags will not be allowed on the buses. A small bag for a change of shoes or sweater will be permitted and will be subject to

a search.

If students wish to change out of their formal wear before the cruise, they must do so at Newlands, and a parent must come to pick up their

clothes prior to the buses leaving, as they cannot be left on the bus or taken on the boat — no exceptions. We ask that all clothes to be

changed into be brought with the students at the beginning of the night.
