Today, we begin a new liturgical year, as we celebrate the 1st Sunday of Advent. We are reminded that it’s time to prepare for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. Like parents awaiting the birth of their first child, it’s a matter of waiting, hoping and dreaming. We

are called to step back and reflect on who are we preparing for? The Scripture readings remind us to be watchful and alert, to pay attention to our surroundings and to be patient. Let us enter this Advent season with open hearts, so that when Christmas arrives, we will be ready.

My appreciation goes out to Mark McCann and the Scouts of Troop 637. As part of his Eagle Scout Project, Mark was instrumental in helping to clean up the parking lot on 103rd and Central Park by picking up the debris and pulling the weeds and making the lot look cleaner and more appealing.

Today in the bulletin, you will find the Annual Finance Report for Queen of Martyrs for the Fiscal Year of 2016-2017. As you will see, we are doing okay. We have worked on a number of Capital Projects including a new roof on Vitha Hall and a new heating and air conditioning system as well as replacing a new steam boiler for the old school. Like anything else, finances are always an issue. The importance of using your Sunday weekend envelopes is vital to keep the parish operating. There are many other improvements that need to be made, but our resources are low. I am grateful to those parishioners who use their envelopes weekly. If everyone would do their part every Sunday, we could do more improvements. I would ask you to look over the report and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. The parish is not in debt, and I intend to keep it that way, but I need for you to do your part to keep us going. I want to thank our Finance Council and Cindy Cochran, our Operations Director for their support. I thank you for your continued generosity and support.

Thank you for those who attended the Parish Consultation meeting on Wednesday. Your comments and concerns were appreciated by the Priest Placement Board. It’s the beginning as we prepare for a new chapter for Queen of Martyrs Parish.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

The opening lines of today’s gospel seem to say it all. “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” I remember my mother always telling us to live each day as if it were your last. Would you be ready to meet the Lord today? What should you be doing to be better prepared to meet the Lord as we begin the season of Advent?

On a lighter note – Happy St. Nick’s Day this Wednesday! What will your stocking hold – a lump of coal or a sweet treat? How can you improve your chances to avoid that lump of coal?

Queen of Martyrs Sixth Graders Participate in “The Living Rosary”

Students in Mrs. Robin Creevy’s Class prayed the Rosary in a service attended by parents, parishioners, and classmates. The students created posters of the mysteries that they displayed during the service. The students were grateful to share this beautiful rosary with their classmates and community.

The sixth graders also walked to Mercy Chapel at Mother McAuley High School to share “The Living Rosary” with the nuns that reside at Mercy Circle. The students enjoyed spending time with the sisters and taking part in this spiritual faith filled celebration!

Mission Trip All You Need Is Love

“This being my second year in Harlan, I had really high expectations for the week, and by the end I feel as if I have gone above and beyond those expectations. Throughout the course of the week, I was on a roofing site and truly saw God everywhere, whether it was the view of the mountains, on the hour car ride every day, or the

face of the homeowners when they saw us shingling the roof. I could just feel God’s strong presence. Next year, I hope to come back to Harlan again and make many new friends as well as become closer to God.” —Matt
