The 7th FIP Polo World Cup Tournament The 7th Federation of International Polo tournament was held in Chantilly, France from 9 t0 19 September 2004. The event was extremely well run. Two games per day were scheduled to be played and two days were marked as rain days. The weather was fantastic except when the English team played as the rain seemed to follow them, more on this later. The Australian team was represented by Brodie Donovan (4 goal), Robbie Ballard (3 Goal), Adam Tolhurst (4 Goal) and Jock Mackay (3 Goal) Day 1 Pakistan and Mexico. The first game of the tournament took on a carnival atmosphere with lots of flag waving and cheering from the supporters. It was a very close game and it could have gone either way. Pakistan won by one goal 13 - 12. Both teams had great support from there vocal and passionate fans.

England and Brazil The second game between England and Brazil was a thriller and was also the two teams that would meet in the final. Again this game was a close one but Brazil won it by 7 goals to 6. Brazil had great support from their fans and even had a band to play during the breaks. It was a great spectacle to see such passion and support from the fans

Day 2 France Vs Australia This was Australia’s opening match between the hosts, France. The French being the host team had good support from the home crowd. It was difficult to see the Aussie fans but I did manage to find James Ashton and Peter Yunghanns helping to support our team. Unfortunately the Aussie team just couldn’t find any form and were shown a good polo lesson from the French. The Aussie went down 11 goals to 3

USA Vs Chile The second match from day two saw the USA and Chile battle out yet another close game. Chile won by 9-8.

Day 3 Brazil Vs Pakistan

It was a rainy, wet and cold day. Both Pakistan and Brazil came into this game confident of winning. They had both won their first games and both had loyal, vocal fans to help fire their teams. Unfortunately for Pakistan the Brazilians passion and team spirit was at it’s peak and Brazil romped home 13 goals to 8.

England Vs Mexico The England Vs Mexico game was postponed after 2 chukkas due to torrential rain. The horses must have 48 hours to recover from each game, with this in mind the game was scheduled to be replayed on Day 7 the 16 September.

Day 4 Australia Vs USA Australia faced the USA after their defeat from the French. Once again the Aussies could find any form and were defeated 12 goals to 7

France Vs Chile

Both France and Chile had wins in their first matches. Chile had brought a huge crowd of supporters and their vocal support helped the Chilean team beat France by 12 goals to 6

Day 5 Brazil Vs Mexico

This was the worst day for weather. It was extremely cold and the drizzle continued all day with a torrential down pour just in time for the England and Pakistan match. The first game for the day was between Brazil and Mexico. Brazil looked to be the favorites to win but the fighting spirit of the Mexicans came through in the and they won by 9 goals to 8

England Vs Pakistan The England and Pakistan game started in windy and heavy rain. England already had a game postponed against Mexico and it would have been a nightmare for organizers if this one was also postponed. With the rain getting heavier it was decided to halt the game for ten minutes. The game was restarted but conditions were still bad. The Pakistan team were disadvantaged and the English took advantage, winning by 11 goals to 3

Day 6 Australia Vs Chile. Australia having lost both of their previous games only had their pride to play for. Although the Aussies started well the Chilean team hammered the Australians 19 goals to 5

France Vs USA. Both teams had everything to play for as either could qualify for the final. The French were better on the day and beat the USA by 7 goals to 5

Day 7 England Vs Mexico This game was the remainder of the game that was postponed from day 3. Only 3.5 chukkas remained and the rain gods didn’t follow England on this day. England dominated the game and won by 11 goals to 7

Day 8 This was a rest day and the members of the press were taken out to see some of the sites around Chantilly. Steeped in history and tradition Chantilly is a horse lover’s delight. The first site to be visited is the racetracks through Chantilly forest. Over 4.5 km of sand track is cut through the forest. The sand is mixed with Vaseline to stop it freezing in the winter so the tracks can be used all year round. Over 2500 horses are put through their training every day. The racetrack employs over 2000 people and is the biggest in the world.

Other site visited included Chantilly Chateau and the museum of the horse. The chateau is magnificent with one of the oldest library collections in the world, original works of art and stunning gardens. The museum of the living horse has displays of horsemanship, sculptures, paintings, carvings and much much more.

Day 7 England Vs Mexico This game was the remainder of the game that was postponed from day 3. Only 3.5 chukkas remained and the rain gods didn’t follow England on this day. England dominated the game and won by 11 goals to 7

Day 9 Semi Finals Brazil Vs France. There was a great turnout from the spectators with the home team playing the much-fancied Brazilians. France was hoping of a major upset against the Brazilians. Unfortunately for the French the Brazilians passion was on fire and Brazil played a great game to hammer the French by 9 goals to 4

England Vs Chile This was a well fought out game with the scores swinging on way then the other. England must have thought the rain god was on holiday as this was there first full match without rain. England won the game by 7 goals to 6 to go into the final.

The Final England Vs Brazil Both teams played extremely well through out the tournament. The Brazilian passionate and dedicated fans was a joy to see. The flags and musical band that followed the Brazil team sparked a fire in that really showed in the team spirit. The English quiet reserve and skill on the field made this game a real classic. Both teams had their chances to win the match with the lead going one way then the other. On the final whistle both teams were locked at 6 goals all. This took the game into a golden goal 7th chukka. Brazil looked as though it had won the match by winning an undefended penalty but the ball went wide and the game continued. England also won an undefended open goal penalty and missed. Nerves were beginning to show and it seemed that this match was going to go to an 8th chukka when Brazil managed to trickle the ball over the England goal line. This was a classic match and an exciting one to watch. The final two teams gave everything they had and was a worthy final for a well-run tournament.
