A rezoning applica-tion for 136 Leonard Street has become an issue with residents living in Johnson neighbour-hood.

The owner of the resi-dence, situated in an area which is zoned for single family dwellings, has come to council for approval of the addition of a second-ary suite.

The matter was discussed at the March 25 public

hearing, which saw verbal and written submission to council.

The property’s owner, Ernest Gamache, attended the public hearing and told council his thoughts on the secondary suite.

He responded to the ad-vertisement which had de-scribed the house already having a newly renovated suite.

Gamache said the listing wasn’t correct and that the newly renovated suite should not have appeared in the ad.

He also explained having

a secondary suite would be a positive change for the street and for the neighbourhood since ex-penses deferred could be used for maintaining and upgrading infrastruc-ture.

“I invited the neigh-bours to come over and look at the renovations,” Gamache said.

“It adds value to the property and to the neigh-bourhood.”

In response to the con-cerns about parking and safety, Gamache said he didn’t see there

being an issue.“Responsible renters

will be responsible driv-ers,” he said.

A letter was read, from Susan Maile and Dr. John Maile, who showed con-cern with safety on the street if the secondary suite is permitted.

“We are in � rm oppo-sition to the re-zoning application,” the letter read.

The letter also spoke to the suite being thought of as affordable housing, saying “[the house] has a price tag of

$365,000 so the suite will hardly fall into your cat-egory of affordable hous-ing.”

“Since the occupation of both levels of the house, there have often been extra cars parked on the street, forget problems with snow re-moval, what about child safety,” the letter contin-ued.

The letter also said a parking lot in front of the property is “un-sightly apart from the possibility of devalu-ation of surrounding

house properties.”The residents of

144 Leonard St., Kyle and Debbie Terlesky wrote two letters in response to the rezoning applica-tion.

“We write this letter to express our concern about the proposed amendment for rezoning 136 Leonard St.,” they said.

One of the issues they had was the notice regarding the rezoning being delivered the day before spring break.

JJ’s Classic Country to play Bluegrass Jamboree Jim Johnson (JJ as most of us know him) has been playing in a band since the age of 11. He’s had numerous bands over the years, one being his family band known as JJ & Kountry Kin who were together for years until having to fold due to a move by Jim to Eckville, AB. This is where Jim met up with Dick Handley from Red Deer, AB. Dick is a much sought after bass player, so he blends in well with Jim’s band. Also, Jim met up with Tim and Pat Frayn of Rocky Mountain House, AB. Tim is a great lead guitar player/vocalist and wife Pat a singer/song writer as well as rhythm guitar player. Together the four of them complete this great toe-stompin’, country singin’ band called JJ’s Classic Country. Jean Stimpson is proud to be part of the corps of volunteers in Quesnel. She says every volun-teer should be honoured for the tireless work they do for a host of organizations, activities and events that make Quesnel a great place to live.

“Recognizing one Volunteer Citizen of the Year is wonderful, however celebrating all volun-teers would be even better,” she said.

Stimson is one of six nominees for the title of Volunteer Citizen of the Year 2012 and for good reason.

Her list of volunteer accom-plishments and commitments is long. Volunteering is a family tradition; Stimpson began her volunteering as a Girl Guide leader and Sunday school teacher when she was a young bride in Victoria.

“After I had my children, I volunteered in all aspects of their schooling,” she said.

Once the family relocated to Quesnel in the 1980s, Stimpson has given 29 years with the Le-gion Ladies Auxiliary, 20 years with Gold Pan Lifeline, 19 years with Dunrovin/Residential Care, 18 years with the Quesnel Lions

Club, 14 years with Emergency Social Services, 13 years with Quesnel Crime Stoppers, three years with One to One Reading program and just this year she joined the Hospital Auxiliary.

“I volunteer because I’m a people person,” she said.

“Acknowledging people and putting a smile on their face is its own reward.”

Stimpson added the simple act of spending time and talking to people can brighten their day and yours.

“I also feel its important to call and comfort those who’ve lost someone.”

In her nomination letter, Col-leen Mighton said of Stimpson, “Jean’s energy, initiative and complete dedication to her mis-sions inspires me to be a better person.”

With all her many volunteer activities, Stimpson said she couldn’t chose which was the most important.

Citizen of the Year will be an-nounced at the gala event, April 23.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6:30 p.m. in the Legion Hall.

When Keith Watkin stands up to be counted for his extensive volun-teerism, he knows he doesn’t stand alone.

“Volunteering isn’t one person,” he said.

“It’s a whole team of volunteers.”Watkin is one of six local citizens

nominated for the 2012 Volunteer Citizen of the Year.

Although his parents volunteered, it wasn’t until Watkin moved to Quesnel in the early 1970s as a young man that a fellow Cariboo Pulp and Paper employee convinced him to join the Quesnel volunteer fire department.

“My backdoor neighbour, Kadi Koyama was a volunteer fire fighter and took me along,” Watkin said.

“Chuck Beath was the fire chief. This was the first time I had ever joined anything.”

What hooked him on becom-ing involved was the camaraderie, teamwork and knowing that no matter what you always had the backup of your fellow volunteers.

Watkin advanced to captain dur-ing his 12 years with the fire depart-ment. However, when he decided to move his volunteering to Quesnel and District Highway Rescue, he stepped down to an associate mem-ber of the fire department.

“I embraced the new challenge, but still found the same qualities in my fellow volunteers,” he said.

“The same camaraderie and team-work.”

But Watkin said one of the big dif-ferences was every call for highway rescue was a bad call.

“Highway rescue calls are always very personal, people are in trou-ble,” he said.

“I did 11 years but I had to let it go.”

After the carnage he witnessed on the highways, Watkins was happy to join the Good Cheer team where you deal with a great organization that does good work. He works all year long preparing aspects for Good Cheer delivery at Christmas-time.

Watkin also loves his Lions Club volunteer work because that also is good for the soul.

“Again, we have strong camarade-rie and teamwork,” he said.

“We work together to serve the community. But again I stress it takes a team to get things done.”

Watkin added Quesnel is a remarkable community where vol-unteers are generous with their time and make the community a great place to live.

He admitted there’s satisfaction in being recognized for what you’ve done, but says that can be accom-plished with a simple thank you.

and Helen Simpson of Saskatoon

Saskatchewan. Harold had six

brothers and � ve sisters they moved

to Quesnel BC in 1951. Harold and Ellaine started dating in

1964 and married on May 27, 1965. They have two children Raymond and

April. Harold’s passion was building houses, he had

built 4 of them in Quesnel Area and was employed at

West Fraser mills for 34 years as a millwright. He loved hunting,� shing,curling,

dancing and had a hobby farm. He also played bass for Ellaine and enjoyed jamming

with friends. They enjoyed many trips together. After retirement Harold took up carving and making many

gifts. Harold will be lovingly remembered by his loving

wife Ellaine Of 48 years, mother in law Rhoda Moore, children Raymond, April and

Dean. Grandchildren Shaun, Shy-Leigh, Champagne, Taylor, Dianne and Nikki.

Great-grandsons Kiefer and Ryder, Many family and

friends. The family wishes to express their sincere

gratitude to all those who have supported us during

this time of loss. Thank you to all that sent � owers,

cards and food. Thank you to Dr. Slabord, Dr. Fine,

“We sincerely urge city council to rethink such things in the future.

“Perhaps a lengthier period would be in order, especially avoiding such notices during major calendar or school holidays.”

In their second let-ter, Kyle and Debbie Terlesky wrote about their issues with the safety and traf� c.

“We do notice that Leonard St. already has surprisingly busy traf� c because of it being a no-through road,” they wrote.

“Our children have to be very careful when crossing Leon-ard to visit neighbour friends and walk to school, because of this traf� c � owing up and down the street.

“We think it would be a mistake to do anything that would feasibly increase such traf� c.”

The resident at 120 Leonard St., Andrew Dalgleish wrote a letter in opposition to the secondary suite, citing parking issues and costs associated with the suite for the reason of his petition.

“Parking is at a premium on Leonard and Lunn Streets,” Dalgleish said.

“On-street parking is a de� nite no-no on Leonard St. for safety reasons.

“Parking on the street in front of 136 Leonard St. is par-ticularly dangerous as this property is located on a hill and is really unsafe from October to March.”

As for the costs, Dalgleish said second-ary suites should be required to pay the same fees for city services as other resi-dences.

“It costs the city the same amount to service a suite as it does to service a resi-dence,” he wrote.

“No matter how you cut it, a suite is a residence.”

Ron Campbell, chairperson of the Johnson Neighbour-hood Association, said he’s lost count of the number of times he’s asked council to “reconsider their bias towards secondary suites.”

Campbell also pointed out the traf� c hazards, saying “exit-ing from this space creates an extreme traf� c hazard as traf-� c coming up would not be seen by the person backing out.”

“In case such an occurrence happened, would this not leave both the applicant and the city open to litigation?” Campbell asked.

Bonnie Fallow� eld from the Quesnel Af-fordable Housing Ac-tion Committee was on-hand at the public hearing to discuss the need of more second-ary suites.

She told council about the affordable housing assessment

which found a need for 947 more units in Quesnel.

“The committee fully supports second-ary suites,” she said.

“We would like to see council approve all and any applica-tions put forward.”

Fallow� eld contin-ued by saying many of the suites in Ques-nel are simply inac-cessible and unsafe.

She also said rezon-ing to allow second-ary suites could cut down on wait times for seniors looking for places to stay.

Valerie King, who resides on Leonard St. came to the public hearing and asked council why construc-tion was allowed on the residence at 136 Leonard with no permits.

“We built our house 15 years ago and purchased all permits required,” King said.

“Don’t all people need to follow the same codes?”

King also saw an issue with the parking and said the location of the property at the crest of a hill already makes it dif� cult to navigate.

“I need the road to be a road, not a park-ing lot.”

What the Heck is “Year End” Money?

Political parties have long abused your tax dollars for political purposes. It’s become accepted practice for the governing party to engage in pre-election partisan advertising, sponsor gala events that only the privileged few can attend, and dole out money in the weeks leading up to an election.

In Opposition, the BC Liberals accused the BC NDP of “shoveling money off the back of a truck” heading into the 1997 election. Over the past couple of weeks, the Liberals have been doing the same thing in an overt attempt to buy back votes with your money.

The hyper-political Bollywood gala this past weekend cost taxpayers over $11 million dollars for little to no benefit. Even the people attending this event showed their disdain for its political nature by booing the Premier during her speech.

The rationale used by various ministers is that the money they’re doling out in advance of the May 14th election is “year end money” from various ministries. It’s a bizarre rationalization for two reasons: 1) the government books were supposed to be “closed” on March 31st; and, 2) the government reported a deficit of over $1.2 billion for 2012/13.

There is no “year-end money” when you close your books with a deficit.

Another troubling aspect of this abuse of your tax dollars is that there was no transparency or fairness in deciding which organizations received this money. Calls were made to a few organizations asking if they had “shovel-ready projects,” and photo-ops were quickly arranged.

This isn’t to say that the organizations receiving pre-election cheques weren’t deserving, but there shouldn’t be a dime of taxpayer money spent without a transparent application or bidding process that keeps ministers, MLAs, and political party candidates from playing favorites or using tax money to advance their own political aspirations.

Maybe it’s time BC had a Legislative Budget Officer to keep tabs on party politicians and to publicly report on any political abuses of your tax dollars. We may never be completely rid of this vote-buying farce every election year, but additional oversight could go some way toward keeping parties in check when they get control of the public purse.

Final push for Multi-CentreWell, we’re

for fundraising for the Multi-Centre!

It’s hard to imagine that it’s been a more than four years since the 2008 referendum.

I remember thinking at that time that with a successful referendum, the project would move forward and we’d be able to secure the funding we needed to get the job done.

You’ll remember that before 2008, we often had the larger projects funded through what we called “one-third, one-third, one-third” agreements; that is, the City and Cariboo Regional District (together) and the provincial and federal governments would each add one-third to the project.

By setting the referendum for $15 million, we felt we were being prudent, allowing some room in case senior government couldn’t fund one-third each.

But with the economic crunch that came (right around the final stages of the referendum process), things have changed.

We immediately began to see that funding from senior government wasn’t as forthcoming and we knew it would be difficult to secure the remaining $15 million we needed. But we’ve persevered; we’re determined to look under every rock (or sell it in the North Cariboo Nature Mural), to find any funding we can to meet our goal.

Thank you to the fundraising committee for all your hard work!

The last report I received indicated that we have raised approximately $25 million

That’s not enough. This money is made up of $15 million from the referendum, $4 million from the provincial government, $2 million from the Northern Development Initiative Trust, a $1 million commitment

from West Fraser Timber and additional donations and sponsorships from corporate and grassroots fundraising. This amount also includes pledges and corporate leads.

The total of approximately $25 million also includes the additional commitment from City Council and the CRD Northern Directors.

They have committed to investing Multi-Centre pre-taxation towards the project which was designed to be “the last piece of the puzzle” and would be used if the funding secured from all other sources, such as the federal government or corporate fundraising initiatives, is not enough to complete the project.

We need the

corporate community to step up in a big way right now. And we also need supporters to buy their seats or sponsor art in the North Cariboo Nature Mural (you can learn more about those projects by calling 250-992-3522 or visiting www.ourmulticentre.com)

It’s going to take a team effort! It is going to be the community, you and I that build the multi-centre!

We continue to lobby the federal government but in all honesty we are not confident that our efforts will be successful.

Once again, I offer thanks to our dedicated volunteer fundraising committee, as well as the corporate fundraising team at the Quesnel Community

and Economic Development Corporation. Both are doing their absolute best. Good job!

I would also thank all of the corporations and residents who have come forward and donated to the project at this time. You have contributed to your future.

You can help and now is our time. We can always use volunteers and it goes without saying, more donations!

My friend just invented a great little product

that, at first glance, seems insignificant.

Handing me two tiny pieces of clear flexible plastic that looked like drinking glasses for Barbie and Ken, she demonstrated their actual purpose by slipping them onto the heels of her stilettos.

“Now Bob won’t insist we take our shoes off in the house,” she said, referring to her husband’s desire to protect their hardwood flooring. Smart. I can’t stand taking my shoes off and ruining my party outfit.

“They also solve the problem of walking on grass,” she said excitedly.

“Like at a garden wedding.” Smart again. I’ve sunk into the soft ground a few times myself. It wasn’t graceful.

With a patent pending, Dana’s “Heelio Dealios” are quickly becoming a hit at wedding shows and shoe stores where their usefulness is recognized immediately.

“I’m pretty clutzy,” one fashionable young lady told me.

“I wear them to keep from slipping.”

Armed with a little pair of my own, I went home and put them on the beautiful high heels I wore to my friend’s outdoor wedding last year.

I first had to clean off some of the dried-up mucky grass still stuck to the bottom, but once I did, my new additions fit like a glove.

After trying the caps on a few other pairs, it became obvious that I owned a lot of shoes that I barely wore. Some of them still had price tags attached – yet a layer of dust over them. What a waste.

Grabbing a large bin, I started filling it with all the shoes I knew would be much better used and appreciated by someone other than me. It was hard to part with them initially, but anything that didn’t

fit my feet comfortably or wasn’t something I had worn in the last year was thrown in the bin.

My feelings of guilt over rarely wearing them were quickly replaced with feelings of relief that someone would.

I then asked my husband and kids to do the same with their shoes so we could donate them to the charity “Soles 4 Souls,” which has drop boxes all over B.C., Canada and the United States.

I first heard about this organization through my friend Don Robichaud, who passed away suddenly five weeks ago. He was passionate about the project and became heavily involved when his friend Jim Belshaw, the owner of Roy’s Shoes, wanted to introduce “Soles 4 Souls” to Kelowna.

Hoping to collect a couple of thousand pairs of shoes to donate after the earthquake in Haiti, they ended up collecting over 45,000 pairs their very first year.

Since then their team has collected 300,000 pairs locally and the organization’s goal is to

now collect a million shoes per province all across Canada.

“People like this charity because anyone can participate,” Jim said. “And the local agencies get first crack at the donations before they’re shipped overseas, so we’re helping out at home as well.”

Catering to people who might not even own one pair of shoes, I felt hesitant about donating my frivolous high heels. But after learning that all types were needed, I knew they’d end up in good hands, and on good feet. That made me happy. Who knows - maybe someone will wear a pair of my pretty pumps to a job interview.

As a bonus I attached a pair of Heelio Deadlio’s inside the stilettos - just in case their new owner ends up walking on hardwood floors or soft green grass after they land a really great job.

council meeting; the third reading to allow a secondary suite at 136 Leonard St. was voted on and passed by council.

The official community plan has not been passed, yet, by council, but it appears they are allowing ‘spot’ zoning for the suites on any application.

It was questioned what process has to be followed for an approval; it was stated that there has to be a public forum at city hall before any approval is given.

In this case, that hearing was held on March 25, there were five people in favour, all family members, none of whom live on Leonard Street. One lives out of city

boundaries. There was a petition signed by 16 of the 24 householders who do live on the street who are against it, there were five written submissions against and also seven spoken submissions against. In the oral application for this suite there were obvious discrepancies, for instance that several people on the street who had been asked if they were opposed and he said none were. I have yet to find anyone who was asked.

The house in question is not owner occupied. The suite was built and occupied before the application was made; it is priced at $365,000 and hardly fits the criteria for “affordable housing.”

Parking on the street was discussed and it was stated

there was an adequate amount for up to four cars; since the application was heard there have been up to four cars on the street on most days with no effort made to park off road.

What is the point of a public open forum when concerns seemed to be heard and totally disregarded; why does council as a whole not have to state their reasons in public. If all re-zoning applications are treated in this fashion what is the point of a public hearing?

It is a blatant waste of time and money. If this is democracy in action in the city of Quesnel I fear for us all!

Subdivision, I have heard and read enough negative reactions to the City’s Affordable Housings Strategy’s recommendation that council support secondary suite in single dwellings.

The City of Quesnel is offering a solution to our ever growing need for affordable housing by supporting secondary suites in Johnston Subdivision, Carson Subdivision and neighboring areas.

Secondary suites provide affordable housing for our students, at our nearby college, a first home to an adult child, a safe and secure place for seniors and people living with disabilities.

With the college, transit and

community amenities close by, these suites would provide low impact densification while maintaining community character and enable families from a diversity of economic backgrounds to live in the same area.

People may believe that only the Westside allows secondary suites; untrue, nowhere in Quesnel can you develop a legal secondary suite without rezoning. Also untrue: your neighbors utility bill are affected by suites. On the contrary, each secondary suite actually receives its own utility billing. Suites would also help provide low income housing without government subsidies, and help homeowners by providing extra revenue, to maintain the quality of their homes.

To what lengths will some people go to get the outcome they desire?

I feel Ron Paull made false accusations when he accused Ernest Gamache of showing his hand…money...was he suggesting Gamache bribed city council!

When actually, he merely stepped in when his sister-in-law was gravely sick to help her out with � nances and applied for a change in zoning, the same way any one of us would have to. Personally, my family has been bullied by a neighbor for having a non-relative living in our home.

We were told to move to the Westside if we wanted people living with us; there was name calling, derogatory remarks against my husband’s job performance and even suggestions of physical violence.

Ron Paull writes in his letter to the editor, “If council approves 136 Leonard Street, it will be political suicide.”

Is that a threat?Also, Ron Paull suggested secondary suites

should be decided on a one by one basis. Just ask Bonnie Fallow� eld and Ernest Gamache how that worked for them.

Needing a safe place for her adult son to live, Bonnie applied for a secondary suite, despite what Paull writes, she faced opposition.

Without the support of one other speaker at her public hearing she would have been alone, just as Ernest Gamache was when he walked into his public hearing on March 25.

A few votes may have been gained or lost, but council has earned the overall respect of its citizens.

knowing that Quesnel is moving ahead by expanding the viability of legal suites and affordable housing throughout the community.

Our elected of� cials do this sometimes thankless task because they are committed to the community.

In upholding the principles and policies brought forward in the OurQuesnel Housing Strategy, they have af� rmed their commitment to move into the future.

The best way for us to support our mayor and

council is simply showthem respect for their willingness to take on elected positions.

We have an opportunity to learn that it is possible to have differing views, yet still work together toward

a stronger, more vibrant community.

Let’s all have con� dence that our mayor and council will continue to make decisions that advance the goals of our city.

Let’s stop the petitions and save some tax dollars.

Rose (Hoy) Reardon1923 -2013

It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Rose (Hoy) Reardon, lov-ing mother, grandmother, great grandmother and long standing member of the Lumby community. She was a unique character whose personality brought joy to all who knew her.Rose was born in Quesnel, B.C on January 15, 1923. She was number four in a fam-ily of twelve children. After graduating from highschool, she managed the drygoods department in C.D. Hoy Dept. Store. She was active in sports and a creative artist. Rose was also full of beans and had a way of making people laugh. She ultimately moved to Montreal where she met her husband and spent several years there. Finally, they moved to Lumby where the grass was greener

and where she actively taught Tai Chi for many years. After a lengthy illness, Rose passed away in Vernon, B.C. on April 3, 2013.She was pre-deceased by her husband, Donald; daughter, Donna and son Allan; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Hoy; her sisters, Evelyn, Anne and Irene; her brothers, Ben and Jack.She is survived by her sons, Gary (Edith) and Tim (Te-resa); grandchildren Angela, Aileen (Brandin), Eric, Savan-na (Cameron), and Madison. Great grandchildren: Bran-don, Teagan and Serenity. Sisters: May, Yvonne, Lona, Star, Lily (Frank) and Marline Liu . A tea will be held in her memory at the Royal Cana-dian Legion Hall in Lumby on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.

I had driven by the home of Doug and Cheryl Perdue on Gook Road literally thou-

sands of time and had no idea the bountiful garden that existed in the back yard. Their 50- by 100-foot plot produces everything from pumpkins and squash to cel-ery and beets. Cheryl says that in its heyday, when the children were growing, they could sit down to four meals a week with everything coming from the garden, meat included.

When asked why she gardened, Cheryl replied, “We’re cheap. If

we can grow it why wouldn’t we?”

Both she and Doug grew up with gardens,

freezers and cold rooms full of preserves and they have planted a garden themselves everywhere they have lived.

Their philosophy is, “if you can’t get a bounty, it’s a waste of space.” So they try a crop and if it’s suc-cessful, keep going, otherwise they buy it at the farmers’ market.

Doug is famous for wanting to try anything different. At one time or another he has grown sugar maples from his grandfather’s farm in Ontario, lemon and or-ange trees and presently is babying a pomegranate tree. Last season, he grew Tinda, an East Indian squash the size of an apple that everyone loved. They have even grown sweet potatoes which they acquired from Gardner Farms.

They have raspberries and strawberries, Saskatoons and gooseberries, two apple trees and

three cherry trees and a couple of plum trees which do not bear fruit as they are out of synch. The fruit is stored in the cold room, turned into preserves, or frozen. They pick blueberries and huckleber-ries from “Doug’s secret spot near Dunkley’s.”

They have raised meat chickens, turkeys and kept laying hens. One year they got a European wild boar piglet to fatten up and the unique smell drove the neigh-bours crazy. When the kids were young, Doug, who is a forester with Dunkley, brought home a newborn lamb. The company had been using sheep for vegetation control and when the lamb was born they needed it removed so it wouldn’t attract wolves. Lambert was fed with a nipple on a pop bottle and eventually ended up on the dinner table. Their daughter, when told they were eating Lam-bert, said, “He’s good.”

They start most of their own seeds, 12 � ats of them, which begin life under lights in the shop and then are moved to a basement room with plenty of windows, for hardening off. They like the corn to be eight inches tall before planting out. If they plant seeds, the crows will eat them and if the seedlings are smaller, the blasted crows will pull up the plants to get to the seeds.

They keep saying they’ll down-size, but whenever they look at a possible house, the � rst ques-tion becomes, “Where would the garden go?”

So, for now, they’ll stay where they are. Their children, who saw the garden as a chore while growing up, now grow herbs and veggies on their own apartment balconies.

Students from 12 local elementary schools have their work on display at the Ques-nel Art Gallery for the month of April.

KidzArt is sponsored by School District 28 and was organized by McNaughton school principal Dennis Hawkins-Bogle and teacher Marguerite Hall.

“The creative arts play an important role in child development, speci� cally brain develop-ment, but also skill and aesthetic develop-ment,” Hawkins-Bogle said.

“When children are able to focus on creative pursuits, they activate abstract thinking pro-cesses. This in turn allows children to further create not only great pieces of art, but ideas and abstractions that inform their analytical and creative thinking.”

Although primarily framed art, the show also includes three-dimensional work in the show-case just outside the gallery.

Hall was also very enthusiastic about the value to students when creating art.

“When creating an art piece, the student has control. With that one piece they learn to problem solve, think critically about the effect they’re achieving and they learn to self-assess,” she said.

With each art piece, students are given the opportunity to experiment and try out their creativity.”

She added when the whole class is involved in creating art pieces, the students view the work and creations of others. When they all use the same materials and all have the same lesson, they see with their own eyes that each creation is unique. She went on to say this experience promotes an understanding and an acceptance of others’ talents and abilities.

Hawkins-Bogle said the creative arts is an op-portunity for students to develop their artistic skills.

“This show is the culmination of thinking and skill,” he said.

“It’s a celebration of art and of learning.”Hall added, “experiencing all of the arts in

school enables students to experiment with all the various ways they can express themselves. And having experienced art, they are more able to appreciate art when they see it in the world. Having the ability to appreciate art enriches their lives.”

KidzArt hangs in the gallery for the month of April. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Satur-day, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Quesnel Art Gallery is located in the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre on Northstar Road in Quesnel.

Hydro Authority, announced last weekend, was welcome news but on closer analysis it appears that further clarification is needed before commercial users will see where they benefit. The rate cuts, second to be announced by the Authority since the merger of the former B.C. Power Commission and the B.C. Electric, carry an across- the -board saving of 30 cents per month for all residential consumers, who received the greatest benefit in the reductions announced a year ago. Industrial users, particularly in this area, stand to benefit materially because lower mainland rates are to be extended to all areas now connected to the integrated hydro system. Areas benefitting from these new rates include the Lower Mainland, the Southern Interior region served by the Whatshan and Shuswap power plants, the Central Interior region including the Prince George area, all of the Cariboo, and all of Vancouver Island except Port Hardy and Alert Bay which are isolated areas served by diesel generating plants.”

Cancer Society Relay For Life in Quesnel is getting closer with every day that passes. There are only six weeks left until Relay Day and that means time to register and fundraise is going quickly. April is a great time to really get into your fundraising, as there are several incentives to fundraise this month.

From April 1 to 18, ScotiaBank is sponsoring a grand fundraising challenge. For every $1,000 your team raises in this time, you will be entered in a draw to win another $1000 donation from ScotiaBank. April 19, two lucky teams in Quesnel will have another grand added to their fundraising total.

This month also holds Team FUNdraising Day in British Columbia. April 13, we challenge all teams in B.C. to join in a province-wide day of fundraising. This is a great day to hold team events like garage sales, car washes, or bake sales, or to go door to door for donations. With the online donation system at www.relaybc.ca/quesnel2013, now is the time to send

some emails and make some phone calls to friends and family across the country and ask them to donate. You may be surprised at how many will answer the request in this way. Make this month a contest between your team members, that whoever raises the most money this month will receive a pledge of $20 from all the other team members.

As of Monday, the teams in Quesnel have raised a total of $24,757, a fantastic start. However, we know how enthusiastic and driven our teams and Relay For Life participants are and we know they can raise even more. Relay for Life fast approaching

Fire is so very destructive, but it can create new beginnings as well. About six years ago, a local family’s world was turned

upside down when their house burned to the ground.

Not only were the family treasures destroyed, but sadly, they lost pets as well.

As the remains were combed for anything to salvage, a tiny mewing was heard. Remark-ably, a kitten had some-how survived the devas-tation, but not without repercussions.

Its fur was burnt; its ears were singed; its

eyes were melted shut and infection was tak-ing hold, but amazingly this creature was cling-ing to life. Who did they think to call? The Crooked Leg Ranch.

First they tenderly cleaned her with warm wa-ter. They � ushed her eyes with a saline solu-tion, thinking that if she could see then she had a good chance to survive. Her eyes gingerly opened, pusey and infected, but open.

Like a phoenix, this kitten seemed to be rising from the ashes so, they named her Cinder. The next morning she went to the vet where she re-ceived pain killers, topical ointments and an IV to battle dehydration.

For two months, Cinder was treated with an-tibiotics and salves several times a day. At � rst, she was very reluctant to walk because the pads of her feet were damaged and tender. Most of her ears were gone, just little nubs were left, but she kept � ghting and eventually became as healthy and active as she could be.

You have to love a � ghting spirit and that is exactly what one vet tech did, welcoming Cin-der into her family. Today, Cinder is happy in her forever home and she even acts as a seeing eyed companion for her blind feline friend!

Justin Fulton needed a Red Flyer wagon last Saturday to cart his trophies home.

Named MVP by the team, along with grabbing the highest scorer trophy, Fulton took the same two trophies from the CIHL, plus a top forward of the CIHL trophy.

Over 18 games in the regular season, Fulton netted 15 goals and 25 assists for a total of 40 points on the season, five points above his closest competitor.

"I think it's cool. Everyone's proud to have that trophy in the Arena with the Quesnel Kangaroo name on it," Fulton said of the honour.

Fulton was quick to credit the team with helping him make the top spot in points.

"It starts up from the D. They get it up to the forwards, up to me, and I put it in the net. It's all a team job," he said.

Adding that towards the end of the season, his team mates would feed him passes, hoping to run up his points in an effort to get him the trophy.

It was more than points that got Fulton his trophies though, both top forward and league MVP were voted on by all nine teams in the league. It was a unanimous vote that put Fulton in possession of the MVP trophy.

It was through a combination of skill and hard work that got him his collection of cups, according to his team mates.

Levon Johnson, a line mate of Fulton and the scorer of many of Fulton's assists, was happy to play alongside Fulton, saying

that he is both a hard worker and a skilled player.

"If he can't beat them on strength, he'll find a way to deke around them. He's a pretty creative player that way," he said.

"Justin is a skilled player that works hard at both ends of the rink and winning the scoring race for that kind of player is a credit to him and his team mates," Coach Brian Kozak said.

Waylon L'Heureux, the captain of the team, called him a gritty player with great focus.

For now, Fulton's looking forward to having those trophies in the 'Roos case and preferably keeping it there.

"That's the plan: keep that trophy in there as long as I can," he said.

Enough cups to serve a dinner party

With their first contest of the playoffs being a

2-1 nail biter, most experts were calling for a higher scoring final as both teams are blessed with plenty of offensive talent.

This prediction was soon proven wrong as each team had several opportunities to kill off power-plays early as Bear and BCS made five combined trips to the sin-bin. With no one able to put the biscuit in the basket, a tight checking game evolved which went to Zamboni time knotted at goose eggs.

More of the same greeted the near record crowd until

three minutes into the final stanza, when the sea parted for (Silent) Seth Phillips who fired a low shot to the stick side, off the post and in for the all-important first goal.

BCS soon threw caution to the wind as Kevin (Nightrider) Hesslegrave, who had scored a goal in their previous three contests, had several glorious chances to knot the score. The stalwart Bear D bent but didn’t break as Zack (Attack) Leslie did everything he could to post the second straight 1-0 Lumber Cup championship clincher.

With the victory, rookie FHL Commissioner (BIG) Bob Merta earned his eighth Lumber Cup, with rookie FHL Captain Dan (The Man) Lowndes only 7 behind with 1.

Yes sports fans, the odor at the Barn on Barlow is not natural and could be attributed to the meltdown of the vaunted Fraser

River GM squad, or may have been the red hot goal tending of Zack (Attack) Leslie in the Bear cage, or (Maestro) Mike Enemark between the Blue Collar pipes.

But it was probably the Pepé Le Pew stench coming from the Serenity room as they lost 3 straight to punch their ticket to the playoff basement.

Serenity actually started off on the right foot with an impressive 5-1 win over the Chevy Crew. Unfortunately, they couldn’t sustain the magic as their flame flickered out with a 3-2 loss to Bear, a 5-3 second half loss to BCS and an 8-4 crushing at the hands of Fraser River.

Fraser River couldn’t be very much happier than the Builder Bunch as they followed up their opening game loss to Serenity with a two all draw with BCS and a fateful 5-2 loss to Bear, who actually had a five-zip lead at one point.

Their lone bright light of the weekend was an 8-4 Saturday morning win over Serenity, where Ian Hannah (Montana) scored a high five.

Blue Collars run to the final began with their 2-1 last minute victory over Bear, their come from behind two all tie with Fraser River and a gutsy 5-3 victory over the Builders which punched their ticket to the Saturday afternoon Final.

BCS’s opponent in the final was actually Bear, who they had defeated 2-1 by scoring in the last minute on a power-play after killing off a five on three PP just moments earlier. Bear managed to go on a roll after the heartbreaking loss as they beat Serenity 3-2 and Fraser River 5-2 to RSVP their front row seat in the Final.

The Gang Ranch tested our butcher bull trade with 1830 lb. bulls topping 91.75. Tony & Mike Bayliff saw their 2308 lb. Hereford bulls top our trade 94.25, their 1415 lb. butcher cows powered to 74.75. Paula Maisonville from Likely had 2345 lb. Angus bulls reach 95.25, their 1707 lb. Angus cows topped at 75.75. Some powerful feeder cattle replacement heifers and grass cattle were featured today. Stirrup Ranch’s reputation 731 lb. replacement heifers hit 139.00, their 680 lb. Black heifers reached 149.50. 50 kilometres is a long way to run. If someone said that to you, you would respond, 'fifteen, not fifty, right.' To which the runner would respond, with their head up high like a boss, 'fifty, five zero.' And you wouldn't respond, you'd just sit there with your mouth slightly open because that's just way too far to run.

Three ladies from Quesnel recently did exactly that, traveling all the way to the Lower Mainland to run for seven hours. That's pretty much a work day, if you take out lunch and bathroom breaks and minutes lost looking at nothing or checking your email.

Jocelyn Loomis, Judy Frisby and Laurie Bare took on the Mercurian-worthy run.

Loomis finished the 50 km in 7:45, Frisby in 6:43 and Laurie Bare in 7:15. The first numeral there is hours remember.

The race drew 150 steel-legged and iron-lunged runners from all over B.C. to Buntzen Lake, just north of Port Moody to run the trails of the area, gaining and losing 1,800 metres (6,000 feet) in the process.

The route, ranging from clear dirt trails to rough and root-riddled, wound around Buntzen Lake and through the forests of the coast.

Flips, dips and gymnasticsThe athletes of Quesnel Technics

Gymnastics Club have returned from Kamloops after participating in the ‘Wild West Fest’ gymnastics tournament and they have not returned empty handed.

After the three day event, team members collected a total of 10 medals and 10 ribbons in the various categories the athletes competed in.

Celina De Rose, Isaac Woollends and Jessica Higgins all took medals at the competition.

De Rose represented Quesnel in the provincial level one novice group and came away with a total of five medals: a bronze in vault and a gold medal in her other three events.

De Rose's total score also gave her a overall gold medal for her group. De Rose also received a special award for her showing on the beam in the combined level one novice/open.

On the provincial level three Tyro side, Higgins picked up a bronze medal on vault and another bronze on floor, while picking up a pair of fourth place

ribbons in the beam and bars event.

Competing on the mens side was Woollends, who was able to pick up a pair of gold medals on the pommel horse and the parallel bars as well as a pair of silver medals on the rings and the vault.

In the category of provincial level one Argo, Presley Kitamura received a sixth place ribbon on bars and a tenth place ribbon on beam.

In the provincial level one Tyro group, Sierra Moore found a sixth place ribbon on the beam and a seventh place ribbon with her floor routine.

Two competitors were entered in the provincial level two Tyro. Emily Gorder received a sixth place ribbon on the bars and an eighth place ribbon on floor, while Alyssa Schneider garnered a sixth on vault and a ninth place ribbon on floor.

Each of the female competitors were judged on the their individual achievements in four gymnastic disciplines: floor, beam, vault and the uneven bars.
