After a week-long conference, Quesnel City Council came back with all five of their resolutions endorsed.

“I’m really glad some of these resolutions have actually made people stand up and take notice,” Coun. Laurey-Ann Roodenburg said, speaking to a resolution near to her heart – that of a national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.

“I don’t even believe this is an election issue – it’s the right thing to do.

Coun. Ron Paull spoke to a resolution he is particularly passionate about, that of the elimination of door-to-door delivery by Canada Post.

“I’m particularly proud of that resolution,” he said.

The resolution states:WHEREAS Canada Post

Corporation is in the process of eliminating door-to-door mail delivery as part of their ongoing program to increase postal rates and reduce postal services including the closure and downsizing of post offices and reduction of post office hours;

AND WHEREAS door-to-door mail delivery is an essential utility service that positively contributes to the liveability and safety of Canadian neighbourhoods, especially for increasing populations of seniors, shut-ins and persons with mobility and accessibility challenges;

AND WHEREAS Canada Post’s “super mail box” alternative to door-to-door mail delivery appears to be plagued with problems relating to criminal vandalism, theft, and general

public safety;THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED that the UBCM calls upon the Federal Government to reverse the decision to eliminate door-to-door mail delivery and to properly consult with local governments and citizens in general relative to the continuation of door-to-door mail delivery and other levels of postal service that are expected and required in Canada.

Two other resolutions Paull spoke to were calling for the reinstatement of assistance from ICBC for windshield rock repair and notification of candidates in a local government election.

Coun. Scott Elliott, who has spoken out on the UK company Reckitt Benckiser purchasing Cariboo farmland for carbon credits, said he was happy to bring the issue further forward.

“With concerns mentioned repeatedly on this, we were able to bring those issues forward to the Official Opposition Standing Committee on Agriculture,” he said, noting they were “very receptive.”

Elliott also noted the need to nail down the “moratorium” the company announced while reviewing the strategy after the controversy following their purchase.

Mayor Bob Simpson said he focused his time on ministerial meetings, highlighting education, health, affordable housing, the annual allowable cut and industry and “expedited” transition planning.

“We had some really interesting conversations that will help council with its strategic planning next month,” he said.

The City of Quesnel’s Public Works Department has commenced relocation of a number of underground utilities in preparation for the start of spring construction.

Water, sewer, and storm water lines will be moved to accommodate the building footprint and to

service the building. Most of the relocation work will take place on Callanan Street and in LeBourdais Park, immediately east of the curling rink. Smaller portions of the work will take place on Vaughan Street, the Civic Plaza and the lane running north/south between Vaughan

Street and Callanan Street. The Cariboo Regional

District and the City of Quesnel hosted an open house on Tuesday, September 29 from 6-8 p.m. in the lobby of the North Cariboo Twin Arenas. The open house gave residents an opportunity to view the final construction

drawings and ask questions of the project manager, the architects, elected officials and staff about the project status.

Ground will be broken for construction of the West Fraser Centre in the spring of 2016 with an estimated completion date of the fall of 2017.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations advises that an ecosystem restoration burn is planned for the Crow’s Bar area between Wednesday, Sept. 30 and Thursday, Oct. 15, weather conditions permitting.

About 600 hectares south of Dog Creek, around the Fraser River, will be treated to help restore native grassland ecosystems. This controlled burn is managed under the Ecosystem Restoration Program within the ministry’s Range Branch and will be conducted with the assistance of staff from the BC Wild re Service’s Cariboo Fire Centre.

Trained wild re personnel will carefully monitor the burn. Prescribed res may only be ignited

on days when the forecasted venting index is “good”. All prescribed res must comply with the Environmental Management Act’s open burning smoke control regulation, which helps minimize the amount of smoke produced.

Historically, grasslands in the Cariboo-Chilcotin were renewed through frequent, low-intensity ground res. Such res prevented tree encroachment, rejuvenated understory plants and helped maintain more open grasslands and forests with large trees.

The reintroduction of managed, low-intensity ground res to these grasslands is intended to restore and maintain the traditional grassland plant communities

that are native to these areas. These managed res also reduce fuel loads, leading to a decreased risk of catastrophic wild res.

These res are part of an ongoing ecosystem restoration program administered by the provincial government through the Cariboo-Chilcotin Ecosystem Restoration Committee. This committee was formed in 2008 to better support ecosystem restoration efforts within the Cariboo-Chilcotin region.

Membership in the committee includes representatives from provincial and federal

government, as well as local First Nations, B.C. Cattlemen’s Associations, various conservation societies and other forestry professionals. To learn more about the Ecosystem Restoration Committee, visit: www.ccerc.net

Public scrutiny

Nearly three years after he hit two joggers in a crosswalk on a dark December eve-

ning, Barry Christiansen learned this week that he will not face jail time. The former Surrey resident was

given a nine-month conditional sentence in Surrey Provincial Court Monday, meaning he will be con-fined to his home for a month, fol-lowed by two to six months with a 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. curfew. He was also given a one-year driving ban and ordered to perform 150 hours of community service. The two women he hit say they

have undergone an extremely diffi-cult recovery process since the inci-dent – something the presiding judge took into account in handing down his sentence.Judge James Sutherland noted, too,

Christiansen’s history of volunteer-ing in the community and his strong family support, prior to delivering the sentence. But he also considered the media

exposure and public shaming that Christiansen has been subject to since charges were laid against him one year after the incident, reiterat-ing legal opinion that such scrutiny constitutes a form of punishment in and of itself and acts as a deterrent for others. If public scrutiny – and shaming of

the man accused – served as a pun-ishment before guilt was determined, would the accused then not be unfairly punished had he been found not guilty? It should be noted that Christian-

sen only pleaded guilty last week to charges of “failing to stop at an ac-cident scene involving bodily harm,” after his trial, set for earlier this month, was cancelled just a few days before its scheduled start date. While it’s evident Christansen feels

remorse – he was visibly emotional while addressing the court – had he pleaded guilty when he was first charged nearly two years ago, per-haps the public scrutiny and sham-ing he endured would have been reduced.

Oct. 1 is the International Day of the Older

Person and National Seniors Day, a day set aside in the year to acknowledge the contributions of seniors worldwide.

As B.C.’s Seniors Advocate, I am encouraging a celebration of our senior citizens in this province. It may be your dad, your mom, your grandparent, or maybe it’s you we are celebrating.

At the Office of the Seniors Advocate, we focus on systemic issues that affect a large number of seniors. We tackle housing and health care, gaps in home support, income support and transportation.

So much of our work looks at what’s wrong when it comes to seniors, but today I want to focus on what’s right. And what is right are the truly astounding qualities I see in seniors as I travel to every corner of the province meeting with seniors face to face.

Today I urge you to celebrate the courage of seniors. The 80-year-old woman with severe arthritis

who braves driving rain, but still walks several kilometres to and from the grocery story to get supplies for dinner.

The father who decides to become a university student for the first time at 70. The widowed grandparent who steps up to parent a grandchild after raising five kids of her own.

Oct. 1 is a day to celebrate the selflessness of seniors. In virtually every sector of society it’s easy to see this in action. Individual seniors want to help in the diverse communities they live in. According to StatsCan, Canadians 65 and over, volunteer on average 220 hours per year, higher than any age group.

They do it not for their resumés or for graduation requirements, they do it for

the most part, because they get a deep satisfaction from helping others. One look at the composition of our service groups tells us this kind of giving is being lost as time goes on.

What I am also reflecting on today is the profound commitment and tenacity I see in many of the seniors I meet.

I think of the wife who travelled hours each day by bus to be with her husband at mealtimes. I remember the letter I received from an 83-year-old man who is caring for his wife with severe dementia, declining home support saying he just wants to be the one to put her to bed each night.

The seniors I hear from know what they want and many of them are willing to fight and fight hard to get what they feel they and their loved ones deserve.

I’d like us to also acknowledge another extraordinary quality that so many of our older citizens possess – an unbelievable ability to adapt to change, not just small shifts in the way things are done, but dramatic societal change on a global scale.

The variety and magnitude of change that our older population has experienced is almost unfathomable – from streetcars to high-speed trains, brooms to vacuum robots, inkwells to iPads, courtship to online dating and the list goes on.

The individual contributions of our seniors could fill this newspaper for decades to come. It’s these unique experiences of the older people in your life I invite you to celebrate today. Seniors are not all the same.

Their likes and dislikes, choices and needs are as different at 80, as they were at 18.

We aren’t celebrating “seniors” we are celebrating Edna, Bev, Mohinder, Walter and the other 816,000 amazing individuals who happen to be over 65 living in this province.

On this day, we say a heartfelt thank you to everything you offer all of us.

Editor:Last Friday I went to a

meeting of Lead Now, a Canada-wide organization that wants to defeat Harper by voting for the best candidate who can win a riding be they Liberal, Conservative or the Green party.

At first I was very hesitant because it is not what can be called democratic, but neither is Harper.

During the discussion it became clear that the voting of the three

major parties was close and I think that Mr. Harper should not be given another chance to do more harm than he already has done.

Harper is backed up by big money and has chosen a very long campaign which gave him an unfair advantage over the other parties.

The following are the reasons why I think Harper has to go. Seven deficits in seven years is not a record to trust his economic sense.

Putting all his eggs in the oil basket was a fatal mistake. Cutting down services for the veterans, the un-employed, the poor and healthcare was inhumane.

Cutting down public services such as rescue operations, access to government institutions and education is not in the best service of the general public, especially if the rich were given tax breaks.

His attitude towards environmental issues is

beyond belief.The decimation of the

Ministry of Environment and the firing of scientists who did not agree with his drastic measures is one thing; the shredding of 40 years of scientific documentation is childish and stupid.

Mr. Harper killed the Kyoto accord and in many cases ignored Native rights. Bill C 59 is a masterpiece of making Canadians living in a police state.

When people in canoes

were protesting at the future site of the Site C Dam they were charged with being terrorists. They are marked and cannot leave Canada. So much for democracy.

Sending Canadian fighter jets to Syria is interfering in what I believe is an internal Muslim religious war that cannot be won with just fighter jets and creates more hatred while costing millions and millions of dollars that could be spent on Canadians who

have been cut short by his political motives.

Mr. Harper has given Canada a bad name internationally. For these reasons I believe that Mr. Harper should be removed from power at all costs.

Lesser-known symptoms of breast cancerPublic perception

that breast cancer is only identified

by lumps detected through self-examina-tion or routine mam-mography may prevent thousands of women from receiving an early diagnosis and the care they need. Although lumps are the most common symptom asso-ciated with the disease, women should recog-nize that breast cancer can produce additional symptoms.Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of the pre-mier organizations for breast cancer research, advocacy and treatment, advises that the warning signs for breast cancer are not the same for all women (or men). Various changes in the breast and body can occur, including the following conditions.Breast-size changes:Many left and right breasts are not com-

pletely symmetrical, and women familiar with their bodies know that one breast is often slightly larger than the other. However, breast-size changes that occur out of the blue may be indicative of a medical problem.Skin rash or redness:Women who are breast-feeding can experience a rash on the breasts from an infection of breast tissue. But those who are not breastfeeding should be evaluated by a doctor if redness, irri-tation or rash appears.Nipple changes:Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and is not associated with breastfeeding can be in-dicative of cancer. Other changes to the nipples, such as pulling in of the nipple (inversion) or itchy, scaling skin on the nipple, should be brought to the attention of a doctor.Changes to the skin:

Dimpling of the skin, peeling, flaking, or scal-ing skin can be a cause for concern as well. Lumps elsewhere:Cancerous tumors may not only be felt in the breasts. Breast can-cer can spread to the lymph nodes around the breasts and lumps may be felt under the arms. Unexplained pain:The Mayo Clinic advises that less than 10 percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer report pain as a symptom. But unexplained pain in an area of the breast should not be ignored. Breast pain that does not go away and seems to involve one area of the breast should be checked.Fatigue:General cancer symp-toms can include unu-sual fatigue and unex-plained weight loss. These symptoms should not be left unchecked.

Food prep tips for breast cancer patientsBreast cancer treat-

ment can beexhausting, result-

ing in fatigue that can make it hard for patients to tackle all of the tasks that come with a typ-ical day. That includes preparing meals, which is often the last thing a person fighting breast cancer wants to do after a day of treatment. But nutrition plays a vital role in beating cancer. A nutritious diet can promote strength and increase energy levels, something breast cancer patients know is not always easy to come by. The following are a few tips to help men and women undergoing breast cancer treatment maintain a nutritious diet throughout their treatments.• Plan ahead when you’re feeling strong.

Breast cancer patients often have good days and not-so-good days during the course of their treatments. When the latter comes around, everyday tasks like cooking meals can seem as exhausting as climbing Mount Everest. So breast cancer patients can plan ahead for such days by going the extra mile on those days when their energy levels aren’t compromised. Prepare meals in advance and freeze them so they re-quire minimal effort on those days when energy levels are low. • Avoid empty calories. Empty calories like those found in a bag of potato chips won’t help fight fatigue on those days when your energy levels are low. When eat-ing, opt for foods that are rich in vitamins and nutrients but not heavy

in calories. A meal that is dense in nutrients but not calories will benefit your energy levels, while a calorie-dense meal will only foster feelings of fatigue.• Opt for snacks that are high in protein. When snacking during the day, it’s possible to counter any exhausting effects of breast cancer treatment by choosing high-protein snacks. Foods that are high in protein, including low-fat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and almonds, can improve your energy levels because the body does not break protein down as easily as it does carbohydrates. So pro-tein can be a longer-last-ing energy source than snacking alternatives that are low in protein. If you aren’t much of a snacker, consider a protein shake.

• Buy in bulk. When vis-iting the grocery store, buy items in bulk so you won’t have to make as many trips there. This can help on those days when energy levels are waning. Further save energy by asking a store employee to carry your groceries to your car. On those days when the cupboard is bare and you don’t feel up to a trip to the store, call your local grocer, explain your situation and ask if it’s possible to have groceries delivered. Many grocers would be glad to help.• Modify recipes. In addition to boosting your energy levels, protein helps heal and rebuild tissues, and you can modify recipes to include more protein and improve your ener-gy levels. For example, add cheese to sandwich-

es, pasta dishes and casseroles, as dairy is a strong source of protein. When cooking, use milk instead of water when possible. Beans are another great source of protein, so add them to chili, pasta sauces or soups when cooking. There are many ways to modify recipes to include more protein that won’t compromise taste. If you’re unsure of how to do so, discuss this with a physician or dietician.Fatigue is a common side effect of cancer treatment, but there are many ways men and women undergoing breast cancer treatment can alter their diets to make their meals more nutritious, improving their energy levels as a result.

Across the nation, Santa Shuf e participants enjoy the last run of the season with a 5 km Fun Run or 1 km Elf Walk. Runners and walkers collect pledges to help raise funds in support of their local Salvation Army’s programs and services.

Sponsorship allows you busi-ness or corporation to brand itself with one of the world’s most trusted and recognized charities.

Your sponsorship dollars provide the necessary fund-ing to launch and support the

Santa Shuf e, while affording local exposure to your busi-ness.

Just like Santa, The Salvation Army takes on big challenges, providing basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter to more than 1.8 mil-lion Canadians in need each year.

The gifts they give to vulner-able people include affordable housing, respite care, food hampers, shelter services and support for families.

Each year, more than 16,000 Canadians participate in the

Santa Shuf e and enjoy time with family and friends to help neighbours in need.

The day starts with a great warm-up and after the run, each participant is handed a nisher’s medal to celebrate their accomplishment and highlight their commitment to building a stronger com-munity.

To nd out how you can be-come a Santa Shuf e sponsor, contact Laura Van Schaick by E-mail, [email protected] or call 250-255-5238.

Another race week-end has come to an end for Quesnel’s North Cariboo Mud Racers Association and wow, is all the North Cariboo Mud Racers Associa-tion had to say. The president of the club, Bill Lefebvre, was extremely impressed with the truck count that was over double the number, com-pared to the past few years. With a new event added this year called Hill’n’Hole Racing, we had high flying action from local trucks to purpose-built race vehicles from all over B.C. and Alberta.

“It was a great turn out for trucks and the rain on Satur-day didn’t slow us down,” Lefebvre said.

“Sunday the sun came out and the spectator count tripled. We really appreciate the sup-port of the spectators in the last few years, which helped us put on such a great show.”

The NCMRA facility is one

of a kind in B.C., being a per-manent race track designed and dedicated to mud racing. This allows us to prepare our track for Canada’s fastest blown alcohol class race vehicles, such as Steve Strell’s Overdraft.

Overdraft came to Quesnel with full intentions of captur-

ing another new record, falling short by .01 of a second. The crowd loved the Hill’n’Hole action that saw trucks flying 10 feet in the air over mud pits. A set great big thank you to all local racers that came out to get dirty, catch air and win trophies that helped make our event

such a success. Quesnel’s 2015 Royalty

joined us on Sunday and had the honour of handing out the well-deserved trophies for each of the 10 different race classes. NCMRA would not have been able to promote this event with-out the assistance of our amaz-

ing local businesses. Thank you again Quesnel! Save the dates, we promise a bigger and even better show for August 27 – 28, 2016.
