Question 2; How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Page 2: Question 2
Page 3: Question 2

- The magazine ‘VINYL’ is meant to target a younger audience mainly teenagers who like Indie music. Therefore to target this specific audience, i have used teenage models on my front cover and throughout my magazine to maintain this point. In some of the language used on my double page spread, it can be seen as quite stereotypical with a mixture of formal and informal language. From this the audience can relate to the artists. The use of some colloquial language can target this audience even more however to an extent in which older people would understand it aswell.

- The font I used in my magazine is ‘Impact’. This font is simple and easy to read which can also symbolise some stereotypes of teenagers related to Indie music. I never used messy fonts which are quite large as this may signify another genre such as; R&B. I chose this font because I thought teenagers would find this appealing to look at.

- The use of mise en scene contributes to the way in which my magazine represents social groups. For example, on the front cover I have the band dressed in very casual clothes such as; leather jackets, jeans, plain tops and biker boots because this is the ‘indie look’ therefore people can relate to them by identifying the genre. The use of colours go very well together; the colour black can signify mysteriousness however adding grey can make things look more positive although it is still a dark colour. The use of colours can represent teenagers as being united aswell as erratic.

- I have also used props in my magazine; Electric guitar, drums and piano which all can be seen as stereotypical instruments within the Indie genre.

- Some features in the images used can be seen as stereotypical. For example the images on the contents page, a female playing a piano and a male playing drums. It can be seen as stereotypical for a male to play drums as they are very loud instruments which portray boys as being lively people. On the other hand; the girl playing the piano can be seen as innocent which shows girls are more calm and ‘relaxed’ than boys.

• In the double page spread, we can see the other side of the band as more fun and energetic. We can see them united on the front cover whereas in the double page spread its about them showing music is also about having fun and expressing feelings. This can be explained by the slogan used on the front cover; ‘Love music to love life’

• The poses can signify many things due to the shots used. On the front cover the band look mature however this can be subverted in the double page spread where it shows some stereotypes of teenagers as being silly and immature however in a fun way. The low angle shot in the double page spread emphasises the point.

• I tried to represent my social group in two different ways as some people may get the wrong perspective of teenagers in society.
