EVALUATION ACTIVITY 7:

LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE

LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?

BY ALEX WARNER

WHAT WE DID FOR OUR PRELIMINARY TASK:

During the beginning of the year, we made a preliminary task in which we had to make a short film of someone walking though a

door, sitting down and then having a conversation. We did this task to practice and to learn how to use different shots such as the 180

degree rule, match on action and shot/reverse shot. We used a camcorder and a tripod to film our preliminary task.

DIFFERENT SHOTS WITHIN THE PRELIMINARY TASK:

Match on action: We got our character within our preliminary task to walk towards the door, pull the handle down, open the door and then walk though. We used 5 different shots to show this to make the action look more natural and smooth.

For the editing we had each clip timed right so that each part of the action during the film matched and added up to make the action look natural.

DIFFERENT SHOTS WITHIN THE PRELIMINARY TASK:

180 degree rule: We got our two characters to sit on a table either side of each other to keep the action on one side of the camera thought the scene, this allows the audience to not get confused as if the rule is broken it looks like there on the same side of the table

(shots during our preliminary task)

During the making of our preliminary task we made the scene with the two charters talking wrong as they are both on the same side of the shot during the action, this breaks the 180 rule therefore making the action confusing to the audience.

WRONG RIGHT

DIFFERENT SHOTS WITHIN THE PRELIMINARY TASK:

Shot reverse shot: Shot reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. We did this by our two characters talking to each other while at the table.

(shots of shot reverse shot in our preliminary task)

We did our shot reverse shot to show the two characters talking to each other however due to the 180 degree rule and how we broke it, the shot reverse shot doesn’t work however you can still understand the dialogue of the video and what's happening even though the 180 degree rule is broken

EDITING THE PRELIMINARY TASK: I-movie: we used i-movie on the school apple macs to edit our preliminary task, we learnt a lot of different techniques on this software which taught us and got us prepared for our thriller opening

Once we uploaded the footage it was easy to see on I-movie what shots we wanted to use and what shots we didn’t, this allowed us to pick the right shots.

We edited the preliminary task by cutting down the clips and making sure all the action matched within the task. Cutting clips allowed us to trim down the shots so that there not to long nor to short

WHAT WE LEARNT FROM THE PRELIMINARY TASK THAT WE USED IN OUR FINAL OPENING:

Preliminary task Final opening

Match on action Match on action

From what we learnt in the preliminary task, we wanted to show match on action as it allows the action within the

opening to move much more naturally

Shots of our character

walking though a door and opening it

Shots of Scarlet and her friend

hugging and the pulling away and

talking

180 degree rule 180 degree rule Shots of our characters

talking to each other

Shots of Scarlet in her bed,

establishing shot of her bed and

tracking shots of her in bed

From what we learnt in the preliminary task we wanted to use the 180 degree rule and do it right, so we experimented with different

shots but decided to use our first shot of scarlet to be shot by using the 180 degree rule

WHAT WE LEARNT FROM THE PRELIMINARY TASK THAT WE USED IN OUR FINAL OPENING:

Preliminary task Final opening

We edited our

preliminary task in I-movie

We edited our final cut and rough

cut in I-movie

From what we learnt in our preliminary task we also used the same techniques for our final cut.

We cut clips very finely so that when all the clips where put together the action on screen would be very fast paced and shows stress and confusion

within our opening

We experimented with different sound types by layering sound on top of each other to add the effect of a busy

party within the party scene

During the tracking shots, we sped them up on I-movie to make the action move faster

and flow nicer

At the beginning and end of our final cut we used transitions to open and close our

opening

We used many different types of techniques on

I-movie:

EVALUATION OF WHAT WE LEARNT FROM THE PRELIMINARY TASK:

Compared to our preliminary task and our final cut of our opening, you can clearly see the difference in quality between the two and you can see how we have progressed and learnt between the time of us making them both.
