A media institution is a company that is in charge of a media text. This could be through either marketing, production and distribution. Nowadays most films have high budgets and in order to make a profit and cover costs media institutions have to strategically market and promote their films in order for them to successful and one way to do that would be using the right distribution company for that specific film

Our media product is a horror film opening so we conducted research into which distribution companies that are famous for distributing horror films and found that there was large a variety of companies we could chose from.

Lionsgate: Lionsgate is a Canadian-American film production/distribution studio and a division of Lions Gate Entertainment. It is the largest and most successful mini-major film studio in North America. It focuses on foreign and independent films and has distributed various commercially successful film series, such as parts of the Twighlight sagas, The Hunger Games and Saw .

The reasons:

One of the main reasons we chose Lionsgate Film would be that it has brought us famous and successful horror films such as Saw and The Last Exorcism, both of these films had relatively low budgets of around a million pounds each and ended up grossing well past 50 million pounds for both of them. Another factor as is that Lionsgate Films are very experienced when it comes to releasing horror films and gaining phenomenal amounts of profit compared to their original budgets, the reason being they have the resources around the world to successfully market and distribute them.

Ways Lionsgate could distribute our film

They have forged a lot of partnerships over the years and also have many smaller companies under their wing and even co-own the tv channels CBS and POP TV. This allows them advertise much more easier and is an example of synergy where large multi-media corporations us their vast span to advertise their products. Lionsgate films also has forged good connections with large cinemas around the UK such as VUE and Cineworld. This allows them to distribute films easily throughout the UK would benefit us as it would eliminate the need to find cinemas that would be willing to show our film.
