    Questionnaire evaluation

In the process of researching my video genre I undertook in creating a serve

which I posted on the social media site facebook to gather information and

opinions from a varied audience. From this I managed to gather nineteen

responses all of which gave me a generally reliable understanding, and

provided me with a wide audience which allowed me to choose an appropriate

    target audience.

When researching my target audience I used a general open question which

would instantly allowed me to think and consider what age range I wanted to

aim my video at. My initial thoughts of creating a horror film were to aim myvideo at 15s and above. My results have backed up my thoughts of not

creating a film for 0-12 as it is inappropriate for a PG rating; this is due to the

fact that nobody at this age group who answered my questionnaire watches

horror films. However, my results did show me that 89.47% of the 19 people

whom answered my questionnaire were 13 to 20 years old which roughly

fitted the target audience I initially thought of. I also found out that 2 people

who answered my questionnaire were 21+.

From my questionnaire I found out that 84.21% (16) females watch horror

films opposed to the 15.79% (3) males who watch horror films. This could be

an error in my research, as I could have posted my research differently by

giving my research to an equal number of males and females. However, the

use of a higher amount of females whom watch horror films allows me to go

down a different root and has provided me with other ideas for a horror film

instead of having a stereotypical horror, where females are viewed as weak,

    passive and in distress.

I asked a closed question Do you watch horrors/ thrillers on a regular basis. I

gave a selection of options which I thought were appropriate. This enabled meto add an element of control over the question to allow me to gather the

    results that I needed. From this question I found out that;

My results allowed me perceive that horror is not necessarily peoples first

choice of film, however is still viewed as a relevant and popular genre. This led

me to understand that an interesting horror film can still attract a relevant

    audience.

Following on from the previous question I asked why those who watch them

regularly or sometimes why they actually watch horror films. These were a few

    of my responses.

The majority of my results showed that people usually watch horror films in

the presents of their friends which suggest that they are used as a focus of a

social gathering. Some of my findings tell me that around 50% of the peoplewho answered this questionnaire enjoy horror films purely for the scare factor.

However a few of my results commented on their enjoyment of horrors due to

realistic characters that the viewers can relate to. One of the main things that

were mentioned a few times was the use of light and how it can create

different moods and tension through the film, which is enjoyable.

    After reviewing this questionnaire I have noticed that I have made an error;

which in the future I will insure that I change. This is where I havent included a

question for those who dont watch horrors often; this question would allow

me to see why they dont, and if its due to something that they do not like

    about them.

What aspects of horror/thriller films interest you?

From this question I found out a range of important factors that viewers think

are crucial in a horror film one of the highest factors was the plot, this is a clear

indication to me that the plot needs to be strong in order for people to be fully

entertained. Eerie music and the scare factor were the second highest which

tells me that I need to make sure that I incorporate both of these in order to

    have a successful horror film.

In this question I also provided an other option to make sure that I knew

    exactly what interests people. My other results;

What do you think about the music in horror films? How does it make you

    feel?

Most of the results that I received clearly stated that the use of music is there

to create a tense atmosphere. The majority of my results have shown me that

music is vital to the viewers as it is used to create a scare factor which allows

    the audience to feel engaged.

How do characters in a horror film make you feel?

My results showed a varied range of answers most of them however seem to

show that the viewers develop an emotional attachment to characters and

therefore find the film more entertaining and engaging.

What are your expectations for horror/ thriller films?

My results have shown me that jump scares are essential in horror films as

they add an element of excitement and fright which has proven to be

important to the audience when watching a horror film.

Overall, from my questionnaire I have leant that I should aim my video at 15s

and above, I have also learnt that I should consider aiming my video specifically

at females as my questionnaire has shown that more females watch and enjoy

horror films. My questionnaire has also allowed me to consider making a film

using counter typical females to represent the strong heroic characters

opposed to the weak passive types that are shown in most horror films.

My questionnaire has also allowed me to consider and evaluate what aspects

of a horror film are most important to the viewers and which I should

    incorporate into my production.
