Superintendent’s Thoughts

Dr. Gretta Kumpf

You can feel the excitement in our buildings as the end of the school year nears us. This is especially true for our seniors who are, no doubt, counting the hours until their final day of classes on Friday, May 19th. Yet, I suspect these students are also a bit melancholy as they enjoy their last THS experiences. There are a host of activities for them before they receive their diplomas at graduation on Saturday, May 27th. This week is Wellness Week that includes themed days, an assembly, class picnic, and prom. The following week includes the Senior Community Service Day when students will make an impact by volunteering in the community. And, perhaps one of my most anticipated activities is the College and Career Signing Day scheduled for Friday, May 26th beginning at 9:30 a.m. This new event is a chance to highlight our seniors’ next steps in their journeys and congratulate them on their employment, college, or military decisions. It is an opportunity to recognize their commitment and inspire students in grades 8 to eleven who will be in attendance. Parents are invited to share in this ceremony!

Be the Bridge

Congratulations to Tippecanoe High School senior Mitchell Colvin who was chosen as a 2017 Dayton Power and Light Company Student of Integrity. This is the 15th year the Better Business Bureau Center’s for Business Consumer Ethics has recognized Miami Valley seniors who exemplify strong ethics and integrity. He is a member of the Interact Service and Spanish Clubs, varsity soccer team captain, was selected to be a HOBY Delegate for Ohio Southwest and honored as a GWOC and CBC Scholar Athlete. Mitchell is dedicated to helping those in need and does so by volunteering for organizations, such as the Needy Basket, 4PAWS and his church, Christian Life Center. With plans to study exercise science with a minor in Spanish, Mitchell’s goal is to become a physical therapist for Doctors Without Borders.

Congratulations to Tippecanoe High School students Allie Wasson and Leena Vyas who were chosen as delegates to attend the 2017 District 6670 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp. The students were selected based on their leadership abilities in school, church, extracurricular, or community activities. Lori Willoughby, local committee chair, stated that, "The Tipp City Rotary Club was among the 52 Rotary Clubs in District 6670 that sponsored high school students who developed leadership potential together at Camp Kern, during a weekend camp designed and headed up by highly trained, experienced leaders representing a wide range of vocations." The camp featured outstanding speakers and workshops, focusing on decision making, critical thinking, communicating effectively, public service, problem solving, and career development. Pictured left to right are: Olivia Rust (Bethel), Racheal Tingley (Bethel), Allie Wasson (Tippecanoe) and Leena Vyas (Tippecanoe).

Congratulations

Congratulations to Tippecanoe Middle School teacher Jennifer Nickol who was accepted into the Code.org Professional Learning Community. Code.org’s Professional Learning Program is an intensive, year-long training for middle school educators interested in teaching Code.org’s CS Discoveries. Participants will explore CS curriculum and tools, experiment with specific teaching strategies, and join a local community of teachers using this curriculum. Teachers who are accepted must:

Attend the five-day, in-person summer workshop;

Attend four local one-day, in-person workshops (normally on Saturdays);

Complete 20 hours of online professional development;

Teach the course during the 2017-18 school year;

Support the recruitment and enrollment of a diverse group of students in the course, representative of the school’s overall student population.

Code.org, a non-profit that organizes the annual Hour of Code campaign, covers the cost of training programs. The vision “is that every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science.”

TMS Teacher Selected for Unique Professional Development Opportunity

Congratulations to April’s Bridge Builders of the Month, an initiative to acknowledge staff members building positive bridges with students, families, colleagues, or the community. In keeping with the district’s theme, Be the Bridge, employees nominate a colleague for this recognition. In the front row are Kari Hake, Nevin Coppock Elementary; Dr. Gretta Kumpf, superintendent; Kim Hampton, Broadway Elementary. In the back row are Liz Makley, LT Ball Intermediate and Tippecanoe High School; Jennifer Nickol, Tippecanoe Middle School; Greg Chaney, Board of Education; Karen Behr, Transportation. Thank you for making a difference!

Congratulations to Tippecanoe Middle School student Jianna Nichols who won a coveted spot to attend and compete at the National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo (NICEE) which will be held next month in Washington, DC. The idea to develop a wristband that detects red dye in foods received high marks which have qualified her to move on to the National Competition in June. Out of over 7,500 students who participated in their local invention convention programs throughout our state this year, the 6th grader has been selected as one of the 75 to represent Ohio at the national competition. This is an invitation-only event, hosted by the STEMIE Coalition. The STEMIE Coalition is a non-profit organization that has affiliate Invention Convention programs in states all across the country to further inventing and entrepreneurship education in K-12 students.

TMS Student Advances to National Competition

Some outstanding Broadway Elementary students read their way to success to become “Principal for a Day.” The students got their new job after earning more than one hundred points in the Accelerated Reading program, a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently, and take a comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. Pictured in the front row left to right are Logan Roach, Eli Kettel, Lukas Heitbrink, Penny Bathgate, Quinn Gagnon. In the back row left to right are Connor George, Carson Jackson, Leilani Green, and their beloved principal Tina Smith. These students say they love to read and enjoyed spending the day with their principal and the opportunity to go out to lunch with her.

Learning What it Takes to be a Principal

The Inferno Book Release Party at the Roller Miller was a huge success and brilliant display of student talent. The Inferno is a student created literary journal. Thirty student authors read to a standing room only crowd their literary works on an array of subjects including gender identification, government, social injustice, and the Women’s March. The quality and creativity of their writings are a true testament to Tippecanoe High School's outstanding English Department. Kudos to teachers Erin Hill and Aimee Noel for giving students the opportunity to express themselves so eloquently and call themselves published authors! Thank you to the Tippecanoe Educational Endowment and the Tipp City Area Community Foundations for financially supporting this project!

It started with two days of pampering as the technicians from Pretty Nails and beauticians from Broadway Hair Studio donated their talents to get some Tippecanoe High School girls ready for their prom. Sponsored by the Miami County Educational Service Center, the prom included dancing, a catered lunch, the crowning of the king and queen, door prizes, photographs, and beautiful memories. Thank you to all who made this day for our students possible!

Tippecanoe High School's foreign exchange student, Yuri Nakayama, invited other foreign exchange students who are attending school in the Dayton area to visit THS. The visit was a great opportunity for our students to learn about different cultures and how a teenager's life in another country differs. Students attended Leadership and Pop Culture classes, shadowed THS students, ate lunch with the ESL students and participated in an open panel discussion. The group then toured the Tipp City community. The visitors say their time in the United States has been terrific. They hope to encourage THS students to consider becoming or hosting a foreign exchange student through AFS.

TMS Spring Band Concert

The Tippecanoe Middle School bands held their spring concert to culminate the end of this school year. The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands performed under the direction of Emily Brinkman and Steve Parks. It is beautiful to hear how much the students have developed their musical abilities.

TMS Spring Choir Concert

Members of the Tippecanoe Middle School choirs looked and sounded beautiful at their spring concert. Under the

direction of Amanda Hughes, the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade choirs did a terrific job entertaining the audience with an

assortment of music.

What a Special Night

Take me out to the ballgame took on new meaning for some Broadway Elementary third graders. Students in the class of April R. Taylor had the honor to perform the National Anthem at a Dragon’s game. It just might be a once in a lifetime experience for these very excited children. They performed beautifully under the direction of Jennifer Wightman who was just as excited!

LT Ball Intermediate students set up their store fronts to attract customers and sell their wares at the annual Mini Mall. Students learned about product research, manufacturing, cost analysis, break-even points, pricing, marketing, displays and sales. The students made an assortment of goods to sell and did an outstanding job in their new roles.

Program

Broadway Elementary students in the classes of Jessica Martin and Kim O’Brien touched a snake, turtle, rabbit and other critters by winning the Nature Quest challenge to read the most nature books and complete the correlating activities. The Miami County Parks Nature Quest Program encourages families to increase their time together doing activities and exploring outside. It is estimated that children are spending half as much time outside as they did 20 years ago.

“Red Carpet”

The Tippecanoe High School Parents Who Care is rolling out the red carpet (literally) at the 2017 Prom on May 20th. Parents,

family members and friends are invited to get a glimpse and photos of the students dressed in their finest beginning at 7:00 p.m.

at the Antioch Shrine. Please use off-street parking so that students have convenient access to the parking lots.

The Tippecanoe High School Art Club enjoyed an after school field trip to the Dayton Art Institute to explore the different artists and art movements. DAI has a diverse permanent collection, special exhibitions, art classes and family programs. The permanent collection contains more than 26-thousand objects spanning 5-thousand years of art history. About one thousand works from this collection are on display at any time.

COSI AMAZEMENT and DISCOVERIES Nothing says science learning is fun quite like a day at COSI, Center of Science and Industry. Touted as a dynamic hands-on science center that is fun for all ages, it did not disappoint LT Ball Intermediate students. They had a blast visiting exhibits, attending live shows, and playing at the big science park. Thank you Tippecanoe Educational Endowment and Tipp City Area Community Foundations for helping to finance this field trip.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE CLINIC

All medications must be picked up on the last day of school, June 1, 2017. Medications not

picked up will be properly disposed of on that date. All non-emergent medication in the clinic

such as cough drops, eye drops, and pain medications for non-emergent cases should be

picked up by MAY 25, 2017.

Keep saving the pull tabs from soda cans and other products to help the Dayton Ronald McDonald House Tab-A-PULL-ooza pull tab contest. This friendly contest is a great way to show children the benefits of recycling and helping others when people “pull” together. Pull tabs are taken to the First Street Recycling Center to be recycled for their salvage value. Revenue generated from the pull tabs benefits the local Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for families of children being treated at Dayton Children’s Hospital. The LT Ball Intermediate School kitchen will accept donations until May 19th.
