Quick News Superintendent’s Thoughts
Dr. Gretta Kumpf
Typically the front page of Quick News boasts notes of congratulations to our awesome students for their outstanding achievements. I greatly treasure the opportunity to applaud our students’ successes in the classroom, on stage, and on the field. This week I want to congratulate our students for being kind and spreading joy! The smiles and laughter in the pictures are contagious and the stories they tell are truly heartwarming. Promoting kindness, acceptance, and caring behaviors is part of our school day but we often fail to recognize just how important this is for students. Scientific studies prove there are many emotional and mental health benefits associated with kindness. Being kind increases happiness, decreases stress, and fosters a sense of belonging. Acts of kindness heighten our sense of well-being, optimism, and self-worth. Having a positive outlook is also linked to better results at school. Being kind increases one’s serotonin which plays an important role in learning, memory, mood, and sleep. Kindness not only spreads joy, it brings joy. Thank you to our staff and families for modeling kindness and encouraging our students to spread joy! Even a simple smile can brighten a person’s day!

Broadway Students Learn Kindness Counts
LT Ball Intermediate student Mackenzie Currier and her service dog Electra traveled to Broadway Elementary School to show students their special bond as part of the school’s Kindness Counts program. Her mom Katie talked with the 2nd and 3rd graders about the role of service dogs, the training process for service animals, and how Electra helps Mackenzie. An Autism Assistance Dog such as Electra helps children with social interactions, assists in calming emotions, and eases anxiety in crowded situations. A behavior common to autism is a tendency to explore and wander away. The dogs are trained to learn the scent of the child and can bring the parent or handler to the child. Electra was trained by 4 Paws for Ability.
Spreading Joy Through Physical Education Classes
LT Ball Intermediate 5th graders brought their dance steps and charm to the residents of Spring Mead and Randall Residence. The service trip culminates a physical education unit on social dancing. Thank you to teacher Jeanne Koch who teaches them how to waltz, do the polka, and spread joy. The students performed several dances for the residents and then asked them to join in for some belated Valentine’s Day fun.

THE TMS ROCK STARS
The Tippecanoe Middle School 7th grade social studies classes of Cindy Wildermuth and Geoff Enze were treated to a guest speaker who shared information about her home country of Japan. Haruno Asari who lives with her family in Troy has been in the United States for 2 years and will be here another 2 years before returning to Japan with her husband’s company. She gave the students a brief overview of Japanese history and current culture by quizzing the students and rewarding them with Japanese candy for correct answers. She then shared examples of Japanese culture through various foods she brought with her. She asked for volunteers to taste some of the items she brought. A couple of lucky students in each class got to taste fermented beans as well as two different kinds of Japanese omelets. The classes completed a unit on Japanese history and culture.
