R-22 REPLACEMENT, WHY REPLACE?
If you have Air Conditioning in your workplace that is 10 years old or more, there
is every possibility, even if it is still working OK, that it is coming to the end of its
serviceable life – by law!
REGULATIONHCFC R-22 refrigerant is the most widely used in air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration equipment in the world, however it is classified as an ozone-depleting substance and is the subject of a phase-out programme under the European Community (EC) Regulation no. 2037/2000. From Dec 2014 it will become illegal to use HCFC R-22, virgin or reclaimed, in any AC, heat pump or refrigeration equipment for service or maintenance purposes.
LEGISLATION The Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD) requires that all air conditioning systems with an effective rated output of more than 12kW must be regularly inspected by an Energy Assessor; the inspections must be no more than 5 years apart. Systems >250kW should have been inspected by 4th Jan 2009; systems >12kW should have been inspected by 4th Jan 2011 (systems installed on or after 1st Jan 2008 must have their first inspection within 5 years of being put to service).

FACT: R-410A is ozone benign and is proven to be more energy efficient than R-22.
It may seem galling that European regulation and legislation appears to be forcing us to replace equipment that we might have expected to last perhaps another 5 or even 10 years with appropriate maintenance. Like it or not, we do have environmental responsibilities and the regulation and legislation we refer to here is all about that. Tough though it may be to find the financial resource to comply, particularly when recovering from a period of recession, replacing equipment still operating with R-22 refrigerant will actually pay substantial dividends in terms of reduced operating and maintenance costs – at a price per kW that is actually lower today than it was when the equipment was new!

THE VRV–IIIQ SYSTEM
Daikin’s VRV systems are among the most energy efficient, reliable, flexible and
sophisticated systems on the market today. Many existing VRV systems (the original
system of it’s type established in 1982) will be nearing the end of their life cycle-
either due to age or prematurely as a result of the HCFC (R-22) refrigerant phase-out.

DIRECT REPLACEMENT VRVQ Daikin’s VRVQ has been introduced to reduce the cost and disruption of replacing an existing older VRV system, the latest innovation in the extensive Daikin VRV range. Historically it has not been possible to replace R-22 systems without also replacing all the interconnecting pipework due to high risk of damage/contamination. Pipework often follows complex routes and is a semi-permanent fixture, therefore difficult and very costly to remove or replace. VRVQ enables existing pipework and some types of indoor fan coil units to be re-used, subject to site survey findings.

Technologies of VRV®III-Q
Reduced Pressure
As R-22 VRV® systems used to work on a lower pressure than R-410A
systems; thus the copper refrigerant piping was also designed for
these lower pressures. Therefore the Replacement VRV® (VRV®III-Q)
must operate at lower pressures than the standard VRV®III series.
However thanks to the sub cool circuit a high efficiency level can
be kept even with the lower pressures.
When replacing an air conditioning system, the piping is normally
replaced as well since traces of old refrigerant and oil mixed with
the oil and refrigerant of the new system can cause the equipment
to malfunction.
In order to allow re-use of existing R-22 piping with an R-410A
system Daikin developed a technology to capture and retain the
contamination left in the refrigerant piping. During the charging of
the system, R-410A refrigerant starts circulating through the copper
piping collecting the contamination left in the refrigerant piping.
The refrigerant including the remaining oil from the R-22 system
is filtered in the outdoor unit and the contamination is deposited
in the outdoor unit. This process is executed only once and takes
about 1 hour (depending on system characteristics). Daikin is the
first manufacturer in the industry to develop this combination
of automatic charging and refrigerant pipe cleaning function.

at a considerable rate the VRV range has expanded and now includes geothermal

When the VRV heat recovery system is in cooling mode, waste heat is recovered and transferred from the refrigerant cycle to the water circuit via the hydro-box boiler to produce freehot water.

HEAT RECOVERY VENTILATIONEfficient ventilation is a key element of the Part F regulations.
