from Father Bill PromessoBlessed Solanus Casey When Father Solanus Casey is beatified Saturday as “Blessed Solanus,” the legendary Detroit Catholic priest will become an even greater inspiration, and rarity. The Capuchin Franciscan will be the third American-born person to be beatified in the U.S. He’ll become one of three Americans who currently hold the title of Blessed, one step away from being named a Catholic saint. By a decree of Pope Francis, Casey will be honored because Catholic officials say a Panamanian woman’s prayer at Casey’s tomb in Detroit was answered by a miracle: her skin disease healed through his intercession. Nearly 70,000 people — from parishes across metro Detroit as well as Ireland, Italy, Guam and Panama — are expected to pack Ford Field for the beatification ceremony. About 500 priests will be in attendance, including 235 brown-robed Capuchin friars and four red-robed Catholic cardinals. (Detroit Free Press Nov 12)
World Day of the PoorThe conjunction of the beatification and the World Day of the Poor announced by Pope Francis is an affirmation of Fr. Solanus’ ministry at St. Bonaventure Monastery, but also the efforts of many people who serve the poor at our own parish. This week our pantry clients received their makings for a Thanksgiving Feast with turkeys and trimmings donated by you. Many people who endure poverty in our neighborhood rely on us to help them stay healthy so they can work and care for their families, pay bills and get medication. May we continue to serve the poor under the inspiration of Fr. Solanus and Pope Francis. Amen.

What a Turn-out!The Worship Commission and I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who attended our “Liturgical Minister’s Day.” We hope you were inspired in your ministry, learned about the other ministries and renewed your skills.
It was great to have the opportunity to meet so many of you face to face and it was fantastic to see the different ministries enjoying their time together.
I strongly believe that as liturgical ministers we are called to be leaders in our parish community. Your prayerful participation, dedication and constant positive attitude in striving to make St. Cyprian Church a great place to worship speaks volumes!

ConfirmationLast Sunday we held our first mega session with the Confirmation Candidates and their sponsors. The pairs worked together to complete the St. Cyprian Confirmation Inventory: What Every Fully-Initiated Catholic Should Know. The inventory covers the topics of bible, faith/belief, liturgy/sacraments, morality/social teaching and the Church both local and global. It was a great learning experience and refresher course for all. Fr. Bill was the facilitator and reviewed the answers with the group and also gave some history of the church and its traditions. The feedback from the sponsors was very good, they enjoyed the afternoon with the candidates and re-learning specifics about their religion. If you are interested in testing your knowledge you can find the test on our parish website.
Bottle refundsThank you to all of you who are donating your returnable bottles and cans to the youth group. We have collected over $400 since
summer. The money will help the pilgrims going to World Youth Day and the Youth Group in general. Please keep the clean and rinsed can and bottles coming in. There are designated cans by the social hall doors closest to the church and in the vestibule by the education wing. We appreciate your continued support!

Exercising our gratitude muscles
Expressing gratitude isn’t just a good thing to do; it also appears to be good for us! Indiana University researchers found that participants who performed gratitude-focused writing exercises felt uplifted, and were more likely to express gratefulness through generosity, even weeks later.
Furthermore, brain scans revealed increased gratitude-related activity even months down the road (New York Magazine).
Though the study was small, we seem to have a “gratitude muscle” that can be strengthened through exercise. If so, there may be more than we thought to the popularity of gratitude journals and Mom’s insistence that we write thank-you notes. Not to mention the biblical call to “give thanks to the LORD, for he is good” (1 Chronicles 16:34, for example).
Might God have hardwired us for gratitude — not only at Thanksgiving but year round — because it’s good for us as well as for those we thank? To that, we respond, “Thanks be to God!” (newsletternewsletter.com)

Blanket MakingLast Sunday the Family Faith Committee held their annual blanket making event. This is always a favorite night for all that attend. This year we had 50 people show up with fleece in hand to make blankets while enjoying each other’s company. At the end of the two-hour event we had at least 40 blankets finished and several taken home to be brought back. What a pleasure it was to see kids working with their parents and/or grandparents and friends with friends. We had some people who made blankets for the very first time and others who have made many. Everyone was willing to help each other and to teach new techniques. The blankets will be donated to various locations such as Karmanos, Crisis Pregnancy Center, the Interim House and the Veterans. We also will give some to the homeless. Every bit of fleece will be used, even the scraps. The corner squares will be sewn into blankets by the crafters and the scraps will be sewn into pillows that will be donated to the Humane Society. This event truly follows what it means to Unleash the Gospel. We are coming together as a faith community and reaching out to all those in the greatest of need. Thank you all for attending and making the blankets and to those who couldn’t attend but donated fleece or made the blankets at home.Stacey Sutowski-ShurtzDirector of Elementary Catechesis and Youth Ministry

Stewardship Thoughts Today’s Scripture passages express good stewarding of God’s gifts. The Book of Proverbs describes a good wife not only as a true blessing, but also as a good steward in using the Lord’s gifts. St. Paul, in his First Letter to the Thessalonians, reminds faithful stewards to be prepared for the Lord’s coming. They are not to fear the darkness, for they are gifted to be children of the light. St. Matthew’s Gospel teaches stewardship through the parable about the master — God — who entrusts property to his servants while he is away. The servants symbolize us as we strive to deepen our relationship in Christ. The “talents” — money, in that day — represent gifts (charisms) that God, through the Holy Spirit, bestows upon us. It is important to note that in this parable, the servants are given gifts according to their ability. To the master’s delight, the servant granted the five talents invests these talents and makes five more. Likewise, the servant given two talents doubles them. On the other hand, the lazy servant who does nothing with his talent is punished. Faithful stewards who use God’s gifts to fulfill Christ’s mission on earth will inherit the kingdom of God. In gratitude for His many blessings, we are called to bring our gifts to the altar of the Lord each week to build His kingdom. Our parishes are always in need of ministers at Mass and members for different councils, commissions, and committees, as well as catechists and school volunteers. All gifts of service are blessed and appreciated.
