Dear Generation Z
students,
You may wonder why
students need to be en-
gaged in cutting-edge
research. Research is an
endless process of en-
deavor. People always
highly reward new – big
ideas, because big ideas
built on curiosity and
hardwork are drivers of
human development and
progress. Research skills
such as problem solving, critical thinking, working in a team, qualitative
and quantitative data analytical skills as well as academic writing and
public speaking are highly demanded in the labor market and graduate
programs today. Research – discovery process is one way to develop
your skills, pursue your own ideas and become independent and life-
long learners.
Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) has high po-
tential to cultivate and support research collaboration between students
and faculty. We are excited to represent the WIUT Research Society, a
platform that brings together talented students from different subject
areas to facilitate and celebrate research activity. International experi-
ence and capacity of WIUT faculty, modern research tools for business
and social sciences, and students` strong desire to learn, together bring
big research opportunities and interdisciplinary collaboration for the uni-
versity.
Joining the Research Society benefits range from building meaningful
connections with faculty and other students who share similar interests,
applying classroom learning to real-world problems to co-authoring pa-
pers, attending international conferences, patenting inventions or
launching a start-up. We plan to organize our first International Under-
graduate Research Conference, that will be run by Research Socie-
ty members for all students, including undergraduate students from
abroad. Stay tuned and engaged in research – exciting news is coming
soon!

Interview with Dr. Dilshod Ibragimov, senior lec-
turer at WIUT. He has a PhD in Computer Sci-
ence from the Université libre de Bruxelles, Bel-
gium and is currently teaching Decision Support
and Data Mining Systems module and Systems
Analysis and Design module.
Dr. Ibragimov – you have defended your PhD
thesis in Computer Science titled "Optimizing
Analytical Queries over Semantic Web Sources"
in November 2017. Congratulations on your
achievement! Why have you chosen this field?
What motivated/interested you to pursue your
PhD in this topic and abroad?
Business Intelligence is a very trendy research area
right now. It encompasses many scientific and tech-
nological fields including data warehousing, data
mining, content analytics, business process man-
agement, visual analytics, and requires competenc-
es in information systems, web science, decision
science, and software engineering. This field lets me
try various ideas using scientific methods and work
on real-world problems applying mathematical mod-
els and machine learning techniques. Through the
collection, analysis and interpretation of data, ma-
chine learning helps me understand how humans
make decisions and improve algorithms to optimize
the decision-making outcomes.
Since 2013, I was a student in the Erasmus Mundus
Joint Doctorate in Information Technologies for Busi-
ness Intelligence – Doctoral College (IT4BI-DC) pro-
gramme. I chose the IT4BI-DC programme because
it is a well-organized programme. The curriculum is
jointly delivered by associated partners from around
the world include top-ranked universities, leading
industries in Business Intelligence, public and pri-
vate research organizations, R&D companies, con-
sulting companies, and public authorities. IT4BI-DC
provides doctoral candidates with a high-level edu-
cation and training programme comprising Research
-specific courses, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
courses, Methodological and Communication cours-
es, Language courses, Organization of and partici-
pation in scientific events, and Internships. Each
doctoral candidate is engaged on a research topic
proposed by two institutions (i.e., home and host).
The Doctorate thesis is co-supervised by two profes-
sors, one from each of the proponent institutions us-
ing a co-tutelle model.
Can you tell us something about your PhD learn-
ing and defense process? What was the most
interesting and the most difficult part for you?
During the first two months after the enrolment, I to-
gether with my co-advisors, drafted a Doctoral Pro-
ject Plan (DPP), which formulated and concretized
the elements involved in the research process. The
DPP specified my coursework and training pro-
gramme taking into account my previous education-
al background. In addition, the DPP specified the
expected student mobility periods between the host
university—Aalborg University & the home universi-
ty—Free University of Brussels.
With respect to the student mobility, I started the first
semester at the home university, spent the second
semester at the host university, and then returned
for one year back to the home university. In my third
year I started my studies in the host university and
then returned to the home university for the second
semester.
Further, I had shorter stays at the host university for
meeting my advisors and taking some courses.

THREE MILESTONES OF DILSHOD
(continued on next page)
Dr. Dilshod Ibragimov

Thus, I spent at least 33% of my doctorate at the
host Aalborg university.
I achieved three milestones within this programme:
at the end of my first year, I presented my Thesis
Proposal Report (TPR, extended DPP version); at
the end of my second year, I presented my Re-
search Progress Report (RPP), including a descrip-
tion of the main issues, preliminary research results,
and an action plan for the remaining work; and at
the end of my study, I submitted my Doctoral Thesis.
During my PhD studies, I participated in the Europe-
an Business Intelligence Summer School (eBISS)
organized by the Erasmus Mundus Master course
IT4BI, the Doctoral Colloquium organized by IT4BI-
DC, the Keystone Training School in Keyword
search in Big Linked Data organized by the Universi-
ty of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and the
Spring School "Models, Systems, and Algorithms for
Role-based Business Intelligence Applications" or-
ganized by Dresden University of Technology
(Germany).
The most difficult part of this journey was to keep
working after your conference paper or journal man-
uscript gets rejected more than once. Dealing with
rejection is not easy and reading the comments of
the anonymous peer reviewers may lower your self-
esteem. My strong message is if you keep revising/
redrafting and improving your paper, your manu-
script will eventually get accepted to high-quality
conferences and journals.
Can you please give general advice to students
and research assistants on their potential Com-
puter Science research/career? What`s next for
you?
My general advice to all students and research as-
sistants – do not give up. It took me several years to
find a proper program and be accepted, and yet
more hard work to finish my studies. Research is a
continuously challenging but rewarding process –
you have to work on the same idea again and again,
keep polishing every word in your paper – only the
most persistent succeeds. But the end result is
worth the effort and all the sweat.
What I like about my field is that I can work on any
topic I like, be it astronomy, medicine, education or
anything else. Data are everywhere today and I can
analyze and find interesting dependencies which
could lead to new discoveries. In my opinion, this is
really exciting!

The capability of incorporating data from different
sources into the decision making process is, nowa-
days, essential for Business Intelligence (BI) appli-
cations. Huge amounts of data available on the Web
call for more active use of these data to provide rich-
er insights. However, due to the amount and com-
plexity of data available on the Web, incorporation
and utilization of these data pose challenges for
technologies that were shaped for storing and ma-
nipulating structural data. Thus, our research pre-
sents the approach aimed at optimizing analytical
queries over Resource Description Framework
(RDF) sources. This research focuses on data inte-
gration and data processing techniques to enable
efficient execution of analytical SPARQL (RDF que-
ry language) queries in the Semantic Web.
First, we propose a framework for Exploratory
Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) over Linked
Open Data (LOD) sources. We then present a use
case that demonstrates the applicability of the pro-
posed framework. This framework sets the direction
for further investigation. In particular, we investigate
the algorithms and techniques to increase the effi-
ciency of executing analytical SPARQL queries in a
distributed environment. For example, we find that
the state-of-the-art triple store timed out during the
execution of the aggregate queries that retrieves in-
formation from a remote endpoint. To remedy this
issue, we investigate several query processing strat-
egies for this scenario such as Mediator Join, Semi-
Join, and Partial Aggregation and propose a cost
model that analyzes each query and chooses the
best strategy in each case. The comprehensive ex-
perimental evaluation shows that our approach is
efficient and scalable, able to pick the best query
processing plan in different situations, and signifi-
cantly outperforms current state-of-the art triple
stores.
Later, as a continuation of our research in federated
queries, we investigate federations of SPARQL end-
points where data are distributed in such a manner
that related data are stored on multiple endpoints
such that an endpoint contributes data for a certain
“aspect” (dimensions, hierarchies, facts, etc.) only. A
typical example is the setup where each endpoint
contains statistics data of a single country only. In
our approach, we define the mappings to link a me-
diated (global) schema to source (local) schemas,
extended RDF vocabularies to be used for mapping,
and propose a query rewriting algorithm that re-
writes a globally defined query to queries for local
endpoints. Our experimental evaluation shows the
efficiency and scalability of the proposed approach.
Finally, we investigate one of the methods to in-
crease the performance of aggregate queries on a
single SPARQL endpoint – materializing RDF views
for their further utilization during query execution.
We propose a materialized view selection and ana-
lytical SPARQL query rewriting approach for RDF
data where a view selection algorithm is based on
an RDF-specific cost model. The approach also ac-
counts for implicit triples present in the view. A com-
prehensive experimental evaluation shows the effi-
ciency and scalability of our approach resulting in 3-
10 times speedup in query execution.
To sum up, we investigate different aspects and pro-
pose algorithms and query processing optimization
techniques for improving query performance for ana-
lytical SPARQL queries in a federated setup. Our
approach helps to increase the performance gain for
analytical queries in a federation to 7x times, and
increases the performance gain for analytical que-
ries on single endpoints to 3-11x times.

Interview with Ulugbek Ergashev, a former WIUT
research assistant, about his studies at the State
University of New York at Binghamton (SUNY).
What made you apply for this programme at this
particular time? Why did you choose SUNY?
Studying as a student at Tashkent University of In-
formation Technology (TUIT) & working as a re-
search assistant at Westminster International Uni-
versity in Tashkent (WIUT), I had gained valuable
experience by completing coursework and projects
in the field of Data Mining and Data Warehouse that
involved information extraction and identification of
customers’ preference. This experience gave me
many ideas for my future study and incentive to con-
tinue research career specifically in the field of Infor-
mation Retrieval and Search Engines.
Despite of my six years of studies and research ex-
perience, I developed a huge urgency to deepen my
knowledge in the field of Computer Science (CS). I
chose the State University of New York at Bing-
hamton because I found the research interest of my
current supervisor (Prof. Weiyi Meng), an excellent
fit for his strong emphasis on web-based search
technologies and metasearch engines. Moreover, I
was really eager to attend some field oriented cours-
es offered at SUNY which I could not find in CS pro-
grams of other well-known universities.
What sort of things students at WIUT/TUIT
should do well to prepare for their professional
career and to meet the demands of a graduate
program like SUNY Binghamton? What are your
future plans/aspirations?
I would suggest students at WIUT/TUIT to start their
preparations as early as possible. Time manage-
ment plays an intrinsic role in the process of prepa-
ration for the universities abroad. Students should
have daily preparation schedule and consistently
strive towards their goals, otherwise they may give
up without trying hard. This is the moment when stu-
dents should demonstrate their persistence every
day, and I am sure their devised plan will bear fruit
sooner than expected.
After completing my Masters and PhD program, I
plan to return to Uzbekistan and apply machine
learning techniques to Big data & identify interesting
trends that can help us improve any sector of Uz-
bekistan`s economy and beyond.

WIUT staff who attended
the annual Learning and
Teaching Symposium in
May 2017 might remember
Richard Paterson’s presen-
tation on ‘Student and lec-
turer perceptions of em-
ployability skills’. The re-
search that Richard’s
presentation was based on
has now been published in
the international journal
Qualitative Research in Education. Richard is a lec-
turer at the University of Westminster in London,
and has visited WIUT many times in the past few
years to deliver training sessions to staff. As part of
his ongoing Doctoral studies he is investigating how
staff and students at WIUT engage with the employ-
ability skills agenda that is playing an increasingly
important role in higher education. Students should
now recognise that gaining a degree in itself is not
enough to ensure graduate level employment; em-
ployers the world over are looking for graduates with
additional soft skills, abilities and achievements. The
article, titled ‘Because sometimes your failures can
also teach you certain skills’, looks at why the em-
ployability skills agenda is at the fore in higher edu-
cation policy, and considers how the lack of clarity
over definitions of employability has led to misunder-
standings in employer expectations and student abil-
ities. The main findings from the research highlight
that even though staff and students may have simi-
lar understandings of the importance of employabil-
ity skills, it is not always clear how classroom activi-
ties are used to develop them. Perhaps more im-
portantly, even if students feel they have developed
useful employability skills during their studies, they
do not always feel able to describe them in a way
that will help them gain future employment. These
findings are feeding forward to the next phase of the
research, which is looking at how employability ped-
agogy is perceived and mobilised at WIUT. This re-
search will begin in 2018, and will include interviews
with staff and students, as well as analysis of class-
room activities.

Interview with Angelina Nazarova, a successful
WIUT alumnus, a former WIUT research assis-
tant, a successful graduate of the University of
Konstanz, Germany and currently a PhD candi-
date at the University of Bologna in Italy.
Angelina – please tell us what you have been do-
ing/studying/working on during the past year?
First of all, thank you for inviting me to participate in
this interview, it is an honour. I must say that I am
very proud to be part of the WIUT family. I consider
WIUT as a cornerstone of my achievements after
my graduation from BSc Economics with Finance.
If I could describe myself in one word, I would
choose "curious". It reflects my inquisitive and ex-
plorative attitude to life. When the person is passion-
ate about what he/she is doing, it helps overcome
challenges on the way. Even if there is a lack of
skills or knowledge, it is always possible to fill the
gaps with strong motivation behind. I am extremely
curious about the fields of Development Economics
and Macroeconomics including human capital for-
mation, inequality, intergenerational mobility and
economic growth.
My past year was quite intense and challenging due
to finishing my Master`s program, completing PhD
applications and some extracurriculum activities. In
addition to my studies, I worked as a Research As-
sistant at the University of Konstanz and concentrat-
ed on wealth inequality and tax evasion research
and at the same time wrote my thesis. Since I was
DAAD scholarship holder, I was also eager to ac-
tively participate in social events organized by
DAAD, including Europe Regional Conference 2017
in Berlin, where I presented one of my research
works at the session "Economics and Political Econ-
omy" and took part in "Policy and Implementation"
workshop held by the International Centre for Policy
Advocacy (ICPA).
With the support from my supervisor Prof. Georgi
Kocharkov and DAAD, I was admitted to the Sum-
mer School organized by Paris School of Economics
(PSE), which was focused on Economic Develop-
ment. It was invaluable experience for me to follow
courses from PSE experts, since I discovered areas
of potential research that I have not considered be-
fore and received very helpful feedback from Prof.
Francois Bourguignon (former Chief Economist and
Senior Vice President of the World Bank Group) re-
garding my work on inequality and intergenerational
mobility. Afterwards, I participated in the 16th Sum-
mer School in International and Development Eco-
nomics in Italy on the topic of "Family, Human Capi-
tal and Development". The program was taught by
Prof. Jean-Marie Baland (University of Namur) and
Prof. Ashraf Nava (London School of Economics
and Political Science), who are sharp-minded schol-
ars in the field of Development Economics. Due to
more informal structure of the Summer School, I had
an opportunity to discuss many topics with them. I
was inspired by Prof. Ashraf, who was excited to
know that I am coming from Uzbekistan. She gave
me priceless advice regarding my future steps in life
and career prospects. Overall, it was an unforgetta-
ble year for me, and I must admit it was full of chal-
lenges, but at the same time, very motivating, re-
warding and enlightening.
Why did you choose the University of Bologna?
I felt that for my further development as an academ-
ic, I needed to pursue a PhD in Economics. My op-
tions were limited due to funding. The University of
Bologna was among the universities my supervisor
recommended.

This PhD program is famous for its focus on Macro-
economics and Development in Italy and students
benefit a lot from close collaboration with the Euro-
pean University Institute in Florence, Bocconi Uni-
versity in Milan and the branch of John Hopkins Uni-
versity in Bologna, where we can attend some semi-
nars. I am grateful that I received full scholarship
from the University of Bologna to pursue my dream.
What contribution do you think WIUT undergrad-
uate and Research Assistantship program made
to your chosen field of research and career de-
velopment?
I'm not only honoured to be part of its alumni, but
also very grateful to WIUT faculty members for in-
spiring me with new knowledge and pushing me to
continuous self-development throughout my studies.
Moreover, the roots of my research interests are
coming from WIUT and started growing further dur-
ing my Research Assistantship under the supervi-
sion of Nurmukhammad Yusupov. He inspired me to
become a passionate economist and to be deter-
mined person. I want to take this opportunity and
express my gratitude to my mentors: Muzaffar
Ahunov, Umid Aliev, Bakhrom Mirkasimov, Ziyodullo
Parpiev, Jahongir Negmatov, Kakhramon Yusupov,
Oybek Yuldashev, Inna Wolfson, Dmitriy Kha, Obid
Khakimov, Rustam Suleymanov, Natalya Muzaffa-
rova, Farrukh Ataev, Rauf Salahodjaev, Bekzod Ali-
mov and Nurmukhammad Yusupov.
What is on your mind right now?
I hope that there will be a change in Uzbekistan's
research capabilities. I observe that the research
capacity of my generation, on average, is limited
due to insufficient training, low awareness of modern
economic tools, research methods and sometimes
lack of curiosity amongst young minds.
Another aspect I would call your attention to is rigor-
ous math/statistics skills training, which are of equal
importance for any graduate program and profes-
sional career. Nowadays, I believe, most of the so-
cial science research involves advanced computa-
tional methods. That requires good level of statistical
and mathematical skills.
Personally, I consider topics of income inequality
and low intergenerational mobility of high im-
portance worldwide. Low level of intergenerational
mobility means that income of children are much
lower than income of parents observed at the same
age. The similar situation can be noticed for educa-
tional attainment, wealth, health, and other indica-
tors of socio-economic status. Furthermore, worsen-
ing income gap produces instability, decreases labor
market productivity and deteriorates economic op-
portunities for children living in poverty. Therefore, I
believe that policymakers, including those back-
home, should be more engaged in research-based
policy recommendations.
