Dear Readers, Welcome to the third issue of our Newsletter - our second with new graphics and the first to be published in English. We conceive our Newsletter as a “work in progress”, since our final goal is to make each issue better, richer and more beautiful for you! My main aspiration is to make it a tool for establishing a direct and effective dialogue with all of you, whether you are Italian or from Hong Kong and Macao. The idea is to start a “community project” - thanks also to the synergic action between the Consulate General and the Italian Cultural Institute (which share goals, people and resources together) - passing information on the most important initiatives we organize in Hong Kong and/or Macao, as well as on those organized by other institutions which benefit the Country's image (from culture to food, wine, fashion and economy) in these two beautiful Special Administrative Regions of China. Obviously, the articles featured in our issues highlight events that have been either initiated by or communicated to us. If you have suggestions or recommendations in the future, you are always welcome to put them forward, provided your main objective is the public interest and the promotion of Italy's image and Italy's relations with Hong Kong and Macao. In this edition, as well as mentioning current cultural events in “our area”, we have created a new space which focuses on selected beautiful exhibitions taking place in Italian cities for

the benefit of those business or leisure travelers who hopefully will use our reminder not to miss them! Our Newsletter will also give the same attention to economic or trade events in Italy, like “Vinitaly”, the annual wine fair in Verona unanimously recognized as one of the most important of its kind in the world. Starting with this edition, a new column prepared in collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission and the Italian Chamber of Commerce will catch up with their business news and activities- a concrete step demonstrating the synergy among public institutions working for “Sistema Italia”. Finally, as this Newsletter has been created with and for the whole Italian community in mind, journalist Stefania Lupi - whom I thank personally for her commitment - will contribute a new regular column featuring interviews to Italian entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and Macao. This is a space aimed at reaching the many professionals whose jobs are intricately connected with Italy's image abroad, so please feel free to make your voice heard any time: we will be pleased to include you in the next editions, even though for logistic reasons (you cannot all be interviewed at the same time!) some will necessarily appear before others. “Buona lettura! 謝謝” (Enjoy the reading!) Alessandra Schiavo Consul General of Italy in Hong Kong and Macao

Founded in 2004 by Luigi Campanile, the Salento International Film Festival (SIFF) emerged as a major cultural event and one of the top Film Festivals in Southern Italy. Salento is the South-Eastern tip of the Apulia region and is sometimes described as the "heel" of the Italian "boot". The festival will represent an excellent opportunity to know more about this region and its fantastic food and tourist sights. For the first time in Hong Kong, the SIFF Hong Kong Festival will run from 16 to 20 May with a very rich programme: films, Q&A with directors and cast, a welcome cocktail, a buffet dinner, traditional music and dance and a prize lottery of a trip to Italy for two people for the full Salento Festival from 9 to 15 September. The SIFF Hong Kong will also showcase a formal ceremony where Hong Kong star Deanie Ip -winner of the Volpi Cup for best actress in the film “A Simple Life” at the 68th Venice Film Festival- and director Ann Hui will receive the Salento Award in recognition of their distinguished careers. More information and details of the programme in the next issue of the Newsletter!

It is a modern multimedia oratory, which blends the arts of the acting, singing and live music with modern technologies: high definition images which reproduce aspects of reality, illustrate the conversation between God and Noah and lead audience to a virtual world. As main characters, Noah's wife and her two sons appear alternatively in the performance, which offers a liberal and anachronistic recreation of the myth. The mix of languages – Castilian, English, French and Italian – meanwhile reminds the audience of ancient texts which suggest that Noah's sons are the progenitors of all peoples of our planet. The surprising artistic solutions of The Blue Planet go beyond the borders between cinema, theatre and new technologies of digital images. The programme was premiered in Spain in 2008 then toured in Italy.

Rome Fiumicino, Leonardo da Vinci Airport, Terminal 1 “Il Genio di Leonardo” - “The Genius of Leonardo” From 12 October 2011 to 30 April 2012 For the first time an international airport hosts an exhibition of all 21 life-size flight machines and aeronautical instruments crafted from wood, metal and cloth by artisans who have reproduced Leonardo's original sketches and drawings contained in his codices. Explanatory data sheets in 6 languages and copies of Leonardo's drawings, the codices, illustrations and legends are also on view. Rome, G.N.A.A. In Palazzo Barberini, Galleria Nazionale D'Arte Antica, Via Delle Quattro Fontane 13. “Guercino 1591 - 1666. Capolavori da Cento e da Roma” - "Guercino 1591-1666. Masterpieces from Cento and from Rome" From 16 December 2011 to 29 April 2012 Giovan Francesco Barbieri (Cento-Bologna, 1591-Roma, 1666) nicknamed Guercino, which literally means “cross-eyed”, was largely self-taught but also very much influenced by the Carracci painters, in particular by Ludovico Carracci, who strongly encouraged his creativity. Guercino came to prominence after completing the altarpiece of the “Investiture of Saint William”, an early work commissioned for the Pinoteca in Bologna when he was only 19. At the age of 20, he was invited to Rome to work for Pope Gregory XV. Guercino's ceiling fresco, “Aurora”, was painted for the Pope's nephew (Rome, Villa Ludovisi) and is considered a 17th-century masterpiece. Throughout his career, Guercino's style underwent dramatic changes. He worked mainly in Rome, Cento and Bologna. Guercino must have been an indefatigable draughtsman, for after three centuries what remains of his drawings is found in collections all over the world. His draughtsmanship with its energetic flashes of the pen, has been much copied but never equaled.

Hong Kong closer to lifting the ban on imports of Italian beef meat Good news for Italian beef meat lovers! Finding a juicy steak has never been a problem in Hong Kong, but eating a real Italian beef steak has been an impossible mission for the last eight long years. This unfortunate situation has been dragging on since 2004 when the Hong Kong Health Authorities issued a ban on beef imports from Italy following tests on the risk of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). Despite the dramatic long-standing improvements in Italy thanks to the combination of national and European measures of prevention and surveillance, The situation still needed to be solved once and for all! The Consulate General of Italy has actively promoted an all-out effort campaign to find practical solutions in close cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Ministry of Health. Thanks to this proactive approach and intense diplomatic work, the solution appears to be closer. In December 2011 the Consulate General of Italy was able to present a comprehensive report provided by the Italian Ministry of Health which has been found fully satisfactory by the Hong Kong Authorities. It is an important step towards the possible finalization of a bilateral agreement set to resume imports to Hong Kong of Italian beef meat from cattle not older than 30 months. Negotiations between the two Health Authorities are currently approaching the final stage and the Consulate General of Italy will be eager to keep readers up to date with all future developments, hoping to wish every Italian beef meat lover “buon appetito” very soon.

Italian Wine in Hong Kong. I like it! Trends and figures of a growing passion. Wine has never been so popular in Hong Kong. Following a study commissioned by Vinexpo, Hongkongers are the most enthusiastic wine drinkers in all Asia, with an average individual consumption of 5 litres per year, more than double the Japanese rate and the Singaporeans, with 2,2 litres. Not exactly the Italian and French figures with a per capita consumption of 56,2 litres and 56,6 litres per year respectively, but the Hongkongers are expressing their growing passion for wine, and the sentiment is returned. The city's thirst for the “divine nectar” doubled between 2006 and 2010 and in the last year alone the wine consumption increased by 7%, reaching 39 million bottles, according to a survey by the London-based International Wine and Spirit Research Group database. Hong Kong is a vibrant domestic market (as well as the largest wine auction centre in the world) and the most important regional door to the booming Chinese market, where consumption is expected to double by 2015. As for Italy, our culture and identity is a pillar of the national economy. According to the latest data provided by Italian statistics Institute, in 2011 exports of Italian wine reached an astonishing 4,4 billions Euro (more than 440 billions HKD) with 24 million hectoliters, increasing 12% in terms of value and 9% in terms of production. This result was achieved despite the economic crisis, the strong Euro currency and a growing international competition. Mr. Giovanni Mantovani, CEO & Director General of VeronaFiere said that in the last years even the smallest Italian producers have sharpened their ability by asserting
robby152
Text Box
themselves in the international arena. “Together with the big names - Mr. Mantovani said - “ it is easier and easier to find small producers who are appreciated in restaurants and wine bars all over the world for their excellent products and are able to capture niche markets. This is a positive trend showing a general propensity on export”. Italian wines in Hong Kong are increasing their presence year after year and are more and more appreciated by Hong Kong wine lovers, who can indulge their senses with the perfect combination of Italian fine wine and quality food. Last year, Italy was nominated Partner Country at the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair, the most important wine Fair in Asia, with 210 exhibitors, 108 of which were sponsored by Vinitaly (part of VeronaFiere's portfolio), the Italian world's top exhibition in the wine sector. The 2011 edition of Vinitaly (www.vinitaly.com) attracted over 156.000 visitors, 48.000 of which coming from 110 different Countries, with an impressive attendance from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Russia. The 2012 edition of Vinitaly, scheduled in Verona from 25th to 28th March 2012 will host more than 4,200 exhibitors from all over the world. The Fair will display the best of the best of Italian and International wines and will be full of mouthwatering events and innovations. A specific area of the exhibition will welcome more than 100 companies making wine in accordance with the rules of biodynamic agriculture. So, why not celebrating this good news with an alluring glass of Prosecco? Alla salute! (Cheers!)

Brunello di Montalcino doesn't need any translation for the many wine enthusiasts in Hong Kong. This appellation instantly evokes intense fragrances, unique sensorial experiences and - above all - represents one of the world's most acclaimed wines. Last 9th March Brunello di Montacino was the guest of honour at an exclusive soirée held at the top-notch Chinese restaurant Island Tang. The event named “Eccellenze Montalcino” combined a wine tasting with a Chinese dinner and was hosted by the wine editor of Asia Tatler Mr. James Suckling, internationally regarded as one of the world's most influential wine critics. On behalf of the Hong Kong Tatler & James Suckling Wine Club, Mr. Suckling made a presentation on excellent quality Brunello vintages, in particular from 2006 and 2007. The event was the perfect occasion for showing how intriguing and inspiring the pairing of Italian wines and Chinese food can be.

Say Ferrero and your mind conjures up gluttonous visions of chocolate treats, snacks and confectionery products. Ferrero Group, one of the best known confectioners in the world, has raised generations of Italians on its chocolaty delights. Even here in the Far East, ten thousand miles away from the Piedmont town of Alba where it all started in the '40s, the name is synonymous with "lovemark". “So much so that in December the Ferrero Group in Hong Kong is going to celebrate its 35 years in the city with its own legal entity”, says Mr Luca Cico, General Manager - North Asia Ferrero Asia Ltd .

From a small "outpost" in Asia, Hong Kong has become the world's largest market for individual consumption of Rocher and it has developed such strong appreciation over the years for these chocolates that they have even

"They have all gained large and recognized trust, which for us means higher market shares”. But Ferrero's growth does not stop here. “After introducing a broad portfolio of our products to the Hong Kong market, we have started developing also in other Asian countries - in both North and South East Asia - and, as a consequence,

A NEW AGREEMENT OF INTEGRATION BETWEEN RESIDENT FOREIGNERS AND ITALIAN AUTHORITIES COMES INTO FORCE Following the practice adopted by various European States, all non-EU foreigners who become resident in Italy will be summoned by the Italian Authorities to sign an “Agreement” which would facilitate their integration into Italian society. In the Agreement, which is drafted in 19 languages to be as widely comprehensible as possible, the Italian Government pledges to assist the new residents in their process of integration by providing language learning tools, elementary knowledge of the Italian Constitution and by guaranteeing basic education for minors. For their part, foreigners need to commit to abiding by the rules of the civil society as well as to taking an active part in the process of their own integration. Fulfillment of the provisions contained in the Agreement will represent the basic condition for future extensions of the immigrants' residence permits by the Italian Authorities.
