Now that the marathon of the High Holy Days is behind us, my mind naturally turns to the next major holiday. My kids would like to think it’s Hanukkah, but I’m thinking more about the next major American holiday, Thanksgiving. During normal years, we would travel across the country to visit my extended family, probably eating a bit too much turkey, and of course zoning out during the long intense conversations about football.

Yet this isn’t a normal year. This year, that will not be our experience. Many of us will not be able to safely travel to be with our loved ones, and many others will not be able to welcome our loved ones into our homes. And even more difficult will be the pain we feel for those we have lost, whom we miss so intensely during holidays.

With the hardship that Thanksgiving can bring, I’m reminded that gratitude, or hakarat hatov, noticing the good in our daily experience, is more important than ever.

Gratitude can lift depression, help us sleep, improve our diet, and make us more likely to exercise, and on an even deeper level it connects us. Gratitude, according to Scientific America, is the best predictor of well-being and good relationships, overtaking hope, love and creativity to name a few. Gratitude helps us to remember the good, the miraculous, the sacred that exists in the world.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel takes this notion a step further and argues that we need to live our lives as if everything is a miracle. He writes, “Humankind will not perish for want of information; but only for want of appreciation. The beginning of our happiness lies in the understanding that life without wonder is not worth living. What we lack is not a will to believe but a will to wonder.” ― (Abraham Joshua Heschel, God in Search of Man: A Philosophy of Judaism)

What do you wonder about? What small moments of innate beauty exist in your life? What have you seen today, that is a miracle?

One moment that I take to heart as sacred and meaningful is our yearly interfaith Thanksgiving. This year it will take place on November 15th. And while it will be online, because of the Pandemic, perhaps it will remind us that we are not alone in trying to navigate these difficult times. And perhaps the theme of healing will help us to bring comfort and hope to one another.

I am grateful for our partnerships with our interfaith congregations and I hope that we will work to deepen our connections throughout the year.

May we all look and discover a moment of thanks, and may it sustain us through difficult times.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Time is marching on. It is November already and fall has arrived. The leaves are just beginning to change color. The air is cool and brisk. We have to get out and enjoy each and every day to the fullest before either the cold weather, Covid, or both keeps us all indoors once again.

So many people are sad and depressed over the fact that we still cannot get together in person. We are all asked to follow certain protocols for our safety and the safety of others. We understand that we need to follow these restrictions, but it still doesn't make it any easier to be so isolated from one another.

For my family, and I am sure for yours as well, Thanksgiving has always been a holiday for family gatherings and large dinners, but that will not be the case this year. Two of our daugh-ters live out of state with their families and will not be coming home for the Thanksgiving

holiday. Of course, we want everyone to be safe and to stay healthy. However, it is still depressing not to be able to be together.

We could all use some extra strength, a feeling of togetherness, and a time of healing, this year maybe more so than ever. Healing, not only from the physical, psychological, spiritual, social, and financial effects from Covid...but also from Zoom fatigue and perhaps healing from the turmoil in our country. We are all exhausted.

Please join us on Zoom on Sunday, November 15th at 7:00 p.m. for our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. Let us join together once again with our brothers and sisters of St. John's Nepomucene and the Selden Mosque to pray for healing, for camaraderie, for peace, and to offer our prayers of gratitude. This Interfaith Thanksgiving Service always restores my faith in humankind. It is so uplifting, and, in my opinion, we could all use a spiritual boost.

Also, my fellow congregants, if you have not already done so, please exercise your right to vote on Tuesday, November 3rd. Stay well and be safe.

From my family to yours, a happy Thanksgiving holiday. May your days be filled with love, blessings, and gratitude.

Shalom, Paul

Sisterhood Newsletter Shalom everyone. I hope that everyone had a meaningful High Holiday experience and an easy fast. Even though we experienced services on Zoom, and it was unique and different, I am hoping that you and your families enjoyed the services. I particularly liked the interactive Torah studies and the discussions on Yom Kippur afternoon.

It is so wonderful seeing so many new members and old members participating in Sisterhood activities. Sisterhood welcomes everyone to our virtual meetings. I hope everyone got a chance to get reacquainted at the Sweet and Greet, and you enjoyed making coffee cake with Thea. I also want to thank those of you who generously donated money to our Making Strides for Breast Cancer campaign. We even had a real-life outdoor schmooze in our temple parking lot, and we had tons of people come just to be together. Please check the bulletin, Facebook, and weekly online Temple news flashes to keep up with Sisterhood activities.

One new thing we will be trying is an online gift shop. Right now, we have some lovely jewelry and tallises and mezuzahs for sale. I will be posting pictures and descriptions of the items online. You can use your credit card to make a purchase. We are starting out small since I am not too familiar with online sales. If anyone has experience setting up in a more efficient way, please let me know. Sisterhood can use your expertise. You can reach me at [email protected].

Remember to get out and vote.

I want to wish everyone a good Thanksgiving and happy and safe fall season.

Stephanie Sisterhood President
