In the Tanaya, the great philosophical work of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the Rabbi expresses the most radical of truths as expressed by the Torah: the inexistence of the universe. After all, what do the Torah verses say: “You were shown to know that the Lord is God, there is none else” (Dt. 4:35) and “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One (Dt.) if not that nothing exists but the One being of God. This means that nothing exists and nothing happens outside the being of God; not one thought, action, feeling. All existence from the farthest reaches of space to the most
minute elements in the atom are all a part of the Divine. Where then does this leave us? It imparts upon us the spiritual obligation never to stop opening ourselves to this Divine Being of whom we are a part. It requires each and every one of us to develop a spiritual and moral path that will take us to the God who is present. The onus to uncover divinity is upon you and me to unearth this truth, comprehend it, and incorporate it into our hearts and lives. When this is achieved, then all will be at Oneness with the One. Thinking ahead to Rosh HaShanah 5777 and the impact this, my 45th High Holy Day with B’nai Israel, will have upon me, has called me to reflect upon my rabbinate and my life. I have devoted my entire life to this search to uncover the Divine within and to attempt to express this and teach this through my personal and professional life. This reflection has brought me to request from the congregation that it take on an Assistant Rabbi to enable me to begin devoting myself more intensely to this path than I could previously with the schedule I have been keeping. I look forward to continuing as your Rabbi for many years and God-willing decades to come. Judy and I also look forward to this year, which as each year before it, will be a blessed one with all of you. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Our Friday night worship is conducted in English and Hebrew. Services are every Friday evening. Our Shabbat Services are the 1
st, 3
rd, and 4
th Fridays at 8:00 pm. We
have a Family Service geared toward school age children the 2
nd Friday of each
month at 7:15 pm. The Rabbi will offer Birthday and Anniversary Blessings for the month at this service. We also have a Tot Shabbat Service geared toward pre-school children the 3
rd Friday of each
month at 7:00 pm. In a month where there is a 5th Friday we have a Musical Shabbat Service at 7:30 pm. Our Saturday Services are held when there is a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. These are open to the community. Please join us.

Summer has arrived and with it comes vacation
plans and a relaxing, enjoyable time. There are lots
of things to look forward to doing. But you also
need to remember your $ a Week Club. You can
include your contributions with your dues (clearly
marked $ a Week), pay it separately throughout the
summer, or plan to “catch up” in the fall.
Remember: In order to earn your certificate at
Simchat Torah in the fall, you have to be paid in full.
Congratulations to all who have started or finished
their club dues this year.

Jewish Boot Camp IV will be held this year on Saturday morning, August 28th at the Temple. Jewish Boot Camp is an enjoyable and inspirational way to gear up for the new year 5777. This year’s theme will be: Kabbalah: The Education of our Soul. As the holy days approach, many of us are seeking the keys that will open us to the Divine. As Rabbi Hillel Zeitlin wrote, “It is because God’s light shines in us that we have a longing and desire for transcendent mystery.” Boot Camp IV will have three presentations that hopefully will invigorate your soul for the coming year. Rabbi Moss will teach a unit on the teachings of Rabbi Hillel Zeitlin (1871-1942) who was a true Tzaddik as he walked on the Nazi death march wearing his tallit and holding a copy of the Zohar in his hand. Two other units will have teachers from the Breslov and Chabad communities. There is no fee for this program. Tell your friends. The time of the program will be in the August bulletin.

With four Ducks games under our belt, manning the concession stand at Ducks' Stadium has netted B'nai Israel over $2,000 so far this season. More than two dozen volunteers have worked at least one game and several have worked them all to date. No prior experience is required. Training is minimal and happens on the job.
More volunteers spread the work load and we are looking for additional help for our July games on Sunday evening, the 17th, reporting at approximately 3:30 and Saturday evening the 30th reporting at 5:00 PM. The Saturday game is billed as a
"fireworks extravaganza" and concession workers are welcome to stay for the show following the game.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. For additional information and to volunteer for either or both of these games please go to [email protected].

As the July bulletin was getting ready to go to press, including a reminder about our August 2nd blood drive, we were notified by the Long Island Blood Center that they have declared a summer blood emergency situation. They asked if B'nai Israel could help in a major way and offered a "sweetener" as part of the deal. Could we raise the target objective on August 2nd from 35 to 55 pints of blood if they provided additional staff and two Mets tickets to a game of the donor’s choice TO EVERY DONOR?
The single largest donor group supporting the Blood Center is our high schools. While that speaks well of our community's teenagers, the down side is the absence of this key demographic during the summer months. Vacation plans further reduce the pool of potential donors. Therefore we schedule a drive in early August each year to help fill that void. Recent difficulties at Dowling College and a second large sponsor in the Oakdale area caused several other blood drives to be canceled just as blood reserves on Long Island were beginning the usual summer dip.
While we have never before collected 55 pints of blood in a single drive, we came close following the Hurricane Sandy emergency, and with the added incentive of Mets tickets, agreed to the plan. Achieving that goal will require the entire B'nai Israel community to step up. It is a mitzvah that each pint of blood provides life-saving treatment for up to three patients in their time of need. But then each donor will receive two tickets to a Mets game they select during the remainder of August and September. See the flyer on our website, Facebook page, and Temple lobby to see how you can participate. Please keep in mind that teenagers not able to donate at school over the summer can participate along with adult members of the family.
Because we anticipate a larger turnout than we've had in the past, including members of the Oakdale community and Dowling College, making an appointment at a time convenient to you is more important than ever. Please call the Temple Office, 631-563-1660, or go on line, and make a note on your calendar to help us on August 2nd.

Emergency Blood Drive August 2nd

I recently attended the 2016 Confirmation class service held here at the temple. It was a beautiful service, complemented by the presence of the choir and a large turnout by the congregation and the families of the students being confirmed. The students each explained why it was important for them to have completed this part of their Jewish education. The overriding theme of the speeches revolved around family. This is something that I found particularly endearing. The definition of family cannot simply be defined by the blood relatives we have. It extends to all of those people who are invested in our lives, those who care about us and who help us to develop into the people we become. It appeared to me that each of the students had a strong sense of family and value the connections they have made here at B’nai Israel.
After witnessing the aftermath of the horrors that occurred in Orlando, it is more important than ever to be there for people- all people, regardless of race, creed¸ color or sexual orientation.
When we bleed, we all bleed the same color of blood. We are all living our lives, trying to do the best for ourselves and those around us. We must continue to be a family for each other, supporting each other and striving to make the world a better place. I congratulate the students of the Confirmation class of 2016. It is my expressed hope that they continue to do what they can to make the world a better place for their families, related or not.

We will be offering four evening Hebrew classes in July and August. The dates are July 5, July 12, August 9 and
August 23 from 7:30-9:00 pm. All Religious School students are encouraged to attend these sessions to maintain
their Hebrew competency during the summer months. Please call the Temple Office to register.
The Religious School book sale will be held on September 6th from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Bingo volunteers are needed more than ever. Help is not needed every week. When fill-in volunteers are needed, due to illness, vacation, family commitments, etc. your help and support will be greatly appreciated. There is absolutely no pressure to volunteer if you are not available when contacted. There are mainly two time slots when volunteers work: -From 6:00-7:15 p.m. -From 6:00-9:00 or 9:30 p.m. We are located just south of Veteran's Memorial Highway on Locust Avenue. The address is: 1644 Locust Avenue, Bohemia You will be trained when you arrive and work as a team with other volunteers. The revenues from bingo help the Temple to run in so many ways. Please volunteer now by placing a phone call to me at 631-584-5931. If I am not home, leave a message, including your name and telephone number and I will contact you to discuss more specifically what volunteers do every Wednesday night. I have been volunteering at bingo for nine years and my husband for roughly twenty years. Try us out; I guarantee you will like it. It was a pleasure to see the terrific turnout at our June lunch meeting at the Hidden Oak Cafe. We didn't have any control over the weather, but we did need the rain.
For our July 13th 12:30 brown bag lunch and meeting, we will be enjoying a presentation by Canine Companions for Independence. I am sure we will all learn more information on what our canine friends are capable of adding to the lives of the people they serve.
In August, I think we will do our annual tea party, with members providing finger sandwiches, scones, and other light refreshments, as well as a variety of teas to share, of course with spirited conversations.
As always, I look forward to our next meeting.

Sisterhood Newsletter
I am honored, excited and proud to be the incoming Sisterhood President. My name is Karen Sweeting and I have been an active member of Sisterhood for many years. I have held positions as the head of children’s programing and also co-chair with the amazing Joyce Amato on the programing committee.
Summer is upon us and we will be having a planning committee meeting on July19th, 6:45 pm at the Temple. This is to have a discussion and go over ideas for programing for the upcoming year. If you have any ideas for programs or are interested in coming to a meeting please feel free to contact me by emailing [email protected] or Joyce Amato or Yaffe Lecce.
I would like to also take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to our past President Shari Kaufman for the amazing job she has done for the past several years and her continued work and support with Sisterhood. I would like to also thank the entire Sisterhood board who has been supportive and confident in their decision to nominate me as the new Sisterhood President.

Religious School Graduation Service
Children going away to college are embarking on a new chapter in their lives. We, at B’nai Israel Reform Temple,
would like to stay in touch with your children while they are away at college. Please allow us to be an important
connection to home. By signing up, on Chanukah, Passover, and Purim, each student will receive a fun and thought-
ful package to enjoy from “home”.
We had over a dozen participants last year. They enjoyed dreidels and candy for Chanukkah, Hamentashen, candy,
and juice for Purim, and a bag of treats for Passover. The feedback from this project was very favorable. It brings
some of the traditions from home to the college dorm.
